I think parody is mostly used in movies and shows like this to drop their own characters into that popular story, while in this movie especially it's homage moreso, which I've noticed is more based on inserting story elements and tropes into your own story, using the tropes organically rather than just blindly referencing it.
No, Twitter, this isn't the canonical end to the franchise nor was it ever meant to be. Stephen didn't intend on this being the final SpongeBob product either, nor did he leave the show after the movie, he still worked on Season 4 as an Executive and so the movie being the finale is not true.

At the scene where they depart with the Patty wagen from the Krusty Krab in the german version the say: Wir sind, außer Haus! what means like we are to go like the license plate says which makes this scene in my opinion even better.
I'm a bit hesitant to watch this video, considering the only other video I know of that said this is the only good Spongebob movie was from 24 Frames of Nick, and in it, he was a needlessly condescending brat to all Sponge on the Run fans.
@@complex2live Well he did voice his hatred towards in it in a very needless condescending tone, and made it sound like he thinks that all fans of it are deliberately disrespecting Hillenburg’s grave. He didn’t necessarily say that, but he said things that made it sound like he was implying it. Not helped by how he’s the same jerk who insulted all Frozen 2 fans.
Did you notice that at the beginning SB Steps on Plankton & Dennis' Specific instruction was that he gets rid of SB by STEPPING on him. (Hence the spiked boot)
All the marketing being focused on only the last 20 minutes of the movie was pretty shitty though ngl. I'd prefer if it just stayed 2D the whole way through.
21:44 Fun Fact, the giant red fish that attempts to eat sponge bob and Patrick is actually based on a frog fish. It's a real fish and they in fact use tactics similar to an angler fish to lure their pray AKA food. Though they use a wiggly tissue of sorts on their body like a fishing poll almost as if frog fish are fisherman of sorts attempting to lore fish with bait.
They should've made a scene of Princess Mindy thanking David Hasselhoff for bringing SpongeBob, Patrick, and King Neptune's crown back to Bikini Bottom.
Arguably one of the most important films in my life. Ween is one of, if not my favorite band EVER. Stephen Hillenburg was a massive fan, and their work up until 1999 was INCREDIBLY influential to Spongbob. As much if not MORESO than Marine Biology.
The SpongeBob Movie (the game) for ps2 was a cornerstone of my childhood. I still remember being enamored with the aesthetic of the trench and even having dreams about it. To this day it and the level from battle for bikini bottom where you traverse the insides of a giant monster are some of my favorite level aesthetics ever.
For all you metal heads out there, that song that plays at the beginning of the Thug Tug scene is played by Motorhead, and its a paorady of their own song, "You Better Run", called "You Better Swim".
I wasn't allowed to watch any kids TV growing up; no Nickelodeon, Disney or Disney XD, cartoon network, any of that. I was allowed to watch boomerang and some Disney/ a few other movies. When I was 15, I was over at my high school boyfriends house and he made a SpongeBob reference that I didn't get, and when he found out I had never seen a single episode, he put on The Movie. I was hooked lol and can now quote episodes like a normal person. My point is, you're absolutely right that the opening scenes do everything they need to do in order to set up who the characters are and their roles/motivations. I had some knowledge of the show (SpongeBob and Patrick are friends, Squidward is grumpy and doesn't like SpongeBob, but that was about it), and I immediately understood the dynamics and character traits and it made it super easy to get into the movie without having to ask a bunch of questions, and just enjoy the ride, and then I actually had a good idea going into the show of what to expect.
It's honestly wild that it has been 20 years since the release of the first SpongeBob movie, and I've had a lot of fond memories of watching this movie for the first time, and even during reruns on TV! Also by the time I made this comment, I now realized that today is the 20th Anniversary of 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie' This movie definitely holds a special place in my heart and a special place in my entire childhood! And not only that, its also an absolute classic and an absolute masterpiece of cinema in animation history! I'm still surprised by the fact that they even got David Hasselhoff to be involved in the movie as a whole, and speaking of which the entire cast & crew that were involved in the production of this movie have all done a fantastic job! Anyways, Happy 20th Anniversary to one of the best movies of all time, 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie'!
If anyone is wondering what the album is that inspired Spongebob, it's "The Mollusk" by Ween. An incredible album Ween also did the "Loop De Loop" song as well
I was the exact same with hasslehoff. Had no idea who he was as a kid But that honestly makes the gag that bit better. It's SO left field, and SO bizzarre. It's just iconic xD

Honestly, the SpongeBob movie, the first one is really 1 of my favorites. I actually really do love this movie. And I have such good families with this movie a little bit. That is, you see when I was Hey, kid Spongebob has always been One of my favorite shows when I Was growing up? I remember I had two dvd's of the spongebob shows I had to share it with my cousin. And as for the movie itself, I really do enjoy it. I remember me and my cousin would always watch It. I really watch It. I remember 1/2 that me and my real father watched it and we thought it was good and honestly, as a teenager. I still love it, and as an adult, till this day, I even still love it more. I really do enjoy this one. It's honestly a really good. What do you guys think?Do you guys enjoy this movie
It’s funny you mention the Alexander graham bell and not getting it bc as a kid seeing this movie in America I had just learned about him in school and thought that joke was hilarious
Honestly, I like all 3. The first one is obviously the best, the second one is still really great, and the third one is ok. It’s only the fourth one that genuinely sucks
Yeah Sponge on the Run isn’t a masterpiece necessarily (after all, any movie that introduces Kamp Koral - and with the wrong spelling at that 😂- wasn’t gonna have it easy), but it’s still enjoyable if you can get past the commercialized aspects. Although obviously the first movie reigns supreme
Look, I love the first movie, but I will defend sponge out of water as long as I live. It’s not that bad. Ironically, the worst part of that movie was the stuff above water.
I mean, I'm not sure if it counts as a celebrity cameo either because he's been with the crew for a while, but the fish in the Salty Splatoon is voiced by Thomas F Wilson (AKA Biff from BTTF)
if i'm being honest, what made this movie so great as it was, was because all the characters actually felt in-character than just flanderizations of their personalities. I mean, sure, not every character in the movie got their time to shine and take the spotlight, but the ones that did still had some level of 3 dimensional complexities than just living their own personality. Sure, spongebob and patrick are still goofballs, but they go through an arc of starting off an adventure, naive to the dangers ahead, to feeling hopeless when they begin to doubt themselves for being too "kiddy", to having a boost in confidence when they think Mindy turned them into "Real men" with mustaches, to having that confidence stripped away from them when the bounty hunter reveals the truth and the cyclops kidnaps them, to having a moment of relief and contentment when they realize they truly did find neptunes crown before they died (and they died doing what they loved, before re-hydrating again), and then in the end, Spongebob and Patrick do face off against plankton by playing into the things that they enjoyed most = being a goofy goober. Squidward is still that cynical asshole, and he takes the opportunity to relax when Spongebob and Patrick are gone, but he's not just some selfish unlikeable douche, he actually catches onto what Plankton was doing, and he was willing to confront Plankton and inform King Neptune himself before being enslaved. Squidward's always been at odds with spongebob, simply because he finds him annoying, but the show sometimes presented Squidward as a friend of spongebob on occasion. Even if they didn't get along best, Squidward was still a friend to some capacity, and the movie continued that in a nuanced way. We didn't get much from other character, like Sandy, Larry, Mrs Puff, Pearl, etc, but then again it's a movie and there's only so much you can fit into an hour and a half of screentime. I think most of the charm comes from the fact that the movie was made in 2003, and was directed by Stephen Hillenberg while he was alive at the time. He passed away in 2018, and since then spongebob squarepants as a franchise was in decline because people get old, you can't keep the charms forever, and eventually the voice actors lose the touch too. It should've ended with a special after his death, but Nickelodeon is desperately trying to milk the franchise of the charm it has, without understanding what that charm actually is. And let me tell you, wacky as it is, it wasn't completely mindless.
john: hey guys lets go watch the 2004 spongebob movie. *2 hours later* john, george, and paul: good movie ringo: i thought it was alright. paul: no-one asked you ringo
I actually have thoughts on the scene where the Tear of the Goofy goober and Goofy goober rock happen The Tear of the Goofy Goober, and Rock Bob Squarepants: You know how in some movies a random life saving miracle happens? That tear is the embodiment of that miracle in this instance, and i mean Miracle, a magical phenomenon that makes the impossible possible, like making it rain life restoring water on the the dead people. Empowered by emotion and resolve, and the burning desire deep inside. Spongebob and patrick fully expect death, no survival. Yet, they realized they made part of their goal, they made it to Shell City, solidifying their resolve... but even in deaths door, they know they made it despite all odds, together, as the goofy goober man children they are. So they smile. And sing happily as it ends. But a spark emerges, both of them release a tear. As it runs down their bodies and merge together, magic is born. And as they finally pass. The Miracle enacts its purpose, and brings forth 'rain', reviving all who had died and those who just died. But thats a very small task in the face of Miracles in actuality. The remaining parts of the miracle clinged to Spongebob and Patrick until they could Spark them again. In the face of Adversity, Plankton and an army of their friends under mind control. The desire and will to save everything they love is there, all they need is a way to express it, and inact it. Let them ROCK! Dance! And SHRED! Simultaneously morphing reality and creating tools of magic from nothing.
its still horrible because logically it shouldve evaporated faster that the water leaving spongebob and patrick. they couldve at least move the tear down below the light to make it more believable

@@aguy2181 3rd movie is unfunny garbage
@@doge_sevens it at least has a more coherent and thought out plot than the first movie
@@aguy2181 the plot of the 3rd movie was to shill the baby show spinoff after stephen died
@@aguy2181what exactly are you on sir?
I think parody is mostly used in movies and shows like this to drop their own characters into that popular story, while in this movie especially it's homage moreso, which I've noticed is more based on inserting story elements and tropes into your own story, using the tropes organically rather than just blindly referencing it.
Actually, that big fish isn't an Angler Fish, its actually whats called a Frog Fish.
This is the true finale of SpongeBob.
There’s no true finale to spongebob
@@tracark2255 well technically this movie is the end of the SpongeBob timeline.
The perfect ending
No, Twitter, this isn't the canonical end to the franchise nor was it ever meant to be. Stephen didn't intend on this being the final SpongeBob product either, nor did he leave the show after the movie, he still worked on Season 4 as an Executive and so the movie being the finale is not true.
@@kenthetrainartist but the show continued after his death, which was both a bad idea, and completely against his wishes for the show to end after he died
Wait, did Nick seriously insult some fans of the movie?
@@complex2live Well he did voice his hatred towards in it in a very needless condescending tone, and made it sound like he thinks that all fans of it are deliberately disrespecting Hillenburg’s grave. He didn’t necessarily say that, but he said things that made it sound like he was implying it. Not helped by how he’s the same jerk who insulted all Frozen 2 fans.
Well, at least Nick said that Sponge out of water was way more similar to the og Spongebob than the series at the time
Did you notice that at the beginning SB Steps on Plankton & Dennis' Specific instruction was that he gets rid of SB by STEPPING on him. (Hence the spiked boot)
oh my god they were foreshadowing that happened right before that bit even happened.
i dont think it was done on purpose
@aguy2181 I'm pretty sure this is a form of what the writers generally call "forshadowing." Lol
I am tired of the sponge out of water disrespect
Same here
same, it’s also not terrible. I don’t understand 😭
Yeah spong out of water was good
I think it was because it was released during the dead era where the show was just straight up bad
@@warriorrealm9864 yeah when it released we were just coming off of the first half of season 9
I saw the thumbnail and just had to comment, I don't know who you are or what you upload, but this movie was the best thing to come out of the 2000's.
Sponge Out of Water is overhated asf
I just think it's alright. Not as bad as people say it is.
Most underrated by far
It’s because these overgrown kids think 2000s stuff is superior to other things
It's top tier for the Bubbles vs Seagull Crew rap alone
All the marketing being focused on only the last 20 minutes of the movie was pretty shitty though ngl.
I'd prefer if it just stayed 2D the whole way through.
I would love to hear when Spongbob does a real finally and adds some plot development that leads to this movie.
21:44 Fun Fact, the giant red fish that attempts to eat sponge bob and Patrick is actually based on a frog fish. It's a real fish and they in fact use tactics similar to an angler fish to lure their pray AKA food. Though they use a wiggly tissue of sorts on their body like a fishing poll almost as if frog fish are fisherman of sorts attempting to lore fish with bait.
they dont make their tongues fucking come to life and talk. theyre not pennywise
I love that the guy asks all the people at the bar to recited the punishment for blowing a bubble THEN asks who did it.
no, he asked who did it first
Not the only cartoon to reference alcohol. Regular show characters get drunk on soda and hot sauce/wings 😂😂
They should've made a scene of Princess Mindy thanking David Hasselhoff for bringing SpongeBob, Patrick, and King Neptune's crown back to Bikini Bottom.
insane how most of the popular spongebob memes are from this movie alone
Arguably one of the most important films in my life. Ween is one of, if not my favorite band EVER. Stephen Hillenburg was a massive fan, and their work up until 1999 was INCREDIBLY influential to Spongbob. As much if not MORESO than Marine Biology.
this movie didnt change your life
I am gonna be honest, i cried when spongebob and patrick were dehydrated
The SpongeBob Movie (the game) for ps2 was a cornerstone of my childhood. I still remember being enamored with the aesthetic of the trench and even having dreams about it. To this day it and the level from battle for bikini bottom where you traverse the insides of a giant monster are some of my favorite level aesthetics ever.
it has a better story than the movie
We had it good back then
For all you metal heads out there, that song that plays at the beginning of the Thug Tug scene is played by Motorhead, and its a paorady of their own song, "You Better Run", called "You Better Swim".
30:18 wait what. How the hell do you not know about Alexander graham bell as a grown ass man. There is nothing niche about him.
As a child I got that reference lol
I had some knowledge of the show (SpongeBob and Patrick are friends, Squidward is grumpy and doesn't like SpongeBob, but that was about it), and I immediately understood the dynamics and character traits and it made it super easy to get into the movie without having to ask a bunch of questions, and just enjoy the ride, and then I actually had a good idea going into the show of what to expect.
your parents are horrible. and your friend is horrible for not putting the show on first
24FramesOfNick war flashbacks
It's honestly wild that it has been 20 years since the release of the first SpongeBob movie, and I've had a lot of fond memories of watching this movie for the first time, and even during reruns on TV!
Also by the time I made this comment, I now realized that today is the 20th Anniversary of 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie'
This movie definitely holds a special place in my heart and a special place in my entire childhood!
I love the 1st/2nd movies so much my opinion the second one is better. (But It's cause I just watched it more😪)
36:20 I just realized, plankton has suddenly two eyes when looking thru the binoculars
you didnt just now realize
If anyone is wondering what the album is that inspired Spongebob, it's "The Mollusk" by Ween. An incredible album
Ween also did the "Loop De Loop" song as well
I was the exact same with hasslehoff. Had no idea who he was as a kid
But that honestly makes the gag that bit better. It's SO left field, and SO bizzarre. It's just iconic xD
Sponge Out of Water is NOT TERRIBLE, enough with the disrespect >:(
i have a list of reasons
My fave spongebob sound bite is when Patrick on the ghost ship said, lil lil italy, i mean sounded like thats what he said over and over again like that you aint my faaather, song
What do you guys think?Do you guys enjoy this movie
i dont enjoy it at all. the plot makes no sense
It’s funny you mention the Alexander graham bell and not getting it bc as a kid seeing this movie in America I had just learned about him in school and thought that joke was hilarious
I like them all except The Sandy Cheeks Movie. It's the biggest piece of dogshit

Although obviously the first movie reigns supreme

it's ok
@@theperfectbeing765 i dont agree but its a valid opinion i can respect i just dont like when people say its bad😭
It was barely hated, man.
if i'm being honest, what made this movie so great as it was, was because all the characters actually felt in-character than just flanderizations of their personalities.
**loud incorrect buzz**
i agree i think the only not terrible movie is sponge on the run
(not satire)
i always felt that the blurry background in the angler fish scene was supposed to signify murky water
Sponge Out Of Water is not terrible, yes it’s not the first movie (which is spectacular) but it’s still a very enjoyable movie to watch.

I actually have thoughts on the scene where the Tear of the Goofy goober and Goofy goober rock happen
The Tear of the Goofy Goober, and Rock Bob Squarepants:
You know how in some movies a random life saving miracle happens?
Sponge outta water was peak
