As a builder for 40 years..advice. Never rely on adhesive on a peak, run flashing under ridge vent over top of boot. It WILL leak if not.If you flash it ,it will last the life of the rubber boot. Great work on the cabin.

I was going to say the same thing. The best insurance especially since you're only a few inches from the ridge. Those boots are good and the lines around there are to trim it to the diameter needed.

Why install the pipe up inside the cabin, all that way up through the roof ? Was there no way place to install the stove near an exterior wall, with the flue pipe going out through a side wall, then up the outside of the cabin ?

    • @jimg2553

Right plus they just dont draw as good with a horizontal run as they do with a 100% vertical flu. Especially important when starting the fire, will smoke you out with a horizontal run until it gets drawing good.

I have had a chimney boot like that on my camp for about 6 years. Instead of pushing the boot down, and having that pucker, I was able to keep the boot higher on top, making a dome shape. Then I sealed around the top also. If you use the metal chimney boot, just run a short piece of flashing up under the ridge cap, then it shouldn’t leak. Great job!

    • @50Acres

YAY! You have an actual tea kettle! It's a WISE man to to be wary that far up in the air without a safety net, but it IS a beautiful view.
    Goetta:
    Ingredients
    1 lb Ground Pork
    1 lb Ground Beef
    8 cups Water
2-1/2 cups Steel Cut Oats or Organic Steel Cut Oats
    1 pinch Ground Pepper
    2 tsp Salt
    1 to 4 Bay Leaves *
    1 Onion large-sized, sliced*
    Instructions
In a large pot with a lid, boil the water. Add salt, pepper and oatmeal. Cover and let cook for two hours, stirring often.
Add the meat, onion and bay leaves, mix well. Cook for another hour, stirring often.
Remove bay leaf (leaves). Pour into bread pans- size of pan does not matter. Refrigerate overnight.
To serve: Slice the goetta and fry it until crispy or just until heated through. Goetta may be served with pancakes and eggs, on sandwiches, or in place of meat at dinner.
    Makes about 24 servings.

Congratulations on yet another milestone achieved with style, smart comments and good humour (I agree with you that punching holes in your roof need guts and faith !). I would dream to experience again that first arrival on a cold snowy day at the cabin knowing all I’ll need is to light up the fire and then just spend an evening not knowing whether to gaze at the snowstorm outside, the flames dancing in the stove, my book or my companions. I wish you to enjoy it time and again...you deserve it so much after so all that hard work. And working on completion will be so much easier now that you will be kept dry and warm in the cabin. Best wishes for the forthcoming holiday season. Keep us posted a little and enjoy a lot ! Pierre

I’ve used that rubber boot as well on my sauna bunkie. Same comments- metal roof company recommends boot, chimney co the steel collar. I saw another builder commented on the flashing. Good work as always.
A little trick to get on that roof easier.
Lash a 4x4 to the end of that folding extendable ladder.
Tie a long piece of rope to the 4x4.
Push the ladder with the 4x4 up over the ridgecap so it catches.
The 4x4 will act like a hook. Just go easy and you wont damage anything. If you sre worried about it, tape some foam to the 4x4 where it is going to contact.
For safety toss the rope over the roof and attach to something solid.
With the full length of the ladder on one side you should be able to walk up it instead of struggling with that first six feet.

Ouch! I hate the idea of making a hole in my roof for a chimney. I'd always choose a wall but sometimes, like in your case, it's not possible. I caught some more ... ahem ... exclamations that made it through editing. I love that you leaving them in. We all know, in the real world, they're as much a part of the job as anything : ) Well, they're part of my jobs anyway. Love the stove. It's gonna be a great centerpiece in a fantastic room.

This one has a damper built in. It works really well right now with fresh gaskets, I can put the fire our by closing it all the way.

Hey there Mike. Enjoyed the program today. That stove is really going to make your winter stays at the cabin a lot more enjoyable. I can't wait to see you fry your first bacon and eggs on it. You were giving me the willies up there on the roof. I am sure you felt them too. Take care and be safe. Vaughn

The fire looks incredible!!! My nerves would have been shot cutting through the insulation and roof. It must have killed you to cut into the beautiful wood on the ceiling, which the wood ceiling is awesome!!
Not sure if anyone has suggested, or maybe you know. To clean the soot on the glass, use a damp paper towel and the wood ash inside the stove scrub it on and wipe it off. No chemicals needed to keep a clean view of the fire!!

    • @50Acres
      @50Acres  4 года назад +4

Hi Charles, thank you for that tip on cleaning the glass I was wondering about a good way to do that. I did kill me to cut into the ceiling, and then through the roof, not a good feeling.

No problem Randy, one thing I did wrong was you should put the rubber boot on the diagonal if you use one. Also only use it with 3x stainless and make sure it's the 400+ degree red boot.

Use the metal flashing. Your chimney exits way up near the peak. Stick the upper edge of the metal flashing under the ridge cap. Then you can bend the right/left sides down over the nearest ridge in the metal roofing. Cawlk up each side real well.
