- Toy Story 3's ending is one of Pixar's MOST iconic. The best in the series, and probably the best from the entire studio! And yet, it wasn't always set like that. Recently we came to learn that during the development stages of the beloved Pixar modern classic, multiple drafts of the story were made, and it wasn't even guaranteed that Andy would give away his toys to Bonnie by the end. So let's have a look down into the alternative timeline of what this strange other ending would have entailed, and whether we're in the good timeline or the bad. ...Well, I certainly didn't expect it to recontextualise my perspective on the ending to the SEQUEL...
As nice a callback as Al's Toy Barn would've been, I definitely prefer the tense incinerator scene and the slow, emotional scene of Andy growing up and giving his toys to Bonnie, than just another action packed high speed chase.
I saw Toy Story 3 in theaters before my oldest brother went into the Air Force I was going into 4th grade and I was bawling through my 3D glasses panicking
I had nightmares in 2011 of me dying with Woody. I couldn’t believe how the toys betrayed Woody like this and I forced myself down the incinerator with him and we both died before saved; the toys Emily left us to die whilst Jessie tried running back to me and Woody but the toys dragged Jessie with them without saying her heart wrenching goodbye to Woody. It’s traumatising how I was lying on the metal coughing as Woody tried dragging me back up the comverbelt but Woody wasn’t strong enough so we just gave up and died
Fun fact about Toy Story 2: someone on the production team accidentally deleted the entire movie before its release, but someone else from the team had luckily saved it on another platform
Another fun fact: Toy Story 2's original plot actually got pitched to the director, but the director didnt like it so they only had 9 months to finish it and rework it.
A similar thing happened to Toy Story 1 thanks to its black friday reel, so they had less than a year to finish it before release.
Toy Story 4 had 70% of its plot scrapped, and had at least a year for it to be finished, and it became what it is today. Most characters sidelined and going against their character that was established

yeah but the thing that sucks is that the creators go like FUCK whatever happened in toy story 3 and how bonnie promised to take care of the toys and how woody said "We stick together"

I actually wanna see how the Alernate Ending would've looked like in the Final Cut of the Film
This was intriguing. I sadly acknowledge that what you said is true and most Toy stories do end in a trash furnace, but I'm glad Pixar gave us a happier ending. And while I would've liked a callback to Toy Story 2 with Al's Toy Barn, after that dramatic scene in the dump, I don't think a 'race against the clock' segment would've been necessary. All in all, as a long time Toy Story fan, I like the ending just the way it is.
It kind of reminds me of the omission of the Scouring of the Shire from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which would have made the ending anti-climactic had it been included.
As wonderful and heartwarming as Toy Story's ending was, the movie became a catalyst of why I became a hoarder & struggled to let go of stuff. I like to think I'm not the only one as a whole generation of kids were scarred by watching that movie in theaters.

My favorite Movie and Toy Story movie ever because I Fucking Love Toy Story 3
The real ending we got is definitely the best ending, yet lowkey the idea of a bunch of characters getting the wrong controllers for their vehicles and having to roll with it anyway does sound like a really funny idea in a vacuum. Just would not work for this movie.

If Anddy had kept his toys I imagine him either getting bullied, Selling half of them to make money when he one day gets desperate, or keeping them on a display shelf and becoming a toy collector. Maybe have an ending where he becomes a stop motion film maker and puts his toys in videos he uploads to RUclips. but honestly, Adults have very little use for toys and even fewer used for potato heads and pig banks. I can see him keeping Woody, Buz, Jessie, maybe Rex and Bules Eye but the rest are just all too juvenal and would have quickly been at a yard sale. A good more Wholesome ending would be to have Andy pack the toys in a box then have him come back for them in a few years after becoming a father him self and giving the toys to his child.
I imagine Toy Story 5 might be a "Andy's child" story
I personally would have loved to have ended Woody and Buz's story and focused on new characters. Ones set in a location far away from any place Andy could ever travel to so he would just never be in the story any more.
That or let Bonnie keep woody and watch her grow up.

Forkey is a character destined for the trash. Even if he staid with Bonnie, he would be trash with in 10 years. I can see Bonnie replacing him with a new toy she made from better materials. Learning to work with clay or wood or fabric to make a better quality toy.

thank god they stuck with this ending because although i love all the toy story movies, that ending is a big reason why i consider the 3rd movie the best out of all of them and while a throwback is a cool way to end it, that powerful ending was what truly made the film stand out from the rest of the series as a whole
I have to say this at least, it is a cool climatic finale scene, but it really isn't as good as the what we got.

So, I wouldn't mind the whacky chase if they ironed out the logic kinks, but I simply would not believe Andy taking all his toys to college. Woody I believe, as he's almost a security blanket/teddy bear type of toy, plus he looks like a collectable you can even display on a shelf (with Jessie and Bullseye they make a set) but the rest of the toys are clearly toys. Would he be hiding them under his bed? And would they have to listen when he had company over 😂

Fun fact, one of the great things about Studio Ghibli is alot of the fantastical creatures they use are actually based on Yokai from Japanese folklore. Luke Ponyo is a Ningyo that turns human and those ocean waves with eyes that take her away from Sasuke in the beginning are based on Umibōzo. Ghibli movies are FILLED with Yokai and its fascinating

Personally, I always really hated Toy Story 3 for being too different from the films I remembered enjoying, and LOVED Toy Story 4 for being able to harken back to the joy I felt watching 1 and 2. I liked the first two films for a reason, and when you deviate too far from that, you ruin the appeal of Toy Story for me. That is why I see 1, 2, and 4 as a complete trilogy and tend to ignore the third film. Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins is a much better film anyway; I consider it to be the TRUE third installment because it always had far more of what made Toy Story 1 and 2 great than Toy Story 3 or Lightyear did.

and 4 years later 1999 andy should be 10 but he is canonically 8
so then toy story 3 11 years later andy should be 21 but he is canonically 17
