The characters never got any development. Especially Serena. Blair was the only one who grew through the series and seemed to get over her obsession with Chuck. Only the writers threw all that amazing growth out the window, and had her be the same snob and crawl right back to Chuck. It was frustrating to say the least.
Gossip Girl was weird... I never got over that Lily went back to the Husband who LIED ABOUT HER CANCER TO TRICK HER INTO ENDING HER MARRIAGE! I forgive the show of everything but THAT.

@@melissamwidman what if toxicity of someone is not determined by their zodiac sign but their childhood, life experiences and environment of people they are surrounded by? Is it possible that any zodiac sign can be toxic because it's not about your sign but you being an imperfect human?
I HATED that William got a happy ending. Literally the worst character alongside Jack Bass, and even Jack had some redeemable qualities. William literally gave Lily fake cancer, lied to everyone, ran away from the law, used Ivy and literally lied to Lily again.
I totally agree. It infuriates me that her and Rufus were together for the majority of the show and then break up at the end. Lily and Rufus should have stayed together
Dan idealized Serena along with Nate and everyone else, but of all of them Blair is the most sympathetic character she’s awful but she’s the only one who works hard.
Actually Blair’s character is really more likable and “relatable” than Serena is. The way the show always portrayed her as the bad between her and Serena makes me so mad because they show you how she works so hard for what she wants just to throw that effort away by giving everything to Serena even if she don’t deserves it. And its funny how Blair is more remembered and iconic right now than Serena the “protagonist”
@@yukijames1321 The show's decline started after season 2 when the writers had to come up with their own storylines since the novel series ended with them graduating high school aka season 2's finale. CMIIW.
Gossip Girl peaked when Chuck sold Blair for a hotel. It perfectly embodies the toxicity of that relationship; it’s almost poetic. That was great and you can’t change my mind.
I'm still so bitter about the fact that Dan and Blair did not end up together! They were the only couple that was actually healthy. They went from frenemies to friends to lovers. It was a beautifully developed relationship, and the writers ruined it for the sake of fan-service.
@M Muss they were working, but then Blair made the wonderful decision to choose chuck the awesome dude who sold her for a hotel. I understand why Dan was so bitter towards Blair in season 6, he was there for her through everything in season 5 only to get dropped for an abusive, manipulative basshole
Everyone loves Nate but he pissed me off too!! Like how he literally had sex with Blair’s best friend while they were together then expected Blair to just forgive him instantly. Then when Blair had sex with chuck when her and Nate broke up Nate hated and didn’t speak to either of them for like 8 episodes. He’s a hypocrite
I was watching the first episode a few days ago I hated how all the blame was put on Serena like I know she messed up but like she wasn't the only one involved
Fr and in the first 2 season he was just a complete whore he slept with like every character, later seasons did redeem him imo but man he was insufferable the first few seasons and i hated him so much
Tbh I was surprised by how well I liked Dan and Blair! They openly talked about their needs and actually made each other a better person. I also thought it developed organically through their friendship.
Never seen a single episode of Gossip Girl. So I was very shocked when at the 23/25 minute mark its revealed all he's talked about was only the 1st season.
lmao ikr the show is v nonstop action, and i often can only watch a couple episodes at once before taking a breather that the characters seem to never get.
I realised this when I watched the show for the second time and, first, could not remember multiple of these significant story lines and (mainly), second, I kept realising just how many partners (that I also would never be able recall) 3 of the main cast members had that disappeared within a few episodes
Serena was the most annoying character out of the whole show, it pains me that it seems like she was meant to be the favourite of the show. Any character development she gained would be lost almost immediately the next episode. Most of her storylines revolved around who she was dating, whilst the others at least seemed to have careers, some sort of goals etc. She gained all of her high ranking jobs without even trying to get them in comparison to Blair who actually worked hard. She appeared to base who she was in love with whoever guy was not giving her attention in that moment.
At the end of season 5 I could barely watch her. Getting jealous of Blaire for dating Dan despite before that Serena shows no interest in him what so ever . I wish they gave her redeeming moments. Blaire I love , she’s bittersweet she owns up to her actions and doesn’t try go behind serenas back.
@@yasmeenaya I agree completely, it felt like she was the writers favourite because no matter what she did everyone would still love her. It didn't even make sense because she was barely there for the others and acted like a child most of the time
M NIght I can barely finish the show she’s on my nerves so much . You can tell the actors are sick of the show around season 5 as well. The acting is atrocious . The writing is terrible . There’s way to much going on . I’m confused with the chucks parents story line , the ivy Lola Charlie story .
M NIght in the book it’s kinda like that . I’m only a few hundred pages in but Serena is very self centred and has difficulty admitting her wrongs unlike blaire . She hurts others, unintentionally due to horrid parenting and her golden lifestyle .
All of Serena’s arcs are her making bad decisions, the group going “you’re making a bad decision” Serena going “You don’t understand!” And then Serena getting slapped in the face when that decision ends up being bad.
DONT get me wrong, I HATE Jenny and LOVE Blair, buut... it pisses me off so much that all of a sudden Blair become the head of a fashion house when she literally had no knowledge of actual design, while Jenny gets exiled from NY and she was always the one with the dream and passion to be a fashion designer
Jenny wasn’t exiled, she left because she wanted to. Blair even asks her to help her find Juliet, but she declines. Had she done so, she would have been forgiven, at least by Blair.

I have a friend who keeps insisting she knew Dan was Gossip Girl from the beginning and I am just like "honey - the showrunners didn't even know Dan was gossip girl from the beginning!
People are always saying that YOU's Joe is a stalker version of Gossip Girl's Dan. But they are wrong. You made me realize that Dan was always supposed to evolve to Joe hahah Who else tracks the whole city's secrets to get closer to a girl's world?
I just started watching You a couple days ago, right after finishing Gossip Girl for my first, (and only), time, and I made this exact observation to my fianceé. Same annoying ownership of being a misunderstood artist, same creepy behavior, but.......... naturally amplified. The one thing I wondered throughout the whole GG series was how Gossip Girl planned to use her skillset, (which, as gross as it is to admit, "she" had people at the edge of their seats, and that is a skillset), in the rest of life. YOU feels like a spinoff of GG.
Dan IRL has a band where the lyrics are like "I'm gonna kidnap you and tie you up in my basement" so maybe that's literally just him and he's not acting lol
It makes perfect sense: Dan turns 30 and realizes he still doesn’t fit in. Serena has already divorced him and moved on with Carter-classic! That’s when he becomes Joe. His entire backstory is fabricated, written on a completely different blog, because Gossip Girl died along with Tumblr.
From the beginning Dan wasn’t Gossip girl, it was suppose to be Eric but an article was released pointing all the evidence to Eric; the watchers started speculating. I guess from that point or somewhere along the seasons they changed it to Dan
Massiel Contreras They should’ve kept GG as Eric even if people found out. I feel like they dragged it for 6 seasons, cause they were unsure of who it was gonna be after Eric
It was obvious it was Dan! They knew it from the beginning. Just watch the intro with the theme song, he even appears in front of his computer/notebook and you can see GG page...
It's mad because Serena's past was always her present. She would continue down the same entitled path. If you really thought you killed someone do you think you deserve some new Prada shoes and a homecoming queen? What? THAT's what is on your mind? She was by far the WORST character from the very first episode. With Jenny a close second. I hated the college arc. She knew she didn't want Brown that much - but she took it away from Blair anyway. Then she threw it in Blair's face about Yale when you only got in based on her lifestyle and status. Yes, Blair is kind of shallow and she wanted that kind of acceptance too but her grades also mattered. She actually attended school. And you could see that whilst her status meant everything to her, so did her integrity (in some contexts) and reputation as a smart well educated young woman. Serena was just trash and threw herself at everyone she met because she had nothing to offer but good looks and money. I always found it strange how she had multiple 'I am in LOVE with this guy I met 3 days ago' and Blair only had 3 serious love interests. The Prince, Chuck and possibly Dan - and I wouldn't even see Dan as serious in this, forget about Nate. Even Blairs relationships with others were more dynamic, like with her maid (her name is lost), her relationship with Jenny and Vanessa was always funny, Chuck's Uncle. It actually frustrated me that Blair always wanted Serena's position and Serena thought she was better than Blair when Blair herself is an outstanding character.
Chenoa H. serena would always screw people over but then go absolutely mad when someone did something to her that was a minor inconvenience and disappear on a coke bender for 3 months. literally one of the worst tv characters ever in the history of tv characters. no depth whatsoever, just i’m blonde and i have first world problems and i expect everyone to fall in line for me.
@@alexare7948 y’all are both right. But not cos one is better than the other but bc by the end, their relationship made no sense and so much went down that their chemistry fizzed out
Nate: Sleeps with Serena despite having been dating Blair since they were children. Lies to her about it for like a year Blair: Sleeps with Chuck while broken up with Nate and doesn't tell him for a few weeks. Nate: "I'm done with you, wtf" No yeah, those are equal.
For all the stupid shenanigans, the show has a structure. The first three seasons are around Serena and the last three about Blair. At first, Blair is the villain, and then we learn her perspective and Serena does villainous things. Also Ivy Dickens took over Jenny's 'reign chaos' storyline.
Weirdly enough I really liked Ivy Dickens, I feel like her entire character changed after season 5 for no reason whatsoever. They just wanted an antagonist, and chose ivy of all people.
What bothered me almost the most was the double standard of Rufus. Almost every fight he had with jenny was about something that Dan (at the same age!) has been allowed to do.
@@foreverandalways286 It's understandable to be mad at guerilla fashion shows and selling drugs, but besides that, Rufus never accepted the fact that Jenny wanted to start working as a fashion designer. He also got made when she quit her job when Eleanor wanted to steal her designs which is heavily looked down upon in the fashion world.
@@yukijames1321 Actually, if you watched the show...Jenny didn't randomly want to stop doing Fashion. Jenny quit her first fashion job because Eleanor stole her design. Then, she wanted to create her own fashion line with her friend, but that friend took all her designs and burned them up when Jenny went to an interview with Tim Gunn without her. Jenny wasn't concerned about education because her dreams didn't necessarily need higher education. Though, you're right...higher education is never a bad thing and expands one's mind. Now that I'm looking back on this, I do agree Rufus was a good parent.
Yuki James Rufus needed to treat Jenny more like an adult rather than a child. Truly listening and heeding her point of view, even if he disagreed vehemently (mutual respect). Jenny was being bullied, wanting to leave school early to avoid bullies and she was on the right career path, originally he didn’t give her permission to pursue her passion. Rufus meant well giving her everything he didn’t have and she needed to leave his life plan behind, to start to forge her own destiny.
Yuki James The way I see things is Jenny felt inferior as she was poorer in contrast to her wealthy pupils at her private school 🏫. She compared herself to people who were better than her 💰, which affected her self esteem because of the peer pressure to keep up with the pricey lifestyle. The Humphrey’s, are rich by most people’s standards yet are likely to feel poor because everyone they know is richer. Jenny’s belongingness lead to changes in behaviour because she adapted the dress and mannerism of the group in order to fit in, she tried to adapt to a world that’s not her own and the hard reality is that you’ll never fit in where you don’t belong. Jenny lost her sense of self, she no longer acted like herself. She dealt with the belief that everyone around her hates her, “everybody hates me” It’s an easy feeling to indulge and dwell on, a terrible go-to self-attack in low moments when we feel isolated, depressed, anxious or insecure.
She was the best part of Gossip Girl. She was the only one who did shit for herself. Like she almost had a fashion line twice but it was destroyed by a Syco chic and then Blair. Now she works for the girl that crushed her dreams. Real happy ending.
blake lively is charming enough to distract you from serena's awfulness. my only real qualm with blair is how she talks to dorota. imagine the verbal abuse having to work for her. i only like chuck in relation to blair. nate isn't bad, he just falls in love with everyone. dan is pretentious and judgey. he's not unkind, just thinks he's way better than what he is. it'd be better if they spent more time on characterization. the flaws are glaring, but goddammit i still watch this show.
blair and dorota were bestfriends. they loved each other and dorota loved her and it wasnt a torture or anything. like have you even watched the serie?
I'm biased towards Dan and Blair. Because unlike Chuck and Blair, you actually see them liking each other. There isn't a lot of sexual chemistry, unlike Chuck and Blair. But they have such realistic moments. Chuck and Blair talk about their great love and it's epicness, but they, just, SUCK. Like they are so hurtful to each other, it's really gross. I just liked that they could be normal together. Their love of films and literature, their playful banter, the genuine friendship that was forming between them, the fact that they understood each other struggles. Blair was rich, but never the slacker. Let's not forget that they were the obvious mirror to Rufus and Lily. The way Blair kept showing up on Dan's door was how Lily kept showing up at Rufus's door. And honestly with Chuck she was always a shell of her former self. I don't even like Blair, but want better than Chuck for her.
Dan and Blair were adorable! They didn't have the intensity and angst that Chuck and Blair had, but that's what made them so great! I loved their playful and witty banter. You're so right! Dan actually inspired Blair to be her best self. She was mature and confident with him, rather than the bratty scheme queen she was with Chuck.
Right, they brought the best out of each other too. A partnership is more than love and passion, which is all Chuck and Blair shared. They lacked nearly all of the other assets of a healthy, beneficial, relationship. It's a shame how they did Dan and Blair, even how they ruined their friendship after the break up. It's like they just reversed all of the character development they spent tons episodes building 💀
Dan deserves better than her. She was literally a bully who made his and his sister's lives hell. I never wanted Dan to forgive her for what she did to Jenny. As for people saying she grew up when she was with Dan, what growth are you exactly referring to? She used him as a crutch to recover from the lowest phase in her life
Your ending is 1000% better than what they actually did lmao. Yes to Dan and Blair, yes to Serena being unable to settle down, yes to Nate not dating a minor, yes to Chuck all alone (hopefully in prison).
I love gossip girl - for the drama, manipulations, secrets and of course, fashion. But in real life I hate most of these things and eye roll when people gossip and those exact things.
Back in the 2000s these type of shows were everywhere and I remember quite a lot of them. You should do one on big time rush. That was a very interesting live action show.

THANK YOU for the *detailed* warning. The stuff you mentioned is upsetting but not harmful to me (like it won't set off panic attacks hearing sexual assault described without warning), but there are other things that I would rather be warned about. And knowing in what context those mentions will come up really does matter. Also, that whistling theme song got used in some ads for something in the UK and I'm trying to figure out what but it's SO 2000S
Hey Billiam keep doing videos like this I'm super into it. Also give the show Skins a check , UK teen drama that would make for an amazing video/video series
I never thought I would see a video about Gossip Girl that I completely agree with all the points made. I remember growing up watching the O.C and then stopping after Melissa died. I honestly believe that Gossip Girl is the best teen drama because there is not one likeable character. However, I have watched the entire series three times and to this day every time I see Rufus or Lily on screen it annoys me.
The most horrifying thing about this show for me personally is that Taylor Momsen, who played Jenny, was actually 14/15 when she played this role, while everyone else (including Chucks and Nates actors) was like 18-20. Makes this assault scene double horrifying
The first season of gossip girl is great. The writing is funny, clever and sharp, the character dynamics are brilliant and the commentary on class is really clever. I think that the rest of the seasons lost a little of what maked it great originally.
I think that’s to be expected because they put a lot of effort into season 1. You can feel a different atmosphere in season 1 than the rest because of how the characters are introduced and building our opinions of them.
Monica Creator the only thing they ever did was give him a cougar fetish and that was literally it. Which is strange because Chace is super hot but... they really didn’t do anything for him
Poor Nate he only served to date the girls that will later bring trouble in the season. He was really humble and hard working, i dear to say that he was more likable than Dan (who is supposedly the humble one). He wasn’t that bland, but rather a character stuck in the same plot over and over again that sadly wasn’t portrayed in a way he could stood out more than being the right guy who also dates any girl. Definitely deserved better cuz he end up alone after everything he went through lmao
Thank you so much acknowledging the value of Jennys arc in season 2!!! Everyone hates jenny cuz of the final seasons but completely forgets what a great character she was
I saw another video that made a great point: Jenny’s arc, while insufferable to watch, is actually a great visual of what happens when you are TOO driven by ambition
She is consistently behaving and actually has some consequences for bad behavior and she moves on! the only character that grows up. Nothing she does is as bad as anyone else I don't understand why anyone would hate her
My wife got super into Gossip Girl when it hit netflix. We only had one tv at the time, so that meant I did, too. The only things that stuck with me were... 1. The main character, Serena, gets pushed aside by the show, for her best friend Blair and the relationship with Chuck. 2. The nice guy character, Dan Humphrey... I have a fun head cannon where he begins in the movie Easy A, where he's a nice guy watching a girl's life fall apart from a distance. Then he swoops in as her personal hero. Then he moves away and takes his part in Gossip Girl. Then after that he moves away and goes into hiding after destroying his life. Now in the netflix series You, he is a bookstore owner who gets obsessed with and stalks women. It's like watchling a guy's slow descent into full psychosis over years.
i'm a dude that started to watch gossip girl cause of my Gf back then but kept watching it even after i broke up with her , and i also ate 60 chiken nuggets because of bets with friends ... that analogy at the start ... it hit close to home, like reaaaally close lmao
Dan being gossip girl really doesn't make sense to me. So many times he's just standing there like wUt during blasts. Many of them sabotage his motives too. Also what about in season 4 when Blair and Dan email gossip girl to ask for Juliet's location? That deosn't make sense at all. He's standing there as 'gossip girl' emails back. Also why would he waste time if he already knew, or suggest the idea in the first place?
I chuck up to gate into the story and also no speculate that it was him. Its like what happened in Scream movies . The killer pretends to be one of the victims even go far as harming themself so one thinks its them. Its like saying " How can i be the killer when i was hurt as well." Dan did that but in a long game way. Plus the whole with GG is people was always sending in tips on stuff seen/herad all the time. Example Serena is first introduced in the the show a random extra is the one send the tip in even tho dan was already there to see her. Also it does kind of make sense given how they showed use GG
Let’s not forget the post when Blair gives Jenny the 5pm train ticket after destroying her chance with Tim Gunn. Dan is present during the Blair giving Jenny the ticket and blast that happens literally 10 seconds after. Chuck calls after blast as Blair just walked away. When in the hell did Dan blast that out?! Never on his phone or computer so who the hell blasted it out? Jenny also knew he was GG by then but she is next to Dan the whole time crying so she couldn’t have highjacked and blast out as GG either. Explain who is the REAL GG?
Between this video, Jenny Nicholson's video on Vampire Diaries, and my own experiences watching Riverdale, truly it cannot be overstated how much CW Teen Dramas Is The Same. Like straight up they're even recycling whole plotlines between these shows.
@@propogandalf To be honest everyone was the gossip girl. Thy all sent hints and tips to GG. GG should have been some random ass nobody and never brought up.
Hot damn, Gossip Girl has the equivalent of 3 episodes worth of modern day drama shows in _the first episode_ . This'll be a ride. Edit: Season 2 is somehow even crazier. Edit: Holy shit, I feel like *I* need to be drunk.
Blake Lively is PART of why I found Selena so insufferable because she has this constant look on her face like she doesn't know what is going on, while at the same time trying to pull up that "pouting parted lips magazine look".
I felt she was the wrong choice for Serena tbh. Serena was supposed to be this this naive girl with a penchant for fun and a lot of heart, but Blake was just this innocent goody-two-shoes who tried to make an impression that she's a party girl... I didn't buy it at all.
@@NyxieMayn maybe she was asked to do that pose like as she was the 'cool/IT' girl, Blair was the 'Snob/mean girl' so their expressions won't be the same, as they are acting.. told to act this way and directed. Directors could have asked her to do more expressions if they wanted.
That chicken nugget metaphor is the most painfully accurate metaphors ever. I decided to give it a try and I DEVOURED the first two seasons, half way through season 3 I lost all interest yet I’m still watching...?
"serena is probably the most insufferable character on the show" "chuck is probably the most insufferable character on the show" "dan is probably the most insufferable character on the show "
What you said about Serena is soooo true ! She wants to convince herself she is a good person, because she does realise her mistakes (often too late) and does want to change BUT she Never does !!! This is who she is. She's not a good person. And honestly nobody really is in that show x) but most of them Know who they are. And I love Blair and Chuck but YES, the true meant to be couple of the show was Lily and Rufus !!! I'll ALWAYS be pissed they didnt end up together ! forever pissed.
Riverdale is *literally* a Gossip Girl rip-off. Even the characters are mirrors of each other. Serena as Betty, Blair as Veronica, Nate as Archie, Eleanor as Hermione (leaving/wanting to leave Blair/Veronica's father), Lilly as Alice, Rufus as FP, Jughead as Dan, Jenny as Jellybean, Dan's mom (couldn't bother to remember her name) as Gladys, Georgina as Cheryl, maybe even Chuck as Reggie (liking Veronica/Blair, having daddy issues), though he is the only one that doesn't exactly fit.
Riverdale is much more cringy though. Gossip girl at least had the rich kids vibe going on which made you "Uhm could they actually do what they do in real life? maybe yes cause they're incredibly rich."
That is disturbingly correct, which makes me sad. Archie is supposed to be about down to earth relatable teens going through goofy but understandable teen hijinks. Also Jughead was like the only asexual character I was aware of in popular media for the longest time, so seeing that be taken away for shitty teen drama is disheartening. If they wanted to do Gossip Girl 2, they should have done Gossip Girl 2.0. Everyone ends up married and successful (except for nate, poor bastard. Too be fair he deserves better than anyone in the main cast anyways), so have it follow their kids who are also up to dramatic bullshit.
I love how you talk about how trashy Gossip Girl is for like 55 minutes straight and then you reveal that you actually really love Gossip Girl.😂 I kind of feel the same way about it though. I know that the stuff happening in it is not realistic at all and it's totally not ok to do the things they did, but I still enjoy watching it because you can escape into a different world while watching it.
omg NOOOO gossip girl despite how problematic it is was a well-written show for the most part. riverdale literally tries to copy each gossip girl character into a weird pseudo freudian alt universe where the characters are fake 50s inspo copies of gossip girl characters lol
"its trash, but i haven't been able to stop thinking about it in over 7 years" is the BEST description of Gossip Girl. ill always remember where i was when chuck bass was shot lol. its like comfort tv except its because you borderline-hate all of the characters. the best way i can describe it is It's always Sunny (like Billiam says) meets Love Island
I remember when girls in my grade were watching this and ralk about it really loudly in between classes. Only experiencing the show through snippets of gossip seems very fitting. One time I walked in on one if them completely scandalized, screaming "I can't believe Daniel just LEFT her! What about the baby?" and for a horrible second I thought she was talking about the Daniel from our class, before I remembered that they just got really passiobate about a TV show sometimes.
ok sweaty serena didn't kill the guy at boarding school she killed him right after the sheperd wedding after sleeping with nate and before leaving town. xo
I love how you called like three characters in a row 'the most insufferable character on the show'. It really kind of encapsulates the series I think. (Despite all this... I love it.)
Curse you, Billiam. Because of the quarantine, you knew that we would all just barely be bored enough to watch a 1 hour video of you talking about Gossip Girl. ... and you knew this opportunity would never present itself again.
As someone who just rewatched/ finally finished this show, I needed this video! You perfectly articulated so many things that I felt while making my way through Gossip Girl. I hated it, but couldn't stop watching it at the same time because really some part of me loved it. It drove me crazy but I had to know what the ending was. This is so thorough and well thought out, and for that, I say thank you sir. And well done!~
I hate this theory so much. She would never do that to Blair + she’s an adult character who’s also not rich. She just works for rich people. She would be fired if she was found out and probably has a lot more to lose than the actual teens in the show
Can this please be an annual april 1st thing? Taking a show like this outside you normal content and dissecting it. I have watched this video over 10 times, there is something really soothing about it.
I love gossip girl, but I love it on a superficial level. The creators of the show said that they wanted the show to be like a magazine, the clothes, the places they go to. That said, there is no doubt about it, the writers were smoking crack, as the show goes on, the story lines get more convoluted and ridiculous. Especially the reveal of gossip girl. But hey at least it’s better than riverdale
There was also someone trying to be Gossip Girl at my school just months before graduation with the same rumor. Luckily no one cared enough so it had no consequences for anyone. I'm surprised to hear that the show underperformed in its 1st season actually, it seems so almost-legendary in the trash TV genre among my age group.
I was never into shows like Gossip Girl when it aired. I thought I was too mature for it. But once it was on Netflix, I tried 3 times to watch it, before finally getting hooked. It has taken me over 4 years to watch halfway through season 5. I keep having to take breaks because I cannot handle all of the drama. It just becomes too much. I do this with other shows too, like Buffy and Friends. But with those shows, I get too attached to the characters and when they make bad decisions and such, I get physically upset and have to stop watching for a long, long time. But I always go back because I love the characters and the interactions and the growth that they go through. Not quite so with Gossip Girl. The characters in Gossip Girl are the sole reason I come back to finish it. They make terrible decisions, they do terrible things, terrible things happen to them and they all get happy endings, even though they don't make much sense. Gossip Girl is the definition of a guilty pleasure show. You know that you shouldn't like it but you do. You can enjoy the suffering of the characters because we are lesser than them. It gives us validation that we are inherently better people than them. Although, Dan Humphrey is the proof that we are not very different from them after all. And he still gets what he wants. So basically, no consequences for anyone or anything. Also, I initially forced myself to watch the show solely because of Taylor Momsen. They had to write her out of the show because she wanted to focus on her band, which I do think is a shame because I really liked Jenny as character. Watching her spiral was great and could have been epic if it had not been cut short. I also can't help but love Georgina Sparks. I kind of wish there were more of her throughout the show. I love that she antagonizes everyone. She is like the dark side in all of the characters but she doesn't have a soul so she doesn't care about all of the horrible things she does. It's so much fun.
I remember watching the first episode, seeing the end with Dan on his laptop looking at gossip girl, and I thought that was supposed to mean he was gossip girl, and it took me until the end of the series before I realized it wasn't intended to mean that
The real gossip girl was the awful people we met along the way.

This is actually ACCURATE. All those awful people are gossip girl Because they submitted gossip about each other to bring each other down

Dan idealized Serena along with Nate and everyone else, but of all of them Blair is the most sympathetic character she’s awful but she’s the only one who works hard.
I think Blair is probably the most likable
Actually Blair’s character is really more likable and “relatable” than Serena is. The way the show always portrayed her as the bad between her and Serena makes me so mad because they show you how she works so hard for what she wants just to throw that effort away by giving everything to Serena even if she don’t deserves it. And its funny how Blair is more remembered and iconic right now than Serena the “protagonist”
Anon Ymous i get the one dimensional character cuz it serves as a self insert for the viewer but Serena doesn’t even serve as that lmao

Gossip Girl peaked when Chuck sold Blair for a hotel. It perfectly embodies the toxicity of that relationship; it’s almost poetic. That was great and you can’t change my mind.
Tamara Dobson and somehow chuck made her feel guilty for it and blamed her. chuck is the worst character
I'm still so bitter about the fact that Dan and Blair did not end up together! They were the only couple that was actually healthy. They went from frenemies to friends to lovers. It was a beautifully developed relationship, and the writers ruined it for the sake of fan-service.
i agree, it was almost poetic
@M Muss they were working, but then Blair made the wonderful decision to choose chuck the awesome dude who sold her for a hotel. lmao ikr the show is v nonstop action, and i often can only watch a couple episodes at once before taking a breather that the characters seem to never get.
Every time I watch the show I’m stunned by how much happens in season one alone.
I think Blake Lively herself has said that the character is a terrible role model for young girls.

Yeah, he's not a new version, he's just a natural progression
I absolutely hate that "twist" it doesn't make sense to me, i watch season 4 and 5 on Netflix never watched 6, and not going to ever.
Massiel Contreras They should’ve kept GG as Eric even if people found out. I feel like they dragged it for 6 seasons, cause they were unsure of who it was gonna be after Eric
they should’ve just left it anonymous, but they already did that for no reason in the season 2 finale
Wow i can't believe gossip girl beat game of thrones to the punch with that one.
I agree, except about the Jenny part but does anyone actually prefer Serena over Blair. I haven't come across anyone who has.
Chenoa H. serena would always screw people over but then go absolutely mad when someone did something to her that was a minor inconvenience and disappear on a coke bender for 3 months. literally one of the worst tv characters ever in the history of tv characters. no depth whatsoever, just i’m blonde and i have first world problems and i expect everyone to fall in line for me.

What bothered me almost the most was the double standard of Rufus. Almost every fight he had with jenny was about something that Dan (at the same age!) has been allowed to do.
@@yukijames1321 yeah I'm pretty sure Dan never sold drugs or had a gorilla fashion show
@@foreverandalways286 It's understandable to be mad at guerilla fashion shows and selling drugs, but besides that, Rufus never accepted the fact that Jenny wanted to start working as a fashion designer.
She dealt with the belief that everyone around her hates her, “everybody hates me” It’s an easy feeling to indulge and dwell on, a terrible go-to self-attack in low moments when we feel isolated, depressed, anxious or insecure.
blair and serena’s relationship is so toxic

I don't even like Blair, but want better than Chuck for her.
this is soooo true

Makes this assault scene double horrifying
she said in interviews that when they filmed the pilot (where the assault happened), she was only twelve. TWELVE

Explain who is the REAL GG?
creators with more free time breaking format and just talking at length about shit they like is the quarantine content i crave
Between this video, Jenny Nicholson's video on Vampire Diaries, and my own experiences watching Riverdale, truly it cannot be overstated how much CW Teen Dramas Is The Same. Like straight up they're even recycling whole plotlines between these shows.
I will forever be disappointed by how they treated Eric, Vanessa, Dorota and Lily.
Honestly fuck Vanessa and Lily. Vanessa was annoying and Lily was entitled and awful
Dan wasn't supposed to be GG, but too many fans speculated that it was Eric so the writers had to change it
Wasn't it supposed to be Nate?
It shouldn't have been any of them!
@@propogandalf To be honest everyone was the gossip girl. Thy all sent hints and tips to GG. GG should have been some random ass nobody and never brought up.
But Dan makes way more sense than Eric?
Dan cant be Gossip girl
Hot damn, Gossip Girl has the equivalent of 3 episodes worth of modern day drama shows in _the first episode_ . This'll be a ride.
Edit: Season 2 is somehow even crazier.
Edit: Holy shit, I feel like *I* need to be drunk.
HAHAHAHA omg love this comment so much, keep the updates coming
Well now this is all we want from you. Do more, stuff like Degrassi and Skins.
One tree hill
Blake Lively is PART of why I found Selena so insufferable because she has this constant look on her face like she doesn't know what is going on, while at the same time trying to pull up that "pouting parted lips magazine look".
I personally like Blake Lively but why is this comment so true 😂😂 she always did try to look sexy and pull a “vogue” face while acting 💀
Yes, i HATED her acting so so so much!
"Serena killed someone with Harriet the Spy" lmfaoooo thank you for that
The laugh track after "i killed someone" ended me tbh
Same lol
Billiam: “…social gatherings…”
Me: “Wait that’s illegal!!!”
That chicken nugget metaphor is the most painfully accurate metaphors ever. I decided to give it a try and I DEVOURED the first two seasons, half way through season 3 I lost all interest yet I’m still watching...?
Power through it. Wait till you get to the thing that defines the Chair relationship
@@cnanden was it chuck selling blair for a hotel?
"serena is probably the most insufferable character on the show"
"chuck is probably the most insufferable character on the show"
"dan is probably the most insufferable character on the show "
What you said about Serena is soooo true !
Like I get what you were doing but... no
That is disturbingly correct, which makes me sad.
@@janmil5630 Agree 100%, tbh I actually liked Gossip Girl and Riverdale-not so much
love for klaylope family before GG there was the OC, Serena had the same troubles as Marissa except less tragic.
I love how you talk about how trashy Gossip Girl is for like 55 minutes straight and then you reveal that you actually really love Gossip Girl.😂
I kind of feel the same way about it though. I know that the stuff happening in it is not realistic at all and it's totally not ok to do the things they did, but I still enjoy watching it because you can escape into a different world while watching it.
I think everyone who loves this show knows it's pretty trash. It's not gonna be Mad Men.
Off topic but do you have any other eventful shows to recommend. I've finished this one.
@@moon.937 there’s this spanish show called Elite, its even worse than gossip girl but its cool 😂😂😂😂
+1000 for this comment!
@@Mini-Toast_ I don’t agree I think it’s pretty amazing it doesn’t have to be Emmy worthy to be good
Gossip Girl crawled so Riverdale could Naruto run.
*gossip girl crawled so riverdale could trip and fall on it’s head
omg NOOOO gossip girl despite how problematic it is was a well-written show for the most part. riverdale literally tries to copy each gossip girl character into a weird pseudo freudian alt universe where the characters are fake 50s inspo copies of gossip girl characters lol
리나 lina don’t even get me started on their most recent musical episode
Gossip girl walked so riverdale could shit itself
Gossip Girl actually holds up considering the fact that it was over a decade ago, can’t confidently say the same for Riverdale’s future.
the love-hate relationship i had with this tv show was insane-
"its trash, but i haven't been able to stop thinking about it in over 7 years" is the BEST description of Gossip Girl. ill always remember where i was when chuck bass was shot lol. its like comfort tv except its because you borderline-hate all of the characters. the best way i can describe it is It's always Sunny (like Billiam says) meets Love Island
I watched this whole thing in almost one sitting. I think you won April Fools despite being 4 days late.
IM SO HAPPY YOU ENJOYED IT!! Thank you!! 😄😄
Nice to see you here
I really think he could dive into late aughts early 10s network dramas like this
I cannot tell you how many times I watched Gossip Girl. I at one point used to watch it with the fraternity brothers at my university
Evil people receiving everything they want is how it's supposed to work... because I'm Chuck Bass
I feel like no one talks about how pretty little liars was basically a carbon copy of this show
How
???????
I remember when girls in my grade were watching this and ralk about it really loudly in between classes. Only experiencing the show through snippets of gossip seems very fitting.
One time I walked in on one if them completely scandalized, screaming "I can't believe Daniel just LEFT her! What about the baby?" and for a horrible second I thought she was talking about the Daniel from our class, before I remembered that they just got really passiobate about a TV show sometimes.
ok sweaty serena didn't kill the guy at boarding school she killed him right after the sheperd wedding after sleeping with nate and before leaving town. xo
sohogrunge lol sweaty 😓 💦
“Pretend to remember” buddy i don’t think u realize how many of us were latchkey kids
Can we PLEASE get one on pretty little liars? Never even watched GG but i need more content like this! Or Gilmore Girls
If this video does well, Pretty Little Liars and the OC is what I want to do next
Billiam YES to the OC
In PLL when Caleb goes to ghost city and comes back changed wtf was THAT
How about One Tree Hill?
As an avid GG fan, I live to see it torn to shreds 😂😂
I love how you called like three characters in a row 'the most insufferable character on the show'. It really kind of encapsulates the series I think. (Despite all this... I love it.)
In the books, finding out who's gossip girl is a much more compeling element. However in the show it was painfully irrelevant.
It was never revealed in the books who gossip girl was.
@@alexare7948 should’ve stayed that way in the series
Curse you, Billiam.
Because of the quarantine, you knew that we would all just barely be bored enough to watch a 1 hour video of you talking about Gossip Girl.
... and you knew this opportunity would never present itself again.
“I am going to be your entrance into the terrible world of -
Me: Manhattan’s Eli-
-Gossip Girl.”
Me: oh..
Did not know Joe Goldberg had a snobby cousin in the same city.
And well done!~
same, i did watch it all at once in 2020 while getting increasingly frustrated with unhinged plot lines
I will never get over the fact that Darota was not Gossip Girl. It just makes so much more sense!
I hate this theory so much. She would never do that to Blair + she’s an adult character who’s also not rich. She just works for rich people. She would be fired if she was found out and probably has a lot more to lose than the actual teens in the show
I agree gossip girl is one of the most influential series. to the point most if not all south Jakartans adapt their lifestyle and even their accent.
I've never seen someone so casually shotgun a White Claw and then make an Animal Crossing reference 30 seconds later.
TBH, these kinds of deep dive drags are my jam.
Can this please be an annual april 1st thing? Taking a show like this outside you normal content and dissecting it.
I have watched this video over 10 times, there is something really soothing about it.
It had been 2 years and I still regularly come back and rewatch it.
So obviously i still stand by this statement.
Words cannot describe how much I absolutely love you for making an hour long video over analyzing a teen drama show from 2010.
We watch you for you . It doesnt matter what you talk about, you make it fun/interesting. Great video btw
Seeing this makes me want to see more of William.
P. S. I'd love a Smallville review.
S.R.A. Smallville was the shit particularly preseason 5
I’ve lost count on rewatching all of Smallville after the 12th viewing
Okay. Why is this so damn painfully accurate and why isn't 59 minutes enough?
I love gossip girl, but I love it on a superficial level. The creators of the show said that they wanted the show to be like a magazine, the clothes, the places they go to. That said, there is no doubt about it, the writers were smoking crack, as the show goes on, the story lines get more convoluted and ridiculous. Especially the reveal of gossip girl. But hey at least it’s better than riverdale
this video singlehandedly convinced me to watch all 6 seasons of gossip girl for the first time. thank u so much. xoxo.
My parents were so obsessed with this show, i was like 5 years old and they were on the couch eating popcorn and watching gossip girl on dvd
