I saw Julie speak at a CRFG conference. It was 2000; the Year of the Avocado. Subsequently, I spoke with her at the Green Scene in Fullerton and the Avocado Festival in La Habra Heights. She was very informative and generous with her knowledge. Thank you for posting this! Great questions and dialogue!
This is a great set of videos that covers several varieties of avocados. Keep up the great work Graft Man! Thank you, Master Julie Frink, for sharing your time and knowledge of avocados.
I pic my jim bacon in late fall. The fruit is elongated and the flesh is smooth. They do sometimes turn brown on the bottoms. My tree is 4 years old and 12 ft in height. I keep it pruned
Olá Aj nobre irmão! Adorei ver outro video contigo e a Senhora Julie. Ela é uma fonte de informação com respeito a abacates.Adorava ter o prazer de conhecer ela um dia e trocar informação e ideias! Um grande abraço.
I live in San Diego county, near Escondido, from what I can tell Bacon (mostly Mexican lineage) trees ripen a little bit before Fuerte, about the same as Zutano. Stewart probably ripens the same. Not my interview, but i would add that Pinkerton an A bloomer, needs a B polinizer or you may not get any fruit. Good job!
Hi- Great video! I was wondering what varieties she would recommend for the Bay Area. I live in Sunset Zone 10a, at about elevation 900 (lower Oakland hills). I have a Lamb in my yard that seems to be growing well (12’ tall) but I get very little production (2-3 avocados a year). I was thinking of a Sharwil (Type B) to help with pollination, but not sure if it’s too cold in the evenings for that variety. Thanks!
I appreciate the content you are sharing, and it is motivating as well. I took over the orchard that was once my parents and am replanting fruit trees. I live in La Habra Heights and have seen so many fine orchards disappear since the 1960's. Can you recommend any nurseries that have the rarer varieties of avocados? Louies in Riverside is good. Any others you know of?
Thanks for your kind words. Sad to hear about those orchards disappearing. The history of La Habra Heights is really interesting. What rare varieties are you looking for? I’m growing a few rare varieties myself and I go to your area sometimes. Email me if you’re interested ajsgarden123@gmail.com
hey, new name for the channel? nice change, next step a kick ass logo? (as reco, the video is super long, maybe if you have the time for it, why not add time stamps?
Great information, *however*, it should probably be strongly prefaced that this information is with respect to growing in California. A lot of these varieties will behave very differently when grown in other areas (e.g. Florida).
Hi AJ nice interview. Did you happen to pick her brain if she has any awareness of the popenoe collection beyond Nabal an Nimlioh. Those are the great missing links that would be awesome to track down!!!
Thanks Pat. I gave her a list of all the Popenoe varieties and she was really interested. She vaguely recalled a few, but not much. I agree, those varieties are very intriguing
Gem, Carmen, Gwen and Don Gillogly from everything I read. Those trees stay small. Gem & Don Gillogly supposed to be better than Hass. Gem, Carmen, Gwen, & Gillogly no alternate bearing, Gem is low oxidation. I have those trees on my property and many more other varieties of avocados. Gem, Carmen, Gwen and Don G. is prolific. Bear fruit at young age, low fruit drop. I am in zone 8b elevation 2000 Paso Robles Ca. I am planting more Gem Carmen Gwen & Gillogly just for your info. I will post video on my trees by end of Aug.
Mr. Aj, I live in a colder USDA zone 9b. Do u have any recommendations for any avocado trees for my yard. I have a Gem and a Mexicola Grande already. They made it thru last winter, with the coldest night being 25.9°. I heard miss Julie mention Stewart, I believe it's a Mexican variety and cold hardy. I never tasted the fruit. I am thinking of 2 more trees. Fuerte is probably to big of a tree .
This video is gold. So much knowledge & passion . Really great information.
Great Interview. She's a walking Avocado encyclopaedia!

That’s good info. Thanks. Have you ever let bacon hang on the tree until February?
@@AJTheGraftMan My Bacon is too young to bear but some of my neighbors have Bacons. They start in Late November and end in February.

I am planning on planting 5 different avocado trees.... Question...Do I have to buy them in pairs???
Carpinteria my home town. We grew Leucadia, my favorite. But I'm afraid it's extinct.
I've never heard of that variety. Sounds interesting.
Julie what varieties would you recommend besides the Simmonds, Lula, Pollock, Wilson & Choquette we're growing in Barbados in the Caribbean?
hey, new name for the channel? nice change, next step a kick ass logo? (as reco, the video is super long, maybe if you have the time for it, why not add time stamps?
Thanks! Yes coming in the future. I added time stamps as well. Thanks for the feedback
So how does this work?
Does the change in seedlings come from one generation to the next
or are seeds from the same season coming up different?
They’re like kids. Similar to their parents but not exactly.
What about Gem avocado, any comments on it. Appreciate it very much.

Where can I buy different variety of avocados to taste. Thanks.
Can you buy a variety that does not grow so big and graft Hass on it for the flavor? What are other brands that are closest to Hass flavor?

Good question. I’m thinking Bacon and Reed (cold hardier than many people think)
Obrigado. I think I might try Reed. I don't like Bacon, but my wife does.
How to prune a 30 ft tree with out killing it? Still producing ftujt everywhere yesr
Good video, what about the (GEM) avocado profile??🙄🙄
I have tried to find the GEM avocado in Kenya but it’s not here😢
