  • Fox Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt explains why the upcoming Spring Transfer Portal has college football coaches around the country in a panic. He details why the lack of guidelines around transfers has caused this Portal window to become a leverage point for players. Klatt lays out his solutions to solve this unsustainable model for the good of the sport, its programs and its players. Joel then recaps his time at Ohio State this past week, including the buzz surrounding #1 overall recruit WR Jeremiah Smith. He also gives his takeaways from the Spring Game on FOX and his early thoughts on the Buckeyes in 2024. Klatt wraps up the podcast by answering mailbag questions including the story of when he and Dan Orlovsky faced off on the baseball diamond while at Detroit Lions training camp.

    i think this is easy to solve. make a rule that if you engage in NIL, it’s a contract. 2 year minimum. if you sign, you stay at LEAST 2 years.. Or split the payments up over 3 years. You get 1 maybe 2 NIL deals.

    • @natestyron4830
      @natestyron4830 Месяц назад +1

      If you're talking about players taking money from the school's collective (which is not Name Image or Likeness), I agree on making players sign a contract. If talking NIL, a contract signed with a business (Nike, local car company), strong disagree on tying NIL money to a requirement to stay at a specific school. That agreement has very little to do with the school. The exception would be if the NIL deal is actually with the school (a percentage of the jersey sales at the school bookstore).

      @@natestyron4830 A collective is NIL, its random people with ties to a school wether new a fan or a alum paying to see a certain player play for their team just how a brand would pay that athlete to untie their fans to buy that product. The only way this would be remotely legal is if the players were payed by the school and in tail the conference and NCAA.

    Definitely good on schools like Ohio state getting the spring game done. That way they really have more time for players that do transfer out to possibly pick up someone else who probably hasn’t even done their spring game. This whole thing is relatively new. At some point, players are going to realize transferring in and of itself isn’t the best thing for their careers, and/or the people who fund NIL are going to see acquiring transfers in and of itself isn’t that beneficial.
    But for now, players and the financial movers n shakers are still experimenting. Obviously the NCAA is a massive joke and that doesn’t help anything either. Maybe they’re hoping someone else advocates for more controls so they can regulate without looking like the bad guys, but I doubt it

      The football and basketball players in each conference should create their own separate player unions for each revenue generating sport, so they can negotiate for their player's fair share of what they generate. Then the conferences can pay all their players the same base pay, to bypass Title IX , for the regular season, with bonuses for years in the program and championship/bowl/playoff games. The star players would still be allowed to receive NIL in the form of endorsement deals.

    Transfer Portal is essentially Free Agency. NFL doesn’t allow free agency but once per year. The same should be the same in college. In fact, colleges should be allowed to require a NIL contract be signed by the player for multiple years for the money a player receives, which would prevent them transferring out during the contract.

  • @nyc1ts932
    @nyc1ts932 Месяц назад

    Thing about collective bargaining: right now the schools are not aligned in the same way as the NFL/pro sports leagues are. So for example revenue sharing - teams are already hopping conferences to gain a share of a larger revenue pie. So until the suits at the top of the conferences are willing to agree to play nice in their own sandbox, and sacrifice their own money for a more stable landscape, you can’t ask the players to do it.
    Until then, you end up in a world where the “players share of revenue” in the SEC is more appealing than the BigXII for example.
    And don’t let the TV/media fool you - they’re making money hand over fist off these kids too. They will likely push back on having to “pay more to offset” their part.
    Tl;dr the suits are a bigger problem than the kids.

      The disparity between spending on coaching staffs and facilities went unabated so I doubt the schools who are privileged by NIL would just willingly accept caps on NIL.

    I agree with the 2 transfer opportunities but I also think if a coach is fired or leaves then the players should have an opportunity to also leave as well. It’s not fair a coach recruits these players & leaves. Now all of a sudden this new coach completely changes scheme & the only reason he doesn’t want the players to leave is because they might go to the competition but had no plan on using them is not fair. Also a union might not be fair as well. Most college kids are out in 3 years. By the time they really understand the college politics they’re graduated or left. What power do they actually have? Can they strike? One season missed by college students is career altering (maybe they get it back like the COVID year but that is a dilemma in itself). Also a huge problem are decisions made by 18 year olds now will impact college students for generations. As a former 18 year old who made horrible financial decisions ie college loans. I just don’t think sound judgment is always there at that age.

    The problem with restricting movement is that it is always one sided. You are not even hinting at restricting movement of coaches from ping ponging across the country. Players in college are never there very long to start with and coaches are paid like and treated as the indispensable part of the winning equation that will define a university’s success. Under contract coaches leverage leaving for more money every year but players must be restricted from moving limiting their negotiating position?
