Considering his perfectionism, I’m sure he’s dealt with similar themes in his own life as a filmmaker. Ballet is an interesting field, it looks so graceful, playful and pretty, but it’s cutthroat, ruthless and the training is brutal, with military discipline, where one mistake could cost you not only your role but your entire career, depending on where you’re at. Filmmaking is similar.

This film is one of my all-time favorites, ever. I’ve seen it so many times, I remember seeing it at least three times in theatres, and then obsessively watching it on dvd afterwards. When Nina says “It’s MY TURN”, I get chills every time. I also have an intensely controlling mother too, so this movie just hits home for me in so many ways.
Loved the video analysis, Marianna! Thanks for covering this masterpiece! And yes, of course it’s a horror movie!

This is my favorite film of all time. I watched it 7 times in theaters, I became obsessed with it and I even bought two copies of it because I want to have it forever with me. The screenplay, the direction, the music and of course the performances are AMAZING.

Love how you incorporate Dostoevski & Jung into your analysis. Aronofsky maintains a motif of horror throughout most of his films, without them generally being considered “pure horror” films. The way he utilizes the soundscape is truly terrifying. I haven’t read much about how he works, but judging from the distinct aesthetic and deliberate (painstakingly so) shot compositions, I would hazard the guess Darren Aronofsky struggles himself with perfection & maintaining control as an artist. Great review! If you haven’t already, I suggest checking out Perfect Blue, the anime Black Swan was (allegedly) heavily influenced by.

This video is the PERFECT way to describe this masterpiece of a film.
The visual morphs from one character to another is masterful, such as the shadow-self Ninas transforming into Lilly or during the club scene, Sebastian Stan's character morphs into Thoma for a couple of frames.
Sound mixing is also genius and underrated, like Nina's breathing laced throughout, echoing during many of her hallucinations and when she performs as the black swan, leering at us with those terrifying red eyes.
There's a reason this remains one of my favourites of all time.

  • @sflengis
    @sflengis 4 года назад +4

Very well made video, I also had the same interpretation of the movie.
If had to choose my "One Horrifiying Moment", it would probably be the scene in Raw (2016), where Justine gives in to her instincts and tastes human flesh for the first time (by eating her sisters finger). That scene has been stuck in my head ever since the first viewing and it had a very strong effect on me.

The films even share a scene where the main character is in the bathtub and almost drowns herself. It's an awesome film and explores a lot of the same themes, even if anime is not your thing, I highly recommend Perfect Blue!

Great analysis! Black Swan is one of my favorite psychological/horror thrillers too. I think it'd work well in a film series with Whiplash and Enemy. Although it's not horror film, I'd recommend you check out the Georgian film And Then We Danced. It has some thematic similarities to films like Whiplash and Black Swan, while being more grounded in reality and the constraints of conservative Georgian society.

And such small moments in the film, too, that are scary, in addition to the big ones. Writing/thinking about it right now, we may have to pop in our blu ray tonight lol

I suspect that your inner (and outer) Russian especially connects with this film in part because of the complicated relationship of Russians to ballet. And so it hits on levels many non-Slav folk simply can't reach. It is indeed a great film, with a truly awe inspiring performance by Natalie Portman. Besides the many other aspects of this film I can't help but wonder if Vincent Cassel is a reflection of Arronofsky and that the film is also a fearsome meditation upon his own fraught relationships to and observations of women. Thanks again for the thoughtfulness Marianna.

You're absolutely right, I will watch ANY ballet film or documentary, it's just something I have interest in 100%. I think part of it is also that Eastern Europeans put a lot of emphasis on the theatre performance experience in general, it's something pretty much everyone I grew up with was introduced to at a very early age and something that's looked at with a lot of respect.

Black Swan stimulated thousands of reviews by movie goers when it came out. Love it or hate it, it affected them deeply. My shocking
moment is from the cheapie "Paranormal Activity", when a night camera/with sound facing the upstairs hallway from the master bedroom
catches this heavy clomping coming upstairs; the hall light goes on, then the blanket is pulled back, then an invisible force yanks a woman out
of bed and drags her off.

I don't know how you guys miss that the movie is about a sexual abusive relationship between the mom and Nina. It's so obvious that her mom is the one who has sex with her when she thinks it's Lily. Nina is traumatized her inner child in denial of her mother's abuse, her denial leads to her hallucinations to try and cope with her trauma. Also not a coincidence that her mother was also a ballerina. Her mom is well aware of the abuse she does on her daughter and actively try's to hide it for example the shrugs to hide her itching implying the issues we see in Nina in the movie have been an ongoing issue for years.

I hear all of this, but to me the more meaningful commentary is a criticism of the way that society pushes people (especially women) to be both “perfectly good” and “just bad enough”. The black swan is not freedom to me, but another identity forced on her. Since she wants to be perfect, she tries to perfectly walk the line, which is impossible. In the very moment she (temporarily) reaches this perfection that society says she should accomplish, she kills herself to cement that perfection.

This movie is about sexual abuse, and control between Nina and her mother. There was a brief moment in the movie where Nina’s mother comes to her room dressed in lingerie asking her if she’s ready for her! So you get the sense that the mothers controlling ways are sexual as well! That’s why she has fantasies about Lily! Which is why she splits between the white and black swan the white swan is her perfect side that she has to be for her mother and the black swan is her breaking free from her mother’s grip! Just my observation.

I was not impressed with this film on first viewing - I think at the time I had a more narrow view of what "horror" was and my expectation going into the film was not so much an analysis of the self but scares and gore. It did have some, but I remember feeling also that Nina was not a fleshed out enough character. I thought the perfectionist ballerina arc with a domineering mother was 1) not that interesting 2) a bit cliché. I would give it another viewing though, why not? I thought this movie had faded into relative obscurity and was not considered a modern classic.

That's one of the things I love about horror - we all perceive and define it differently, it's a very versatile genre. Would love to know what you think on a rewatch! Definitely not a film that faded in any - I see it come up quite often on various favorites and best of 21st century (so far) lists, though Aronofsky seems to be one of those directors people are really into or not at all.

If you loved this movie I’d recommend you listen to Black Swan by BTS (the Orchestra Version), it was inspired by this movie! 🖤
They also reference the Jungian philosophy in the album that contains it.

I got multiple inclinations that the mother had possibly sexually abused her. Am I the only one that got those vibes from the film?

You should do a series Marvel reviews that'd be awesome (and no, it doesn't matter if they're canon to the MCU or not, in fact my favorite one is Into the Spider verse which is obviously non canon). Anyway I've never seen Black Swan before but I'll definitely give it a shot
