Premier Guitar met with Mike Cooley, Patterson Hood, and Jay Gonzalez of the Drive-By Truckers before their window-rattling show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Sharing a love of the odd, these players rely on unusual instruments to create their genre-blending sound.
Drive-By Truckers cofounder Mike Cooley tours with a gritty boat of oddball beauties. First up is a stock Epiphone Flying V that has suffered some damage, but was glued back together.
Cooley describes his Gibson Corvus I as a “bad idea from the ’80s,” but he keeps rocking it and has retrofitted it with a P-90 pickup.
Two axes made by Baxendale Guitars of Athens, Georgia, round out Cooley’s collection. The warped T-style electric sports a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge position and a Duncan Seth Lover SH-55 at the neck.

I am big Fan of that Band, saw them twice in germany. Cooley's Songs gives me everything and he is one of my favorite Songwriters.
They're so underrated it's a shame.
But they never give up and played thousends Shows and never disappoint.
Love them ❤
Been seeing Drive by since the early days in Athens and Atlanta Ga such a great band
I met all three of these legends 😊
DBT are such great guys I really think they are at their peak now too !
Very cool. You're kicking ass with these lately. DBT and Lucinda Williams in the same month. If you did a rig rundown with The Replacements you'd be my hero.
Been waiting ages for a rundown for this band! Thanks for sending Bohlinger!
Drive by Truckers are awesome live! Seen 'em twice already
I see them live in November
John Awesome rig rundowns!!
Need to get that quiff under control John - it looks like it's got a life of its own!
The old wooden bench seating reming me of an old Baptist church. LOL Nice plain jane set-up that works :-)
That's what we call the Ryman Auditorium.
It was originally a Methodist church back in the 1800's and early 1900's.
Big fan of Bohlinger. One cool cat. Check out his quiff at 7.35. I would kill for that.
I didn’t know that there was other rigs, besides metal and punk. The Drive-By Truckers are one of my favorite bands ever…. I’m almost scared to look behind the curtain. Specially, Cooley, he is the wizard of OZZSAWSOMENESS
ace ventura does a nice run down here.
+J Macdonald yeah, He's getting all touchy grabby with Patteron's guitars. Paws off Bitch!!
pro trick : watch series at Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Abdullah Magnus Yea, I have been watching on flixzone for months myself :D
Nahhh dude looks like Walton Goggins
Tim Kasher used to have a Silver Corvus II until he smashed it in Dallas. The Gibson Corvus is probably the most radical design Gibson made.
I didn’t know he smashed it! That makes me sad because I love those guitars
@@jackbaradog He played it in Nashville in 2018.
You don't just take somebody's guitar O.o
Simple and sweet. Dig it guys.
That is anything but q simple rig
I swear by the space echo, and the only other delay I like is some slap back.
The weirdo Gibson is called a Corvis if I remember right. Friend had one a long time ago.
you are right, i love those things, many gibson people think they look weird and ugly from what i understand
+nitemareman1 I fn want one!! lol
@@880HelioProductions I love my Corvus. I didn't like the stock pickups but other than that, nothing wrong with it. Some of us don't want the typical Strat or whatever guitar.
I wish one of these guys had busted out with an Ibanez or Jackson and talked about how important the guitar was to their sound......Then back to the train of vintage or offbeat expected guitars. A little variety.
Does Jay Gonzalez remind anyone else of Booger from Revenge of the Nerds? Also...DBT rock hard. Legit.
Haaaa!!! Kinda. Only less nerdy. More stoner like.
yeah
do muse please :) Premier Guitar
This guy always touches and grabs peoples gear without asking.. I wouldn't like that
***** Exactly, I don't understand why people assume they don't get consent first. It's a show about people's gear. It's pretty much common sense that they would request to show the gear close up.
I was cringing as soon as he started reaching for it - regardless of prior discussions, John needs to establish with the audience that he's got consent by simply saying "you mind if I pull that out to show RUclips?"
Compared to the new PG rundown guy, at least John knows a thing or two. He doesn't often just go grab someone's stuff, in all the videos I've seen of his, it's only been something that happened a few times. The damn new guy picks up every instrument like a moron.
Colin Christensen
That's what she said?
LMAO
come on man, that old ampeg and you dont cover it? thats just teasing
How long ago???
does anyone know the song played in the sound check?
Used To Be A Cop
Used to be a cop
Boomhauer!
mike needs the zippo gibson as well
What's up with the church pews in that venue?
That's the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. It's called the Church of Country Music because it was a venue that was home to performances by Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Elvis, and countless other musicians. It was formerly called the Grand Ole Opry House and Union Gospel Tabernacle-it's a 2,362-seat live performance venue, and is best known as the home of the WSM Grand Ole Opry radio show from 1943 to 1974.
It was originally a Methodist church back in the 1800's and early 1900's.
Bass Player?
+Voxshades1 Jimbo Hart
No one cares about the bass player. Sadly.
@@emmettredding1163nah, his name is Matt Patton
John, life is in 3-D. Consider some hair jelly.
I love this band but they don't need three guitar players.
Gonzalez plays a lot of keyboards and some pedal steel stuff, I get what you're saying though, although didn't they used to cover some Skynryd stuff?
Yes they do
I agree, I liked when Jason Isbell was in the band playing as a third guitar player but it is unnecessary, hey man I'm just curious is Ash short for something, the reason I ask is my name is ashby and I have literally never meant someone with that Same name so I was wondering if that was what ash was short for
@@ARoll925 Ash is the evil dead character
Yes they do. There aren’t many bands with 3 guitar players. This is a signature that goes back to the JI days
