It never occurred to me that the comment Jane made to Quinn, “condition people to expect nothing and the least little something gets them all excited”, is kinda like foreshowing how quickly Quinn (and presumably others) would be fooled by Daria’s, I’ll use your word, Quinnification

17:55 for real. I’ve always found it funny that this show wants us to believe that Daria is just this unpopular person, but all of the popular people seek her out. They ask her for advice on personal issues, i think they even visit her in the hospital that one time she got that rash. None of the nerds in my HS got that treatment.

Britney probably thinks of Daria as a friend, meanwhile Daria’s meaner to her and Kevin than they are to her 💀
Love that about Daria actually. There are mean and nice popular people as well as mean and nice nerds like irl despite the generic narrative that popular kids are bullies and nerds never can be.
You see Daria’s opinions and how it sometimes contradicts what’s actually going on lol.

100%. I've always appreciated that this show doesn't really have a true antagonist (outside of maybe some of the teachers). Of the main cast, Quinn probably comes the closest and Daria gives just as good as she gets so she's not totally innocent in that relationship either.

My guess is that Daria's pink shirt was a gift from a relative who doesn't know her very well. She was too polite to ask for the receipt, but never wore the shirt, so it just stayed in the wardrobe with the tag still on (source: personal experience!)

I always assumed that the pink shirt was something that Quin bought her as a last minute present. Originally, it was supposed to be for herself, but it ended up as a Daria present. Quin probably thought of getting it back, but thought that it was even too tacky for her to ask for her gift back.

You know i like that this one shows that Daria does have some insecurities. She is comfortable being not the most attractive and smart. But having someone who is attractive and smart threatens her sense of place.
It shows that Daria isn’t as above everyone as she acts. And it is a lesson to the audience in false dichotomies. You can ve smart and attractive. You can be athletic and smart. You can be leas attractive and stupid or not attractive and arrogant.
For me the best part having watched the whole show a few times. It hints that Quin is smarter than she lets in. She is smart in her three D chess with Sandi or Helen. But here we get just a taste of how book smart and people smart Quin can be.

I loved Daria's rebrand❤❤. It would have been cool to see her sense of style expanding, which ever direction she was going in as long as it looked good and it was true to her. Experimenting would have been interesting to see.Similar to how Jane would sometimes change her style or try to assimilate within the popular crowd as an experiment or how Quinn has a variety of outfits.

21:18 This episode reminds me of that "Hey Arnold" episode, the one where Helga and Harold get their career tests mixed up. Harold starts acting like a genius and Helga starts acting like a hillbilly stereotype. In the climax, Harold finds out that he's not a genius and has an existential crisis because, everyone thought he was stupid until the text, but because his test got mixed up with Helga's, everyone is going to think he's still the class idiot.
I'm glad my sister and I never went to the same high school.
Just wanting to be accepted as something and then others telling you are not that, it's just like others get to pick who you are. You always have to question your identity. "Am I really smart or do I just act smart?"
It's really humiliating! I have been complimented on being smart, but then, it just seems like people see the real me. Then, they automatically start seeing the "real me" as an idiot who just runs her mouth. Which is it? Am I smart or am I just a smartass?
Hell, even typing that out and putting myself down, it's just...so I sympathize with Quinn and Daria.

Honestly, Daria observing other people purely to be different from them sound exactly like something she'd do.
After all, people have been looking down on her for not being like everybody else since her early childhood, when her parents had her see a counselor for the bullying she was receiving as a kid.
Jake even said that if Daria gave the other kids a chance, she might like them. It was an example of blaming the kid who is getting bullied instead of blaming the bullies. She had tried, but they pushed her away. Why can't the other kids be taught to make an effort?
Years of this reenforcement have led to Daria becoming how she is now. After all, why would she want to be like people who hate her for superficial reasons when she can hate them for being superficial in the first place?

Daria is highly insecure and pretentious. But I guess that’s the point of the show.

as the show progresses, daria learns how to not be pretentious. so yea, daria learns stuff in episodes...did you even watch the show?

@@vaniillazilla I’ve watched the show (all seasons including the 2 feature length tv films) and Daria ends the show STILL a pretension unexposed teen, so what now? Yes she improves (albeit marginally) compared to the start of the show, but a random viewer watching the final season would STILL walk away believing she thought she was better than everyone else. She does not get the benefit of being a reformed individual because she gained much needed awareness over time (if she didn’t, she’d be a robot lol). She and Quinn are two sides of the same narcissistic coin. Viewers openly enjoy Daria’s sarcasm to the point of admiration but would NEVER accept or put up with that level of sarcasm from another individual in real life. In fact, they’d be quick to call it out as rude. So no, Daria doesn’t “learn how to not be pretentious” as she never stops being just that.

Teenagers literally cannot be considered narcissists because adolescents basically have Narcissistic traits baked in by default.

@@somnodaur8064 “teenagers cannot be considered narcissists” this is a factually wrong statement that you said with so much confidence. Did you get that from any scientific research (specifically the DSM 6) or did you make that up off the top of your head? I’ll take a wild guess….
I’ll invite you to do your own research and end this conversation here. Happy studying!
