This has been up for over 3 years and not 1 thumbs down so far. That's fucking awesome! Set List: 00:00 Marry Me 05:42 Decoration Day 12:23 Sink Hole 15:45 Interview 17:50 Danko/Manuel 23:55 Introduction/ The Living Budda 32:06 My Sweet Annette 36:20 Interview 39:24 Uncle Frank 44:25 People Who Died (Jim Carroll cover)
I'm happy that Isbell has gotten his life together and found a lot of success, but I miss this era of him musically. I prefer his raw, rock-oriented sound over what he does now (which isn't to say that I don't his enjoy his more recent work as well).
Had to have this to get that kinda thing imo. Youth and all the factors are on display but far from anything than greatness. Been into the truckers magic rock show since 2001-2002. I do think after countless shows live I really appreciate their albums and the clean sound quality vs the super loud ,raw ,and distortion level. Such a great yet underrated band and dedicated cult following. Representing Athens, Ga and the southern thing.
This is my sound man Ricks favorite band. Bout 10 years older. Neil Young 70s guy. Huge influence he’s been on us. He won trivia tickets to see the Truckers tape on Austin City Limits. He’s turned me on to the realist music of my life.
I’m def ready to hit that town. We should all meet for South by Southwest some day. My oldest friend Brett and his wife come down from the East to go yearly. I never been. Dying to go back to Austin .
Look at how young Cooley and Patterson look! Jason was only 24 or so at this point, and it's pre-Shonna. I saw this iteration of DBT at the Troubadour in L.A. in the summer of 2003 and was hooked instantly. I loved SRO and DD, but wasn't sure if they were any good live. Needless to say, I've seen them every time since they hit L.A. and just saw them a month ago. Yes, they kicked ass! America's mightiest band for 15 years running!
I know I’m a few years behind on this post but Isbell was a mess in his early 20’s when he joined a band like DBT. He also helped them make the 2 best albums they’ve ever put out. Even a mess he could play guitar like an animal. I appreciate the beginnings. I think he would even admit that he needed his DBT days. Cooley and Hood are doing just fine. Just where they all wanna be.
Agree love DBT but the guitar and harmonies (Hood) sounds awful. Think he was probably totally wasted. Isbell is a class act here even when I would presume wasted. I think he's always a stellar guitarist
Jason Isbell is never jaw-dropping bad! Time and place. His music has evolved and his clean sound is indicative of who he now is. However, if he tried that with DBT, it wouldn't have worked. I think the rawness of this is perfect for the band and him. Writing...check. Guitar work....on point.
I don’t think you understand the whole pastiche surrounding this iteration of his songs. “Decoration Day” is probably the best example in this set. You’re constantly painting a picture with music performance, creating a vibe on which the words can hang and tell the story. In this case, you have the tale of a southerner describing a family feud unfolding over two generations minimum. Is this southerner drunk when he tells you the story? In this case, certainly. The question is if the performance is skewed that way via method acting. A great example is Tom Waits in his 70’s Lounge-Singer era. “Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis” is a good reference. Overall, you hear the true rural south being portrayed here in tone - but have to question if it’s art imitating life, or vice versa. Method acting brings these nuances forward at first - but it’s not long before you’re living as the character. We’re all aware of the alcoholism that plagued him until he straightened up, but it’s easy to discern how it could have originated. He’s an artist through and through.
Best lineup this band will ever have:) Marry Me is a great opener. Seeing Jason do his thing is awesome but DBT is where he belongs. they haven't been close to being the same since he left. John Neff did a good job when he came back but since he left the band is nowhere as right.
Agreed! They blew the doors off the El Rey last month (2/9/18). This is also the most durable version of the band too. All current members have been there since 2012.
Unequivocally the best rock band in the world during this run....the music and the songwriting just speaks for itself.
Early 2000's DBT were the saviors of Rock n Roll..

No one sounds like these guys. So rockin' raw. Great vocals, songwriting. I love tornadoes and women whiskey.
Two SG's and a Gretsch on the last songs. What a fucking sound. Wall of noise baby. I fucking love it.!!

This was peak DBT
This whole thing is perfect. Perfecr setlist. Sloppy. Drunk blown out i listen to this every day
Jason is LOADED. I'm surprised he stayed on his feet.
I love this raw ass sound in a small ass club!! Wasn't getting along with each other right here, STILL badass!!! Miss that lineup ...
Isbell and Cooly are awesome together.
Spectacular group when Isbell was there. Still a fine group now: American Band.
Earl on bass! This is when i saw them and looked at my buddy Phil Friday and said "will travel"...as in will road trip to see this God Damn band!!
What a god damn classic show.

Jason Isbel's voice on Decoration Day, is like a good whisky
indeed!
Great seeing Cooley and Jason play off one another

Legendary guitar lineup.
They covered "People who Died" by Jim Carroll. Amazing!
they have been covering the Ramones "KKK Took my baby away" too
This just made my day. Thanks for posting
thank you! goddam rock and roll!
Some much spilt beer and Jack Daniels... what a time
This was when they were on a (so called) purple patch. My first gig was just under a year later when Shonna took over....unforgettable.
First song they sound just like The Stones!

Isbell and Shonna were already acquainted
Man Isbell was messed up here. Getting kicked out of DBT was the best thing that ever happened to him.

You're right but old truckers is nasty
glad Jason cleaned up his act.
Yeah, he's jaw-droppingly bad here. Hard to believe he's the same dude who played one of the very best shows I've ever seen a year ago.
Agree love DBT but the guitar and harmonies (Hood) sounds awful. Think he was probably totally wasted. Isbell is a class act here even when I would presume wasted. I think he's always a stellar guitarist

thanks for posting!!!!!
WOW!!!! Thanks for thisd,
Jeez thank god Isbell got sober.
I like this but in some ways this is sad. Jason Isbell has really risen from the dead if you look him now.
Sami Supias glorious not sad. Happy ending to the story
Simply put it took this to get that.. hope you all get this what I'm trying to say. This is ridiculous so good
♥️♥️♥️♥️
Damn Cooley, please put the slide away.
At the very beginning, I thought they were covering the Eagles. But this is way better.
I know ive always thought the start of marry me sounds like the eagles already gone
@@tankthefrank100 Yep, thats exactly what I was hearing!

The present line up is as tight as DBT has ever been. Said with all due respect to Isbell.
Who ever posted this should write "The bird Dog" on bass. Then everyone would know the est date of the recording.
This European tour in late 2003 was Earl's last with DBT.
So does Isbell play lead guitar on most of the album cuts during his time with the band?
....can we say heyday?
DBT are better now than ever. Check em out.
Without Jason Isbell? I don't think so. But that's only my opinion like the southern men say.
Agreed! They blew the doors off the El Rey last month (2/9/18). This is also the most durable version of the band too. All current members have been there since 2012.
Jason’s a little high in the mix, eh?
That is one drunk and bloated J.I.
