My Grampa fought in WWI. He kept a diary but said very little about the fighting. He mentioned visiting a beautiful church in an abandoned (and otherwise nearly destroyed) town in France. In another such place, he found a nice (but _not_ an expensive make) violin in its case and given the destruction around him, was given permission to... _liberate_ it. He started a small orchestra (many musical soldiers brought their portable instruments with them. He was in a Welsh regiment; we're well known for our love of music) which gave concerts when they were given a break away from the front line. He brought the violin home and continued to play. When she was old enough, my mother, then my eldest sister and 10 years later, I learned to play on it. I swapped to the viola a year or two later, and when she came home from her uni in - ironically - Germany, she took it with her. She's nearly 70 (still in Germany; celebrated her 50th anniversary with her German husband this year), and still plays it. I wish I could tell its original family that it's been very loved and used for over a hundred years by my family. 🎻❤️
@@Leonie-w1z actually, the UK was never in jeopardy in WW1. The Kaiser didn't want to continue the war, but bankers had other plans, got the US involved, and the US crushed Germany.
The thing about pilots and other airmen (i.e. actually up in the air) that really gets me is their constant shift between all the stuff they went through up in the air and relatively good accommodations and whatnot (for ww1 combat roles). Infantry would do a routine of rest > get to line > man the line > get to rest > wash, rinse, repeat. A process that unfolded over a month or so. Pilots oscillated between them in timeframes measured in days or hours. That had to do a number on people.
It's not really funny, but I laughed at the Stooge-esque mental image of throwing a brick at someone while flying past because of the sheer absurdity. 🤦🏻♀️😂
To put things in context, most of these men who fought in the two world wars, were of a similar age to the you tubers of today. I can not imagine the dreadful PTSD these poor young men & women suffered. I couldn't imagine the youths of today coping in such a hellish environment. My Great-grandfather fought in WW1, he was so traumatised by the experience that when he returned home, he was unable to hold down a job. He & his wife & children ended up in the workhouse, where he died. His son, my Grandfather, was a Sargent in WW2. I named my son in honour of these two heros of our family. This is a good video as usual from Be Amazed, but my only criticism is the slightly flippant commentary. Usually I love the commentary, but this just felt a tad disrespectful.
My grandfather was a flame thrower. The worst thing for him was having to get up to 6-8 feet of the enemy and burn them alive. The smell and screams messed with him the rest of his life. Sad.
I’m thinking we should probably stop using the expression “in the trenches” since the worst job I can imaginable likely doesn’t hold a candle to what these poor guys went through. What a miserable period to be in. WW1, the Great Depression, barely any time passed before WW2 started up.
9:42 This seems like you made untrue assumptions about how bicycle units would operate. I would presume bicycle units had it better than infantry without bicycles because they are more mobile. Just like their cavalry counterparts, they generally dismounted before engaging in combat. Not only would charging into gunfire while mounted make one unnecessarily vulnerable, but it would be particularly impractical to do so in the conditions of WWI trench warfare. Combat units generally used bicycles and horses to quickly deploy to where they need to be and then dismount before engaging the enemy. That beats running and marching.
If there was no dog in the trenches then yes the humans would be sent to chase rats which is kinda embarrassing when your comrades are like "I killed 69 enemies with just a lugger pistol and my bear hands" while your over here like "I chased rats, disgusting, dirty, rats."
This was excellent but so disturbing. The women were known as Canaries because of their yellow skin. They were frequently injured from losing a finger to eyesight to their lives. They remained seriously ill from the chemicals they worked with for the rest of their lives and the government failed to help them in any way at all. They were ignored and yet without them and the munitions they made, the war could not have been won. When you read their accounts it's horrific. Their sacrifice was much more extreme than they ever could realised at the start. As for the RAF, Blackadder covered that, their WW1 series made more people aware of the situations faced. 18 hours... Horrific 😔 And still man creates war 😔 This video was really well thought out, good information too to go look into more detail over certain jobs. I was never into the military aspects of WW1 and WWII but found the unusual jobs, the work of women and how the UK kept going, Home Front wise particularly for WWII to be fascinating. Maybe because my generation grew up with grandparents who fought in the war. I actually write for the Mass Observation, which was started in WWII. Anyway, excellent video Be Amazed ❤
The fun thing about the Italian Human Torpedo is the fact that it is still used today by the Italian Navy (a modern model, but the same pronciples). We call it "Maiale" (Pig)
Catching rats with bare hands is dangerous you can get infection and rabies from bites. Rats have painful bites Hit ler was bicycle crew WW1 and messenger
Yeah, these are all pretty horrific jobs, but I'm just saying, this was war. Is there a such thing as a good job during war? You would be pretty hard pressed to find one.
*OBJECTION*!!! Our country was easily taken by troops on bicycles 20 years after WW1, so it was definitely a good role. Compared to the rest, it was surely horrific still.
Considering what was at stake in WW1 you'd think the higher ups would do everything to ensure that their soldier had better and more humane living conditions and equipment.
There was a commander in the army who, when informed there was a couple of men sick in a train load of soldiers ordered the entire train to head out regardless without even quaranting the obviously sick men. By the time the train reached its destination a full 80% of the men were sick and a full 25% of those sick died en route. The worst enemies in the world are the ones that are both in front and behind us. If someone asks you to give up or sacrifice something, tell them to go first and if they do tell them good for you that's your choice, not mine, bye.
I have a quick question do you have to do things like sign papers so you could get this kind of information I'm just asking because your storys are wow your like a history teacher😊😊
Now, there are rules of war to NOT shoot at parachuting soldiers. Those rules where written down after WWI, with the penning of the Geneva Convention. Oops ! That's post WWII.
I'm happy to not live in any war and hope that will stay that way for my entire life, even though the chances of that wish getting fulfilled unfortunately seem scarily low right now…
