In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music by Wobbler for the first time on the channel. I first heard of this band earlier this year, when I heard Five Rooms for the first time. When our Guest DJ, Andrew, requested music from this same album, I was eager to listen to it again. And, I'm also listening to By the Banks, the first track on the album.
This band is a wonder...a mirage or sorts...their sound is reminiscent of the great prog rock of the 1970s, but it has a 21st century flair. If you've been longing for some new music that is written and performed with the same attention to artistry as your favorite classic bands, give Wobbler a try!

All of Wobbler's albums are good, but their 4th album "From Silence to Somewhere" is an absolute prog classic imo. Really glad to see you listen to some Wobbler on the channel! For anyone who's interested in more recent prog that's heavily inspired by the classics, I highly recommend the band All Traps on Earth (the new project of former Änglagård members, another classic prog revival band) who I consider to be, at least musically speaking, Wobbler's darker and more brooding Swedish cousin/rival.

They seem to travel to Quebec every year and I've often considered making the trip to see them. They absolutely embrace the early 70's prog sound and do a fantastic job putting their own spin on this beloved style. To achieve this end, they almost exclusively use instruments of the era. They have become quite adept at fixing and maintaining this gear, especially the period keyboards, to help them achieve this truly authentic sound. Glad Wobbler and Dr. Doug have met... hopefully we will see them back on the show again soon... "From Silence to Somewhere" would be another great feature.

I was listening to Wobbler and their first album «Hinterland» hundreds of times after I first heard it in the summer of 2006. Then after some time I kinda forgot about them/it and only now thought of them and started to listen to their last album. And I was taken straight back to that summer. Everything except the vocals (they obviously have a new lead singer) is like it is an extended version of their first album, which again is the best sign of quality that one could get.
Until this day I never heard about this youtube channel, and I’m now also amazed by the musical ear of Doug. I instantly subscribed of course and I will for sure come back to the channel every now and then. Doug; it would be cool if you could listen to the song Hinterland from their first album. It is almost 28 mins long, but as usual it sounds like a medley of a bunch of songs. I especially love the bass line at around 12-13 mins into the song. It gives me the goose buns evertime I hear it. One of the things that as Doug said -- they're in the wrong decade -- this band writes as if they were in that era, but even more importantly they use period equipment, both instruments and amplifiers. It sort of authenticates their sound, but OTOH it shouldn't sound otherwise. Yes Fragile, Close to the Edge, ELP's Brain Salad Surgery, Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick and Aqualung, and finally Genesis Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. None of these I had never heard before, and I was instantly hooked.

I too enjoy Porcupine Tree as well as Steve Wilson's solo material and, yes, Gavin is an outstanding drummer. As for bands you might no know, there's the Italian band The Watch, Hats Off Gentlemen Its Adequate, Saga (a Canadian band) and Bozzio Levin Stevens. The Watch has a lot of original material. However, they are known for performing Peter Gabriel era Genesis on tour. They are simply amazing! Simone Rossetti is like Peter Gabriel v2.0! Though Nad Sylvan does as admirable job, I'm surprised that Steve Hackett didn't hire Simone for the Genesis Revisited stuff.
You might know Saga, but I figured they are worth mentioning as they never had a huge following here in the US. In fact, their biggest fan base is in Germany. Saga's first five albums are stellar as is their singular concept album Generation 13. Though all three members of Bozzio Levin Stevens are well known, it was a short-lived project that only lasted two albums. In my opinion, the first album, Black Light Syndrome, is the better one. The second album is too polished. Still good though.

Some additional info: If there is one band who has captured the sound of the golden age of Progressive Rock (1969 - 1975) without sounding regressive or copycat, it is the Norwegian band Wobbler. The band has always had an energetic and youthful approach to the classic prog era, and has managed to blow new life into the genre.
Wobbler´s fifth offering is an exciting blend of carefully planned and jammed material that encompasses everything the band has done up to now. Dwellers of the Deep consists of four distinctive pieces and is a broad looking glass into Wobbler´s creative whims and playful exuberance. The album showcases the band´s mastery of dynamics and flow, with passages and themes veering from the scenic and serene to the downright rocking.
On the final track, Wobbler is in full blast, with a 19 minutes suite taking the listener through aspects of the darker sides of Wobbler´s sound.
The lyrical themes on the album deals with human emotion, and the ongoing struggle between juxtaposed forces within the psyche. An introspective voyage among the realms of memories, feelings and instincts, where the light is brighter, and the dark is darker.
The concepts of wonder, longing and desperation permeates the histories told, and the currents from the deep are ever present.
The production is open, detailed, warm and punchy, making the soundscape put together by the now seasoned sound alchemist Lars Fredrik Frøislie to an aural feast. New musical directions further the quintet’s burgeoning aural idiosyncrasies and solidify the band stature as one of the most exciting and interesting bands on the global music scene, independent of genre.

when this started, I was like 'They sound like classic Yes and early Genesis!' This is the music I love. That Five Rooms tune I can't even BEGIN to count it!!! Sounds like 15/8 or something close

A new band for me - thanks . Don't care if their music has a "been done" feel about it. Great that a band is still producing material that channels 70s prog.

Doug, if you dig Wobbler, you should check out Anekdoten. Their songs Gravity, Wheel, From Within and Get Out Alive are my personal favorites, but all their stuff is amazing.

Love hearing your thoughts on music Doug, it's great to have a place to come explore a vast amount of music with a little musical analysis. I'm a huge fan of progressive rock and I'm really surprised I haven't heard these guys yet, so thanks for the tunes! One my favorite bands of these past 10 years has been a rock band called "Elder" and theyre a little along the lines of wobbler's progressive style but maybe with a little more heaviness due to the heavy distortion used on the instrumentals, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on some of their pieces. Could you perhaps check out their song "Lore" off of their "Lore" album? Could make for a good Metal Monday! Keep it up buddy and I hope you take care!

Wow, never expected to see Wobbler on a reaction video. They are a great band for sure. But they are not an anomaly. There is a very fertile prog scene, with some great bands. Some of my favorites are The Flower Kings, Cast, Nine Skies, Barock Project, The Samurai of Prog, Arabs in aspic and Evership.
    Cheers.

Got some Wishbone Ash flavor to it too (IMHO) Course I'm a big Ash fan since forever (Pilgrimage one of the best albums ever produced...again IMHO) back to Wobbler my first time hearing them I am impressed and intend to take a deeper dive into them. Just a 71 year old retired Rocker of no consequence just a lot of time on my hands to re-visit old and and find New music I've missed since Radio became wall to wall Hip Hop and RAP Crap (sometime in the late 80s). Keep on keeping on Doug

The "low flute" you comment on at 9:14 is to my ears likely to be Mellotron. Lars uses 70s "vintage" keyboards almost exclusively including Mellotron, Minimoog and Hammond. He has quite a collection I understand! You also commented on the bass sounding like Chris Squire. Kristian plays a 70s Rickenbacker (prominent in the video) and I don't think the similarity is accidental.
