For sure man. Just this week I had the same thing happen. Got a super nice bass, but it was the only fish of the day. However worthwhile to get out there
It’s decent fishing most of the year. It’s been years since I’ve been there so I’m kinda forgetting when the best seasons are. Call Duranglers they would know more than me
Headed that way in a month (Durango) thanks for the great info! I got tired of leaving stuff and forgetting stuff about 15/20 years ago.. lost something I set down to less honest people I saw fishing the next pool. Was really upset. Glad yours didn't walk off!! Anyway, I moved to a fishing backpack set up...I have it all with me, never lose a thing anymore! (Moved to short rod tubes 100% in all rod weights) Even carry a tenkara setup along with my 2 fly rods, and even a tiny collapsible spinning rod. I am used to having all my water, snacks, and extra options with me.. I even fish with it in the middle of summer in the south. I have a couple pouches on my wading belt for high use items and the "fly box of the day." (Contents changed out as needed) Thanks again for your video...I'm subscribed. I think your honesty is great! And hey...somedays it all works out in the end!
I live near Bayfield and fish through here all the time. Also the Piedra at HWY 160 heading north and east fork of the San Juan along CR 667. My favorite is the Piedra though and only 15 min from home. Also the Piedra south of 160 is nice but you have to get a permit through the Ute tribe. Only like $50 for the year. Do you still fish the Animas?
@@McFlyAngler I'm working my way through them lol. I'm actually going to check out Twin Spruce near Delores tomorrow after seeing your video. Never been so should be fun.
Awesome man! Yeah Dolores has some great fishing! This is a good time to fish the river also! Lots of great nymphing there for some bows and browns. Good sized fish as well!
@@McFlyAnglerUnfortunately the Twin Spruce lakes are closed down. Delores river was nice though. Several small browns. Also hit up Summit reservoir and had fun catching tiny smallmouth. Really tiny - a few inches lol. Bummer about the Twin Spruce ponds after seeing the browns you caught. They're mostly dried up and it's all posted as private property now.
Are you sure your going to the same place? I was just there last year... it’s a state park, should not be private. I don’t think they are called twin lakes. It has like 7 different little lakes in a row. It’s on the right side of the road as you go north from Dolores, maybe 8-10 miles down.
Great Job! When fishing them murky waters, look for the seems where the murk meets the clearer water. Usually that is where the fish will be hanging, using the murk for cover while being able to see into the clearer water..also, try fishing from down stream, casting up river from your stance, just my .02.. tight lines!!
I know the scene all to well. My favorite water in Catskill NY is always like that. There is a portal that feeds from a reservoir cold water feeding to another reservoir down stream, the bank collapsed and turned the water like thick chocolate milk over ten years ago, silted it horribly . Is still effected to this day. On the heavy colored days only chance to catch anything is to find the clearer seam(not clear just more clear than the rest) and use light colored nymph, streamer. What exactly was it that was spilled into the Animas river?
The stretch I was fishing didnt really have much clear towards the end of the day. There were some clear sections in the beginning. But as the day progressed it was chocolate everywhere I could find. I walked 7 miles down the river and back, after about 11:00, I didnt see anything clear. I was looking... The spill were of heavy metals like Lead and Arsnic... There was an old abandoned mine up about 50 miles north of Durango that the EPA was trying to "clean" and somehow they dumbed millions of gallons of stagnant water that was sitting in the mine (full of these metals). The water turned copper color for about a week. This though was 3 years ago, and not the cause of the off color water. Its usually crystal clear in the summer/fall. But during the winter/early spring, the snow runoff muds up the water. Thats why the later parts of the day (when it warmed up) it turned chocolately.
Gotcha. That's a long walk! Why didn't you just head to another body of water? Even if it was an hour away. Seems would have been a better bet. Colorado has good fishing water abundantly, yeah? Amazing, the EPA isn't held liable for anything they do.
Well, for my channel I feel I need to catch a fish at a specific river I fish before I can go to another river. This was the 3rd part of my Animas venture, this is why I was like "finally on this river" cause I really wanted to go to another river soon after. Unfortunately, most of the rivers are iced over or not really great fishing this time of year. By the time I walked most of the river, it was too late to move anyway. Either way, Im really glad I didnt go to another river or I would have missed this big fella... Much further north (towards Silverton) has a rough drive during the winter. Towards Cortez, there is a river called Dolores river, and that is semi fishable in the winter, but still, about a 1.5 hour drive. Also it could as well been blown out as well. There was a decent sized snow storm the week before this trip, and it started warming up that day which caused lots of runoff, more so than normal... I wasn't sure what was working... There is a small river close by called the Los Pinos river. It runs through Bayfield. That is about a half hour drive roughly and that I hear isn't doing so well right now, but I might try to hit that up soon for the channel. I really want to start hitting up new rivers for the channel besides just the Juan and Animas. I plan on hitting up the Chalma (which is good in the winter) its about 2 hour drive south of me in NM. The Rio Grand is also good in the winter and the best fishing section is about 2-3 hours... I plan on expanding further and further as the weather allows. In the spring, I really want to do some backpacking trips where I spend the night after long hikes to remote streams up in CO. The video's will be of both backpacking, setting up camp, and fishing in the mornings. Will make for a good video for sure. I do have big plans for my channel, but the weather isn't really permitting right now. I started the fly fishing part of my channel a bit late to do all that fun stuff. But come this spring/summer, it will become a fun and adventurous channel. HAHA For now, you might need to watch me on the San Juan a few more times. ;) LOL
Yeah its making comeback. Its not as good as it was though, but the fish are healthy, and starting to be more plentiful. However, its still a tough river to fish, and I usually catch about one decent fish per 3-4 trips.
Beauty McFly!! You done it! It's all about confidence and technique and confidence is 90%. Figure there are 2-3 thousand fish per mile in that River. They're in there ya just gotta work for em. BTW use a ruler to measure your hand span from tip of thumb to tip of pinkie. Mines 9 1/4" makes a good makeshift ruler. I guessed that wild brute to be 22" +/- 1". Well done Angler!
Thanks my friend! :) So I thought 22-24 however, I'm quite positive he was actually more around 24". I wasn't holding him out from my body much, but I measured my net, and his tail was sticking fully out the top of the net with the head almost touching the other side. I measured that same amount when I got home and it was in the 24" range. But, again, give or take a few I'm sure.. Either way, I'm happy with 22... HAHA

+Michelle O'Kane there really aren't exits on the roads here, small town, just roads... stop in at duranglers (local fly shop) just look them up to get directions, and they will tell you where to go. It changes through the year, and even day to day. So that's your best bet for some great info on what to do that specific day.
Yeah I’d say for me it is... you can use it, but the fish won’t pull enough for it to be fun... I use a 10’ 3wt this time of year, but it’s underpowered for the larger fish. A 5wt is just perfect...
13:23 - what was that? Looks like you even looked over at it. Anyways this is one of my favorite stretches on the Animas. +Michelle O'Kane there really aren't exits on the roads here, small town, just roads... stop in at duranglers (local fly shop) just look them up to get directions, and they will tell you where to go. It changes through the year, and even day to day. So that's your best bet for some great info on what to do that specific day.
Thank you!
Maybe we'll see you on the river.
Yeah that would be cool, say hi if you see me.
heading to durango in a month, any pointers for me il be bringing an 8wt is that too much for up there?
Yeah I’d say for me it is... you can use it, but the fish won’t pull enough for it to be fun... I use a 10’ 3wt this time of year, but it’s underpowered for the larger fish. A 5wt is just perfect...
cool thanks il see what i can do.
let me know how it does for you! :)
il be on the look out for a 5 wt or borrow a buddys for the trip.
Great video and fish. What was the streamer you where using? You just said olive. Great job
+Jessica Haydahl slump buster... thank you
I fished that river for about 2 weeks down by Aztec I couldn’t catch anything
Yeah, too far down. Also recently this river took a hit with the ash. Killed off a bunch of fish since the video was made.
You said you have been fishing 3 times, now you're buying your license? Lol ,Pappy the trout bum.
HAHAHAHAHA It was a new year bro... Don't always think the worst of people.
Nice brownie dude I say he's about five pounds
Thanks! And honestly I never know weight on these, just length. Lol. I think he was 23-24”...
13:23 - what was that? Looks like you even looked over at it. Anyways this is one of my favorite stretches on the Animas. I thought you might like to know that a really nice Tiger trout was recently caught in the Animas near here. I think that's excellent news for the Animas given it's situation. www.reddit.com/r/flyfishinginCO/comments/f1uncs/look_what_i_found_in_the_animas_river_tigers_in/?
EDIT: NM, I think I figured it out. Your second rod fell lol. Still check out the Animas tiger! Such a nice fish!
What did I look over? Sorry.... I haven't put this video out in a long time and forgot
@@McFlyAngler I figured it out lol. Looks like your second rod was with the camera and fell over somehow. At first I thought a Durango vagrant living by the river was messing with your camera😂
Wow.
22,23,24.lol
More like 19 or 20".
Still good brown.
Sucks u did not catch more.
Least u did not get skunked.
Well, I measured him on my net, then went home and measured that spot, turns out I was right, he was 23" roughly. Glad you liked the video, and yeah that river has skunked me many times, good this trip it threw me a bone.
