In 1962 my friend John Shelton's father Charles was an RF 101C pilot and was sent to Saigon to train South Vietnamese Air Force pilots and 3 years later he was shot down while on a recon mission near Sam Neua on his 33rd birthday 29 April 1965 and was captured by the Pathet Lao 3 days later. Did he ever come home in 1973? No. Where is he now? Unknown because it's unknown how and when he died in captivity and his remains to this day have never been found or recovered. He was known to be held in one of the caves in Vieng Xai
It is indeed. I remember when it aired on PBS alot and I could have easily ordered this for purchase but now I think "I can easily watch this on RUclips."
US was able to make peace with North Korea and China because they did not stop at the pre-war border, and instead pushed ahead until reaching the Chinese borders. That made Mao sent troops in the war, but eventually the armistice re-established the pre-war borders. This also allowed US to keep troops on DMZ to maintain the status quo. When LBJ rejected the need to invade North Vietnam, he ensured that South Vietnam will eventually lose.
Ch1na more or less defeated an entire alliance of western nations virtually single handedly in the Korean War (literally fresh out of the Chinese civil war), because by the time the west had crushed the KPA reaching the Yalu, China was fighting virtually alone (because much of the combat strength of the KPA was vanquished). If N Vietnam would've been invaded, China would've done the same thing there. It would've been a loss either way. Wars in Asia are always a bad idea, because the nations there on the mainland have all the advantages locally.
Ch1na saved North Korea during Korean War from the western alliance, and to a large extent is the reason why Amer1ca lost the Vietnam War as well (due to all the assistance to N. Vietnam). Ch1na was very powerful back then (on land, and in terms of airpower mostly), and now is the sole world superpower by real facts and figures, as well as capabilities. Ch1na massively grew their industrial capacity, and now also has the biggest Navy, and ground based strategic missile forces, even if most are conventionally armed. Theyre now also the world leader in most tech that even matters in terms of making war. They've come a long way in several decades.
I know the comparison is dumb, but bare with me: ten slow planes, made out of wood and paper manage to cripple a giant armored warship in ww2, but in Vietnam the most powerful jets and bombers, dropping every bomb and firing every rocket made on Planet Earth are unable to smash a road and a couple of hidden bunkers.
I don't get why the first episode has so many views but the rest of them as you go down have less and less? How could you only watch one episode lol, these are all amazing. People are weird.
"White house believed that B-52 were too destructive" so they were wiling to risk more lives of pilots to do similar amount of damage but at cost of more lives. Because they would still destroy targets all over only they would not do it with big planes that did look intimidating but were able to fly high under protection of height but were sending smaller planes that had to fly lover and were more possible to get shot down. But looked less intimidating....
@championszz During Operation Linebacker 2 during the Christmas bombings of Hanoi and Haiphong SAMS brought down alot of them and many pilots were captured while more were KIA'ed or ended up MIA but the Christmas bombings really battered the air defenses of the North Vietnamese. Alot of the POWs who were held in Hoa Lo aka The Hanoi Hilton really cheered when they saw the bombings from their cells and their guards were scared shitless
@championszz North Vietnam may have been a third world country, but it's Anti aircraft defenses were first class and state of the art thanks to the Soviets.
looks like a pos compared to a y22 fighter.just looking at it.Everything is sticking out bouncing radar heat and reflective points. one part of the nose was black burnt probably something from afterburner and the really chinchy front well after grappled from cable turning around and spinning. back in the day the landing gear was always the worst.
Amer1ca too, because they were worried about starting a war with Ch1na, and even made ROE for pilots to ensure they didn't fire on potential Chicom jets......for that reason. Ch1na is the entire reason too, why North Korea exists, because they saved the North from Amer1ca, who even with help from allies couldn't beat Ch1na.
Love the eerie, 80s synth style music
I'm guessing you didn't binge watch the documentary in a weekend. The music was torture.
@@chrisbinch800 you have extremely bad taste.
I like the music too, it seems like it’s almost a dream
I love it def my favourite aspect of the show !
@@chrisbinch800I'm right there with you man, I can only take so much lol

My respects for the brave people of Vietnam 🫡🫡🫡. From Romania 🇹🇩
All these documentaries leave out the best part of war - the USO shows.

Do unto others as it will be done to you has never been understood by the USA. The USA has feared others and fought their own bad Karma.

if a ship is hit with a torpedo it sinks ... a dirt road is easily patched up
The United States fought with the spirit of the jungle! And is it possible to defeat spirits!?)))
If South Vietnam participated Operation Ranch hand, that would legalize spraying defoliants wouldn't it?

and pigs can fly
@championszz that’s false. The B52’s flew at 30k feet, making them almost impossible to shoot down.
