"Freehand" is my favorite Gentle Giant album too...along with "Acquiring the Taste", "Three Friends, "Octopus", "The Power & The Glory", "Gentle Giant", "In a Glass House", "Interview", etc. Well basically, all Gentle Giant albums from the first one all the way up the catalog is my favorite Gentle Giant album....until you get to "The Missing Piece" which (in my opinion) was when their records started getting rather...meh. But, ALL of them before "Missing Piece" are fantastic.

@@mariosandri4010 As a fan from their beginnings, I still bought patchy 'Missing piece' (more like missing direction) and 'Giant for a day' (Giant's day had been and sadly gone) when they were first released, still hoping for some of their past magic in vain, didn't even bother with 'Civilian'. So sad it was a slow death and ignoble ending to the band's career over their last three albums. Although, I did check out 'Civilian' on I-tunes recently and liked Kerry's 'Shadows on the street'. I always loved when Kerry took lead vocals for one of his mellow numbers, 'Aspirations' being my favourite. Ordered Steve Wilson's new mixes of 'Octopus' and 'Power and the glory' so really relishing wallowing in GG's glory days.

Fantastic track. Boy, no one does this stuff quite like GG. And i say 'this stuff' cos i don't think 'prog' really does it justice. The melding of all the elements, musicianship, vocals, harmonies. The tune, with it's melodious passages that just as quickly drift into the discordant, then back again. It's brilliant stuff. There's a couple of tracks on this album that don't quite hit the mark imho. But tracks like this, and 'Aspirations' more than make up for them. Great album.

For me Gary Green with Gentle Giant was the equivalent of what Martin Barre was to Jethro Tull. two immensely talented guitarists with incomparable sound and playing but who never put themselves in the spotlight but rather served the compositions. it is a rare thing!

Since you're dipping your toe into doing video reactions, I would nominate Gentle Giant's "On Reflection" for the studio-version-then-live-version treatment. The 1978 BBC Sight & Sound video really shows off the GG live experience (including, unfortunately, Derek's super-awkward stage patter at the start.)
Also, it will never not be hilarious to me that John Weathers performed dressed head to toe as a player on the Oakland Athletics, including personalized WEATHERS jersey, uniform number 69 (nice).

I saw gentle giant back in 1972 at the bayfront center in St Petersburg Florida. They were opening for Jethro Tull on the thick as a brick tour. I remember when they were done, saying to my wife, if Jethro Tull is better than these guys they're going to have to be incredible. Well it turned out that Jethro Tull was incredible. But gentle giant was awesome as well. They were very much like Jethro tull. But Tull, was a monster on stage. But after that night I was a fan of gentle giant and Jethro Tull forever. That "clavichord" thing you keep identifying is a Hohner Clavinet D6. The tune is built on a hemiola, the most basic polyrhythm of two against three (quarter notes against dotted quarter notes). Giant came out of the British blues boom and Gary Green is a heavy blues head. If you like that aspect, check out their first album (s/t).

Hi JP. Dave from Across The Ocean. Probably my favourite track from this album so far. If I remember correctly, GG used to get moderate reviews because they were thought to be complex for the sake of it. Your reaction to No God's A Man is spot on in saying that there's a steady underlying structure on top of which we get the trademark GG harmonies, and an effortless switch in instrumental style between folk/medieval, blues and rock (with some beautifully intricate guitar playing). Similarities here with Jethro Tull's Songs from the Wood/ Heavy Horses period, and it makes musical sense to my simple brain (not all GG tracks do this).

I usually take such reviews with a grain of salt. When it comes to prog, I don't think it's a coincidence that more often than not the albums with the mixed reviews are actually the best. 😂 (e.g., TP&TG, Relayer, A Passion Play, Hemispheres, Animals, etc.)

You know it's a funny thing but I've noticed with well if you listen to the benefit album by Jethro Tull and you listen to a lot of the giant stuff actually there's an influencer which is seemingly unlikely but I believe it's Eric Clapton of all people and why not I mean why not emulate slowhand himself yeah there was that album Blind Faith I don't know if you reacted to any of that such a solid album you know I was so bummed out when cream broke up but then Here Comes Blind Faith and you got Steve Winwood and Clapton together and of course Ginger Baker just showed up to the sessions they didn't want him at all because he's such a troublemaker but God dang if he didn't make that album fucking great because his drumming is just so amazing despite his cantankerous unruliness in being such a hard guy to get along with you know it's funny I saw him at a club this place called The Strand which was on Palos Verdes Drive intersected with Sepulveda and he used to be a part of a motel and then it became of high-end grocery store later on I would have loved to have went in and filmed that particular grocery store hello and here we have the salad vegetable section this is where Miles Davis played and over here we have the bakery section or Devo setup pisses funny they would they would set up in different parts of the club Steve hat on me put his hand on it real quick I just went up and grabbed the drumsticks both hands I just held onto his drumsticks to see if I could get that Mojo if Ginger Baker would have saw me do that he would have kicked my ass but anyhow the point of the story is they did these songs like had to cry today the Blind Faith one off the only did one album and they broke up cuz people like them too much they didn't get any criticism well shit it just turned out all the music they did was fantastic anyhow Steve Winwood was a multi-instrumentalist he played the organ and guitar and they would just play solos together at the same time oh man what a cool sound well Jethro Tull and gentle giant and others took note of that and they would overdub there solos I mean dude check out any song on benefit and yeah I think his name is Gary green anyhow his guitar solos are heavily influenced by Clapton Style which is good because it brings someone like gentle giant back to Earth and like Hey we're doing rock and roll man you know you could call it whatever but yeah we do all sorts of things yet when that guitar starts playing it's rock now there now there is I'm very unique stuff that he does just like Steve Hackett wood and that sort of thing but you'll hear it man rock and roll Period later dude take 'er easy

I also want to disagree with All Music Guide 3 star review. That would be kinda low just about ANY Gentle Giant album. They find such a great balance between avent garde and traditional rock. If you think All Musc got it wrong, the 1979 Rolling Stone record guide gave it ONE star. But who takes t Rolling Stone magazine seriously? I have the RS record guide and look through it when I need a laugh. Once in a while they get luckey (as when they gave Close to the Edge 5 stars). Anyway, this is a fine album that needs to be heard by anyone into adventurous music. Enjoy!

During Gentle Giant's recording era I was not all that impressed, because they seemed to sound like a 'Yes' wannabe band and this song is very much reminiscent of early material from the Yes Album. Don't get me wrong, I liked Gentle Giant well enough because I enjoyed that genre of music, even Jethro Tull did their thing with the album "Songs From The Wood" that was a step away from their usual material but still made it distinctly Jethro Tull.

      @markburrows1179 3 года назад

@@ithaliem John, let me explain something to you. Music isn't a contest of who is better or worse. Opinion is subjective, not objective. Yes, was doing their thing before Gentle Giant was, and we are talking about high calibre musicians that have been members of a host of supergroups and have done solo work for multiple genres, in Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Peter Banks, Tony Kaye, and Bill Bruford. When keyboardist Tony Kaye left, he was replaced by none other than Rick Wakeman, another superstar and former member of the Strawbs. Other players swapped in and out, which is common with bands that tour through the years, as some musicians prefer working in the studio and don't care to tour, while others are tour enthusiasts for two reasons, 1) that's where the money is and 2) that's where the freedom to jam long solos become epic. Steve Howe was also an on again off again member of Yes. At one point Anderson, Wakeman, Bruford, and Howe got together, and recorded an album and went on tour. Ian Anderson recorded some remarkable albums with composer Vangelis. Now, when we look at Gentle Giant who lasted basically a decade, and before that, the three Shulman brothers and drummer Martin Smith belonged to a late 60s Psychedelic band called Simon Dupree and the Big Sound which only had a top 10 hit in the UK called Kites. Didn't chart in North America. After Smith left Gentle Giant they used drummer Malcolm Mortimore for less than a year, which is sad because he was the only high ranked drummer they had, and one of the highest requested session drummers. Then they brought in John Weathers, who drummed for Man, and a bunch of independents, oh yeah, and the Sikh Elvis, Peter Singh, actually he was sort of cool as far as Elvis impersonators go.
Like I said, I don't have anything against Gentle Giant, I own all of their albums, I wouldn't do that, if I didn't like them, but as a musicologist, I have to respect the professional accomplishment what they have accomplished as individuals, production values, engineering, and Yes, is far more polished, although Jon Anderson has not been their lead vocalist since 2008, except for the 1991 release of the album Union, which brought old and contemporary members of Yes together for one album. Yes is still a current band touring.
I don't doubt that some 'fans' are going to prefer Gentle Giant over Yes, I understand why people so choose to do so. There is all sorts of things I enjoy that is lost on people. Such as the two albums put out by Toe Fat, where 2 members of that band became Uriah Heep and another member was part of Jethro Tull. Try finding those two Toe Fat albums in original vinyl. Unless you already got them, you will be hard pressed to find them. Even the CDs are out of distribution. Their might be some import pressings if one really searches. I also enjoy Theatrical Rock such as Sparks, early 10CC, Godley & Creme (who left 10CC), and Flo & Eddie (former vocalists for the Turtles). I enjoy the songwriting and vocals of Harry Nilsson who employs humor and had a 3.5 octave range as a tenor. I liked Donovan Leitch's Cosmic Wheels album, while no one else seemed to care for it, I don't know why, he has a 5 octave vocal range and really let it show on that album. Yet it went out of production in North America. I wore out 3 vinyl versions and didn't think to preserve one. I finally found one from Japan, but I also got a CD from Britain for listening purposes. A lot of my albums I put on reel to reel. But that got tedious after a while. Now I can do all sorts of different formats on Blu-Ray DVD that are non digital. Otherwise WAV. WAV is not compressed and take a lot of space, but Blu-Ray has that space and then some. FLAC is compressed and takes up less space and is still non digital, but WAV is still better. Yes, I am aware that Discs are suppose to be a digital media, but being an audiophile, there is a workaround for that. Point being, get the closest reproduction to vinyl/turntable analog audio as possible, as clean as possible for high wattage from tube amplifiers.
We may not be listening to music at the same levels within the same environments through similar equipment.

It is only my subjective opinion. Yes is a great band, no doubt.

My second listen made me think of Chris Squire's solo LP. The organ especially. It's Score has increased. It will do so with every subsequent listen. Great Band. Goofy.

Again, not to overstate how OVERRATED I consider Genesis (I know you care about them), but I find this album and ALL the first 4-5 Gentle Giant, Soft Machine, Caravan, and Yes albums to flirt with and/or ACHIEVE actual genius, while the contemporaneous Genesis output to not match them apart from occasional moments in between expressions of Peter Gabriel's (and later Phil Collins') moments of dreary preciousness. I hope you will take the time to start from the beginning with:
Soft Machine (I've mentioned this before)
    Caravan
    Yes
    Gentle Giant; and,
    King Crimson
The rest of "prog" and the influences one might call "proto-prog" do NOT match get ANYWHERE near this output apart from the three short ELP numbers ("Still, You Turn Me On," "In the Beginning," and "Lucky Man.") The rest are just cute, at best. Thanks.
