    Man those 80s cardinals teams were always so solid but we’re stuck in an extremely difficult NFC East and just couldn’t seem to make the playoffs. This ‘84 team might’ve been the best of them all. A top 5 offense in the NFL with Lomax having a career year, complemented by a solid defense and incredible pass rush. Unsurprisingly, kicker was their biggest weakness and cost them the season.
    Even though they only went 9-7 I truly believe this might’ve been one of the greatest teams ever to miss the playoffs. After week 5, the cardinals finished 7-4 with all 4 losses being by 1 score. If the cards had won this one they would’ve hosted Chicago in the divisional round, a team they dominated earlier in the season. Regardless, it all would’ve probably been for nothing because the 49ers were just on another level that year...

      Yes. O'Donoghue was always an absolute mess. Have no clue why they kept him for so long. He was one of, if not the worst regular kicker in the NFL at the time

      Yeah Niners we're winning it in 84 no doubt. And vividly remember how badly Cards beat Bears earlier that year, was actually surprised at that because outside of NFC Championship Game in SF, Cardinals gave Bears an ass kicking which was pretty rare after mid83.

      Pretty sure the Cardinals had a losing record during the 80's, probably something like 20 more loses than wins. You can't brag up the Cardinals of that era, they had a few nice players, but overall were a diseased cesspool.

    My sophomore year in college, we (the marching band) spent this day on a bus from Shreveport (LA) to Blacksburg (VA) following the Independence Bowl debacle against Air Force. A couple (alumni) who traveled with us, also big Redskins fans, wound up purchasing a portable TV when we made a stop somewhere in Mississippi and we wound up watching the last quarter on the bus.
    Thanks for uploading this game in its entirety; this ranks with some of the top games we played during the Gibbs I era. The 1984 season was crazy for the NFC East with four teams in contention going into the final two weeks.

    Those were great times for watching football. Todays game is difficult to watch. Everybody plays the same. The rules favor the offense so much so that the offense literally has to make a mistake or be completely inept to not score. I've seen enough slants and screens to last a lifetime. I'm glad these old games are here for us to enjoy.

    • @steves9964
      @steves9964 11 месяцев назад +2

      That's an excellent point about everyone playing the same now. Back in this era you could win with different formulas and there was balance in the game among rushing and passing, offense and defense...and even special teams. Now it's all about having an elite QB, and if you don't have one you have no chance.

      Of all the plans pulled out of the vase by Pete Rozelle's secretary, this was the only one with the Cardinals in the East. Really, the NFC should have been:
      East--Atlanta, NY, Philadelphia, Washington (Tampa Bay)
      Central--Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Minnesota, St. Louis
      West--Dallas, New Orleans, Los Angeles, San Francisco
      When the Cardinals moved, Rozelle should have told the owners to STFU and swapped the Cardinals and Falcons (under the plan actually used, of course).

    Ah, a classic regular season finale indeed. The Cardinals were perhaps the best team of the early '80s to not make the playoffs. Slightly ahead of the Phillips-era Saints (better offense) and the Starr-era Packers (better defense). Lomax was an underrated all-pro at QB; Ottis Anderson was perhaps the most underrated tailback of that era and ditto for Roy Green at WR. And their pass rush on D was stout, as you can see. It was just tough as nails to compete in the NFC East the way it used to be. And agreed with previous posters about how ironic Madden and Summerall's comments were about taking aggressiveness out the game. Madden is retired but still around....I'm sure it pains him to watch what the league has become.

      The rules were much simpler and more comprehensible in these old games, and the referees had not hijacked the game yet with penalties on seemingly every other play. Far fewer TV timeouts. Also, great announcers who kept the stats to the necessary minimum and relevance. The announcers today give too much information and don’t explain its relevance. Also today there is a terrible tendency for the announcers to moralize and to tell a “story”. Let football be football.

      You're right, but to do that in 1984 is amazing. This why it was a shame that it took him so long to make the HOF. Also, we aren't going to see a team with 2 1,000 yard rushers again. No one will run the ball enough to accomplish that. Offensive coordinators are too impatient for the running game to be of significance. Hence Marshawn Lynch not getting the ball against the patriots, because they 'see' something with the defense. Would never have happened with riggins or Gerald Riggs.

      I agree with you completely. That offense . . . they could play with anyone, and had they won this game NFL history may have been altered significantly because the Redskins ended up facing the Bears, and the Bears beat them in a war at RFK, 23-19, their first playoff win since 1963. They lost 23-0 to SF in the NFCCG, but that loss served as a springboard for the legendary '85 Bears season.
      If STL wins and they end up playing the Bears, then that could've been a serious problem for the Bears because they beat CHI pretty convincingly in wk7 that year. Lomax was fantastic that season, and Roy Green was absolutely incredible. STL could matchup with ANY defense in football that season, and they matched up against the Bears much better than WASH did. They would've been a formidable postseason foe in 1984.

    • @SECRETARIATguy224
      @SECRETARIATguy224 2 года назад +1

      84 Cards would've been extremely dangerous in the 84 postseason, and that 9-7 record was very deceiving . . . just a few plays from a few games go different, and they'd have been 11-5 or even 12-4.
      Born n raised a Bear fan myself, and the 84 Cards scared the beJesus out of me. I think they'd have beaten the Bears in the playoffs that year because McMahon was out.
      Another team that would've been a serious handful in the playoffs was the '83 Bears. They finished 8-8, but had agonizing back-to-back OT losses in wk3 and wk4 [NO&BALT], plus a game at GB wk14 that they also should've won. Forget that game at GB; if they won those two OT games, and they definitely should have, they win the Central instead of Detroit, and that team really came in the last 6 weeks of the season. Their offense was extremely dangerous, with Payton and the running game [obviously], but McMahon was healthy and Gault had a very good rookie year, but his speed meant defenses had to account for him, which meant that teams couldn't stack up against the run . . . and the defense by the last 5-6 weeks of that season was absolutely ferocious . . . could've been very interesting because had the Bears won their division instead of DET, the Bears would've played SF, and even though the game would've been in SF, that game would've been much more difficult for the 49ers, as the 49ers had been beaten by the Bears during the season.
      The '83 Niners were good, but they weren't the juggernaut they became in 84, so an 83 playoff game against the Bears would've been interesting. Anybody's game.
      I think of STL gets to the playoffs in 84, they'd have beaten the Bears.
      If the Bears get in in 83, they'd have been tough, but I'm not as sure they'd have actually won a playoff game.

      I always remembered Lomax's 2nd half stat line: 25 of 28 for 318 and 2TDs. Against that pass rush at that stadium with so much on the line. If O'Donoghue had hit that FG then it would have gone down as one of the great QB performances of all-time. Alas, it's just a great stat line that nerds like me remember!

  • @jackprecip5389
    @jackprecip5389 Год назад +2

    If you watch the video closely of the last Neil O'Donoghue FG attempt to win the game (2:41:45), you'll see that the holder, Benny Perrin, fumbles the ball trying to put it on its end (watch for the laces and you'll see it), and poor O'Donoghue literally has to try to kick a football that's lying on its side, which is virtually impossible, and why the kick was so bad. O'Donoghue was an erratic kicker anyway, who was only 50% for his career in the 40 to 49 yard range, but he had no chance here, as the holder Perrin (RIP) muffed the snap. One has to think the rushed pressure of trying to get the snap off in time contributed to Perrin's muff, but since it was 4rth down with a running clock, they had no other choice but to hurry.

      This last minute missed FG wasn't O'Donoghue's fault. Watch the video closely, the holder, Benny Perrin, fumbles the ball at the last second trying to put the ball on its point, and O'Donoghue has to literally try to kick the ball as it's lying flat on the ground, which is virtually impossible. Look for the laces of the ball, and you'll see the muff by the holder. O'Donoghue went 2 for 2 on the other FG attempts (which were both short ones he's supposed to make) in this game, so I wouldn't blame O'Donoghue for this loss, as NOBODY could have made a 48 yard FG kicking a ball lying flat on the ground.

I used to live there and I can tell you St. Louis officials and the Cards owner did NOT get along well, they hadn't for years. And the city was just not going to help him build a new stadium. Actually, that's a pretty unfair comment. O'Donoghue made TWO last second 40+ yard FG's to win games for the Cardinals in 1984 that they would have lost if he missed. One was a last second 46 yarder against the Colts in week 4 to win 34-33, and then in week 13 he made a last second 44 yarder against the Eagles at home to win 17-16. In this game against the Redskins, he was already 2 for 2, and this last second miss wasn't his fault. Watch the video of the last second FG try very closely, and you'll see that the holder, Benny Perrin, muffs the ball trying to put it onto its point (watch for the laces and you'll see it), and the ball is literally lying flat on the ground when O'Donoghue kicks it, giving him (or anyone else for that matter) no chance, which is why the kick was so bad. Now, I'm not nominating O'Donoghue for the Hall Of Fame mind you, he was an average kicker at best who was erratic outside of 40 yards in his career, but in 1984, he was clutch when it counted, and this miss that cost them the playoffs certainly wasn't his fault, as NOBODY can kick a 48 yard FG when the ball is lying flat on the ground.

    • @jackprecip5389
      @jackprecip5389 10 месяцев назад

      @Bigfriendly1570 O'Donoghue was actually pretty lousy for Tampa Bay in '78 and '79, which makes one wonder why Bidwell and Hanafin signed him to begin with? O'Donoghue did make some big kicks for them in 1984, and it was his best season as he was reliable inside 40 yards (and still erratic past that). Don't misunderstand me, I'm not trying to say Neil O' Donoghue was a good kicker, he wasn't, not even close, but he was at least "ok" in '84, made some clutch kicks that year, and certainly can't be blamed for this miss against the Redskins. Also, while I'm not positive, I'm pretty sure the Rams (9-7) would have gotten the 5th NFC playoff spot over the Cardinals in 1983 even if the Cardinals won that MNF game to go 9-7. The Rams had a better conference record, and I think they also were better vs. common opponents, so while the '83 tiebreaker rules are far away from memory, I can't think of a scenario where the Cards win any tiebreak vs. the Rams since they didn't play them that year.

      Jonathan Hairston..Not only on that achievement alone but also during his era, Moseley was perhaps the most feared kicker in the league. So much so that former Eagles coach, Dick Vermeil, had the league investigate Moseley's kicking shoe. He and I'm sure other coaches around the league felt that his kicking shoe was "loaded."
      Among his other credits was as a multiple pro bowler. Led the league 3 times in field goal attempts and 4 times in field goals made. At the time of his retirement set the NFL record for most points by a kicker in a season and extra points made. Most field goal attempts in a season. But his most notable accomplishment was being named the league MVP. A pinnacle that will never be set again.
      Moseley should be in the HOF.

The 3rd down play was the 5 yard short pass completion. The 5 yards was big, since anything over a 50 yard FG attempt would have been tough for O'Donoghue with his limited range, but as it turned out, they would have had a better chance kicking a 52 yard FG without being rushed, then the 47 yard rushed try which had the fumbled snap.
