Building My Tiny Cabin on Wheels: What I've done so far. | Off Grid Cabin Build

- This is a video showing how I built my tiny cabin on wheels from start to where I am now with the build.
Since even before starting the build I haven't known whether to call this thing a tiny house, a tiny cabin, a caravan, or gypsy camper. Not sure. What I can say is that the tiny cabin I'm building is only 50 square feet in size. I'm building it in the style of a gypsy wagon vardo (probably one of the historically original types of tiny house on wheels). I'm building this cabin on wheels without any plans other than a rough sketch I did before starting the build. Not sure if its a good idea to build without a set of plans but so far so good.
This is Part Seven of my Tiny House Building series. In this video I review the entire process so far in a very quick timelapse style video. This video also includes how I built the arched roof which is previously not published.
Although I have a fair amount of woodworking experience, I've never built anything like a tiny cabin before. I thought creating a series might help viewers build their own or at least show what I did. Plus, I think it makes a pretty interesting video.
I'll be posting new videos as they become available.
Check out the next summary video showing what I did next here: • Building My Off Grid C...
I hope you enjoy this video. Thanks for watching! 🙂

Hey everyone, Thanks for watching this video. I've recently published the next summary video showing what I've done on the off grid cabin after this stage. You can find that video here: ruclips.net/video/snd0Y9kBLLc/видео.html or check out my channel playlist to see each step of the build process.
Nice video, bro. Thanks for showing me your job. 👍🙂
Love the horse drawn wagon going by in the back ground.
At 2:48, a horse drawn wagon goes by one the road behind you... very cool!
Obsessed with this build!!! We live in our converted school bus, and now my mom wants her own tiny home so I told her I'd build her something like this. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you.
Sorry, there haven't been any updates for a while. I messed up my shoulder in the spring so have been giving it a time out.
Will be adding the windows, door and continuing with the build very soon.
School bus sounds very cool. (Don't give me ideas 😆)
@@TrailguidePictures no worries! We had to take breaks on our build, too (our poor backs!). I hope your shoulder is all healed up and I can't wait to see what's next!
P.S. If you don't want any ideas on skoolies, I strongly advise you avoid our instagram @ridethephoenix 😋
Wonderful. Enjoyed every step.awaiting next steps
Wish you were my neighbour's.
I like that wagon pulled by two horses on the background @ 2:49. Bzw, great work Jason!
Bloody beautiful well done mate
This is exactly what I've been looking for. I have no skills but hopefully a carpenter could reproduce this for me. Great job.
The Vardo tiny houses are so cute and lovely. Would love to live in one.
You work pretty fast. I'm building a Gypsy Wagon (5x10) right now. I had supports welded for the overhang, and my roof is more rounded. Look for my video later this year.
Very wonderful, i loved it
l love your tiny house!!
I really love that you used two different types of cedar, the contrast really pops, and looks really warm! I need to see you when it’s all done!
You mentioned something I was wondering about that I’m curious if you addressed later… the wobbly nature of the trailer. Did you add any kind of fold down, adjustable height corner legs to stabilize the trailer when it’s not hooked up to your tow vehicle? Most pop-up campers have them so you can level it on slopes or uneven ground and, more importantly, so any changes in center of gravity inside the trailer keeps the tongue end from “tipping up.”
That really looks great, thanks for sharing, stay safe, God bless !
My friend you are truly a Tradesman. Excellent work!
Thank you very much!
Looking good top job
Excellent video, starting my wife’s Vardo soon. Got a lot of great ideas and information. Can’t wait to see the finished product.
Jason thanks for the knowledge and the video....
regards,..
You had me at Canadian Tire 😊. Looking great.
Right on!
Watched the complete build. Wonderful.you are amazing. There is another gifted man I follow. Can't get enough of you. Would adopt you if I could. Splendid work. Angela.
Looking so great Jason 😁👍🏻 love your little gypsy wagon. And nice to see you again my friend 🏕🔥🛶
Tom
Excellent build so far! Thank you for doing the step by step and for the product info as you went along. I start mine in the spring, and I am a wood worker and artist so I will be doing my own version, but I will for sure be starting by rewatching your build!
This is awesome. Thank you so much for taking the time to film and share this. I’m picking up my trailer tomorrow and will be on a similar journey! Keep up the great work!!!
Wow! Unlike a lot of Vardo builders you are really talented. Really nice build so far.
I call mine a little cabin on wheels...but yours takes that to the next level. Looks great.
Nicely done with the trailer restoration. The biscuit joiner brought back old, but good memories. Mine is a dewalt. I haven't used/needed it since the mid 90's. I still have about 1000 biscuits in 3 sizes.
Looking good. Cant wait to see the door.
Lots. Of fun
Super slick design and build, very sturdy and appealing looking. Prepping for a diy cabin/camper build right now down here in Austin,Tx and I am getting ALOT of good ideas and tips from your videos. Thanks so much for making and posting!
Omg! Your amazing! Incredible canoes too
Thanks
awesome job
This looks great so far!

Very nice Cabin ❤️🌳❤️
Excellent job and video....................
Nice build you should be proud of it I'm getting ready to build one.I got some great ideas from your build.
The roof is great.
Thanks.
I know what I'm doing with the old trailer now, thanks.
Quite a nice video (and cabin, by the way). Not dull, not long, with a lot of nice tips. Well done! Thank you
Awesome build. I love watching RUclips videos when the creator mentions Canadian Tire, lol. I live in Ontario Canada. You have done some great work on your gypsy camper. One day I would like to build my own camper. I have been looking at building a teardrop trailer or gypsy camper. I'm also an avid kayaker, I would also like to build a Greenland skin on frame kayak.
I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Looks great Jay . Can’t wait to see you finish the job thanks. Cheers 👍🇨🇦
It looks awesome
Once I saw the biscuit cutter I thought "old mate knows what hes doing" so I subbed Im a Cabinet Maker/Joiner, in Australia

Awesome work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent work man very well done 👏
Thank you very much Dad
Nice!
Hi Jason very nice build...i have been wanting to build something like this instead of a teardrop.
Actually I was thinking of a tear drop before I started this. Thing is, this might be for travel or I might just find a little bit of land and park it as a cabin getaway.
Like the roof line. I hate the peaked, shingle roofs.
Looks awesome!
Awesome job! Its more of a Vardo Wagon than anything else. Am interested in seeing how you finish it.
Its not a vardo at all. Its a trailer. Do you called boats cars? Vardos have 4 wheels with two used for steering.
Ah, that answers my question. You used tongue and groove cedar siding that you got from an Amish wood mill down the road. I saw a man on the road behind you with horses and a trailer. I was going to ask if you were/are Amish or if you lived nearby an Amish community.
love it great job
Great work Jason! Great video!
Hi Paul,
Love this project, well done, I come from a traditional Irish travelling family, and your respect to the build is appreciated.
Although the proper name is a Bow top wagon not a gypsy wagon.
Do you have an email address I would like to chat with regards some canoeing in Algonighan if you don’t mind.
Henry
Scotland.
Hi. the name i came across for it is "gypsy Vardo". It seem's to be a few names for it.
No please dont use gypsy. Its not a wagon as its a trailer. Its not a vardo as its a trailer. He is right..be respectful and not a racist. English Traveller here.
Fascinada! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
great work so far man, love the look of it
My hubby is fixing to build one Luke thus ad what's funny is he looks like you and dresses like you and his name is Jason lol.
Awesome!
At 2:45 in the background.....😍😍😍😍
Muy bonita
Gracias
Excellent build,I would go with a dutch door
He built a Dutch door
This is interesting. I am looking for just such a thing, but likely smaller, to use as a display for my art work. It would have to fit in a 10x10 space. I once saw one with doors on the long sides that opened up to hang the paintings on each side. There was also place to put prints under the swinging display doors. He had a table that came down to cover the hitch, used as a work table. The inside had shelves to put the paintings on and other materials for the shows. He also had awnings that opened out on I think 3 sides. It was wired for lights. I have been looking for such a thing and Han=ve=e not found anything. I like this one that you did, because it is neutral in color. Do you build these for other people?
Hello, what a great video, inspiring.
Would you know the weight of the finished wagon by any chance? Thank you.
why did you use nails, instead of screws? I love the way it looks and I am thinking about building one with my son.
That's looking great, Jason. 🙂👍 If you had decided to go the teardrop route, would it have been the same process as your canoe or kayak?
Use screws. Nails will work themselves out with flexing of the trailer.
Beautiful mobile cabin! What's your weight and overall ht. like?
For the algorithm!
Do you happen to know what the axle rating is for your trailer? 3500 or 5000? Would really like to know, since I'm looking at building something similar.
What are your window plans? Buying or making? Buy where?
hey! i’m considering doing the same thing. do you happen to know off the top of your head the legal measurements?
Hey Becca,
No, I'm afraid I don't. It was a 4 x 8 trailer to start with.
Very nice, any estimate on the weight?
