- In this video, I tell you who has the right of way at a 4 way stop. Often times, I see people very confused at 4 way stops! There are a few cars telling each other to go, but nobody really knows who has the right of way. There are 3 situations that you can be in when you approach a 4 way stop, and I explain how to handle each of them!

I've been feeling a bit off about approaching 4-way stops recently. This definitely cleared it up for me and put the knowledge I already know in perspective!

No one mentions when everyone arrives at similar times but you can’t remember who got there 1st, 2nd, 3rd and etc. it’s so stressfullll
That's why you have to watch their lights which indicates what direction they're going

I don't trust FIFO at 4 way stops. I rather have everybody yield to the right. That way you know when it's your turn to perceed
The person that ran the stop sign clearly didnt see it because the bus was blocking view of the sign. The city might want to think about how visible signs are when buses are at the intersection.
Maybe,but do you think is"normal" drive through an intersection just like that without looking? Even if there's no stop sign?

That is even an unacceptable excuse. That topic is taught in so many defensive driving classes or online Free videos. They teach you how to manage that kind of
" hazards" when driving. That person is a stop sign runner. Might have not been paying any attention or was distracted.

@@David-zp4cw impossible one stop to much time it only 2 second to 1 second if. there are 4 there the same time is . 'cause someone arrive slow and stay there if this is the case the slow car even for half second must give the right.

@@sophiawilkins613 Most European countries, aswell as the UK, use Yield/Give Way signs instead of STOP signs, and the crash rate is in fact lower.

At my son's school intersection there is a four way stop, and it is always crowded in all directions during drop off and pick up times. Also, there is a crossing guard. In Florida other traffic can proceed if they aren't crossing the road the guard is blocking for pedestrians. Not everyone in Florida is aware of this, and often all traffic just stops and waits for the kids to cross no matter which direction they intend to go.
So there are a bunch of tie situations, and situations where at least one car cannot proceed because they are being held up by the crossing guard.
I would love a video like you have produced here, but at a busy 4-way stop near a school with a crossing guard. This is probably the most complex scenario we will encounter, and child safety is also a real factor.
Most four way stops are simple. But this one scenario gets many of us confused, including myself at times. Would love your feedback or even a video narrating that scenario.
I always find this step of driving to not only be the most difficult step for me to do but kind of scary too. Its like an accident waiting to happen as you have so many people that don't do a full stop like they are supposed to when they come at intersection with no traffic lights. You even have ones that appear like they are in such a rush that if you don't make the turn fast enough they will just take your turn altogether and go before you. Here I am like trying to go through without getting in any type of collusion and they are in their cars likely fuming with impatience because I'm going to slow. I dont believe in just shooting right off at a stop but easing my way through a little first then picking up more acceleration. Like I said someone will likely not obey when they are supposed to stop, and so when you're about to go, it would be very benefiting to be able to break instantly before an accident happens.

There's a 4 way stop that was put in just by my house, it was put there because it's a back road that comes down from the side/back of a supermarket and people were flying by (speed limit is 25 on residential streets.) Pretty much every damn day I have one of two things happen, people ignore the stop sign all together and/or end up stopping in the middle of the intersection because they're going too fast, or sometimes I pull up to the sign as the same time as them (coming from the supermarket, they're on the left and I'm on the right so it's always my right of way) and they try and cut in front of me.
I love how no one is actually stopping lol
Why do so many people thing they can turn left in front of a person going straight through the intersection? So much road rage comes from this and lots of bad accidents.

how can u tell if the streets to your right and your left has a stop sign. or yeld or priority, in general? u can see your sign, and the sign from oposite way of you from the shape i asume, but what about the ones from the right and left?

Who ever is either stoped or stops first goes. Then so on so forth and it’s always the one on your right. If you all stop witch is not really common but happens if you all stop at the exact same time well then someone has to kinda inch out to start the chain reaction. But just remember as you are pulling up look who’s stoped already and then judge if you are going to stop first or the next guy and go from there.
Looking at this from the street. I feel like if you approach the 4 way, as long as you stay true to what’s right as you stop. it will keep everything fine for you to complete that intersection.
But what if the roads have multiple lanes? How would it work then? My city is full of such roads and I can't seem to grasp the pattern in which cars give right of way 💔
What if we stopped first and both wanna take turn the same way, who should go first? I world let them go if not emergency....

When you come to a four-way or three-way stop, the right-of-way rules are slightly different.[14] Drivers should proceed through the intersection in the order in which they arrive at the stop (regardless of which direction they are moving in), making sure to yield to any pedestrians first. If two cars come to the intersection at the same time, The car to the right has the right of way."
If you get their first you go, doesn't matter the direct you are moving in. According to Ohio driving laws. Im not sure which state this video is for. Each state is different.
Situation number 2 opposing but lets just say im at a street light and want to turn left and the cars are going straight, do i yield to everyone ? When can i enter the intersection?

I have three observations: 1. No one on that cross street is coming to a stop!; 2. I can't see any stop-signs on the cross street, though I'm sure they are there, & 3. In my area, for some unfathomable reason, when two people approach a 4-way stop opposite each other with one turning left - everyone thinks the left turner has the right-of-way. I know the rules and the reasons for them, but it is taking a risk to go straight through when the turning car will swing out in front of you and then use their horn or one of their fingers to convey their displeasure of you taking your/"their" right-of-way.

@@jasper8961 exactly. If you aren’t crossing each other’s paths, you can both go at the same time.
When I am unsure of who arrived first I just let the car go first (signaling with the hand). Then I always study the car and person, because like we saw in the view sometimes they just drive off without stopping or they just momentarily stop and then drive. Dangerous.

I think the person that ran the stop sign probably didn’t see the stop sign because of that bus but still should not have proceeded through that intersection without making sure it was clear even if there are no stop signs. at a four-way intersection with no stop signs still need to look both ways before crossing the street. I’m actually watching this knowing all this before hand how to use a four-way stop but just a few minutes ago I was at a four way stop at the same time as someone to my left and we both proceeded into the intersection at the same time that person on my left had to stop or hit me and then acted like I did something wrong. any time two cars show up four-way stop the one to the right house the right.
I thought it was the first to stop. So if" you" stop you will not have to wait for anyone because no one else stops.
I would just stop totally and go because if you stop and are the only one you get to go first.😊

I didn't like that the one driver ran the stop sign. I don't ever run stop signs regardless if I am in a hurry or not
