I love the fact that people still know Waylon's songs from the first line into it. Country music fans have been fed a bunch of crap in the last 15 years, but we still love the real thing. Sturgill and his fantastic band have brought us the music we've been longing for. I thank them for that.
Most "country fans' don't even know what the "real thing" is, sadly. Guess I'm OK with it, I have no problems finding new artists and still cherishing those no longer with us.
Nobody has commented about the roller coaster of emotions this video takes us on? The little girl wondering if she'll get an autograph? Her running to the stage? Sturgill turning his back to her, only to turn around and give her the autograph!!!!!! I got goosebumps
Yah, I don't think he saw her because of the towel on the mike stand...you can see bass player telling him the girl's there and to turn around with a look that says "Come on dude, you're gonna leave her hanging?" It was a cool moment. All the members of the band that we interacted with seemed like really cool guys.
It's 8:36 in the morning, I'm drunk & listening to Sturgill. Some times whiskey, some times wine. Go Boy, Go !!!! Love this Hillbilly shit !!!!! Show em where your from. The South has risen again !!!!!
Saw Him do this'n at Stubb's and he prefaced it with "Some folks say I sound like this cat... And then during he sang the words Waylon he's dead, been a long time gone... " It was beautiful and we all went apeshit nuts! Thank you Mr Simpson&Co!!
Sturgill always acts like such a smart ass when anyone says he sounds like Waylon Jennings... but he does. He had no problem singin Waylon's songs and riding his name to the top. This genre of music (and Laur Jomets) will always be the reason Sturgill Simpson got any recognition whatsoever. I don't know what that crap is he's been singing lately, but I can promise you people won't be singing it 30 years from now.
100% agreement, there. I think people are afraid to condemn someone they really loved and want to be open to new stuff, but for me it's been steeply downhill since Metamodern Sounds.
You can hear a reluctance or lack of enthusiasm in Sturgill's voice when he sings Waymore's Blues, because with his voice he's probably got requests to play Waylon constantly over the years. Combine that with the fact that he's said he's not really a Waylon fan and you get the sense that he sings it out of obligation. But there's certainly a fair amount of his own songs that emulate Waylon's sound on Hightop Mountain and even Metamodern Sounds. I suppose that could be chalked up to the producer, but it certainly seems like he's not afraid to take influence from Waylon if not directly cover him.

Benjamin - thanks for sharing. What kind of equipment did you use to record this? Picture and sound are fantastic!
Glad you enjoyed it. I was using a Sony SLT-A57 with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM DT Standard Zoom lens.
Benjamin Wood Thanks Benjamin.
Holly shit
I wonder if the young girl in this video realizes she now has the signature of a future legend in her possession ?
If you liked this one, check out Sturgill's epic closer from the night before, here: ruclips.net/video/Ava1KENjisg/видео.html
Somebody get Joe a band.
I love this cover, and his music but he seems like he don't even wanna play it?
He said in an interview that he has to battle crippling stage fright every time he performs. I think that makes him even more impressive.
WHY are we talking about his shoes? Get that shit outta here.
I love Sturgill and waylon but this didn't impress me
Is that you Helen Keller? When did you learn too.... never mind.
