    He didn't mention which avacado he thought had the best flavor. Preferably in order. I like that he mentioned age and growth habit for each year and showed full tree from ground up so you could get a good look at the tree. All the tree looked good with the exception of the Gem which surprised me. This was one of best videos I have seen on avacado. I recently bought a Hass 3 ft tall in 5gl container. The leaves are a shiny deep green and 9 plus inches long. I love love avacados

    Excellent video. This is very informative. It is interesting that Gerardo like to plant his trees directly into clay soil (with proof that his trees are thriving). Does that only work when planting trees on a slope? Or will it also work for flat gardens?
    What do you think about the idea of planting trees in a mound when the natural soil is clay?

  • @MrLikeke

    Watering schedule is mentioned but not the volume of water. It would be great to know the volume of water according to the different ages of the tree. This is important since symptoms of over watering and under watering are similar. Thank you.

    • @caseG80
      @caseG80 5 лет назад +2

      Secret Squirrel with soils all being a little different as well as temperatures watering amounts are pretty much different for everyone. It even can be different on one side of are yards to another. I have clay soil and I water my avocado tree a lot they are heavy drinkers especially in hot dry climates. The micro sprinklers he shows probably put out 1-2 gallons a minute and he said 6-8 minutes 3 times a week so guess that anywhere from 6-16 gallons per watering. That amount sounds about right to me. Cheers

    I have seen a few videos all negative about planting in clay. I like what you are saying and would like to go forward with your recommendations. I am going to plant on a hillside similar to yours with clay soil in the Riverside area. I will be digging into the clay to put in the 30" 3" pipe. I am thinking to fortify the clay soil with gypsum and sand. Then plant tree in a 12" mound of E.B. Stone Palm and Citrus mix after leaving it in container for 6 months in Feb and setting up Micro-Sprinkler system and covering with mulch. Your thoughts?

    I have two avocado bushes that are over 10 years old, but only 2 years in the ground. They do not have a central trunk... kind of just splayed out from the ground. Is there any way to get them to be trees now or will they be okay to just let go the way they are going? They have bloomed heavily now, for the first time and i'm hoping for fruit. I was shocked to see all those blooms; while in the pots, they put out a few little clusters of blooms, but nothing like they're doing now; I guess they're happier than they were in pots, but I'd love to see some fruit form!

    how would you suggest i feed/fertilize my trees if they have a decent amount of mulch? do i have to move the mulch each time or can i assume that when being watered or when it rains, the feed will ultimately make its way to the roots of the tree? i always worry that food isn't getting down to the roots because of the thick layer of mulch.

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  4 года назад +2

      Thank you so much for the compliment PolyNZian
      ! MOST home gardeners would remove the mulch to ensure the fertilizer has made contact with the soil; however, it's another step that with proper watering will get to the soil level with 90%+ with the 1st thorough watering. And eventually, wood chips and fertilizer will all break down to the benefit of the surrounding tree(s). Another tip, I recommend feeding less amount of fertilizer and applying more frequently; like the 1st week of each month. Keep me posted on your growing successes!!!
      Charles :-)

    • @shanghaimuts
      @shanghaimuts 4 года назад +3

      @@IVOrganic thank you so much for that. at times i have moved the mulch and other times, not - just a thorough water as you mentioned. phew...
      you're not the first person to say that charles in regards to feeding. my dad is a firm believer of that. he just can't believe that we only feed trees three times a year. through experience, he much prefers smaller feeds but at much regular intervals. i will adopt the first week of each month though. i used to aim for around the 20th of each month for some odd reason.
      Feeding is not necessary for deciduous trees during dormancy, right?

    My name is Miguel Mariscal, my family and I live in hot, windy and cold Central Valley Bakersfield, California.
    We live in a 1/3 of acre property where we grow many different fruits and vegetables for our family to consume. We have about 50 total trees although our focus in our yard has been avocado trees. We have 12 trees of 6 different varieties that the age ranges between 2 and 5 years. We struggle to keep blooms to actually become fruits. This year we took soil and leaf analysis and most of the nutrients were with in range except for low calcium and magnesium. We applied gib for calcium but we haven’t been able to find anything to raise magnesium.
    We would appreciate your feedback.
    We have videos of what we grow here in our backyard please let us know how to send one your way. Thank you.

    This was a lot of great information. I have the same soil conditioner in my zone 8b The problem that I have is my avocado tree was planted inside my greenhouse. I have no source of air conditioning in there and we’re hitting 100° right now. When should I transplant my Mexi cola cold hearty avocado outside. It is suffering inside my greenhouse.

    Good job guys. Gerardo this is June from Facebook avocado so. Cal gardener group.
    When would you say is a good time to unstake a tree? Mine are in barrels and my newly potted Hass would be bent really hanging over the pot. It would be almost on the ground if in ground. I am thinking let the trunk harden up some. It's windy where I am. So when everyone else gets wind. It's bad here.

      June Van Putten you can steak the trees as long as needed just put two stakes one on each side direction of the wind and when you tie them leave some slack so it will be able to move in the breeze/wind this will cause the tree to strengthen in a safe manor. The green garden tape works well because it has give to it but depending on how hard the wind is bigger rope works tie knots to the steaks.cheers

    Do you need to graft another avocado to the plant I grew from seed to produce avocados? If I have two avocados that I grew from seed is that OK?

    • @richardmang2558
      @richardmang2558 4 года назад

      yes, graft a good scion onto your seedlings. One option for a scion is if you know someone that has an avocado that you like, take a branch from them. Otherwise you will wait for years before the seedlings produce fruit, which will most likely be of very poor quality.

    I planted my first bass avocado tree and I watched plenty of videos and they all said to mix in the fertilizer or all ingredients to Soil to plant the tree. It would hate for it to die, I need help. It is starting to make the leaves look sad. What can I do? I will for sure change my watering schedule and add Mulch will this help my tree survive ?

    DEPENDING ON YOU SOIL", I put compost and even cow manure and ash in with while planting avocado tree. You need to soften the bed for the roots to grow. Every time you water the surrounding soil and this thing called gravity will fill in those areas that the decaying of the compost. A mixture of local soil and compost, ash, manure would be ideal.
