    Very nice demonstration. You are right when a radio operator should look at the antenna , coax and quality of radio when looking for decent performance. As for using amps, it appears you need a lot of power to make a real big difference but then you sacrifice your SWR and possible being over-driven. Also, spurious signal and bleed-over can be terrible to other users in your area. Thanks so much for the demonstration Fred.

      I agree. A quarter wavelength vertical dipole mounted very high will get a lot further than a heavily amplified signal on a low, mobile antenna. I question the need for an amplifier sometimes. 1 watt will get you across the continent when 11 meters is open. When it is closed, 1000+ watts will not get you around the city.

      @@indridcold8433 One could argue the use of an amplifier in mobile applications; Sometimes with a little bit more 'uhmpf',
      the signal is better readable. But again, the difference between 10Watts and 50 or 60 Watts is almost negligible.

      @@eknaap8800 It really does not hurt anything anymore either. The analogue television signals and cellular phones were very prone to crosstalk. Today, not much is prone to the analogue 27 megahertz signal unless it is right on it. I have installed 10 meter vertical dipole antennas on television antennas and the television signal is uneffected. I think the operator was running 300 watts. If that were done in the analogue television days, television would have been unwatchable. When was the last time anybody heard any sort of CB talk on a cellular phone? It was likely the 1990s.

    • @eknaap8800
      @eknaap8800 3 года назад

      @@indridcold8433 Cellular phones work on a very different (higher) frequency than CB. However, as a HAM operator, I have to make sure that my antennas are properly tuned to the frequency I'm operating on; either by the use of a proper tuned antenna or an ATU.
      On SSB with relatively high power (>250 Watts), it otherwise could cause interference with radio reception, WiFi signals and TV signals. The cables used on these devices are more than often not very well shielded. This can happen on all amateur frequencies I'm using.
      I have many types of click-on 'chokes' in my shack, for use on those cables, which normaly cures the problems at my neighbours.

    Antenna is the most important part but an amp helps it seems like about 12-15 watts sideband is equivalent to 100 W am because a friend that's about 10 miles away I can communicate on sideband with stock 12 watts but on a.m. I can only make it to him with a 100 Watts thats a mobile in my pickup not a base so they definitely have their place I like amps. but it is fun seeing how far you can get running barefoot awesome video

    Very sound advice Fred.. If you're operating from the comfort of home I'd say it's much more economical to have your rig set-up all in one box (plus the PSU), and enjoy the facility of shortwave ham band coverage and the extra filtering , sensitivity, built-in power, versatility and convenience .. Ham gear also tends to have a more 'balanced' TX/RX ... Putting up 5/8 wave, full size antenna high up is not always possible . If you can get up a half wave at roof level and tune it in well, the extra power output/receive quality of a ham rig will certainly give you a much more level playing field. Always remember ...The government has it's own internet, mobile phone system and broadcast facility.. (controlled from GCHQ). If they close down our internet/mobile phone system, we still have hams and CB'ers..We are much more difficult to stop or close down. Be prepared !!

    Merry Christmas Fred,my QTH is not the best,as cb band band is right down the bottom edge of VHF band,the best advise I can give having similar issues base station wise.1.Use the best quality coax (thicker shielded or double shield types ie Eco Flex keeps cable radiation level down to a minimuim\Hi quality compression fit Plugs,I use the Silver plated types ,2. As its VHF line of sight comms you want,sometimes dont use high gain 5/8th antenna types if have high surrounding hilly terrain,high urban buildings and low down at sea level,the angle of radiation of these type of antenna are very low and really designed for height 50-60ft masts to get them away from ground,there no point pumping RF into house and alike if antenna sitting 20-30ft from ground,unless you live high on a hill top.3.If you do use a 5/8th type mount it well above the roof line as noise can be present in wiring in roof esp PLC,i cannot stress height is better than gain ( and lets face it 6dB is only 1 s-point,less any losses in poor constructed/lossy impedance matching! and for a lots of metal in sky).Ive done experiments and have found a quarter wave ground plane antenna with three counterpoise ground plane,elevated a lot higher than most would dare mount a 21foot antenna,has less wind loading and provides a higher angle or radiation to get your signals over mountains,urban terrain and can out perform for Line of Sight uses in most cases 4.Another tip i can offer if using modern SMP Power supplies (try to add or use a shield 2 pole AC line filter as well) on CB or any other 2 way radio,something recently discovered dont ground the antenna mount to mast it should float and be isolated from mast,the mast should be earth strapped via a ground stake,but the antenna (must have ground planes on antenna side to work)mount should be isolated,reason being ive discovered SMP go very noisy when you ground the DC negative terminal to frame ground (EARTH).Most modern cb common the DC neg wire is connected to the internal pcb and radio chassis\SO239 antenna socket and this creates the issue with SMP as coax braid sits at DC neg,minute you connect your EARTHED mast you create a short circuit that the SMP does not like,it causes the SMP to create RFI and DC noise! Ive switched over to fibre masts and have zero noise from my SMP power supplies now used on my equipment .The Old school type CB like the SS3900,SS360,Cobra148,SS158,Ranger,Galaxy etc use a floating ground system,the DC negative line is not connected to radio chassis,its done via a capacitor so generally dont have this issue with SMP use.I cant go to much into detail on this as have limited comment area here.5.If your going down the route of Linear amps if we going there ,make sure use a good high quality Low Pass Filter to keep IMD,RFI, leads and generally nasties at bay, keep drive level low,dont over drive the inputs,good quality coax patch and run them as low as needed,as a rule of thumb at least 50% down from actual operating specs to run them cool.6. all the above is mainly for base station use,but if moblie longest antenna practicable on vehicle and mount it high on roof mines Tri-mag mount ,pig barrel spring and 9ft whip for range.Its a complicated subject and very many variables can affect the outcome esp with installations,but Height on 27mhz for Line of Sight comms (not DXing) is your friend Ive found as this is really the subject we are talking about for day to day communications on CB band.I have dumped my high gain,low angle radiation antenna and opted for a 10ft ali pole in ground,a 10m fibre mast mounted to it to isolate it,a 20mm wide 9FT tape antenna , with 3 wire counterpoises isolated,no gain (sometime less gain=less background noise) and getting better results than a 5/8th for Line of sight (not DX) up to 40+miles reliable LOS Comms or better now,much more reliable as live in a urban area,low down sea level and hills surrounding me not the best place for radio at VHF Lowband! Great vid showing difference fred, every ones system is different esp area of ops and conditions,so take my advice as suggestions only from what Ive learnt experimenting on 27mhz over the last few years building antenna systems that work for me.I know some will\may disagree on the 5/8th wave antenna but for me me it just didnt cut it for me on line of sight comms use in my locality,a few friend did try similar systems and did report god results on very high mounted (lot higher than 21foot antenna) quarter wave ground plane antenna on 50-60ft masts in poor hilly terrain operation exceptional LOS ranges due to the signal angle lifted higher up compared to low angled type antennas,that said if they had been up on that hill with 5?8th wave with ground plane they prob would have had very stronger signals compared to a quarter wave ground plane antenna! Hope my info helps others,ill watch the extend vid in a bit Fred 73's rob

I have heard the difference a lot on 12 meters though, the rare times when I overhear people on 12 meters. It always seemed to me the antenna was the most important thing to get good quality.
