I've owned the SPB149J1 for several months and I wholly agree with your review. For me, this is my perfect Seiko diver. I love the vintage styling queues. Yup. I agree that some Seikos are too dear. I also agree that many micro's offer more for less spec wise, and a number of micro brands hold their value very well. But that doesn't mean that I won't buy Seiko when I like the watch and I'll certainly never pay retail. If I'm prepared to wait until the heat surrounding certain references fades, I will always pick them up heavily discounted. Admittedly, even at a discount they are not cheap for what they are but why should they be? I paid $700AUD (from an online AD) for my SPB123J Alpinist late last year. It's an absolute cracker of a timepiece at a price that I think is more than fair for what I got. Nice watch, the colour combination is just right. I am absolutely fine with pushpins, never had one come out and you dont risk scratching it with screwdrivers. In the the UK with the cutthroat competition at the moment I checked three dealers selling it and the price was exactly £1100 at them all. There is a load of options at that price unless to you just have to get one of these.

Great review as always, Jody. I absolutely love mine, FWIW, not only the ultimate Seiko Diver, but such a pleasure to wear it has me out of the market for divers for a while.
I do think the SPB143 is Seiko’s ‘ultimate’ dive watch when you factor everything in, and I think it’s become quite an iconic model now during its relatively short run time. The OG version with no lume index at the 3 is the best, and now that it’s likely to be discontinued with the release of the next gen I think it’ll garner a bit of cult status.
Thanks for the review! Had my eye on this one since I read a Hodinkee article a couple of months back, yours is a much more balanced review imo - much appreciated!
I think the market rate is right around $1000. Although I paid full price for my SPB149 LE because I was born in the same month and year as the original 62MAS so I had to have the 55th Anniversary Limited Edition, even at full retail. And yes, I think it's the ultimate Seiko diver. Love mine. The fit is perfection and on wrist it runs 0spd since I got it back in October of 2020. Zero complaints except for the clasp which I simply replaced with one minus the dive extension for a better fit. Enough with the signed crown complaints. I have NEVER cared about a signed crown. Who looks at the crown for chrissake? If it's signed, great. If it isn't, also great. Ya know who signs all their crowns? Orient. And yet the crowns on just about all of their divers suck. Too small and poor of a grip, and no amount of signing it is gonna change that. The SPB143 has a nicely brushed crown that beautifully evokes the brushing of the case and the insert. It works perfectly too with no backspin required to thread it.
Have to agree. I panic bought at full retail (no tax via Gnomon, luckily) and love it, but braclet integration is crap, and also, the extension digs in over the day. Had to get a uncle seiko tropic and a strapcode bracelet to try and find a better option. Both fit better, but the bracelet is a different shade. Also, mine loses 10s a day. Pay the money and take a chance.....
Had mine for about a year and I love it. I love the diashield and it sits very slim on the wrist because of the case design. Mine is perfectly aligned and I don’t care about the signed crown. I switch it between the bracelet and a tropic.
I bought this when it came out, your right about the bracelet, very heavy, but it looks much better on a black or dark grey tropic rubber strap. my only issue is it runs about a minute a day too fast, haven't been able to have it fixed yet, waiting for Seiko dealers to open up. but would recommend it, also had the San Martin 62mas, and have to say in some ways I preferred it, but since this is a Seiko I thought I would keep this, also the bezel & dial are a delight!
Two months after acquisition the watch started losing almost 30 seconds per hour on the wrist! Off the wrist plus six per day. Sent it to SEIKO, five weeks later it came back the same! Took it to watch repair service for $640.00. Hope they do a better job .Still waiting.
I really wanted to love this watch. I bought it and sold it twice. The dial and case size is perfect but the inaccuracy of the movement and subpar bracelet (pin and collar, uncomfortable diver’s extension) are rather unforgivable at this US$1k-ish price point.
It's a doddle to regulate the 6R35. All you need is a timegrapher and a phone app like the Android WatchCheck to evaluate daily gain/loss over a few days to a week. If there is daily consistency you should be able to hone it in to zero to +3 seconds gain per day average.
@@Laz_Arus having to regulate a $1k Seiko for better accuracy is like having to buy a $20k Toyota and having to tune it for better fuel efficiency. Yes it can be done aftermarket but that should be the job of the manufacturer.
Those diver's extensions are so uncomfortable after a couple of hours on the wrist. I wish Seiko would drop them and come up with a different design that doesn't dig into your wrist.
@Riki P. I think you missed the point I was making... I'm not using the diver's extension to help size the bracelet, that would be daft, I'm saying that when left in its default position, it digs into your wrist and is badly placed and designed. Hope that's clear. 👍🏼
@Riki P. If you size the bracelet so the extension part falls dead center on the bottom of your wrist; with the clasp slightly off center to the right, as you look at the bottom of your wrist (assuming you're right-handed and wear it on the left wrist). It should help. In other words, reposition the diver's extension so it defaults to a more comfortable place and the bracelet will wear fine.
Not something I have noticed on my Seikos... Just out of curiosity, what's you wrist size and shape? Are you perhaps towards one of the ends of the bell curve? I have a relatively flat 8 inch wrist.
I have one of these and love it. They should get rid of the extension, it serves no purpose for 99.99 percent of the people who wear it. Would rather have a better micro adjust.
I once was really infatuated with this and was choosing between this and the Captain Willard because I really like that square/baton indices and rectangular hand look on a watch. However after I tried them on in a boutique and with the introduction of the Traska Commuter and Christopher Ward's C63 Automatic (I know both of them are not diver's, but I was looking for a dark/black dialled sports watch) I really have fallen out of love of the two Seikos. The end link was one of niggles that I had with this piece as well.
Once again a very nice review, this time of a modern interpretation of an absolute classic Seiko watch which needs no introduction. The original 6217-8000 was where it all began for Seiko in the dive watch stakes and anything they can offer us mere mortals which harks back to this legend is ok by myself. The SLA release was out of the price range for most but this particular watch is absolutely on the money for the vast majority, staying as close as possible to the original design and dimensions. The previous 62Mas Seiko release you mentioned was actually the SPB051 and not the 053 which was the blue version but the same watch nevertheless. It’s larger case size although beautifully finished and with a strap to die for, distanced itself from the original on which it was designed unfortunately, but a great release nevertheless. Keep them coming !
I have to disagree about the lack of a signed crown. Look closely and you'll see that it has circular brushing that gives it a lovely, subtle sunburst effect that perfectly matches the mid-century minimalist aesthetic of the watch. It just works. Stamping it with an "S" or that Prospex "X" would just look gaudy.
HiJody, I've only picked up your channel in the last couple of months but really enjoy your videos....keep up the good work. Although I just want to say that signed crowns goes against the Prospex brand. Ever since the first Laurel, Seiko have not put signed crowns on their professional "outdoor/diver" watches. I think that there may be 2 exceptions for short run "limited" editions. I think that blinging up these watches with signed metalware paradoxically dilutes the strength of the branding....I really don't like the signed keeper and buckle on my SRPE37. I won't be going for a "King" version of any of their watches again. I do have an SPB143 and I think it's a really nice watch (luckily it's a good one!), nobody quite does a dial like Seiko - if you're lucky enough to get a dust free one. If somebody wants a signed crown, get a cheaper watch from the Presage collection - I don't think it has anything to do with cost.
The thing is with Seiko there's just so many homages that pack more features like a fully lumed bezel, for 1/4 of the price and contain the NH35 which really isn't that much different to the 6R movement
I’ve been lusting for this for a while. Not seen it in the metal yet so haven’t pulled the trigger. I also gave up ordering Seiko’s online due to misalignment issues. Hopefully with lockdown restrictions lifting here in the UK I should find one soon.
I'd like to think that the unsigned crown is an stylistic choice, not just Seiko trying to cut costs. I don't think there's a single Prospex model with a signed crown, and that's including their LX line of 5,000+ USD watches. I know the 'tool-watch' argument is a bit nonsensical, but this is supposed to be their professional line. If it's too much of a bother to you, you can still get a Presage with a signed crown for under $300
Hi... Love your reviews, i need to say that i have one big issue with most of the watch channels, there is no reviews for good quality quartz dive watches with accurate swiss movements.... Please try to find and review dive quartz watches from aliexpress... maybe ask steeldive or san martin to produce one , thanks
For me it is indeed the ultimate Seiko diver -almost-... :) Agree with all negative points, however the watch overall is a great timepiece. No idea why, I am frequently watching my SPB 145 (browngreygreenish dial) and it is such a good looking tool. Looks like the real business. Nice looking but not that luxurious. Just right for what it is. Great video! Thanks! (PS: SPB 145 time keeping during 1 month of wearing it is at +0.5sec/day. Not that bad.. ;)).
Great video as always Jody but would it kill Seiko to work in some nice touches like a fully lumed ceramic bezel, signed crown, a milled divers extension within the main clasp, an on the fly micro adjust and some bloody articulated end links!!?? Seriously, if micro brands can do it AND for less money AND with better QC then WHY can't a giant like Seiko do it and destroy the competition at the same time??? Just saying.....
I think Seiko knows what it’s doing when they don’t sign the crown. If a brand doesn’t have an accompanying icon to its logotype, does it even make sense to attempt this? When you see the occasional S on the crowns of random Seikos, it seems like MORE of a last minute after thought. It looked as though this watch had a beautiful radial brushing on the end it’s crown… that’s pretty dope! A random capital S shouldn’t necessarily be an indicator of quality. I think if Seiko’s brand standards dictate no signed crown, then the more egregious issue is when they occasionally sign some. Either they develop a contained icon to accompany their logotype as part of their overall branding, or they just stick to no signed crowns at all. Consistency is a better hallmark of quality.
To put it in perspective, the 6R35, which Seiko regards as somewhat of a mid-range movement for them, is directly competing with the Swatch Group's Powermatic 80 series of movements, which is considered an entry level movement for them. I've had two 6R35s, one ran at +15 a day and the other at +18, regulated down to about +7/8 at a watchmaker. I've had one Powermatic 80 movement in a Mido diver that runs at +3 secs a day out of the box. If you own / owned a 6R35 or a movement based on the Powermatic 80, I'd be interested to know the performance you're getting from them.
People really get blinded by brands and marketing. Okay heritage is cool but if you are making 1k watches with dust on the dial that heritage means jack shit when others are doing better for much less 😂
@@SWatchik Perhaps, but are these companies really making a „better watch“ (timeless, original design, not a stand-in for a more expensive watch, etc.), or are they simply improving specific parts of the watch (end links, clasp, bezel), with the end result only being the sum of its parts, and nothing more? A 40 year old Sub is still considered a great watch, despite being technically not much better than an SKX. On the other hand, I can’t see anyone still wearing their Helm Vanuatu in 40 year’s time, as it is decently made, but a forgettable design from a forgettable brand.
@@hubertuswolfthaler I mean you could argue the same for almost any new watch made by any brand. There are very few iconic timeless watches, but that doesn't mean say something like the Zenith defy 21 for example isn't a bad watch or even a better watch in some aspects than its competition. It probably won't age well but that's a different thing altogether
@@hubertuswolfthaler Unlike Seiko, Rolex made improvements to that 40 yr old design,A modern Submariner is a much better watch than the original. A new SKX still has all the faults of the original, and Seiko's lack of quality control means the new ones are made worse than the originals.

The bracelet while being solid and good looking just misses the mark on fit mostly due to that awkward diver's extension. The OEM Seiko rubber strap that comes with the limited-edition and the SPB147J1 looks great while also being very comfortable. And as you said it's a strap monster and lots of fun to pair with different straps. Love your videos Jody, best wishes from Ireland.
A nice watch and agree about the bracelet. I do currently feel SEIKO are too expensive with so many alternatives.
I couldn’t agree with you more. There are so many micro-brands now that give you way more for far less money.
@@NoOne-ki3bm sure they do. But will you get good money when you sell them?.
@@Westlandia If you are only watching this channel to find watches to flip, then you are staggeringly piss poor at the watch flipping game.

@@Br0ns0n look who is the downer. Just saying some watches keep value better than others. Aint no flipperboy. And sometimes you have to sell watches to get your grail.
Whether the heat will ᴇᴠᴇʀ die down on this piece I can't say.., It seems to be the luxury watch crowds go to 'beater' atm... But if it does and they hit Starbuy for ~$1K AUD, I'll be ᴛʜʀᴏᴡɪɴɢ my $ at this piece!
I’m glad the crown is unsigned, that circular brushing looks far nicer than having a cheesy S or X on there.
Agreed! Signed crown is the most overrated thing ever.
@@tomislavm2873 Especially on a tool watch; I don’t want that thing to be covered in logos like a rally car.
Jody, you always seem to come out with the right reviews just at the right moment. I was looking to maybe buy this one in a few weeks, so thanks for the great review of all its ups and downs :)
Tried this on my wrist at an AD other day it's so nice.. One day I'll get one!!
Just coming back to say I got it!!!
Just checked my Omega Seamaster 300 Co-ax master and my Ball limited edition; end links to both also had wobble.
Ouch! That is way more than Marty paid in AUD. I'd be having a look at CW if you can't find a better deal on the Seiko. Cheers Phil!
@@JustOneMoreWatch whilst I was looking a stumbled across MENS CERTINA DS ACTION DIVER POWERMATIC 80 AUTOMATIC WATCH C0324071105100 which is directly equivalent (if not better) in my view at "the watch hut" for £725
Great review as always, Jody.
Got this, my first Seiko. Love it and no QC issues (at least to the naked eye). I paid retail though 😭😭😭
Thanks for the review! Had my eye on this one since I read a Hodinkee article a couple of months back, yours is a much more balanced review imo - much appreciated!
Fantastic review brother and I agree with you about the design of the bracelet not necessarily matching the watch case, but I still love mine 😊
I know you love this one Miguel! I can understand why.
Love the time lapse feature of your video! Bravo! Nicely done
Nice watch, but I would expect a better movement for the price. I would rather a Borealis/Zelos/NTH, or RLG for less than half the price
For that price I would go for a Steinhart or a Mido….better specs and quality for me
I got the white one coming FEDEX HURRY UP!

Exactly !
What a great start to the weekend!
Own, love it. I think its worth every penny even at retail. Love at first sight for me.
Because of this channel, I now have a Steeldive 1970 and an Invicta 8926ob. Thanks!
I prefer an unsigned crown. Signed crowns never line up perfectly and look partially unscrewed. That bothers me.
Interesting perspective I've never considered, fair enough. One upside to unsigned crowns
Me, too, not bothered with signed crowns at all.
Seiko needs to adopt COSC or come up with their own standard, would give me a lot more comfort at this end on their offering spectrum and below
A watch has to be Swiss to fall under COSC though?
I have watched at least 10 different videos on the SPB143, thanks for mentioning the SPB185J!!! Wanted to make an informed purchase.
Absolutely beautiful that. With the exception of the end links not matching the watch.
Just purchased a seiko propex ma's 65 "homage " reissue very pleased with it my favourite watch
Good video as always a Saturday morning treat.
If Seiko charged $2000 for one Seiko fans would still buy them.
Love to have one with a blue dial!
Good review, have just bought one online half way through the video. Cheers.
Seiko Samurai ticks all the boxes for me.Its the perfect Seiko dive watch.
The thing is with Seiko there's just so many homages that pack more features like a fully lumed bezel, for 1/4 of the price and contain the NH35 which really isn't that much different to the 6R movement
Just put in a NE15 or pay more and stick in a 6r35 and you have just about the same as this !
My comment almost exactly . I would take my $500 Lorier Hydra over this any day .
But it'll never be a seiko. I'm done with homages. Imo and experience a lot of them are cheap with poor finishing.
I have this watch and the movement runs very well and everything lines up. Well worth the money.
Superb review, I think this is the best looking Seiko diver for the money.
I’ve been lusting for this for a while. Not seen it in the metal yet so haven’t pulled the trigger. I also gave up ordering Seiko’s online due to misalignment issues. Hopefully with lockdown restrictions lifting here in the UK I should find one soon.
I love this video and I haven't even watched yet 😁
What a coincidence. I’m getting ready to wear this watch out today for the first time since COVID.
If it's too much of a bother to you, you can still get a Presage with a signed crown for under $300
What a great video. Jody you are a seriously talented person.
The darker tone of the stainless steel is beautiful 😍
Before I watch this, my fingers are crossed that everything lines up on this Seiko watch 🤣
That is a beauty. I'll continue to enjoy my San Martin at 1/5 the cost for now.
Well I own a few 6r35 and they run -1, +2, +1. So what is your point?
@@tomislavm2873 Oh, I'm sorry. Does there need to be a point for you?
Seiko is the watch equivalent of that good old friend, you need to keep making excuses for to your significant other
"But he's a mate, so what can you do?"
@@hubertuswolfthaler Unlike Seiko, Rolex made improvements to that 40 yr old design,A modern Submariner is a much better watch than the original. A new SKX still has all the faults of the original, and Seiko's lack of quality control means the new ones are made worse than the originals.
One of my favourite divers! I’ve deliberated over getting it for a long time, but a grand for a Seiko is just too much IMO. Ended up getting the San Martin 62mas V4 and the new Christopher Ward C63 GMT (with money left over) instead. The CW is stunning for the price and SM’s V4 is their best yet. No regrets!
