How To Mop Floors | Simple Cleaning Tutorial

  • This video is all about how to mop floors with the good old fashioned string mop.
    The string mop is my favorite mop to clean with! I feel like it does the best job at getting floors crisp and clean.
    There are 2 ways to use the string mop. You can go with a level 1 which is called damp mopping or you can go with a level 2 cleaning which is called slop mopping.
    The level 1 cleaning is a general maintenance mop. It is for floors that don't get very dirty and are mopped regularly. Floors with low traffic.
    Fill up a bucket with warm water, pour your favorite cleaning solution into the water, ring out the mop until it is mildly damp and use it to mop your floors. You are wiping off the floor the way you would wipe off your kitchen counters.
    The level 2 cleaning is for floors with high traffic and are very dirty. Maybe you have large dogs going in and out of your house or there is a layer of hair spray on the floor. This is when you want to go with the level 2 cleaning aka slop mopping.
    Fill your bucket up with hot water, pour your favorite cleaning solution into the water and drench your floors with the water. Use the mop to scrub the floors. Next, rinse and ring the mop out as dry as you can get it and use it to collect all the dirty water from the floors. You may need several buckets of water to complete this process.

I tried my best but then the teacher asked me if i ever did this, and i said no, shestarted mocking me and she cleaned in my place. No one ever teached me how to use cleaning tools like mops, brooms etc.

      I can relate! I didn't learn how to sweep until I was about 30. I'm nearly twice that old now and I'm just starting to feel confident about mopping. I didn't have a good example to follow at home, so it was mostly about figuring it out myself.
      That makes me sad to hear that your teacher mocked you - the very opposite of what a teacher should do! I have always been grateful to a 7th grade Home Economics teacher who taught me to wipe water spots off a counter top - something that would never have been done in my home, but made a big difference. I wish sweeping and mopping had been taught too.

    This video holds up even today. So much better than all these ridiculous systems that have been developed to make it easier to mop without having to touch the mop and ring it out. The string mop works better and is much cheaper. These "moping systems" will break down after a year or two or even sooner.

    I've never learnt how to mop or sweep the floor. I've tried doing it but after five minutes I get so tired.
    This video makes mopping look so easy and simple. Even after watching this video repeatedly and tried mopping many times and I'm still not able to do it properly. I can't figure where I'm going wrong.

    • @MinnesotaMomof8
      @MinnesotaMomof8 3 года назад +4

      I can relate! It takes muscles and practice to get used to it! I was over 30 when I finally mastered sweeping! I remember my arms getting SO tired at first - but after several months it was no longer a problem.
      About mopping - getting good at that has taken much longer because I had a large family and it was always hard to find a time to do it WHEN no one would be walking on it. Mopping uses the same muscles as sweeping, so once you've got those muscles, you can do either.

      Welcome to the channel! Typically, if floors are streaky it's for 1 of 3 reasons. 1, they are still dirty. 2, too much cleaning solution was used. 3, they were still a little too wet and not dried properly. A tip for drying you floors is to turn the ceiling fan on high while you are mopping.

    I use the Vileda Easy Wring mop. It's like a good old string mop, but the bucket has a pedal that spins the mop head to quickly and easily remove the excess water but still keep it wet enough, works great. You can also remove the head and throw it in the washing machine (I wash it with bleach to effectively remove stains and disinfect it at the same time).

Just a couple of suggestions, especially regarding floors that are not new and are high traffic areas (bathrooms especially): although you did mention cleaning along "the trim" how about a few more suggestions for cleaning along "the edges" of your tile floor and most of all, how about those corners where the dirt and the gunk piles up like little snow drifts (and the old wax for the non-waxless floors). #1. investing in a mob bucket with a wringer is well worth the investment.
    #2. I buy mop handles that allow for replacing the mop head. In this way, I can choose different weights of mop heads and have at least two mop heads on hand. One for initial cleaning and the first rinse and the second mop head of rinsing only. After the floors are done, I hang the mop heads on a clothes line, fence, or a saw horse and rinse throughly with the hose and allow them to dry outside.
    #3. If you think you are NOT going to end up either bending over or on your hands and knees with a clean cloth or sponge to get the baseboards clean after the mop left splashes or residue then perhaps you should inspect your baseboards again.

    This is what I do for really dirty floors (or anything else that can tolerate water). I put my water/solutions down (a couple of cups or more) and just cover the floor with the mop. When it's all soaking, leave it alone for about 20 minutes. The solution will dissolve most of the dirt without you having to scrub it over and over again. When you go back, just mop up the loose water and rinse if you want to. The tough stuff comes right up. I use this technique on my stove, counters, windowsills, floors, sinks, porches, etc. It's like letting your dishes soak in the sink for awhile. It gets out most of the ground-in dirt with just a few swipes.

    I think you may have answered this down below but not sure. I always thought mopping was a two phase job: first--you apply the pine sol as you demonstrate but then two you finish with a "clean rinse mop" to remove any other remaining residue from the floor. Will experiment with just phase one and use a small amount of pine sol and see how that works. Thanks for the video!

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  4 года назад +2

      Yes sir, you are referring to the slop mopping technique. The first phase leaves the floor really wet and allows the cleaner to loosen up the soil. You can even scrub the floor with a deck brush during this time. After that you dry the floor with phase two.

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  6 лет назад

      Ha! Now that's a long story.
      Basically, I kinda fell into it by accident. I was fired from a local air conditioning company for my reluctance of crawling under houses. My wife had started cleaning homes on the side to bring in a little extra income and since I was unemployed I figured I would give her a hand. Here we are 12 years later and I am still unemployed lol.
      What kept me in cleaning, was after doing some number crunching, I was making more money cleaning part time then when I was working full time at the air condition place! Or working full-time at any job for that matter.

Just a tip. Good night! - Rob

  • @danielclooney6248
    @danielclooney6248 4 года назад

    Using a mop always puzzled me. You start out with a clean damp mop. Then as you swipe back and forth you pick up the dirt. Then you keep swiping that dirt over the rest of the area until you refresh the mop with more water. Seems like you're just pushing damp dirt around. I'm serious......Please clarify for me.....Thanks. Love your videos.

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  4 года назад +2

      Yes the dirt gets in the mop like a wash cloth would wipe a counter. Then you rinse the mop the way you rinse a cloth and continue. Once the mop water gets to a certain level of dirtiness you pour it out and get a clean bucket of water. :)

      Not at all. You just have to make sure you clean your mop afterwards.

    Love your presentation. One suggestion for your next video. You might want to add the cleaning up after mopping step. Rinse and wring mop, clean bucket, store mop where it can dry out, and so forth.

    Hey buddy, another great video, informative and fun, you'd make a great teacher...a very hot one!!! Although not too sure about wringing out a mop by hand??? I always use a wringer inside the bucket, BUT it's all about personal preferences. Really enjoyed it, and I wish you and your business even more continued success. Maybe you could do a 'how to clean your pool' vid, wearing some speedos....I'd love to see that!!!....at least think about it!!! Take care buddy 😀👍

    Are you rinsing the mop periodically? If so, are you using the bucket (with soapy water)? Or are you rinsing in a utility tub or similar?
    Also, ok to wipe up excess water with a towel?

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  5 лет назад +1

      Yes sir, you rinse the mop periodically in the bucket. Once the water gets dirty you change the water and get a fresh bucket to continue mopping the floors.

    I kick it old school and use a shitload of towels (3 per area). I spray the floor with whatever solution (usually vinegar and lemon juice) and use one towel to spread it around, I use a second water-drenched towel to rinse and a third one to dry. I do all these with my feet, not on my hands and knees. Complicated? Perhaps? But the whole using one mop over and over again spreading junk all over the place just makes me cringe!

    do you use the mop to mop the whole area in one go or do we have to rince it in clean water and THEN dampen it in soap water?

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  5 лет назад

      Not sure what your question is. You just have to change the water as needed. Once the water becomes dirty you have to change it to continue mopping. If the floor is very dirty it might take 3-4 buckets of water to get it clean.

    Mr. Fuzzball's best role yet! At first he wasn't getting much dialog, but action is always a fine way to show off an actor's skills. That dreaming he did, wow, even Kevin Costner could not top that.
    Seriously, though, Mr. CWC Guy, I have 2 questions.
    1. With Method 2, when floors are very dirty, why no rinsing? I am curious.
    2. Not related, this is an awful thing to admit, but there is mold in a plastic shower stall [cough], uh, at the employee gym at work. Yeah -- that's where it is. What do you recommend? Thank you.
    Very much looking forward to the hardwood floor video!

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  7 лет назад +2

      Hey Miss Donna! Yes ma'am you do want to rinse the mop with method 2 that's why I mentioned you may need to go through several buckets of water. Rapidly spinning the mop is how you rinse it. Apart from that once the water gets dirty you have to change it out.
      As far as the mold problem is concerned. Mold is bacteria. Nothing kills bacteria better than bleach. I would say spray it thoroughly with bleach a few times, let it sit for a while, then just rinse away the bleach.

    • @DonnaAskins
      @DonnaAskins 7 лет назад

      Thanks Mr. CWC Guy! I meant, rinse the floor.
      Will do on the bleach. I mean, I will tell my employers about the bleach. I'm sure they will take care of it quickly and completely :D

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  7 лет назад

      Well you can't really rinse the floor. You continually rinse the mop and collect all the dirty water from the floor with it.That's why you have to ring it out as dry as possible over and over. All the dirt from the floor will be in that water you are collecting if you scrubbed and let that cleaner work. You can mop the floor more than once if that makes you feel better. Give it an initial mop, clean up all the dirty water, then go back and repeat the process again.

    • @yellowbird5411
      @yellowbird5411 6 лет назад

      Just to be a pain, no, mold is not bacteria. It is a completely different organism. And there are hundreds of different kinds of molds, and probably thousands of different kinds of bacteria.

    Recommendations for small apartments? I feel dust-fluffs and hair makes the job more difficult-- even after sweeping. Also, the mop can be unwieldy for small spaces: behind toilet-- is "by hand" the only option here?

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  4 года назад

      I always mop by hand behind a toilet. For small apartments I would buy a spray mop and use it. I demonstration that mop along with a DIY cleaning solution in my video "How To Clean Laminate Floors." I also demonstrate it in my video How To Clean Vinyl Plank Floors."

    Thomas, great videos sir 👍🏼 Serve just switched from laminate floors to ceramic tile all over. Should I ditch my microfibre flat spray mop and go back to string mop? Tiles seem ok with the flat mop, but maybe because they are still be new?

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  4 года назад +1

      @@the_judge_8262 A string mop will do better a getting down in the grout lines. That's really the only difference. Also, string mops are better for really dirty floors. Flat mops are more for maintenance type work.
