In part 2 we try to get the old 351 Windsor running and start the disassembly process. Unfortunately we run into some hurdles along the way.
Don't know exactly what you're doing? You will learn. I did. And didn't know exactly what I was dong either when I first started on mine. I knew several people who did know what they were doing and I depended on them a lot, along with a lot of reading Mustang Monthly magazines. And if you wanted to take the time I'll bet you could rebuild that engine. I have rebuilt 5 mustangs during the years and each one took me approximately 4 years each including body, paint, engine rebuild, suspension, and transmission. I'm presently in the middle of a 1970 Mach 1 rebuild for the 2nd time. I even learned to paint them myself. I wasn't totally happy with the paint jobs I paid somebody else to do. Good luck! You are going to have a beautiful car when you are done!
Thanks for the kind words! I definitely agree that we will figure out what we need to figure out. We also have some really knowledgeable people around us to help, especially with the body work that is coming. But just like everything else we have learned we just kinda dive head first into it and then work our way backwards. So far thats worked really well with everything else! And if we get really stuck maybe we can ask you guys some questions on here. Definitely a lot knowledgable people on here.
I dont mean to be mean but you guys shouldn't be touching this car. You e already made a laundrey list of mistakes and you're on your way to destroying this car. Hand it over to someone who knows what they have and more importantly know what they are doing

Dude...you should have just pulled out all the spark plugs out of there, fill up the cylinders with a little bit of Marvel's Mystery Oil and let that percolate for about a week. You could have turned it over a few times with the plugs out and pump any shit out of the motor. Put the plug back in got yourself an external fuel source such as like the gas can, and fired that baby up without pulling that motor out. But I'm a Chevy guy so it really don't matter to me. :-)

If you have a higher knowledge base on a subject maybe offer up some helpful information to the people around you who don’t know as much as you.

The new 351 will be fine. You can rebuild the orig later. Atleast its drivable in the meantime.
please tell me you checked the ignition switch before yanking that motor. These cars are known for that....they will just click and click esp after sitting for a long time...I have seen this EXACT situation play out with a 70 Mach 1 3 speed car. It had been sitting 30 plus years. Guy thought it was seized and changed out the ignition.... boom started right up
79 351W performance isn't even close to the 69 351 engine
Only using the short block. Not the entire engine. Heads, manifold, carbs everything else will be swapped onto the other block.
@@rangeroadmoto First of all I love your car. Believe the 79 W will have a larger deck height on the block then the 69 block, and those 69 heads are the 190cc ones that you would want to use...Breathe much better than the 79 smog heads. Heads are reasonable to have redone at a good machine shop.
I would check out all that stuff to make sure everything is going to fit ok mixing the two. I have a 69 Mach 1 and kept it all 69 except I bought the Edelbrock 2.02 top end kit with cam and have no regrets. Most of the mustang forums can answer these questions for sure.
Old fords can be tricky on what transfers over to the others ..especially water pumps and distributors. 351 dist. is different than 302 even though they are both SBF (small block ford) for example. When you get done you will be the guru. Have fun!
Thanks so much for all that info! We realized the differences when we pulled the heads off the 79 engine, completely different piston shape and like you said compression. So I think we are going to look at rebuilding the 69 block, pulled the heads off that but it’s still seized even after soaking for a couple weeks in ATF. Gonna get some help from a friend of mine who is an engine builder and go from there.
Sovdi Media dont be concerned about seized pistons, use a mix of ATF, brake fluid and use a hammer to punch out the pistons
The best you can do is buy new pistons and clean up cylinder bores, if they aren’t scratched then you are good to go. Also now you have the engine disassembled you should change the camshaft, you don’t know what’s the story behind your current camshaft
@@josehf34 Okay We will try the brake fluid atf mix and punch. And yeah we will definitely take a look at the cam while its all stripped down. Thanks for the advice!
Pull the pistons and crank and use a honeing stone to clean up those cylinders. New bearings and you original motor is good to go. You can patch those fenders and probably blend the paint to match. It has just the right amount of patina to be cool as is in my book. Really cool find!
It would be cheaper to buy tools and do it yourself theres plenty of videos for honing and lapping valves still need a torque wrench and ring compressor. That 79 Windsor would have a lot less horsepower.
You guys don’t have any clue what they doing. Just go to work and save your money and have that motor rebuild by a high level engine restorer . That car is a 69,000 dollar car . And the price is just dropping every time you guys touch it .
79 351w has a 50 up difference compared to the 69 they can probably get some of that back with the 4 v heads why didn't they re-ring the motor with bearings for 300.00

I always thought that it was the Cleveland 351 that was put into the performance models, be it Torino, Mustang, Cyclone, et al...
jimchik yup you are correct. But Ford had two factories, one in Cleveland and one in Windsor, Ontario up here in Canada. So this car came out of the Windsor plant.
Sovdi Media Ok. Thanks for that. Also, wasn’t the Cleveland variant the more sought after, maybe because it was the big block variant?
The Cleveland did make more power, (google told me) it has bigger ports and valves with higher revving. Definitely not a mustang expert though! Just learning as I go.
I hope when you rebuilt it you got rid of the valve train and opted for standard good retainers and throw the rotaters in the garbage. Go with hyper pistons and an aftermarket oil pump and new better grind of camshaft to wake up that old Windsor.
Danny from counting cars could make that Mach 1 into a dream machine……. For around $75,000 😂

The algorithm brought me here. Good job on following a passion, I'm sure an original as possible restoration will be on the cards later.
I started by trying to rebuild an old '71 Honda CB500F... figured it'd be easier to start there if I ever wanted to rebuild an old car. I learned a lot from that experience but the most important lesson was that I needed a really good paying job cause I sure as @#$ didn't want to rebuild anything else ever and from then on would need to pay someone else to do it for me! 😂
I know you don't care but I can't watch you mess up this car. You are making me nervous. If you don't have the money to restore it you should have never bought it.

Hey friends, I’m guessing maybe you came down to the comments to share your thoughts on how we are doing something or everything wrong. And that’s fine, it is RUclips after all. But If you have vast knowledge on the subject why not spread some of that knowledge around. I know we made some mistakes. That being said we are currently looking into rebuild costs of the original short block as we learned the compression in the 79 block was a lot lower different than originally thought. And for that we are looking around for some more experienced people to help us learn and work through this experience. The goal here is to have a running car that the whole family (including the original owner) can enjoy.
NO SHIT, SO MUCH FOR A MATCHING NUMBERS CAR. THE VALUE JUST FELL THROUGH THE FLOOR. aT LEAST KEEP THE ORIGINAL MOTOR AND REBUILD IT WHEN YOU CAN AND PUT IT BACK IN THE CAR .
i had a 1974 cutlass supreme the auto blue inserts on carpet and original window sticker. drove it all around only 2600 made that year with that combination very rare wish i would have kept it original but i put in a bigger edelbrock carb and raced up and down the town beat the wheels off a lot of mustangs HAHA! but this is a special car keep it original and it will do u fine very good video its nice to see young men doing things with there time instead of drugs or sitting on the computer!!

I think you're right, I think thats what we are gonna do right off the bat. Definitely not changing the colour, we have a retired body man who is going to be doing the paint and body work.

In December of 1969 I bought a 1970 Mach I, 351C with a 4 barrel, dual exhaust, automatic. Three years later, I bought a 1973 Mach I equipped the same way. Videos like this make me smile when I see the thrill is still there, dead mice and all.

I'm not trying to be offensive,not in any way whatsoever, but, you have no panel repair experience,no paint experience and very little mechanical experience. Do yourself and the car a favor and buy some cheap pile of crap and learn on it. All us old timers did it that way. There's no way on Gods green Earth that I would have touched a car like that when I was at your experience level.
Don't be pig headed and rush this thing out,all you will get is hate from everyone. If you don't want to learn on some pile of crap, then either save up and get someone else to do it, or sell it to someone who knows what they're doing. My God, common sense should have already kicked in, just learn on something else for the love of all things holy.
kik Urass all valid points mr kick your ass and maybe some of your concerns I can put at ease... short of telling you we are taking the car back to the barn. Body work, panel fitting, and painting we have some one lined up to help us. He is a retired body man and knows his stuff, so he’ll be doing that and offering up and opportunity for us to learn some stuff. As for the engine rebuild stuff we are currently looking into having professional help restoring the numbers matching short block and heads.
@@rangeroadmoto Thank goodness, I honestly was very concerned, not just for the car. Think about this for a second, it costs an awful lot of money to restore a car the right way, but it costs at least twice as much when you do it wrong. You will be saving yourself a lot of money and heartache by getting professionals involved.
Please don't be put off by what myself and others have said, just learn on something worthless, in the end, when you have developed the required skills you will save a fortune and be able to wear the badge of honor that says 'I did it myself'.
It did spin what looked like a full or almost full rotation in part one maybe a stuck valve.
I think it was, some of the valves really didn’t wanna come out
If you don't have the money to rebuild it, how did you have the money to buy it? Or...did you spend all your rebuild money buying it? I know how that goes. Want to sell it? What's it gonna take to get me into that car today?

DONT GET RID OF YOUR STOCK ENGINE! The 1979 351 you guys got is miles different than the '69 engine,but it will get the car moving. '69 engine is a 4V(one year only engine),it has much more compression and bigger valves and ports than the '79 engine.
I'm an old guy and once owned a '69 Mach 1 much like yours but a 4 spd. I sold it in 1983 and don't regret it...
Oh we definitely are definitely not getting rid of the stock engine. It will be rebuilt later for sure! And we are moving the mustang heads over onto the other block for now. From
What I understood (correct me if I’m wrong) the majority of the difference in the two engines was in the heads and the blocks were very very close to identical?

C'mon guys, you gotta paint it in the original color.Everybody and their grandma has a red,blue or white Mustang.Get a production order if possible,I doubt there were many made in that color.
Don't worry! its going to be painted back to original colour, and we got some professional help for that part of the job
Sell it and buy a new hellcat! This will never be as reliable and the new ones even have apple auto. DM me if you need a dealer hookup I used to detail for my dad's friends dealership
