CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Devon (Nick Cannon) battles it out with Sean (Leonard Roberts) for best drummer in the band.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Drumline brings the world of "show-style" marching bands (popular at traditionally black, Southern colleges) to the big screen for the first time. The story, by Shawn Schepps, was inspired by the high school drumline experiences of executive producer/executive music producer Dallas Austin. Devon (Nick Cannon of Nickelodeon's The Nick Cannon Show) is a Harlem drummer who earns a full scholarship to the fictional Atlanta A&T University. There, his talent gets the attention of the school's embattled musical director, Dr. Lee (Orlando Jones), who puts his students' education and appreciation for musical tradition ahead of the marching band's popularity. Devon's brashly egotistical attitude doesn't endear him to Lee, whose slogan for the band is "One band, one sound," or to the drumline's disciplined captain, Sean (Leonard Roberts, late of TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Devon has more success with the dance captain of the marching band, Laila (Zoe Saldana, who played a ballet dancer in Center Stage), a Southern belle who's won over by Devon's confidence. Sean feels threatened by Devon's talent, and his attitude, so when he learns that Devon can't read music, he uses the information to his advantage. With the band facing their archrival at a huge marching band competition, Dr. Lee has to decide whether to allow the brilliant drummer to perform, despite his attitude. Devon has to prove that he can show his skills while still being part of the team. Drumline was directed by Charles Stone III (Paid in Full), and features cameo appearances by musical artists Blu Cantrell and Petey Pablo.

If the line I’m in ever looked this bad we would be shut down in an instant
Dr. Lee like "you better not do a solo."
😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Then he does a solo.
Hahahaha
Dr lee should be glad that he got 2 badass drummers smh
I started playing the drums because of this movie. Moved on to guitar/piano, then sang/wrote songs for a few years. I look back and realize how big of an impact this had on me. Truly a classic..
😂😂😂 me too and i still play drums like a 3 year old lol
same
wow...this movie means a lot to you...change your life
@@fizahanif 🤡
Not quite my tempo.
Tries that at practice, gets kicked off the drum line
Pine To The Cone fr tho
Pine To The Cone drum AT&T
wanya wanya A&T
that's because you are not a loose nick cannon ;)
Pine To The Cone 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I used to think this was the sickest thing ever. Then I joined my high school marching band.
😂😂😂 drumline amd marching band are two different things man😂😂 drumline at my school lit af 👌
Hi How are you drumlines are meant to be a part of a marching band, what tf do you mean they're different
Jacob Bush I was in the marching band in high school myself and I think what he means is after the marching season the drum line has its own performance season where they do performances without the rest of the band. I remember going to some of the competitions in the winter
Ryan Wiuff Thank you almost exactly what i meant but our drumline int apart of the band at all
You're lucky... I wasn't fortunate enough to enroll in a high school with a decent marching band... my high school was a 3A class school & my graduating class had 99 members total... so there wasn't a lot of funding available for the music program, so we were stuck with decade-old marching equipment and a single head band director and a single assistant... that translated into literally zero effort being put into coaching the drumline. Everything we did I had to do myself as drum captain, including any drumline features at pep rallies or other events, & writing all the drum cadences myself... like I said, count yourself lucky. There's a lot of kids living in rural areas who never get the opportunity to be a part of a well-developed marching band, no matter the desire, or skill, or work ethic they put in...
Devon took it extra by stepping in front of him and going down to one knee to show off and keep the attention on him knowing the rest of the band would step up lean over and join the solo artist to finish together 😂 Also threw in his own freestyle solo at the end
Right lol Sean told him to take the lead not be a cocky kid lol he got way too big headed
REALLY WOW thanks captain obvious we would have NEVERRRR figured that out
@@josaidso8438 Your welcome glad I could help people like you that missed it
Best scene in the movie. I played this shit on the snare from middle school all the way through college.
Yo Jamal! Dont sing it, Bring it!! Put it on RUclips so we ALL can see you do it. Lol
we support you. get on it! >
Jamal Thomas p
Jett Blacc classic man , if u were in middle school when this movie came out and u were a drummer u were memorizing every cadence
3 years later and still no video.. lmao Geez, i hate trolls
As a teenager I thought “maybe when I’m older I’ll understand why dr. Lee is so mad”. At 34 I still feel like he’s a hater
He's mad cuz he told that fool to stay in his place and he rebelled anyway
Band is not about one person. Its about a team. U want to be a star then join boxing. All sports even band are a team effort. U want to be solo then be in boxing
Hahahhahhajaha
One Band, One Sound 😂
Devon was hardheaded and he wanted it too be about him. I watched it last night lol
The one thing I didn’t catch as a kid about this scene is when he was challenged to take the solo he wasn’t scared of the moment he couldn’t read music and didn’t know the solo part until it was showed to him if you noticed he watched him play the cadence one time through before he stepped up
Lol damn thanks for pointing that out because I didn't think about that
Oh ok I didn’t catch that either
this definitely made the scene better lol
He had already heard the solo at practice.
Thanks for pointing that out 😮
If your deep into music... this movie is a brilliant masterpiece, especially this scene!!!💯
....wut? as someone "deep" into music, I couldn't disagree more. He not only froze up here, after his ego got him the solo, he didn't deliver. Not until his ego was on the line. Then he decided to join in. Then he does an impromptu solo...TF? That's just stupid. It's a movie about a hot head drummer who has a problem with authority and thinks he always knows best. It's that same attitude that drove him to not be able to read music.
@@DavidAnthonyFlores It was just my opinion man, thats all.... and if you believe your opinion MATTERS, well good for you
@@jeremymagee2650 I mean, he has somewhat of a point
@@doctorwhofan-if7vx Still my opinion man, so kick rocks with loser guy
I totally agree with you on this one it's really amazing 💯💯💯
With each beat you can just feel that band director's blood pressure rising...
Orlando Jones was SO GOOD in this! His face here is priceless. Subtle but withering.
Devon was so disrespectful, Sean gave him a chance to go up and do his solo but he didn’t go up. What was the point of waiting for Sean to go up and then for you to go in front of him like that like what.
Devon couldn't read sheet music so he waited to see how the solo went, memorized it, and took off
To say "I'm better." And it's true.
Cause he can’t read music and has photographic memory
No.... the scene was showing that initially he was shook in front the audience.... and section leader knew that would humble him.... but Devon couldn't allow him self to be a punk especially knowing he was told he could so in the scene he got over the fear and proved to section leader im better than you.... the scene was supposed to show a range of emotion
@@MrSugardove no he literally couldn’t read music so he let Sean go up there so he could memorize the solo
he’s actually so talented though.... he memorized that shit so quick
Its pretty easy oncce you have an ear for music
Yeah he did.
but his attitude really stinks
The music is not really that hard. It's high school level
@@opteezy5622 right.
That step in front of his leader, into the position of maximum vulnerability, gives me chills every time
Why is it such a powerful scene i get chills every time lol
Who saw the Tik Tok about work emails ?? 😭
It was intense 😩😂😂
BRUH! 🙆🏾♂️
Me!!!!
That’s why I’m here 😂😂
You gta give to the work emails tik tok tho it was well done
Once he got the solo cadence down then joined him I get chills everytime
took me this comment to connect the dots that he couldn't read that music
Correct. I had to watch the movie again to understand….Devon wasn’t scared to do the solo. He simply didn’t know how to play it due to his inability when it comes to reading music. He needed Shawn to do it first so that he can get it down pat (the same way he learned to play King Tut in practice). His ability to learn that fast visually was a special gift.
@@likewizethasphittah I thought that was made clear when they showed him watching Sean in slow motion. He could only copy what someone else did before him, he could not do it first because he could not read the music.
@@danielorr7124 You are absolutely correct💯I guess from my perspective, most people who I know watched the movie thought he was nervous and had to get his confidence up to step out there to do the solo. I thought the same way until I watched it a few times.
@@likewizethasphittahit’s actually said in the movie later on that he can’t read music.
The music when he steps up gives me chills everytime lol idk y
Same. It's intense
The music with Dr. Lee face expression was sick af 🔥🔥I definitely agree
We need more black productions with heart like this. Not the crime and ghetto drama flicks.
I agree I am so tired of the media production of gang shows/over sexualization - why can't we have clean entertainment 😊
I've never seen an Orlando Jones character look so pissed lol
He played Dr. Lee to perfection.
Watch his scenes in American Gods
Especially after seeing him on Nick Cannon's Wyld N Out.
They don't make quality movies like this anymore🤦🏾♀️
The best acting Nick Cannon ever did in all his career..
Love don’t cost a thing
1:11 - What we’re all here for.
Only for tik-tok fans. The OGs like the whole clip
BRO I WAS LITERALLY TRYING TO FIND SOMEONE SAY THAT
The scene is less than 3 min we patient enough
If I did that during a performance or any time in my drumline I would be kicked off.
I would do it
Do it
Daniela Chaudhary Fiore Lmao my band director doesnt care if you marched with the best drumline of all time scv and got a perfect score. You act stupid you get cut

Love how they were using match grip when they started the roll and then all of a sudden they switched to tradition al grip without stopping. Hahaha
Thomas Dixon lmao at 1:45 you can see the captain switch between grips over nicks right shoulder.
Ok but what does that mean... in English?

*Captain America, pointing excitedly*
I understood that reference!
This movie got me started playing snare drum and joined drumline
Be honest. I know everybody that plays the drums has thought about doing this at least once in their life😂
Yup this is what our intrusive thoughts look like😂
My fiance played in this movie when he was in college. I'm so proud because this movie is a classic, loved this movie. He also told me that nick and the other main character didn't know how to play the drums so they had people fill in for them. Remember people its just a movie and they can, cut, edit etc. 😂😂 yup yup
I’m dead af bruh 😭 when he got in front I was rolling
Bruh 😂😂😂😂
Who’s here after the “arguing with your girl through text” tik tok?
Lmaooo bro yeah

Nah someone link it, please?
it was the emails at work tik tok for me lol
Devon was doing what Sean told him to do. Taking his solo
They both shouldn’t did that. It a team effort we shouldn’t think we better then other…
This movie was based on North Carolina A&T State Universitys drumline. In the 90s they were the band in the land. We use to buy tickets to the football game just to see the drumline and the step show. Their step shows were pretty awesome too. We would hurry up and get tickets because they would sell out so fast.
And to know that T.I. was supposed to play this role is ridiculous 😂😂
That would not have been a good fit at all. There is no better Devon Miles than Nick Cannon
One of my favorite drum scenes 1:15 is just perfect.
I never knew nick was sick, my prayers up for him. Don’t leave us too soon 🙏🏽
i really just spent like 30 minutes looking for this and im glad i found it
f to those who could not find it 😔
I almost gave up
Almost two decades ago, tiktok brought back memories of the best marching band Instrumental ever!!
This movie made me want to go to college
1:30 is when the shit is going crazy
How he spittin bars and not even talking 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This movie motivated me at 12 to get on my high schools drumline, played snare 3 out of 4 years.
crazy how he did devon sean’s solo in less than a minute and add a little spice to it that boy was so talented
Orlando jones should’ve been nominated for atleast a bet award for his performance. I really feared for nicks life a few times.
Oddly enough the line is more together in this scene than ANY of the scenes in the final drum battle.
Yup. Drives me nuts lol
I loved this movie! So fantastic! These kids were amazing!
1:43. Did he switch from match to traditional grip..ahhh the art of movie magic😂
bruh 💀
No, at 1:45 you can see his stick twirl back to matched grip over nicks shoulder.
Ahh if marching band and drum line was really like this
some _weird_gamer ever been to an HBCU?
It has been a very long time since I've seen this movie! Classic!
I thought the drumline name was AT&T then i got wifi for the first time
Hahaha! How does WiFi have to do with the team's name?
Proof that nick is a God! At 1:45 they are doing match grip and on the same roll he switches to traditional instantly!
Dude, totally obvious use of double, other wise they'd have shown both his hands and face at the same time -_-
1:07 the argument fast typing meme sound effect
My favorite scene in the movie. I can definitely imagine a whole generation of kids joining band in highschool or learning drums just because of this movie.
Watched this when I was little, here I am my senior year in my 4th year of band and marching 4th bass drum
Back in my days, my teacher will go to the library and rent us a TV to watch this movie in class and she was will wheel out a huge TV. She regret it for the next few weeks because we using anything straight into drum sticks and banging on our tables.
Here before anyone says “who saw this on tiktok” lol
Bruh dude had me weak wen doin Dr Lee 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
A whole generation that didn't see Drumline smh lol
That video had me weak AF 😂😂😂😂 dude had it down packed. Including Nick cannons facial expressions. Namely the lips poked out lmaaaaaaoooooooo
@@NoAliasisneeded I swear to god 😂😂😂😂😂
I loved the TT version!
Everytime I watch this it gives me chills
Still one of the greatest moments on a film
This movie had such a impact on people becoming interested in drums back then.Everybody wanted to be the next nick cannon in school.
Nick's improv solo at the end was sick
I love how they wrote it so that when Nick comes up the first guy just lets him be disrespectful instead escalating.
My son said… if you will watch that movie 27 time- I gonna kill you. Lol. LOVE that movie
This movie and Sheila E are what made me get on that snare drum, i had to play snare to get to quads. This came out when I was the 5th grade. Damn I'm old. 31 now lol
The sound in this movie is crazy amazing .
OMG!!! When he took center stage and the band move up to fill in the Gap… it was so beautiful!!!!
They needa make more movies like this man
It's Battle of the Bands time across the country now in November! Here in New Orleans- we have Southern vs Grambling universities. It's like the movie Drumline! 🎶
Coach got mad
When I was little I thought this was so technical.
Then I actually learned to play drums and its literally as easy as stuff I played in high school
My favorite scene in the whole movie is the 4 stroke beatoff at Falcon Carwash. They keep is O.S. love it
The sheer amount of bass drums in this video is enough to kill a man
I cant get over this movie, thank you Tiktok
The fact that this is Southwest Dekalb High still sets me off with how good it is, absolute legends.
My favorite scene
1:00 When the horns come in I start sweating and goosebumps pop out.. just a bodily reaction
Smh... This scene made me mad as hell. This would never happen in a real college swac band 🤣😂
Connie Marie ... Sho you right
And he was a crab. He would’ve got his ass beat
Sean gave him his spot since Devin was cocky. And at the crucial moment Devin didn't take that spotlight when it was given to him. And Sean did it himself as he originally was but Devin challenge him. And when Sean wasn't living up to the moment as seen in the clip that's when Devin then took the spotlight lol.
Ye cuz no one wants to stand out n take a risk that’s what’s wrong wit this generation
@@rhern206 Wise words yo!
He couldn't read music but his talent to memorize a sequence on spot was impressive.
This was the reason 90% of black people played drums
Hell yeah, this movie made me want to play percussion as well. If it wasn’t for me growing up with this film, I wouldn’t played music
@@_WOR ...bruh tf?
I played trumpet because according to the trumpet section leader in the beginning of the movie, we’re the voice of the band. I agreed and I didn’t regret it one bit lol.
My area (Chino Hills Southern California) is famous for drumlin we but we are almost entirely Asian
Yep!
I definitely understood why Dr Lee was mad, what I didn't understand is why he didn't punish Devan too? Now I realized that he felt that Sean knew better than to 1 up him.
Still have goosebumps when I hear this !! After those years !
To witness your Children going ALL-OUT like this....To have been a part of their Lives...To see a younger Brother becoming a Peer/Equal with his other Brother...
TO negotiate CONFLICT via absolute performance and sheer proof. That's what this is. No violence, just skill and performance. AMAZING!! 😇🥰😯😯🤠😎🤓🤓
I've had a few moments like this in my Life. WOW!! This scene still takes my beathe away. Good Job, folks. GREAT job!!~...
When I first watched the movie I thought it was lame but when I grew up i was watching the movie like hell if i can get a drum like that I'd join any band
It was kind of dope with both of them playing though.
When the homework due at 11:59 and your doing it a 11:56
"WTF is this Ninja doing"
Voice inside Dr. Lee's brain
This scene was so intense yet so lit.
An ex marching band member, the band wouldn't be the same without the drum-line or our director
Epic,I like when devin did the solo
That's a huge stunt like in any marching band you will either be called out at practice or get yelled at by the band director trust me for aspiring line drummers don't ever do this unless it's part of the show
I had a hard time finding this movie, i'm 24 now and when I first seen this movie I was probably 10 years or less.
Great memory
Child hood memories…. Watched this movie about 20xs
I remember when my band teacher used to get mad at me because I wouldn’t join marching band 😂😂😂
Same here.
That is like insanely funny how he takes a solo at the end but has crushed diddles. EVEN WITH A PROFESSIONAL SOUND STUDIO RECORDING
I love it Nick cannon learn the solo just by seeing it ones that's a goat
When I was a kid, I was rooting for Devon, and as a student I began to understand Sean. Now my hero is Dr. Lee, who is strong enough not to strangle these fools😂
