Hotel Mario at the end of the day is just a boring game at its worst, consisting of nothing but closing doors. Sonic Genesis is a terrible port that barely runs and changes the framerate on the fly, so I can see why you would find it far more frustrating.
Functionally? Probably Free Riders. Objectively? Probably Labyrinth or Blast. Creatively? Probably Forces. Overall? Probably All of it. Can't wait for the next one.

Free Riders makes me so upset because it single-handedly killed the Riders series, and we’ll never see the Babylon Rogues in a main plot of a Sonic game again.
They were never part of the main games, but I do get what you mean. It's a shame Riders died out because of Free Riders, and the rise of the "Racing" series.

The Genesis Version of Spinball is the harder version & to be fair neither Spinball was good. I beat the Gamegear version on GameCube, although never could get past the 1st Level of the Genesis version when playing Mega Collection.
I've heard that the music in Sonic Chronicles wasn't always that bad, but for some reason, near the end of development, they lost all of the music files and had to start over in a very short amount of time. This caused them to have to use a horrible sound engine and end up with what we have today.
I think the big problem of Chronicles is the everything is touch, and you have to do these little mini games everytime you use a special move, and sometimes it makes them stronger if you get it perfect, other moves it completely wastes your turn if you don't. It was just kinda tedious, it's like they copied Super Mario RPG but didn't realize that touch controls are just kinda annoying in general.
For me they were the best part of the game, just hammering the touch screen with the stylus. The absolute worst part is the subtitles to other languages: yellow, barely readable, over the cutscene.

My biggest issue with Sonic Advance is the screen size is already too small causing a bunch of enemies hitting you because you can’t react fast enough and a bunch of leaps of faith, so I can only imagine how horrid playing with 3/5ths of the screen
I remember playing the first Sonic Advance game growing up and boy it was a pain to play at times, the screen size made it quite difficult to see what was next in front of you and what you said about the "leaps of faith" is 100% true. I really liked the game and it was fun for the time, but it really had issues and being made as a GBA game didn't help much in some areas.
If you guys had trouble with the screen size, wait until you hear what playing in 2002 was like. Original GBA didn't have a lit screen so you could barely make out anything in the game & every game on GBA was like that at 1st. The SP was a godsend for GBA Games!
Eh, I don't think Chronicles is that bad to be honest. I haven't touched it since I 100% twice over a decade ago, sure, but I still think it had a lot of heart put into it with the character interactions and the ambitious story it wanted to tell. The devs, while being the B team at BioWare, clearly cared and studied the Sonic universe enough to write the story and character moments you see throughout the game, and I feel they got the personalities of all characters down. The models have huge eyes so that you are able to see them from afar, btw. They were made with the DS screen and the perspective in mind. They aren't ugly because "lmao they suck". All in all I need to revisit it at some point, and the music is kinda bad, but I don't think it deserves as much hate as it gets. Also fuck Ken Penders.
Honestly, it's kinda wild but I did enjoy it when I played it on my ds. The story wasn't bad as I liked the galaxy travels the cast did as eggman plotted but I genuinely think that if the game wasn't in such a half-baked state our opinion wouldn't be so uncommon. But alas can't make a good sonic game with some inconvenience along the way.

A shame Shade is now locked in lawsuit limbo. She had potential to be a compelling character as well as some more development for Knuckles possibly if this series took off.
The thing that always got me about the game is that, even though it wasn’t perfext by any means whatsoever, it still had like the skeleton of a good game in there. I feel like a sequel could’ve been made to iron out the issues the game had and it could’ve been better, but of course, anytime an Echidna that isn’t Knuckles shows up, Ken Penders flips out about someone stealing one of his OCs, and Sega just didn’t wanna deal with it, it seems- not that i blame them. Still, it’s a shame that this is like… the only Sonic RPG we’ve gotten. That’s an interesting route to take that i feel Sonic Team might not explore again.
You know you can at least give Sonic 06 the excuse that they tried even amidst the troubled development and there are some great ideas there along with good music unlike Sonic Genesis which just butchered a classic and didn’t add enough new shit. Unrelated to the topic but talking about good Sonic games, I’m kind of surprised nobody has tried to remake Ultimate Flash Sonic as either a rom hack or Sonic Mania mod.

so i know this is defiantly a controversial take but i wish Sonic 06 got a remake. i think Sonic 06 has untapped potential to be a good sonic game but it seems whenever something doesn't work Sega never tries it again to make it better. i think the open world of Soleanna has a lot of potential to be explored further, i liked that each character played differently and could be expanded upon. i think a remake could do the game justice. remove the horrible bugs, update the graphics, add more interesting side quests, power ups, the ability to go super i any stage after a certain point, and defiantly change the plot especially the ending. i feel like it could work
I thought that Chronicles was the shit back when I was 6 years old. I remember playing the game, getting stuck on a stage, and randomly losing the game. And the fact that I don't even remember almost the whole game is... wierd. But at the same time, I was 6.
You almost gave me a heart attack when you showed Sonic Spinball, only to mention the handheld version. I love the genesis version for all its worth, it's not some amazing game, it's just pinball based around controlling your character.

When I was young I loved Sonic Chronicles and played it religiously. Which might have been because it was the only game I had which allowed me to play as Shadow in a "story-based Sonic game" Also the story was lowkey a banger and the new characters were hella cool, you can really tell the devs loved Sonic with how they characterized everyone and even down to their moves. It's a shame it was so under polished and rushed, plus Pender's later in the future ruining things. It really could have been great.
you got something wrong with sonic x, the rings actually do something, collecting them all in a stage gives you one of the chaos emeralds and if you get all of them and jump in the air nothing happens as super sonic doesnt exist

Sonic Forces isn't a bad game (its definitely not a good one though), it was just subject to one of the worst perfect storms possible. It released just after Sonic Mania, arguably the best classic sonic game of all-time so people got hyped up for a good sonic game. Instead we got an extremely short, linear and boring boost game that's at the very least polished.
Free Riders is one of the most frustrating video games I’ve ever played. When you spend over an HOUR on the freaking tutorial in a RACING GAME, you know your game has problems.

I was one of the few who loved Chronicles and I'm still holding a grudge against Penders. The plot was good, the game wasn't easy but not frustratingly hard and the dialogue options were interesting.
Well, at least Sonic Free Riders got some sort of redemption when some guy decided to remove the Kinect controls from the game. I hope some fans make projects to redeem some of these other bad games like Sonic Chronicles.

I never heard someone saying that Spinball 8 bit is hard, I have it the master System version and I finished on the same day, but I never tried the game gear port so maybe it's a little different. Fun fact: Master System Sonic Spinball (1995) was the second last game SEGA released for the Master System but the console had games until 1997, all of them being not popular in nether USA or Japan
Here's something interesting. In Sonic Mania when you get the Lightning Shield and press X or Y or 🟪, depending on the console, on Debug Mode, you don't see the shield itself, but when you double jump, you can see the sparkles. The same thing applies here, 5:35 Note: What I just mentioned here was a glitch.
i haven't played sonic jam (for obvious reasons) so out of every sonic game i've ever played, the worst has easily been sonic genesis gba. i'd love to know what they did to the physics to make them THAT bad and the camera is so erratic as well as the frame rate. i gave up in labyrinth zone (i'm amazed i made it that far tbh) because the lag was even worse due to the slowness of the water.

If you watch Rerez's review of the Game Com, you'd find that Tiger Electronics faked gameplay of Sonic Jam when selling the system, making the game appear faster than it actually was. Even the people who made the bloody thing it's running on know it's a piece of shit.
Not gonna lie, they could port free riders on the switch and make it more interactive with the joy cons, but then again, would have to source out for the controller support
Honestly I think the worst Sonic game is indeed Sonic Chronicles. It’s the one Sonic game that I can easily confuse with shovelware, and has bad stuff everywhere. The gameplay is bad, the animation is bad, the art, the story, and especially the music which is a CRIME for a Sonic game.

Rise of Lyric easily takes the crown. Big Red Button were an ill fit for the Sonic series. Literally the only things I like about Rise of Lyric is the voice work (except for Kirk Thorton as Shadow in that game) and how the characters actually look like they are interacting with each other.
Big Red Button were more than capable, look into the game's development and you'll realize that SEGA ultimately killed BOOM, they f*cked with BRB's work on every turn
No saves is natural because of how large the game was in cartridge form, could have fit in a password save system, but wouldn't have helped too much. Collecting flickies isn't a bad concept on it's own, especially for a isometric sonic game that can't be a traditional platformer due to hardware limitations. The controls are very rubbish sure, but far from making the game unplayable. There's worse sonic games out there, Sonic 3D Blast is just a decent/alright game.

Personally, I think the battle music is more tolerable than the map music in Chronicles. In general, the final boss theme is underrated.

so i know this is defiantly a controversial take but i wish Sonic 06 got a remake. i think Sonic 06 has untapped potential to be a good sonic game but it seems whenever something doesn't work Sega never tries it again to make it better. i think the open world of Soleanna has a lot of potential to be explored further, i liked that each character played differently and could be expanded upon. i think a remake could do the game justice. remove the horrible bugs, update the graphics, add more interesting side quests, power ups, the ability to go super i any stage after a certain point, and defiantly change the plot especially the ending. i feel like it could work

When I was young I loved Sonic Chronicles and played it religiously. Which might have been because it was the only game I had which allowed me to play as Shadow in a "story-based Sonic game"
Also the story was lowkey a banger and the new characters were hella cool, you can really tell the devs loved Sonic with how they characterized everyone and even down to their moves. It's a shame it was so under polished and rushed, plus Pender's later in the future ruining things. It really could have been great.

Sonic Forces isn't a bad game (its definitely not a good one though), it was just subject to one of the worst perfect storms possible.
It released just after Sonic Mania, arguably the best classic sonic game of all-time so people got hyped up for a good sonic game.
Instead we got an extremely short, linear and boring boost game that's at the very least polished.

I was one of the few who loved Chronicles and I'm still holding a grudge against Penders.
The plot was good, the game wasn't easy but not frustratingly hard and the dialogue options were interesting.

Well, at least Sonic Free Riders got some sort of redemption when some guy decided to remove the Kinect controls from the game.

I never heard someone saying that Spinball 8 bit is hard, I have it the master System version and I finished on the same day, but I never tried the game gear port so maybe it's a little different.
Fun fact: Master System Sonic Spinball (1995) was the second last game SEGA released for the Master System but the console had games until 1997, all of them being not popular in nether USA or Japan
And all of them were released in Brazil, because the Master System sold like hotcakes in Brazil for some reason.

Here's something interesting. In Sonic Mania when you get the Lightning Shield and press X or Y or 🟪, depending on the console, on Debug Mode, you don't see the shield itself, but when you double jump, you can see the sparkles. The same thing applies here, 5:35

i haven't played sonic jam (for obvious reasons) so out of every sonic game i've ever played, the worst has easily been sonic genesis gba. i'd love to know what they did to the physics to make them THAT bad and the camera is so erratic as well as the frame rate. i gave up in labyrinth zone (i'm amazed i made it that far tbh) because the lag was even worse due to the slowness of the water.
As someone who loves 06, I can appreciate that it wasn't in the thumbnail.

the reason the Master System is super popular in Brazil is because there's extremely high import taxes there, making modern gaming an extreme luxury.
If you watch Rerez's review of the Game Com, you'd find that Tiger Electronics faked gameplay of Sonic Jam when selling the system, making the game appear faster than it actually was. Even the people who made the bloody thing it's running on know it's a piece of shit.

Honestly I think the worst Sonic game is indeed Sonic Chronicles. It’s the one Sonic game that I can easily confuse with shovelware, and has bad stuff everywhere. The gameplay is bad, the animation is bad, the art, the story, and especially the music which is a CRIME for a Sonic game.

Rise of Lyric easily takes the crown. Big Red Button were an ill fit for the Sonic series. Literally the only things I like about Rise of Lyric is the voice work (except for Kirk Thorton as Shadow in that game) and how the characters actually look like they are interacting with each other.
Big Red Button were more than capable, look into the game's development and you'll realize that SEGA ultimately killed BOOM, they f*cked with BRB's work on every turn

No saves is natural because of how large the game was in cartridge form, could have fit in a password save system, but wouldn't have helped too much.
Collecting flickies isn't a bad concept on it's own, especially for a isometric sonic game that can't be a traditional platformer due to hardware limitations.
The controls are very rubbish sure, but far from making the game unplayable.
There's worse sonic games out there, Sonic 3D Blast is just a decent/alright game.
