- Shen's my personal favorite Kung Fu Panda villain, intriguing backstory and motivation paired with Gary Oldman's amazing performance. And of course, his theme is simply extraordinary, personally my favorite villain theme in the Kung Fu Panda movies and one of the best villain themes in either composer's catalogue. There's something so powerful and mighty about Shen's theme, with the Chinese instrumentation not only adding authenticity but showing his regality. He's as powerful as he is elegant and royal, and the music does a great job at being able to showcase his theme in brighter and softer tones. But it's the structure of his main motif/melody that's so captivating; it perfectly portrays all of the regality I've mentioned before, and the power, but also the underlying tragedy and sorrow that plagues his character. At the root of his theme, no matter how loud or happy it sounds, is this lament that looms over his character. And yet somehow, his theme can be elevated to horrifically malevolent levels, with industrialistic percussion and a sweeping orchestra showing his ruthlessnessband cruelty as a harsh juxtaposition to how his theme is otherwise. Not to even mention the other motifs associated with Shen that add to his character; that salacious five note motif underpinning his darker and more mischievous actions, and the various action riffs and motifs that are reused over and over again throughout his action scenes, some culminating in his final, desperate moments of the film in climactic fashion. What more can you say about Shen's theme that isn't evoked through the music? Truly one of my personal favorite villain themes of all time.

Years go by and Lord Shen is still my Favorite Villain from an animated movie, the design and voice acting are fantastic, the music, the dialogue, the personality, the presence, he even has funny non-cringe moments, his connections with Po in their stories, he has an interesting motivation and an ending that leaves you satisfied, he is an excellent character

I get why people say Kai has the best theme song but i find Shen theme very powerful too
Kai’s theme is more popular for sure but I enjoy this one more. Both are really good though.

Unpopular Opinion : I prefer Shen theme over Kai's. Yea the latter goes incredibly hard but we're more talking about a succesion of Imagine Dragons remixes leitmotif. Here it's pure original epicness, i just can't not headbang when listening to these elegant yet so badass parts :

I have been obsessed with this theme for a decade, and I was delighted to see you upload a suite. There are several mixes on RUclips, but it's a difficult soundtrack to rearrange, because almost every motif segues into another. Truly, the momentum and pacing of the KFP scores is one of their greatest attributes, but it makes cutting cues in and out of tracks rather difficult. You have done a marvelous job with seamless transitions, and I commend you for it. You've also included the lesser-known unreleased pieces. In fact, I hadn't heard the rejected version of "Surrender Palace" before, so I was delighted to hear a new variation! I also always enjoy your evocative descriptions of each theme you compile.
I have it on good authority (though I don't claim to know this for certain) that Shen's theme was composed by Powell. It's difficult to tell beyond that which composer you're hearing: Zimmer, Powell, or Balfe (who composed "More Cannons," I believe). Supposedly, Powell showed up, wrote Shen's theme (and I believe "My Fist Hungers for Justice" sounds very Powell-esque) and a few other cues, and then left due to creative differences with the director, who wanted a lot of material reused from the first film. Powell is insistent upon inventing new material for sequels, as evidenced by his work on the How to Train Your Dragon series. Anyway, this is all hearsay, but I like collecting these facts from the community.

Definitely my favorite theme suite of this franchise for all the reasons you stated. Shen is possibly my favorite animated villain of all time.

I don't like how underrated Shen's theme is, while Kai's theme is offten so praised by the general public....
Kai's theme is simply an Imagine Dragons song re-arangement...It contributes nothing to his character, has very little variation, and overall is more bland...
