Nice video… some games I was not aware of… something about 8 and 16 bit horror that caused one more intense scared feelings than many modern games (except the Necromorphs, that would scare me
Good list, I enjoyed the Elvira Games a lot and to be fair I was mostly a fan of the second one. The thing I liked about Elvira 2 was being able to turn nearly anything into spells, though you could stonewall yourself doing that if you did that to certain key items. I felt the graphical change to most of it was largely because it was a haunted movie set, rather than an actual haunted location, and it seemed the spirits involved were supposed to be animating movie stuff, so I assumed making it that goofy was intentional. I was a little surprised that "Realms Of The Haunting" and "Legacy: Realm Of Terror" didn't make the list if Elvira did. While goofy, and from the Dreamcast era/3DO era I think Illbleed (despite it being a mess) and/or Killing Time (a cult classic, and the flagship title for the 3DO) would have been big editions to the list. While to be fair Illbleed is lost to time as I don't think it was ever ported to anything (probably for good reason), Killing Time has seen PC ports, that said the big gimmick of "Full Motion Video" being used for some things did not age well, though it was pretty spectacular in the context of the time. I also did note with the mention of some obscure SNES titles that "Sweet Home" wasn't mentioned, when that was to many considered to be the freakiest game of all time, and has been getting Americanized versions for a very long time as far as I know.
Sweet home was for the nes/famicom, not for the snes. Also, this video is about 16- bit games, that’s why probably some of the games you mention (like killing time) aren’t in the list.
@@dieinfire920 He ,mentioned numerous PC/Amiga games such as Elvira and Waxworks, so I don't think it was intended to be console exclusive. I noticed afterwards that he has an 8 bit list in another video, but I haven't seen it yet, so perhaps Sweet Home would have fit better there. Not trying to complain too much, I know no list can ever be exhaustive as no one plays or is aware of everything, nor can a list be endless. I just thought those were some good ones worth mentioning. I have long felt "Legacy: Realm Of Terror" in particular never got the credit it deserved. "Realms Of The Haunting" had a lot of issues, but it covered a lot of the same territory as Elvira, and to be fair I have never seen anything else quite like it. Surprisingly those two seem to be missing from almost every list of horror games, which is why I went out of my way to mention them, as I know both had reasonable followings for their time. That said "Legacy: Realm Of Terror" was a pretty hard game, especially early on, so to be fair part of the problem might be that only extremely persistent gamers got to the parts where it really shined. I know a lot of people at that time who played it were incredibly frustrated over the way you had to dodge and avoid zombies, and the beginning favored very defensively built characters for that reason as there was pretty much no way to just kill them all like people at the time often wanted to do.
@@jeremyrichard2722 of course is not “console exclusive” because he also put in the video many arcade games. But as you also mentioned, the main reason sweet home wasn’t in the video, is because it’s a 8-bit game, not a 16-bit game which is what this video is about.
Honestly, I'd probably consider realms of the haunting closer to 32-bit. It's a little hard to differentiate with Computers. With that said, I didn't mention sweet home because the game is 8-bit, not 16-bit. I mentioned sweet home in last year's 8-bit horror video :)
Ha! Just played that Scooby game last month. I was able to beat the carnival as a kid, but only made it halfway through the hotel. Even as an adult, had to look up two clues where I was stumped.
Some great horror classics on this list, but I have to give a +1 on Aliens the arcade game. I still play that title on a pretty regular basis and it's one of my favorite movie based games of all time. It's one of those games that if you get hit, it's because you screwed up, as I can get pretty far in to the game on one credit. One of Konami's best hidden gems for sure, especially since it never got a home port.
It's cool that you worked on the GK1 remake -- it was my first adventure in the series & I enjoyed myself. Well, I had kind of played GK2 back when it released...but some PC problems had me losing my progress & I never revisited! The production values for GK1, the original DOS version, seems to be sky-high -- and I really loved the pixel graphics / palette of Sierra games during that period of time (Quest for Glory 4, one of my all-time favs, has similar art & dialogue portraits). I got that version on GOG about a year ago and do want to play through that version. Maybe I'll finally play through GK2, too. ;)
You missed the Veil of Darkness on PC. One of the best Retro adventure/action game, great game and great story. Other than Elvira adventure game, this is one of the most memorably adventure/action Retro PC game.
@@st1ka Go with the 90's OVA first. The 2010's series goes through to the end of the manga series, but it really doesn't capture the heart/feel of the manga of it. I'm not sure why.
I wonder if the model playing Ripley in the Aliens flyer is the same woman who plays Simon's bride-to-be in the Haunted Castle (Castlevania) arcade flyer?
Elvira Mistress of the Dark one is basically a Survival Horror game because there are enemies that can follow you through doors. It does not feel like an RPG because you only need specific items to beat it and health. I still think is a great game today.
when i was young my dad would take me to this place called nickel nickel, and in the back with all the other free to play classic arcade games like Golden Axe and the x men fighting game was Aliens. we beat it literally every time we went there. sadly we don't talk anymore but when i think of Aliens i think of all the good times i had there.
As someone making an action game while trying to avoid traditional combat, this video has been a gold mine for mechanic ideas to mix and match. I have thousands of games, but seems I need to branch out to more Japanese only releases. Surprised not to see Fatal Frame.
I feel compelled to mention there’s a Total Conversion for Splatterhouse using the Doom engine. Yes, an FPS Splatterhouse. Covers all the major locations (the mansion is absolutely insane), weapons & enemies. Well worth checking out 👌
I'm quite fond of silverload on ms-dos. way too obtuse to play from start to end, but it's good to explore the "open world-ish" town and score a few gory gameovers.
The scooby doo point and click would felt at home on DOS/Amiga, instead, the Amiga received a mediocre platformer, where you played as Scrappy Doo. Also, the time limit was more generous on the Japanese version of Splatterhouse 3, making things a little bit on the fair side.
Personally I feel like Clock Tower does the best at delivering an actual horror/ fear feeling through gameplay, the others are more "horror themed" imo, if that makes sense, like looking at good Halloween decorations vs actually going into a haunted house
Yeah, Clock Tower feels more like what we now view as survival horror. Though don't sleep on Gabriel Knight or Elvira, the horror mood is definitely there.
I remember Nosferatu being previewed in an early SNES magazine feature in 1991 or early 92..eirher in EGM or Nintendo Power... so i was shocked by how late in the systems life it came out.
I think you forgot a game called Laser Ghost, created by Sega for the arcade, this game is a shooting horror in the purest style of Ghostbusters and in my opinion the precursor of emblematic games such as House of the Dead, the story is simple, you must rescue a girl who has been kidnapped by a demon armed with your sophisticated laser weapons, the pixelation is quite good for the time in which the game was created, reminds me a lot of the cartoon series from which this game was inspired, the bosses are grotesque and unexpected, such as the first one that turns out to be a movie poster. It would be a good idea for you to take a look at it
That Scooby-Doo game I gotta try out! Some really nice recommendations here with a lot of variety in genres. Splatterhouse is the one people gotta try out if they haven't yet
Clocktower did have a means to fight back but it was never actually told to the player, it took a lot of stamina to use but there was times when Jennifer could be made to struggle with the scissors man by hitting the panic button at the right time stunning him, allowing you to run pass him so it was a god send if you got cornered but like I said the game never tells the player this or the fact your can make Jennifer sit on floor to recover stamina XD
In the Splatterhouse 3 game you can beat enemies quickly by grabbing them and using the headbutt attack (strangle attack if transformed), they make a lot of damage and they also work very well with bosses. Daggerfall, the second Elder Scrolls game, is quite spooky compared with the rest of the series, specially with the music in the dungeons and the sound effects.
Speaking of Samurai Ghost, a song from Genpei Toumaden "Yoshitsune" was remixed for Ridge Racer V on a track called "Samurai Rocket". When I heard the original song when playing Genpei Toumaden I lost my mind because that was my favorite track from RRV. Just a cool little fact I never hear anyone mention.
I played Elvira 2 on DOS and it was kind of fun but there were long terrible stretches, like the big dungeons which all looked the same and werent much fun. Even with a strategy guide they were unpleasant.
Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet, but you should check out, “Haunting: starring Polterguy” for sega genesis. The plot is you possess items In the home of the family that is responsible for your death. It’s a great comedy/ horror game. Also worth a mention js the Ms-dos series: Hugo’s house of horrors.
Thanks for including Laplaces Demon as I had never heard of this game which is no surprise considerjng its Japan only. I found the english patch for the rom and it looks interesting.
I don't see anyone else mentioning this so I guess I should, but "Musya" is the same as "Musha", just spelled under the older romanization system Also, it means "Warrior"

I mentioned sweet home in last year's 8-bit horror video :)
@@st1ka realms of haunting is would definitely be 32 bit on pc.
amiga elvira works on stuff marketed as 16 bit, good enough.
Ha! Just played that Scooby game last month. I was able to beat the carnival as a kid, but only made it halfway through the hotel. Even as an adult, had to look up two clues where I was stumped.
Oh yeah the game is genuinely difficult
Lista espectacular! Nunca tinha ouvido falar do Nosferatu! Plataformas de "Prince of Persia" com combate de "Beat 'em up"? Bora lá!
haha, espero que gostes
Some great horror classics on this list, but I have to give a +1 on Aliens the arcade game. I still play that title on a pretty regular basis and it's one of my favorite movie based games of all time. It's one of those games that if you get hit, it's because you screwed up, as I can get pretty far in to the game on one credit. One of Konami's best hidden gems for sure, especially since it never got a home port.
it's such a good game! :D
Other than Elvira adventure game, this is one of the most memorably adventure/action Retro PC game.
splatterhouse 3 scared the shit out of me when I was a kid
Haha I don't blame you. Those cut scenes were pretty effed up
Ushio and Tora! That's a great series!
definitely need to check out the anime
@@st1ka Go with the 90's OVA first. The 2010's series goes through to the end of the manga series, but it really doesn't capture the heart/feel of the manga of it. I'm not sure why.
@@sleepingkirby sounds good!
Aliens archade is just .... Perfect
oh man, I forgot about the elvira game. yeah, that game was hard. and the controls for the blocking/attacking.
I wonder if the model playing Ripley in the Aliens flyer is the same woman who plays Simon's bride-to-be in the Haunted Castle (Castlevania) arcade flyer?
Knowing Konami's posters? Probably haha
Now THAT'S an interesting bit of obscure knowledge right there!
Elvira Mistress of the Dark one is basically a Survival Horror game because there are enemies that can follow you through doors. It does not feel like an RPG because you only need specific items to beat it and health. I still think is a great game today.
Yep kinda. Sorta like an early prototypical verion of the genre
when i was young my dad would take me to this place called nickel nickel, and in the back with all the other free to play classic arcade games like Golden Axe and the x men fighting game was Aliens. we beat it literally every time we went there. sadly we don't talk anymore but when i think of Aliens i think of all the good times i had there.
Oh man, those memories are worth gold
This is truly a nice list of horror games, damn some of them I've never seen anywhere. Great job!
Thank you! I try! ^^
Nobody likes being shown exactly what to do in a video game, but the Elvira games sure do have a nice couple of pointers.
yeah exactly lol
Aliens arcade was just incredible.
Such a cool game!
As someone making an action game while trying to avoid traditional combat, this video has been a gold mine for mechanic ideas to mix and match. I have thousands of games, but seems I need to branch out to more Japanese only releases. Surprised not to see Fatal Frame.
Glad I could help :)
Fatal Frame isn't 16bit hence why I didn't include it ^^
Nosferatu's MC put Belmont family to shame. He punched monsters and "Dracula" in the face.
They need to put that Scooby-Doo game on Gog! I’d buy it :)
I feel compelled to mention there’s a Total Conversion for Splatterhouse using the Doom engine.
Yes, an FPS Splatterhouse. Covers all the major locations (the mansion is absolutely insane), weapons & enemies. Well worth checking out 👌
Oh wow, that sounds incredible haha
speaking objectively, the 2014 Gabriel Knight remaster was excellent.
I'm quite fond of silverload on ms-dos. way too obtuse to play from start to end, but it's good to explore the "open world-ish" town and score a few gory gameovers.
ooh I actually don't know that game. I'll have to check it out
oh never heard of that one before but just looked it up and it seems interesting
These games are pretty horrifically awesome
I miss the days
New games are not really as fun they're used to
The scooby doo point and click would felt at home on DOS/Amiga, instead, the Amiga received a mediocre platformer, where you played as Scrappy Doo.
Also, the time limit was more generous on the Japanese version of Splatterhouse 3, making things a little bit on the fair side.
Ah interesting! I guess the change was done to fight the rental market
Great video I'm glad RUclips recommended your videos
hehe thank you! If you feel you might miss on my videos, you can always ring that bell icon ^^
@@st1ka just did 👍
Thank you ^^
I always knew you were a Sega guy :D....glad you let us know though, you're the man
Good video, seeing Clock Tower i remember of SOS for Snes and i think that launched in all country.
Clock Tower is SO cool
Personally I feel like Clock Tower does the best at delivering an actual horror/ fear feeling through gameplay, the others are more "horror themed" imo, if that makes sense, like looking at good Halloween decorations vs actually going into a haunted house
Yeah, Clock Tower feels more like what we now view as survival horror. Though don't sleep on Gabriel Knight or Elvira, the horror mood is definitely there.
I had no idea there was a Scooby Doo game in the vein of Day of the Tentacle.
right?! It's tottally the right genre
Elvira was simply amazing
right?! :D
That last game on the list seems really cool! I've gotta see if I can get the patch to work on ZSNES.
I remember Nosferatu being previewed in an early SNES magazine feature in 1991 or early 92..eirher in EGM or Nintendo Power... so i was shocked by how late in the systems life it came out.
interesting, I guess it was stuck in development hell
I think you forgot a game called Laser Ghost, created by Sega for the arcade, this game is a shooting horror in the purest style of Ghostbusters and in my opinion the precursor of emblematic games such as House of the Dead, the story is simple, you must rescue a girl who has been kidnapped by a demon armed with your sophisticated laser weapons, the pixelation is quite good for the time in which the game was created, reminds me a lot of the cartoon series from which this game was inspired, the bosses are grotesque and unexpected, such as the first one that turns out to be a movie poster. It would be a good idea for you to take a look at it
In Laplace demon, journalists can inflict regular damage if they equip a weapon. And then their special let's them him all monsters in a row.
aah thank you
The Gabriel Knight remake was great. You should be proud to have worked on it.
aww thank you!
That Scooby-Doo game I gotta try out!
Some really nice recommendations here with a lot of variety in genres.
Splatterhouse is the one people gotta try out if they haven't yet
Heck yeah
I came here for the 16 bit horror games and dammit. I got em.
haha thank you
Did not know about the Elvira games. The artwork is impressive.😮
right?! It's so cool!
This is fantastic stuff man ❤
The Scooby Doo Game looks like a cheap DOTT Clone. But as you said, its the perfect formula for a Scooby Doo Game!
Clocktower did have a means to fight back but it was never actually told to the player, it took a lot of stamina to use but there was times when Jennifer could be made to struggle with the scissors man by hitting the panic button at the right time stunning him, allowing you to run pass him so it was a god send if you got cornered but like I said the game never tells the player this or the fact your can make Jennifer sit on floor to recover stamina XD
aaah thank you!
In the Splatterhouse 3 game you can beat enemies quickly by grabbing them and using the headbutt attack (strangle attack if transformed), they make a lot of damage and they also work very well with bosses.
Daggerfall, the second Elder Scrolls game, is quite spooky compared with the rest of the series, specially with the music in the dungeons and the sound effects.
aah thank you for that
When you were talking about Scoopy-Doo is when I said no-mo4Me!
I think that reference went over my head 😅
Speaking of Samurai Ghost, a song from Genpei Toumaden "Yoshitsune" was remixed for Ridge Racer V on a track called "Samurai Rocket". When I heard the original song when playing Genpei Toumaden I lost my mind because that was my favorite track from RRV. Just a cool little fact I never hear anyone mention.
oh damn I didn't know that. That's cool as heck
Great video! Laplace no Ma looks really interesting. One of my favorite 16-bit horror themed games is Majyuuou for Super Famicom.
oooh thank you for the recomendation
I played Elvira 2 on DOS and it was kind of fun but there were long terrible stretches, like the big dungeons which all looked the same and werent much fun. Even with a strategy guide they were unpleasant.
Yeah sadly the game is pretty uneven
Its spook time~
Yush :D
Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet, but you should check out, “Haunting: starring Polterguy” for sega genesis. The plot is you possess items In the home of the family that is responsible for your death. It’s a great comedy/ horror game.
Also worth a mention js the Ms-dos series: Hugo’s house of horrors.
Oh those are great sugestions :D
Great video.👍 A lot of good games that I didn't hear of it before. I think I'm gonna subscribe. :)
Thank you!! :D
Laplace no Ma reminds me ofCapcom's infamous Sweet Home, with its own twists to it.
As someone who has read Ushio no Tora, I say: Read it. It's one of my favorite manga.
I might check it out ^^
Thanks for including Laplaces Demon as I had never heard of this game which is no surprise considerjng its Japan only. I found the english patch for the rom and it looks interesting.
Hope you enjoy it! :D
Aliens Arcade was so fun. I kind of wished some of the odd alien types had actually been in the movies.
Someone needs to port the Aliens game to modern systems too
Great video. Definitely adding a few to by backlog.
glad I could help! ^^
That’s funny because Splatterhouse 2 is my favorite of the trilogy.
Nothing wrong with that, we all have our preferences :P
I don't see anyone else mentioning this so I guess I should, but "Musya" is the same as "Musha", just spelled under the older romanization system
Also, it means "Warrior"
In Clocktower, Jennifer there looks very much like Jennifer Connelly, particularly in Phenomena.
I’m so disappointed Clock Tower does not feature an anime art style. I guess we can’t always have that.
Great video, you opened my eyes on very interesting games. I'm glad that I've Subscribed
Thank you! :D
Great video thanks my dude. I didn’t know about the Scooby doo game. I think that will be great to play with my daughter. Thanks again 😎👍🏼
hope you enjoy it! :D
I'm glad included some Amiga games 🤘🏻
I try to cover a wide range of systems! :)
