Madam, your aesthetics are gorgeous - just everything. Love the list, It Follows is really the only one that I would've added to the metaphorical section, though I'm sure there are several you wanted to add. This October is a marathon for me, watching one classic/foreign horror film and one mainstream horror film daily. Keep up the good work!
You are one of the few RUclipsrs I’m subscribed to that I make sure to watch every single upload. Consistently great content even when it’s a subject that at first glance I wouldn’t think I’d be interested in
I am a massive horror buff and love this. I introduced my friends to my all time favorite horror film The Thing and since I did they fell in love with the horror genre and it became their favorite as well.
This is an exceptionally good video Mariana. Really like the thought and effort you put into the categories. The only thing I don't understand is why you don't have over a million subs because you certainly deserve it.
Aww thank you so much! I would probably panic if I had anything over 100k subscribers ever, especially 1m. Don't think that would happen though, so nothing to worry about ))
Love this list so much Marianna, big fan of Ready or Not and Train to Busan but gotta add the rest to my watch list. Also obsessed with your skeleton shirt! Where's it from?
Marianna I had an interesting experience a few years back teaching film and media history to some rather sheltered home school students who had literally seen relatively few movies and no horror films at all. I approached it in an unusual way. Historically. One night I decided to give them a double feature of both Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. It was stunning the effect these films had on them. While not quite in the zone of a 1930's audience, they were as close as I was probably ever going to get. They were genuinely frightened. And one teen girl was so disturbed by the implications of the Bride of Frankenstein that she was in tears. That to me was fascinating on many levels. (It says a lot about the level of imagery that people take as normal today.) I can only imagine what would have happened if I started them with anything on your list. When I finally did get to R-Rated films a year later, they had genuinely shocked reactions. But they were able to understand why by then. And they also were able to appreciate silent, black and white and foreign films without the usual complaints.
My wife and I are SUCH BIG fans of ‘Scream’-one of the greatest. Worth looking up is a discussion on it by a podcast called Switchblade Sisters and a video by Matt Draper and La’Ron Readus on RUclips. And yes, RIP Wes Craven. One of the masters.
Love that you mentioned A Tale of Two Sisters 👯♀️ Such a great film! I would also recommend REC, a Spanish found-footage Horror film. It’s an absolute thrill ride from start to finish and great for watching with friends 🔥
Great video! Your small synopsis of each film is on point. Definitely going to check out A Tale of Two Sisters and Misery. Can't wait for those! I was also wondering what editing program you use? It reminds me of stepping inside a bookstore for some reason! It makes the aesthetic of your videos much more welcoming.
@@ImpressionBlend Okay noted. Thanks! The majority of my friends use that as well, and I'm here still using iMovie like a noob! Also, in your category of "fun-horror", I would also put Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series. It effortlessly blends tension, suspense, and comedy. Definitely one of my favorite horror trilogies made by a fantastic director.
My favorites are : - Sleepy Hollow - Terminator 1 - Mama - Crimson Peak - The woman in black - Dracula (with Keanu Reeves and Gary Oldman) - Halloween (the first) - Gremlins 1-2 - The fly - Sin City - Interview with a vampire - 30 days of night - Carrie (both) - Dawn of the dead (2004) - Wrong turn 1-2 - The hills have eyes
I'm already into horror, but the movies that truly got me from being just okay with the genre into a real fan were the classics. Here are the top 10 that turned me into a genre nerd: Dracula (1931) Bride of Frankenstein (1935) The Uninvited (1944) Psycho (1960) The Innocents (1961) The Haunting (1963) Rosemary's Baby (1968) Don't Look Now (1973) Suspiria (1977) The Shining (1980) Obviously I tend to prefer older movies, it takes a truly special modern horror movie to make me a fan of it. I really liked "Color Out of Space" this year, but the last horror movie that I would put up against the classics would be "The VVitch".
I'm the opposite, actually. Aside from "Alien" and "Aliens" what really got me excited about horror were all of the early 2000s horror films I saw in theatres. Once I was hooked I started making my way through classics, which I'm honestly still in the process of - there are so many!
I think the movies that got me hooked on horror were probably the first three truly "adult" movies I ever really saw; all three in the theater: "Alien" (1979) "The Changeling" (1980) "The Shining" (1980) OMG, did this those movies scare the living hell out of me. Looking back, I'm not even sure now whether or not I should have been sitting in a theater, watching those at that age (about 10/11). Heh. :) I saw "Alien" at 10, with my dad. And at that age, at that time (before computers and home video and cable, really), I had just never seen anything like that. The environment, the characters, the whole thing. I mean, probably the "biggest" movie I had seen up to that time was "Superman."
@@ImpressionBlend Probably the formative difference is that I was already a major fan of classic movies and classic literature before I became a fan of classic horror. So they are the type of movies and books that I'm much more attracted to in general.
I'd have added Shaun of the Dead, the ritual, Apostle, Raw, Thelma, Conjuring and Lake Mungo, but you are right, there are MANY superlative horrors out there, with very specific subgenres to cater to every taste.
Such a great video! I am somewhat in the middle about Horror. It is not one of my favourite genres, but I don't have prejudices or totally against it either. So, it is not surprising that I have seen about half of movies mentioned. I certainly have picked few tips and you convinced me to watch some I was on the fence about.
THIS IS AWESOME!!! What a fabulous guide (not to mention idea for a video). Only two films you named that we haven’t yet seen: ‘Unsane’ and ‘A Tale of Two Sisters’, which we’ll add to the list. Truly, we echo every single comment that you make throughout about each film and sub-genre (and we think your observation on winter horror and how it relates to its characters’ inner darknesses is fascinating-totally true!). My better half also wants your shirt (which is awesome), and while it’s VERY hard to pick among your videos, this *might* be our favorite of 2020 so far (tho we also loved your videos on ‘Palm Springs’ and ‘Dark’). Everything about this one is so great. We also just decorated our house for Halloween, so this arrived at a perfect time 🎃😈👻😱🕸 Looking forward to more Halloween and horror videos!!! )) EDIT: another favorite of yours of 2020 is of course part 1 of films that changed your life-inspired us to make our own lists ❤️❤️
Hi Marianna It's much more of a thriller, but the last film that caused me to jump out of my seat in a movie theater was the refrigerator scene in Wait Until Dark. Also, thank you for revisiting Let The Right One In. It's both Art House & Horror. It's beautiful in so many ways. Keep safe & keep happy.
I can't think of a better film to start someone off with than Black Swan. I recall seeing it in the theater and thinking after, "There's your Best Picture right there." Natalie Portman is mesmerising in it. Such well-crafted horror.
Great video and list of films, Marianna. Really enjoyed that. And I really loved the mixture of fun and just entertaining films such as "Scream" and "Ready or Not" with stuff like "Black Swan" and "Unsane" -- two very disturbing, unsettling films. As a matter of fact, "Scream" is not only one of my favorite horror films, but simply one of my favorite films ever, of any sort. The number of careers, memes, classic lines of dialogue, and that first sequence alone make it in absolute, instant classic IMO. :) I had never seen anything like that and was just completely gripped from the very beginning. Wes Craven was such a genius. I definitely need to see "A Tale of Two Sisters" -- and thanks for reminding me of that. It looks like something that should totally be in my wheelhouse.
This was an amazing video! Since you mentioned you hate jump scares, I'm curious to know how you feel about anything James Wan has done. Particularly Insidious, one of my favorite horror movies to rewatch.
OK, so don't hate me, but after all of the praise I've heard I was actually pretty let down by "Insidious". I think I would have been more impressed if I saw it back in the day? I do love "The Conjuring" and "The Conjuring 2" though, despite wishing they had less jump scares ))
Great choices! For people who dislike horror because they hate gore, these are some classic psychological horror films I would suggest: The Haunting (1963) The Innocents (1961) The Uninvited (1944) The Night of the Hunter (1955) Psycho (1960) Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
"...YET"😌 Love what you did there😄 Something about watching John Carpenter's Halloween makes October season more genuine. With a jack o' lantern & pop secret. I first saw it at only age 6. Because my parent's were irresponsible haha! Point being, it's a simple story, but cult classic and made me a ultimate horror fanatic. Happy Halloween! 🎃
As a Horror fan the reason why I love Horror is because nothing is left off the table, you can turn anything you want into a Horror film. I think Horror is the only genre of cinema that is free and uncensored of creative thought and expression, though some people have tried to put chains and censor Horror *cough Mary Whitehouse cough*. So that’s why I love Horror because it’s free and uncensored of creative thought and expression. As for films that got me into Horror, Scream got me into it and Scream is my all time favourite movie. But other films that I love and got me into Horror are The Shinning, 28 Days Later, Event Horizon, Black Christmas (original 74), Wolf Creek, Candyman, Cube, Suspiria (original 77), and Jacob’s Ladder (original 90). As well as my guilty pleasure Horror’s like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Halloween H20, Urban Legend, Valentine, Freddy Vs Jason, and Final Destination.
I’ve always enjoy and love horror movies ever since I was kid. Ironically, I was born in October. The movies that got me into horror are the Universal Monsters franchise and Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.
I watched it yesterday and it was good. It kind of lost me when it revealed the monster hunting them down. I feel like it should have left it to the imagination.
I think I would add It follows and happy death day to your list. This video was really great Marianna and how you categorized them is a really cool idea!
This was a brilliant format to share some horror recommendations. Watched “The Shining” this weekend and now you’ve inspired me to give “Black Swan” a rewatch tonight.
I needed this video, thanks Mariana. Can’t get into horror, maybe this will help. Horror just isn’t unpredictable enough to make me feel not in control. If you can see a scare or twist coming it is not effective.
The best time of year besides Christmas... I think they're kind of tied really! Black Swan is INCREDIBLE. I LOVED the movie so so much. Definitely need a cosy scary movie night!
This is a great list for someone who may be skeptical about the genre. Also I would add that if they like Misery they should check out season 2 of Castle Rocky as well . Its centered around Annie Wilkes, and Lizzy Caplan gave such a great performance that even Kathy Bates tweeted how impressed she was with her portrayal ! Another thing I would recommend for fans of Samara Weaving In Ready or not , is the movie Mayhem. It has that same fun and bloody feel .
Impression Blend I enjoyed season 2 much more than the first season. It also made me a Elsie Fisher fan , and checkout 8th grade afterwards lol. I can understand not being able to keep up with so many shows and having them on backlog. It’s definitely a great time for television!
My favorite horror movies: Bram Stoker's Dracula, Crimson Peak, Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, the Scream saga, Happy Death Day, Penny Dreadful tv series, Shallow Grave, Shutter Island, The Others
Scream is more satisfactory after you’ve seen enough films to recognize the tropes. It’s one of my favs but I don’t think it’s for beginners! 👍🏾 video as always
Thank you! It definitely gets better and better as you watch more horror, but I think a lot of the tropes it highlights are very widely known at this point. So even someone who isn't that familiar with horror will pick up on a lot of the jokes.
I'm planning to see Train to Busan, Relic, Possession, The Wailing, Re-animator and a few others this month. Great picks, some of my favourites are there.
You will never hear me say that horror is not scary, so I’m staying away from The Babadook and Midsommar. 😁 Still recovering from Hereditary, even though I saw it more than a year ago. 🤯 For a person who actively avoids horror I‘ve loved quite a few of these: Pan’s Labyrinth, Black Swan, Tale of Two Sisters, The Shining, Let The Right One In, and Train to Busan. 🥰 I also watched Silence of the Lambs a while back, but somehow didn’t like it. 🤭 Hadn’t heard of Unsane before: added to my list! Get Out was already on there. Thank you for this video! 🤗
Hahahaha I love horror movies and this was a great video!! I would also add Blair Witch Project because it's not too scary but still is a great horror film
It's true, it's pretty mild on the scares. Though I don't know, without that late 90s nostalgia, would it still hold up as an introduction to the genre?
My Top 10 Horror movies are 1. Carrie (1979) 2. American Psycho 3. An American Werewolf in London 4. Evil Dead II 5. The Shining 6. Let the Right One In 7. Shaun of the Dead 8. A Tale of Two Sisters 9. Suspiria (1977) 10. Alien (1979)
I will go with the following to ease people into horror. Zombieland. Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Jaws. Hush. Haunting of Hill House. Love this video of yours
Totally considered putting "Zombieland" and "Tucker and Dale" on this list! I think horror comedies are a great gateway, even though they become funnier as you learn more about the genre.
Great list 👌👌👌, amazing movies 🎥 🎬, " let the right one in" is just brilliant, the babadook 👍, hereditary and midsommar were perfectly made, a new style of horror.
I'm a scaredy cat, but Silence of the Lambs, Pan's Labirynth and Misery are some of my all time favorite movies. I usually watch slashers cause they don't tend to scare me in the long term. I get a fun time being tense and then it's over haha. Scream is da best for me. Wating to see what happens with Sidney in Scream 5. No high hopes, but I do want to watch it haha. Also, You're Next is great.
I’ve always preferred Misery over The Shining. Just overall better direction, dialogue, and acting in my opinion. Definitely a great film for people who don’t watch a lot of horror
From Texas I thought there was a lot of overacting, especially from Duvall and Crothers. And the pacing and cinematography to me felt overly calculated. I think Kubrick went overboard on trying to make the film have a hypnotic quality, I found it really tedious. But I can definitely see why people love those aspects
Does Mother! Count as horror? I loved that, even more so than black swan. But if you are on the fence about Zombie movies watch the dawn of the dead remake written by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy).. it's excellent. also The Mist is a must see, it uses some of the classic hallmarks of the zombie genre (people stuck together in a claustrophobic place) but is not a zombie movie..
You know, I go back and forth on whether "mother!" is horror or not. I think I may need to rewatch it to come to a conclusion, but regardless it's a great film - loved it as well.
Love your top !! Great list nice that your broke it into categories that makes it easier to pick out something. Train to Busan was really gross, not sure that would be a good movie for a horror newbie but it was an excellent movie. Thanks I actually found a couple I had never seen
I would classify the original Alien as a must see horror movie. Also, if you like just eerie and spooky without gore The Mothman Prophecies (Richard Gere 2002) was great!
I don't know if you've seen it, but [•REC] (2007) is a spanish movie, found-footage about zombies. It's really good and one of the few cases where this kind of horror actually works.
What about the list where you talk about the movies that changed your life? You were going to make part 2. I followed your part 1 and I loved every movie on that list.
'Bad writing' ... not problem that we find only in horror movies, but one that is more and more common in the good number of movies; think about the horrible Mary Sue characters that we see too often in movies (ex. Rey in Star Wars, Captain Marvel in the MCU, etc).
Just now watching this video as a recent viewer of your channel, and overall, this is a really good list, although there a few films that I am embarrassed I still haven't seen (such as 'The Babadook'), I wanted to recommend my favorite "haunted house" genre double-feature (and, dear Lord, 'The Shining' is not one of the films because it's the most over-rated horror film of all time, and that's coming from a big Kubrick fan). 'The Haunting' directed by Robert Wise in 1961 was the very first adaptation of Shirley Jackson's 'The Haunting of Hill House' and still one of the scariest films I've ever seen. I put off watching the Netflix series for a long time worried they would do damage to it, much like the '90's film remake (which wasted the absolute perfect cast for that film), but ended up loving the series, and there are some great nods to the original film in it. The second of my films is 'The Changeling' starring George C. Scott from the early 80's. A fairly unknown horror film but so good with one of the absolute best seance sequences of all time. 'The Others' would make a great 3fer along with these two.
Hmm... Maybe I can do something about must-watch classic horror? Or just my classic horror favorites? I'll have to add that to my list of spooky season ideas
Great job! As a nonhorror fan this was very interesting. I like Get Out and The Babadook because the characters are so good. I just don't like when the movies get too rapey or murdery
Horror is so fun. Got to love the classics. As creepy as they are. My favorite is Halloween. But enjoy the cult classics like evil dead. Psycho gets me and the excorists. One of the weirdest and darker ones I seen as a child was mothers day. It's the realistic ones that seem to get me the most. Chainsaw massacre of course. Alot of horror movies had alot of comedy in them as well like friday the 13th and nightmare on elm street and evil dead series. But some movies were just 100 percent horror and evil. There are so many hidden gem horror movies.
Great video! Just sometime I'd like to add: I wouldn't really recommend Scream to people who have no experience with horror movies tbh. It's a decent slasher, but really works best when it's deconstructing slasher tropes ... which you actually have to know about in order to appreciate.
Such a good video idea! I love how you broke it up into categories too - so many good recommendations!!
Thank you so much, Steph!! Can't wait to see your spooky videos this month!!

@@ImpressionBlend Success, definitely! ♥️
Great choices! For people who dislike horror because they hate gore, these are some classic psychological horror films I would suggest:
The Haunting (1963)
The Innocents (1961)
The Uninvited (1944)
The Night of the Hunter (1955)
Psycho (1960)
Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
I love this! There are a couple on this list I haven't watched but I can say for sure you got me into the genre, sooo trust the list, people :D
Only a couple! I'm so proud of my work hehe
Enjoy your reviews, keep up the great work!😀❤️
"...YET"😌
Love what you did there😄
Something about watching John Carpenter's Halloween makes October season more genuine.
Excellent video, thank you for the recommendations Mariana! 👻
Thanks for watching!
I’ve always enjoy and love horror movies ever since I was kid. Ironically, I was born in October. The movies that got me into horror are the Universal Monsters franchise and Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.
Oh my gosh! This video is coming RIGHT ON TIME for me, thanks for reading my mind lol
Yay I'm happy you found it useful ))
Great horror recommendations! Someones I'd add onto that is The Descent, Lake Mungo, and #Alive!
My #1 recommendation would be The Others with Nicole Kidman. Don't look it up, just watch it :) It has my favourite plot twist of all time
Silence of The Lambs is one of my all time favorite films ever and it always gets under my skin.
Absolutely! Such a creepy masterpiece!
Tis the season to be jolly! 😁 Love the top.
Has anyone seen the ritual? That one was good.
I watched it yesterday and it was good. It kind of lost me when it revealed the monster hunting them down. I feel like it should have left it to the imagination.
@@armando7060 I find the design of the creature really cool and scary, actually. 😅
@@blackphilip8369 it looked reall cheesy to me. Lol
I think I would add It follows and happy death day to your list. This video was really great Marianna and how you categorized them is a really cool idea!
Thank you!
This was a brilliant format to share some horror recommendations. Watched “The Shining” this weekend and now you’ve inspired me to give “Black Swan” a rewatch tonight.
Thank you so much! "Black Swan" is brilliant, and even better on repeat viewings :D
Tucker and Dale Vs Evil is my fav Horror comedy! I always recommend this movie for people who don’t think they like horror but enjoy comedy.
I needed this video, thanks Mariana. Can’t get into horror, maybe this will help. Horror just isn’t unpredictable enough to make me feel not in control. If you can see a scare or twist coming it is not effective.
You are such a good RUclips. Why on Earth don't I watch your videos more often? I don't know...
I really need to catch up on "Castle Rock"... Also, yes, totally agree, "Mayhem" is fun!
@@fromtexas2734 I saw the sequel, but I liked much more the first movie
If you want kids to get into horror, the Gate.
I remember liking that one as a kid. The Monster Squad is another good one for kids.
Highly recommend Unsane more people should see that film
Agreed! Surprised there aren't more people talking about it.
Thank you so much for this video! Exactly what I needed.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you liked it ))
A movie that scared the hell out of me was THE STRANGERS with Liv Tyler. It's like ten years old. Watched on HBO at night then couldn't sleep
Loved it. I've always liked horror movies grounded in reality vs supernatural/zombie/vampire, etc.
@@JoshHarrisPhotography it's not very hyped unfortunately. Get Out and Us were enjoyable but did not scare me
Scream is more satisfactory after you’ve seen enough films to recognize the tropes.
Enjoy! Sounds like you have an awesome spooky plan for this October :D
You will never hear me say that horror is not scary, so I’m staying away from The Babadook and Midsommar. 😁 Still recovering from Hereditary, even though I saw it more than a year ago. 🤯
For a person who actively avoids horror I‘ve loved quite a few of these: Pan’s Labyrinth, Black Swan, Tale of Two Sisters, The Shining, Let The Right One In, and Train to Busan. 🥰 I also watched Silence of the Lambs a while back, but somehow didn’t like it. 🤭
Hadn’t heard of Unsane before: added to my list!
This is the best horror list I've ever seen. Thanks M
Aww thank you so much!
A quiet place is great starting point also
True, that would would definitely be a good one for people who want a fast paced thrill ride!
My Top 10 Horror movies are
1. Carrie (1979)
2. American Psycho
3. An American Werewolf in London
4. Evil Dead II
5. The Shining
6. Let the Right One In
7. Shaun of the Dead
8. A Tale of Two Sisters
9. Suspiria (1977)
10. Alien (1979)
That "yet" tho 1:30
I will go with the following to ease people into horror.
Zombieland. Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Jaws. Hush. Haunting of Hill House.
Love this video of yours
Totally considered putting "Zombieland" and "Tucker and Dale" on this list! I think horror comedies are a great gateway, even though they become funnier as you learn more about the genre.
@@fromtexas2734 Zombieland 1 gets a solid 9 out of 10. I absolutely love it. Double Tap gets a solid 2 out of 10. I absolutely hated it
I'm very excited to u r video maria.
Damn good 😁
Thank you so much!
Great list 👌👌👌, amazing movies 🎥 🎬, " let the right one in" is just brilliant, the babadook 👍, hereditary and midsommar were perfectly made, a new style of horror.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
You welcome, ✌️😊
Believe it or not, I only saw "Misery" for the first time in 2018
From Texas I thought there was a lot of overacting, especially from Duvall and Crothers. And the pacing and cinematography to me felt overly calculated. I think Kubrick went overboard on trying to make the film have a hypnotic quality, I found it really tedious. But I can definitely see why people love those aspects
Natalie Portman in Black Swan is arguably the best performance of last decade. Between that and Joaquin Phoenix in The Master.
You got me by putting Scream among the "well written" ones, not comical/fun (even though it's fun for sure).
Great list in gerneral.
Cheers!
Actually REALLY like [•REC], it may or may not be getting mentioned on my channel at some point this month ;)
@@ImpressionBlend I'll be waiting. I like your work and these thematic videos!
One of my favorites is a French film called, “Haute Tension.” Such a Stylish, emotional terrifying art house horror.
The ending is a Big Shocker!!!!
Yes, it took 10 minutes for me realize you were wearing a skeleton sweater. I enjoyed your recommendations and analytics. Great channel.
Thank you ))
I recommended Sleepaway Camp. traumatized me when I was 5-years-old. I don't know if I can watch that movie alone at night to be honest, lol!
Great video! :)
Thank you!
Can we get a horror classics list? Like dracula, frankenstein (from the 30s) cause i dont know the actual classic classic s
Hmm... Maybe I can do something about must-watch classic horror? Or just my classic horror favorites? I'll have to add that to my list of spooky season ideas
I always like to recommend Under the Shadow. Also, in the realm of sci-fi horror and Natalie Portman hype train, I think Annihilation is a great pick.
This is an EXCELLENT list
Thank you so much ))
Great job! As a nonhorror fan this was very interesting. I like Get Out and The Babadook because the characters are so good. I just don't like when the movies get too rapey or murdery
Thank you, Rachel! I feel ya, sometimes it's just too much violence and it feels very exploitative.
Have you seen “Don’t be afraid of the dark”? Absolutely phenomenal movie 👌
Like an adult version of Gremlins
YASSSSS!!!! I need some recs!!!!
Yes! Come to the dark side!
i think The Wailing should be on the list
I think it might be a little intense as an introduction to the genre, but I would absolutely put it on a horror must-watch list!
A film I would like to watch is ‘Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde’, a 🔨 horror that juxtaposes the Robert Louis Stevenson book with Jack the Ripper.
Love Cabin In The Woods, You’re Next & The Guest even Final Destination 1,2 & 5
I'm a huge fan of "The Cabin in the Woods" myself!
Pans labyrinth was robbed from the oscars. It should have absolutely won best foreign pic!!
Tucker and Dale vs Evil and Shaun of the dead are pretty great Fun Horror comedy films!
Agreed! Love both of them!
If you dont like horrors and gets easy frightened start with Gremlins and see if that gives you nightmares.
Great video! Just sometime I'd like to add: I wouldn't really recommend Scream to people who have no experience with horror movies tbh. It's a decent slasher, but really works best when it's deconstructing slasher tropes ... which you actually have to know about in order to appreciate.
