>white peacock >name literally god >gives po the hardest time >died from his own rage >has a deadly army that took over the empire this guy's too much for dreamworks villain
if you think about it, he's very similar to Voldemort: > had some large amount of power and an important bloodline > some unreliable prophecy told him that a certain person would kill him > attempts to destroy that person, who is saved by his mom, who dies; the prophecy is made true by this > goes into hiding for long amount of time before reemerging out of the shadows with newfound power > takes what is "rightfully his" > the hero from the prophecy rises against him despite the odds, and decides to face that hero in his arrogance, leading to his doom. except Shen was deeply menacing, had great dialogue and greatly scarred the hero emotionally at a young age, and also had better written motivations with one clear goal in mind.
Churchill: How....how did-how...how did you do it? Hitler: Well I convinced you guys that the Ardennes were impenetrable, got around the Maginot- Churchill: No, not that. How did you create a military? I took away your colonies. Everything! I humiliated you for life!
In Kung Fu Panda 1, he learnt about physical training. In Kung Fu Panda 2, he learnt about mental training. In Kung Fu Panda 3, he learnt about spiritually training. All the key components of Kung Fu.
Martin Halvorsen they want to make 6 movies and I’ve even heard rumors of 9 but I’m pretty sure that 4,5 and 6 are confirmed but aren’t coming out soon
Lord Shen is un-ironically the greatest villain in all of DreamWorks movies. None of the others come close with how they effect both the world and the characters on a physical and emotional level. He was cunning, clever, arrogant and insatiably vengeful. He meant more to the main character than any other villain in the Dreamwork lineup. Everything he does makes sense and has thought put into it, all of his flaws have a great amount of setup and reasoning behind them. I will argue till the end of days that Shen takes the top spot by an insanely wide margin and easily can claim a spot as one of the greatest villains in animation.
It could be argued that Shen isn't arrogant Arrogant is "having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities." He clearly isn't like that with his abilitys as he agreed he was no match to the Kung Fu of Master Croc, Master Ox and Master Rhino. He didn't act as if he was as important as anyone else either from what i remember
They made him scarier than a snow leopard that had half a films worth of build up on its side. Shen should honestly get a movie or movies. Considering that Kung Fu Panda still doesn't have a film related to its universe in production theres a fair possibility we will. Especially if dreamworks sees that there is demand for Shen
@Instinct Oh yea thats true. Shen however did the same thing but in a different way. Yea he was still very powerful at Kung Fu but Shen had a weapon that not even Shifu, Master Rhino or Shen himself couldn't stop it literally made Kung Fu obsolete to all but the most powerful ones such as Po and most likely Oogway. Shen wasn't even set up to be invincible he was even shown to be at some points to be afraid of Po. Or at the start battle when Shen demolished 2 masters of Kung Fu to be stopped by Master Rhino shattering his knifes
@@llamabomb9375 Yeah, it wasn't like they were just going to forgive him if he stopped. He'd probably be executed. So even if he knew deep down that he had already lost and that it was pointless, he still had to keep going.
@@aliyarubinstein6587 it wasn't only because of himself knowing the world won't forgive him, but also the victims who he had killed and sacrificed and all. Truly well made character.
I am not gonna lie. At the end, I was hoping for Shen to realize his mistakes and change but sadly, he was far beyond that point where he still could have been saved. Awesome character.
The subtlety that Gary brought to Shen was just breathtaking. You could tell that Shen knew what he was doing was wrong, but that it was too far gone to stop. The slight quavers in the voice, the emotion that gets quickly suppressed... just masterful voice acting.
@@jammygamer8961 One could make that argument for all 3 (Kai was Ooguay's brother-in-arms after all). The problem Kai had is they didnt really delve too deeply into setting him up like the other 2, which is why most folks feel like the third movie is the worst.
@@KiraSilversoul Lol thats not the problem with the film. The reason i say Kai is evil because even after hundreds of years being trapped in the spirit realm he still wanted to control Chi and wanted to ruin everything Oogway has built because of Oogway beating him before. He showed no remorse but infact pride when he exclaimed he was the maker of widows while Shen and Tai both only did what they thought was needed.
no cap, Shen was the most intimidating and cunning villain of the Kung fu panda franchise, no other villain damaged Po spiritually like he did. 100/10 best villain
No other VILLAIN. In Kung Fu Panda 3, Po kills himself and Kai. And when Kai and Po are in the spirit realm, Kai nearly takes over his soul. But I still think Shen is the best :p
Tell me about it! They had all these great villains with great backstories and motivations but they were effectively forever ruined by jack black...as a panda
@@austinwilson7373 You forget Shen is the only one who wasn't banished to the spirit realm and he also attempted to kill himself. At the end of Kung Fu Panda 2 you see that can that hit Shen sunk along with him before the boat began to burn. Now considering Shen is strong enough to be hit by a war hammer so hard it shatters the knifes he is holding with hitting them its safe to assume he is very powerful. Its likely that he just got smashed through the very heavily damaged wooden hull and into the water. Shen is likely to of survived
@@jammygamer8961 hopefullu well see him in kung fu panda 5. The character is so awesome, but we only got to really see him fight two Times in the movie. The way he battles, and uses his tail while fighting is so satisfying. The best villiain in kung fu panda ever. Maybe even best character.
Fun fact about Shen’s design, specifically his colors- White symbolizes death (but also innocence) and is associated with the element of metal and the rooster, another colorful and aggressive avian. Black is a color that is associated with evil and sadness. Red is associated with fire, which is what Shen’s weapons use to wreak their havoc. The writers and the artists really put a lot of time into Shen, and Oldman obviously had a ball voicing him. Nice job, Dreamworks
@@theshycryo You’re not wrong! Shen has a lot of black and white, so while the genocide of the Pandas was the catalyst, it ultimately was Shen’s inability to forgive that killed him. That’s actually a really good point!
I swear lord shen is the best antagonist in Dreamworks. The backstory of him feeling betrayed by his own parents and how he wants revenge for his suffering is so great. Most films make a joke out of why they are evil but they didn’t take this with a grain of salt. Also when he legit made Po almost die because of a simple symbol.
Sadistic, brilliant, easily my favourite. Uses an elegant but shimmering deadly martial arts style that’s just stunning to watch in animation, no wonder he was the hardest to animate in the entire movie. All that work was so worth it, i’ll remember this villain for a very long time!
I also love how his first fight shows he is a capable warrior but can be beaten quite easily by an experienced master. It helps explain why he builds up his army so much and makes him somewhat vulnerable.
I think what makes Shen such a relatable villain is that even though he's intimidating and he's dangerous and a great character. There is pain in him. It reflects in almost everything he does in the movie.
Katika Harris everything he does in the movie reflects the feeling people sometimes get where they start to breathe heavier and tear up with anger or passion, I feel bad for Shen
He thought his parents hated him because they banished him They only did that because they loved him and wanted him to become redeemable which ended up killing them
That’s what I really liked about it, how it was a darker tone than your typical kids film. Dreamworks got a lot of hate though from parents about how dark the film was so they made the 3rd film much lighter and campier.
It had a more serious note yes, but that made the story so much better. War has to be taken seriously even or maybe especially by animation. They fleshed out the world so much woth the second part, we got to see that there actually is a kingdom, shogunate or however the chinese form is called. Most animation movies these days sacrifice a good story for cheap laughs. That is sad, but that makes the rare good ones even better.
Too bad they don't wanna expose their kids with dark cartoons like this. Parents also need to show their kids the harsh reality too to make them realize that once they grow up, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. The second movie taught a valuable lesson too. No matter how hard you went through, achieving inner peace is always possible if you embrace the hardships and let it flow. The past cant be changed. Dont hold deep grudges, or inner peace would be impossible. Shen didnt learn this, so he was shocked as to how Po managed to achieve it despite being scarred for life of losing his family throughout his life (before kfp 3). Man, i wish if they make another movie, they would make another that could par the first and second movie. The third movie seemed to lack something and it felt less weight than the first two films. I hope they take the risks, if it means we get a good story plot and not listen to negative comments. That is, if they make another kfp movie.
@@souhiyori8032 I mean what is it gonna do? Tell the kids that war isnt all glory and fun? That is why a majority of people nowadays have become so vulnerable, often having a weak and easily manipulable psyche.
I'm so glad they didn't "redeem" him at the end. Shen was a fantastic villain, and his entire character would have been totally undermined in an unrealistic and unsatisfying way if he'd accepted Po's offer of mercy. Easily one of my favorite villains in film history.
Him accepting death despite being able to dodge the falling cannon was one of the best move dreamworks did for him. He was already fucked up to begin with, what more could he do to "redeem"? All his efforts will just go to waste, might as well finish the job. I love it ✨
The only part of him that could still be redeemed was the part that knew he didn't deserve it. He chose to die as himself rather than sacrifice his pride to accept a salvation he hadn't earned. Was he selfish, petty, narcissistic, and callous? Absolutely. But he was also a warrior, and though he died a villain, he died a warrior as true as any other.
I don't know if it would have ruined it, at least for me personally, but I still think it's better and makes more sense for the character that he ended up dying. Just wish he had more screen time ;)
I know righttt. He's one of the smartest villains to not underestimate their enemies/the hero. He overestimates them so that he can plan ahead and make back ups if it won't work. And him bringing a cannon in a fist fight is not cowardly, it's playing smart. There arent rules that states you cant bring one, right? That's why he's deadly. He plays or fights smart.
Shen is a good villain and it was even better because they used a peacock which normally symbolizes immortality and other good things. They made a magestic and beautiful creature evil and cold. How I see peacocks are normally kind creatures but three made shen completely different from that image of peacocks. Stunning
HOLY CRAP, remember the intro to this movie when the soothsayer was narrating Shen's backstory? She said something about how fireworks brought beauty and joy, but Shen discovered that he could use it for evil.
Clearly you haven't been to pakistan then 😂 when I went to visit my family, I was attacked by two peacocks. My life flashed before me eyes and suddenly all I could imagine was this guy.
Also Red and White roses. And Po's has more black than white while Shen is the opposite. It could be seen as that Po has more of a Bias to one side of the Ying and Yang while Shen is Biased more towards the other side
They had there own theme actually Po: always appear in dark And always wet everytime you see him His Main element is water and wood(plants) Bonus: his final battle where he redirect the cannonballs he is standing on a boat(wood) and sorrounded by water around him. Lord Shen: however always appear in bright and dry themes everytime you see him His main element is fire and metal Bonus:his weapon breaths fire and spits metal. Make much more sense
Yet another masterpiece that the Academy Awards ignored let me put this alongside Avengers Endgame, Infinity War, Harry Potter, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
I am amazed at how well made Shen is. The character design in itself is absolutely perfect. It's baffling that they could turn a peacock, which is usually symbolism for beauty and peace into a bitter and cold force. It's absolutely remarkable how much of a threat Shen is as a character. Not by making him extremely strong, but by making him too cunning for his own good. He knows that he isn't in ths right, but he's gone too far to stop. The way he messes with Poe's mind throughout the entire movie is brilliant.
I love the thought process of how the creators came up with Shen as a villain. Thinking, “well we had Tai Lung who was a physical impressive villain but had no real connection to the protagonist until the ending, so what if the next villain is someone who isn’t as physically intimidating but makes up for that vulnerability by having a great influence and intellect to create weapons of war while also having an emotional connection to Po and his past.” What a great team to give such a great villain.
*Tai-Lung has no connection to Po* *Kai has no connection to Po other than Po literally only knowing Oogway* *Shen literally gave Po PTSD and Po can’t even remember why*
@@bayonetonazero2535 They all connect to him in one way. Tai Lung wants to destroy Po because he wants the Dragon Scroll and wants to defeat him to become the Dragon Warrior. Shen wants to change his destiny and kill Po out of his paranoid nature. Kai saw that Po was chosen by Oogway to stop him and then, seeking to prove Oogway wrong and take revenge on him, he wanted to kill Po.
Shen's connection to Po is personal. Shen committed genocide on Po's village, Shen is the reason his mother was forced to orphan her son so he wouldn't die. Shen had the most impact on Po's life. It's why Po has PTSD. Had Shen done nothing. Po would grow up in his village with his biological parents. He might not have become the Dragon Warrior.
I love that they also thought ahead in making sure NO other pandas appeared in the first movie apart from Po himself. Indirectly establishing the rarity of pandas in the audience's subconscious. Brilliant foreshadowing.
@sammy lawrence the bendy fan Shen wasn't a kung fu warrior, though, so would he even have considerable chi to harvest? He was just a martial arts master, but he didn't need spiritual alignment to be a formidable opponent. Also he was a genius who invented the cannon, so there's that.
The soothsayer foretold that "If Shen continues down his path he would be defeated by a warrior of black and white". Aside from how Po defeats him, this also applies to Shen. After his flagship is destroyed he is white and black from the soot and dust, and he fights as a warrior and not a tactician or a lord. He is the one who brings himself down. God I love this movie
@Stormgem Thunder Grimmel was the best villain, because he was Hiccup if Hiccup decided to kill toothless. However you are right he could have been written better.
@@Darksaviour I would pick Drago for best villain (he was so close to conquer berk and their dragons!) we had stakes with him. Grimmel was interesting but his writting felt as if he had to be there just to be an antagonist. We needed more development for him! Also, he was precupied with Toothless so the stakes did not feel that huge to me as with Drago.
sisters8a Drago did have the highest stakes. But a story doesn’t have to have a big world ending event or fate of everything hinges on one moment. Sometimes personal stakes are just as escalating, especially if it’s for characters we love like hiccup and toothless.
How to Train Your Dragon also had an antagonist who wasn't that bad in the form of the Red Death since it was just an animal following natural instinct
The part that really got me about this one was the fact that Shen not only committed genocide, but at the end he literally killed himself by letting his own weapon of destruction destroy him. That's some dark stuff man
That can be argued because Tai lung is scary in every scene he is in except the final fight and with shen you feel kinda sorry for him especially in the end where he just accepted death, and with the voice acting and his actions you can tell he was scared of Po especially when he gets desperate
@@banana_joe557 if you think about it all the actions he took were because he tried to avoid the fate that terrified him. When you think about the situation he was faced with while i or you wouldn't agree with it, you can understand why he did the genocide
10:57 “you want to know so badly? You think knowing will heal you, huh? Feel some crater in your soul? Well here’s your answer: your parents didn’t love you. But here, let me heal you!”
One of the good aspects of the first two films of the trilogy is the deep characteristics and dramas of the villains. It is rare to have villains who give you such an emotional chills, not even once but twice in the same god damn series.
@@codybender5332 yeah I felt it was too light. Like part 1 we had Ti Lung who wanted revenge at Shifu and the dragon scroll for himself but he was pretty intimidating. Shen was a much darker villain and threatening to Po and China. I felt that 3 didnt feel that good compared to the first 2 films.
I think what made Kai a weak villain for me is that the moral of his story was essentially the same as Shen’s: the more you take, the less you have. Both were ravenous warlords trying to fill some void with power. What made Tai Lung different was that he wasn’t motivated by power per se, but instead was driven by a noble ambition (become the greatest Kung fu practitioner) that became poisoned by vengefulness. And Shen of course was unique because he was the first power/destruction driven villain in the series.
Tai Lung was motivated by hard work and dedication. He was destroyed by the belief that hard work can do anything, which is not in and of itself a bad philosophy but without ambition being tempered and understanding that fine line it can lead to a crisis of self when you meet a brick wall. Tai Lung couldn't accept his loss and to a fair extent, it was his father ambition and philosophy that failed him. In Shen the story is reversed. Shen fails his parents with a new philosophy of aggression and his own ambition in his creation, canons, and his willingness to invest in its future at any means possible. Not realizing that on that day he a had a choice between family and creation. Tail Lung made no new path in himself. He trusted his family. Shen did and lost his family trust. In the first one po is tempted by his father pessimism to be a simple noodle merchant but by his own luck-and actions...unintended as they were- he becomes the dragon warrior. With shen story, po finds himself drifting from his family in search of identity much like shen did. For different reasons, but at the core the divergence is there. Both of these characters are also dealing with a loss of family. One taken, one ejected from. My point is. Both of these stories had interconnecting themes and trials. I don't remember the third one at all because at his core Kai was just a bad guy martial artists but for some reason the theme of families were continued-with po village- also they ruined the mysticism of it all by literally turning kung fu into shiny green powers. In 2 inner peace was an exalted state that could be argued just as much within the user as in usage of soul jucii or whatever.
@@draekalloy3673 actually he was mad at oogway for betraying him even when he supported oogway and saved him. Both oogway and him were warlords then, and they would enhance they're power to get revenge on the people who ambushed them. But oogway saw that as breaking the code or something, because he was harming the same pandas who helped them
13:25 The way Shen cuts every rope when fighting Po is a very simple yet perfect allegory: even then he could still stop, atone for his crimes and maybe one day find peace. Instead he holds on to his rage, destroying whatever chance of redemption he could have and when faced with doom (the cannon falling on him) he accepts it, for he sees no other outcome that will end his suffering.
I love Lord Shen. His arrogance, his voice, his stance, his undermining tone. The way simply disrespects and spits on his enemies. It was all so beautiful. Especially the scene where he fans out his tail. Reminding Po's trauma. Then running out the window, gliding through the air with his tail. Best villain exit ever
He saw the error of his ways and finally let go of his hate and killed himself. Him having a second film trying to better himself and come to terms with his past would make a lot of sense. having 2 films showing the one above and a prequel to KFP 1 showing the events that took place and how the boat that baby Po was put in that was completely beached somehow unbeached itself would be rather interesting and seeing Shen and Soothsayer together would be fun
@@jammygamer8961 nah he didn't let go of his hate as he still attempted to kill Po even when he told him to let go of his past and the whole ''killing himself'' thing was Shen accidently cutting down the ropes holding the cannon in place and since he couldn't escape in time he accepted his fate by closing his eyes so in other words you saying Shen changed his ways is wrong while him ''killing himself'' is kinda true even though it was an accidental and blind choice made by him which led to his death
@UCE3s4TGUESv6NFcOBi66QoQ i see your hypothesis as well though out and with good explenations but Shen was injured from the explosion and seemed in to be caught in a rage when fighting Po and that basically murdering Po's family and village in an act of homicide has given Po some serious trauma that HE OVERCOMES WHICH SHEN IS SHOCKED AND FURIOUS ABOUT IT thus results in him going into a RAGE cutting the ropes and ignoring the cannon falling, also the cannon ended up destroying the whole boat and caused an explosion so he couldn't have escaped due to the INJURY caused BY THE EXPLOSION and he used as much strength he has left as a final attempt at murder, couldn't realized it in time DUE TO HIS RAGE have OVERCOME HIM and becoming HELLBENT in KILLING PO also Shen going into a rage would be obvious since he may be cunning, intelligent and a strong fighter but he's also paranoid and a sociopath over a fortune that he DESTROYED AN ENTIRE VILLAGE, MURDERED PO'S MOM, KILLED ONE OF THE GREATEST KUNG FU MASTERS AND IMPRISONED 2 OF THEM, KILLED HIS OWN PARENTS, USED FIREWORKS AS WEAPONS etc so there you go

Kai is by far the worst villain in this franchise. Both Shen and Tai Lung are in a different league to Kai, but Shen is arguably the best of the two. Everything about Shen is absolutely amazing.
Kynam Van I realized the similarities between Shen and tai lung: they were both wronged by their father. (Shifu and shen’s unnamed dad). But The difference is Shen was power hungry while tai lung became arrogant from shifu training him.
I love Kai purely because of the potential for his character. They could have done so much with him, and the proof of that ability is through how amazing Shen was. They peaked at creating Shen. I was actually kind of insulted at what they did with Kai, especially with the overly comical final fight.
Shen is a sequel villain.villains like him had more sense of reality more than all disney villains combined. Dreamworks had the guts to include a dark content like genocide and suicide like shen did.
@@chadpeterson5698 hella cap, his internal conflict and justification for being “better” and “good” when his actions fall further and further into the depths, how he even believes it’s not his own faults that allowed him to become that way but god himself is at fault for allowing human depravity .. Frollo is a TOP TEIR kid’s movie villain.. no contest on that.
The Soothsayer implied that Shen would be defeated by a warrior of black and white. But get this: Shen is a white peacock. And during that final fight against Po Shen was covered in black burnt marks all over is feathers and ropes. So basically Shen was his own enemy all along. Po did not even touch Shen in that final fight. All he did was dodge. Shen was responsible for that cannon dropping on him and killing him. So technically Shen was his own downfall. As Master Oogway said: "One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it." And that is exactly what Shen did.
just want to note that when the mast was falling on Shen, he could have easily escaped. But he accepted his fate by closing his eyes. This shows how hurt he was on the inside and how much he hated his life. A true maniac. His actions were pure and his motivations simple. In his eyes, he was gravely wronged by his loved ones. Even his evilness had a subtle purity in them. Faces death in the eye and accepts his wrongdoings. A true genius- far ahead of his time. A main who carried his pain with calm ruthlessness and swagger. Hands down the most complicated villain in the history of animation!
You can hear when it’s specifically Shen’s parts (versus the section where Po is deflecting the cannonballs for example) the music never satisfyingly steps up or down. It always drags out into something that feels unattainable, full of longing for something but unsure on how to get it and what to do. - exactly like the mindset that Shen has throughout the movie
*(Dramatically)THE CHAMELEON:* Wants to use Po's Staff to gain access to the Spirit Real to steal the Kung Fu of *EVERY* Master Villain, and destroy him.
"Its a gift, yknow a parting gift, as its going to part you, part of you there, part of you there, and part of you wayyyy over there, staining the wall!" I love that omg 🥲🫠
God, Lord Shen has possibly the most disturbing yet badass soundtrack for an animated villain. It terrifies you as it should. Also, alongside Pitch from RotG he’s my favourite Dreamworks villain
It's a Gift. It's your parting gift, in that it'll part you; part of you Here, part of you there, and part of you wayyy over there, Staining the Wall! 🦚
"Oh, you want to know so badly? Thinking knowing will heal you, huh? Fill some... crater in your soul. Well here's your answer... your parents didn't love you. But here... Let me heal you." -Lord Shen
it's ironic cuz what Shen says there is more directed to himself, especially after hearing the truth from the soothsayer about what his parents thought of him.
Kung Fu Panda 2 is my favourite movie of the trilogy, and Shen is a big reason why. Tai Lung is a good villain because he's personal to Shifu. Shen is a great villain because he's personal to Po. But Kai is just an okay villain, because he's personal to Oogway, who is already dead.
Peacocks are also a symbol for immortality. In winter they shed their beautiful feathers, making them look dark and sick: but in the spring, they grow back shinier and more beautiful than before. They look almost... reborn.
I read a very sad fact were apparently after massacring half the panda population he felt bad but knew that what he already done can not be taken back and had no other choice but to go down the path he made for himself the path of villainy
Shen is quite possibly my favourite villain just based upon how he strikes his opponents with negative emotions such as fear before enhancing his own strength with rage. It’s like a better version of Tai Lung.
Lord Shen is actually one of my favorite villains. He has that classy evil tone. His voice is actually quite calmly threatening and that is actually pretty scary 😅😂
Someone mentioned in a comment in another video perhaps, that each trilogy was of the main 3s past. Shifus past comes to haunt him in the first, Po's past in the second, and Oogways in the third. It's so cool they did that
Shen is absolutely gorgeous, both in design and character. His final moments, he's not even trying to kill po, he's basically trying to destroy everything around him while aiming mainly at po. He's gone so far down the deep end in that single moment that the only way for him to stop is to literally die right there and now. Fav DreamWorks villain, probably favourite animates villain if we don't count Davy jones and Vader as animated
before that you saw him quietly looking at the ship wrecks before he suddenly starts breathing heavily just for Po to show up. Shen was probably about to break down
I love how the soundtrack concentrates between lord shen's attitude and past because he definitely wants us to know the personality, regret and evil of this character. I literally love dreamworks movies.
he does probably dislike/regret the actions he took but he probably believes the end result will make all he has done worth it. Soothsayer mentions this wont be the case which Shen just doesn't respond to.
When Shen freed Soothsayer instead of killing her, was a moment of where you knew he felt regret but no turning back and had to try to let go of his past as he said he must "tend to the future" but hes still stuck in the past. Rewatching this like a 100 times or just too much, every time, there is always a new detail in the animation or the different sounds for the props or even the music and the lines the voice actors say, everything is just so cool
i guess he believed that by stopping all the misery he caused for nothing and that having China would make all he did worth it. Soothsayer saying the cup he chooses to fill has no bottom. I think she was half right, Shen was instead trying to get happiness through power which simply wouldn't work
Lord Shen is without a doubt the best villain in the entire Kung Fu Panda series. Tai Lung was a great villain, too, but he's just kinda forgotten about after the first movie, and is more of a power hungry villain who wants revenge on the people who, in his eyes, took away the destiny that was promised to him. Lord Shen, however, is not only powerful and cunning, bit also a threat to all of Kung Fu and China. He isn't a single threat, as he has an entity army at his side. Yes, he's power hungry, but he's stronger in terms of numbers and his main weapon. He turned what was originally supposed to be used for joy and happiness into a lethal weapon that killed even Master Rhino. I'm sure it would have been enough to kill even Tai Lung. But most importantly was his impact on the protagonist, Po. The second Shen learned of a threat to him, he retaliated by commiting mass genocide on all Pandas. This introduction to Po's past and original family feels organic because it answers the question people had in the first movie: where are the other pandas? (This was even hinted at in the first movie when Po says to Ping, "Sometimes I can't even believe you're my dad.") Throughout Kung Fu Panda 2, Shen uses Po's trauma against him. Po gets flashbacks of Shen's doings at the sight of the mark on his feathers. He had to face his traumas and find inner peace within his pain in order to defeat Shen. Shen even impacts the tribe of pandas, and especially Po's biological father, in the third movie, as there is an entire scene with Po's father talking to Po about his mother (it even includes the scene where she sacrifices herself for Po's survival. Kung Fu Panda 2 (and the series as a whole) is amazing, and anyone who has seen it as a kid should rewatch it so they can discover the masterpiece that it truly is.
Everyone seems to agree on the fact that Shen was a better villain than Kai. But hey unpopular opinion : not only is Shen a better villain, I like his theme better too. Don’t get me wrong, Kai’s theme is amazing, but idk why Shen’s theme hits a lot harder than Kai’s to me, and sounds more fitting for the character, it’s so elegant yet tortured and also deadly. I LOVE IT
I dont know why but somehow this theme terrifies me. I had a very rough childhood especially in school. And this theme although it's beautiful and epic brings up all the bad memories I have of that time. It's very bittersweet. Jeez I need fresh air now. Or else I get anxiety
Shen was honestly the first and one of the only cinematic villains to truly scare me. His malicious nature and terrifying presence struck true fear into my 5-year-old heart. Going back to rewatch this masterpiece a few years ago was a fucking blast, because this is truly one of the best animated villains ever created. (Tai Lung and Kai are great too but I just have more respect for Shen)
Shen was so close to taking over China if Po and the gang didn't stop Shen's invasion *Shen* is literally my favorite villain in Dreamworks, his story is well written
Strangely enough my favorite moment of scoring in the whole franchise is 13:25, because it kind of represents everything that Shen is at his core - desperate, unhinged, small-hearted, and tragic. This little 1 minute skirmish between Po and Shen represents so much and I love it
Lord Shen was by far the best villain in the trilogy and most certainly the most evil. The face he makes right before he blows up the ships always sends shivers down my spine really goes to show how much he's fallen from grace. really the best moment for any DreamWorks villain
Oh hey I know you I see you on ShadowDante's channel. But yeah i can see your point because 2 of the Kung Fu Panda villains are on the NPE wiki while all 3 HTTYD Villains are all on the PE wiki page. although actions do speak louder than words and by Actions Shen is definitely worse IMO
@@Samurai-es5wh yeah Shen's actions do help out his heinousness which allows him to stand out compared to Vincent, Kai and Rumplestiltskin. But the villains I think outclass Shen in terms of evilness include Gallaxhar: destroyed his entire planet and came close to destroying Earth Chef: commits mass murder on a yearly basis, uses her status as a way to hold power over everyone, and uses the trolls as drugs. Red Death: is a key factor in the human vs dragon conflict in areas close to or in Berk. General Mandible: sends hundreds of his soldiers on suicide missions and even attempted to kill off his entire colony in order to rebuild it in his image. He's essentially Hopper but without the decency to keep a promise to his deceased mother. Tzekel Kan: the embodiment of everything the conquistadors saw in the natives as he is a manipulative, sadistic, egotistical, heartless, and power hungry priest who nearly had El Dorado revealed to Hernando Cortes just out of spite for being banished. Drago Bludvist: he tried to destroy all of Berk and even admits that his motives of wanting to use dragons as a way to conquer other dragons is hypocritical and a facade that he uses in order to manipulate others. Grimmel: just think of Shen but without any redeeming qualities mixed with Hiccup's ingenuity.
I still think Drago is more evil than grimmel tho and a lot of people agree about Lord shen being the most evil. I know Schrafrillas said that Lord Shen was the most evil dreamworks villain and a lot of people agree with him on that including me.

@Cecil Abbott thanks for the great News. Im now very excited to watch the other movies, but i do Wonder. What is the other Key components to kung fu
It could be argued that Shen isn't arrogant
Arrogant is "having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities." He clearly isn't like that with his abilitys as he agreed he was no match to the Kung Fu of Master Croc, Master Ox and Master Rhino. He didn't act as if he was as important as anyone else either from what i remember

@@mikephelps5454 Yea. He couldn't find peace and that destroyed him

@Maria Samhoun i wish he just got his body messed up and covered in splinters
The subtlety that Gary brought to Shen was just breathtaking. You could tell that Shen knew what he was doing was wrong, but that it was too far gone to stop. The slight quavers in the voice, the emotion that gets quickly suppressed... just masterful voice acting.
In my personal opinion both Shen and Tai lung where not truly evil people. The only truly evil person in this trilogy was Kai
Fun fact about Shen’s design, specifically his colors-
White symbolizes death (but also innocence) and is associated with the element of metal and the rooster, another colorful and aggressive avian. Black is a color that is associated with evil and sadness. Red is associated with fire, which is what Shen’s weapons use to wreak their havoc.
The writers and the artists really put a lot of time into Shen, and Oldman obviously had a ball voicing him. Nice job, Dreamworks

Cody Bender you should. Shen may have been dangerous and heartless, but deep down inside that monster is a peacock that is blinded by his ambitions.
He thought his parents hated him because they banished him
They only did that because they loved him and wanted him to become redeemable which ended up killing them
Just Like Tai Lung and Kai.
Shen is a sociopath and fight for kill while the other villain from kung fu panda fight for their pride. Thats why Shen is scary and intimidating
Kung Fu Panda 2 was a dark one. Especially when Po find out the fate of his parents. (his mother in particular)

I'm so glad they didn't "redeem" him at the end. Shen was a fantastic villain, and his entire character would have been totally undermined in an unrealistic and unsatisfying way if he'd accepted Po's offer of mercy.
Easily one of my favorite villains in film history.
Dying was like redeeming himself somehow, accepting his failure and paying with his own life.
Just wish he had more screen time ;)
So sad seeing everything this character was being forgotten in the new movie
the first villain not to underestimate their nemesis... i salute you, my good sir for actually planning ahead
If anything Shen vastly overestimated the pandas at first, he massacred them out of perceived self-defense
I mean, he literally brought a cannon to a fistfight.
He actually acknowledged his enemies strength and knew his own limits. That makes him so much better than most animation villains.
And yet, just like the rest of the villains, he failed in front of Po's true super power: Plot Armour.

Thinking, “well we had Tai Lung who was a physical impressive villain but had no real connection to the protagonist until the ending, so what if the next villain is someone who isn’t as physically intimidating but makes up for that vulnerability by having a great influence and intellect to create weapons of war while also having an emotional connection to Po and his past.”
What a great team to give such a great villain.
I simply agree with you. They might have been thinking some "what-if" questions while they were making him. That's what I would do for my stories.
*Tai-Lung has no connection to Po*
*Kai has no connection to Po other than Po literally only knowing Oogway*
*Shen literally gave Po PTSD and Po can’t even remember why*

Thai lung was so fucking weak as a villain
I think what made Kai a weak villain for me is that the moral of his story was essentially the same as Shen’s: the more you take, the less you have. Both were ravenous warlords trying to fill some void with power.
What made Tai Lung different was that he wasn’t motivated by power per se, but instead was driven by a noble ambition (become the greatest Kung fu practitioner) that became poisoned by vengefulness. And Shen of course was unique because he was the first power/destruction driven villain in the series.
I think Kai just has too weak of a characterization. All he is is just an angry bull who is still mad at Oogway over his defeat 500 years ago.
In 2 inner peace was an exalted state that could be argued just as much within the user as in usage of soul jucii or whatever.
while true Shen and Po's conflict was of the mind, while Kai and Po's was of the spirit

Shen did had a class, remained sophisticated till end

Shen was the best villain tai lung was the most badass
The reasoning why Kai was shit was because apparently 2 was "Too Dark" so they had to make 3 more kid friendly
I love Kai purely because of the potential for his character. They could have done so much with him, and the proof of that ability is through how amazing Shen was. They peaked at creating Shen. I was actually kind of insulted at what they did with Kai, especially with the overly comical final fight.
Well Kai would have been awesome if it werent for some shitty parents saying that shen was too dark for children
It's a shame that Disney can't make a villain like him in their own animated movies

So technically Shen was his own downfall.

just want to note that when the mast was falling on Shen, he could have easily escaped.
Even his jokes are dark and show his inner mental turmoil.

You can hear when it’s specifically Shen’s parts (versus the section where Po is deflecting the cannonballs for example) the music never satisfyingly steps up or down.

It’s like a better version of Tai Lung.
Lord Shen has got to be the most beautiful looking yet deadly villain of any animated movie.
Dreamworks just never disappoints when it comes to villain entries.
(This was even hinted at in the first movie when Po says to Ping, "Sometimes I can't even believe you're my dad.")
Throughout Kung Fu Panda 2, Shen uses Po's trauma against him.
2020 seems to be the year of the peacock!

I would say the song screams how desperate and relentless Shen was in his final moments against Po
Lord Shen was by far the best villain in the trilogy and most certainly the most evil. The face he makes right before he blows up the ships always sends shivers down my spine really goes to show how much he's fallen from grace. really the best moment for any DreamWorks villain
I'd say Kai comes pretty close to Shen though, and although he is pretty evil I'd still say all 3 How to Train Your Dragon villains are worse.
But the villains I think outclass Shen in terms of evilness include
Gallaxhar: destroyed his entire planet and came close to destroying Earth
Chef: commits mass murder on a yearly basis, uses her status as a way to hold power over everyone, and uses the trolls as drugs.
