    The driving comfort and ease of driving is the biggest thing most people are missing. Anyone who's had to drive a diesel semi for several years or more can tell you that the transmission shifting, the engine breaking, and the engine vibration takes a toll on the body. Also, all the cameras and autopilot features will absolutely prevent accidents and save lives. A hybrid diesel is better for long haul trips and places where you can't install point to point charging stations. But with a hybrid you could at least eliminate emmissions when driving in populated cities or while idiling in drop off and pick up areas. For the majority of shorter trips, the Teala semi will make more sense in the long run.

      @@massatube You are incorrect. Saff is 100% correct. Highway FSD is there. Highway driving is not much of a challenge for FSD, city driving is. If Tesla wants to 'apply' to suggest they are 100% FSD on the highway and were asked to prove it, they would likely make it today, but that is not what they are doing. They want to do FULL END TO END which is 10 X harder.
      My argument is for semi-driving, just being 100% on the highway is HUGE, and Tesla basically has that today

    • @cre8tvedge
      @cre8tvedge 19 дней назад +1

      New batteries are hitting the market now that increase the range of BEVs a good 33-40%. Add that on to the Tesla's 500 miles and your at 700 max, plenty enough to handle over the road especially when you have a recharge that in a 30 minute lunch break will add that same or more extra 200 miles. Pepsi has already done a day run over 1100 miles. No diesel hybrid needed. That removes all the maintenance problems attached to diesel.

      Met a retired truck driver at Great Basin National Park. When I told him about testing they did from the port of LA Long Beach to the warehouses inland noting how the drivers quoted said they loved how the BEV semis merged at the normal flow of light duty vehicles a look of shock went over his face. He replied that he was so stressed with navigating the heavy traffic as all the cars darted around cutting him off and such. He said he would have loved a truck that handled as an electric does with acceleration. My opinion is that's a key feature.

    • @FactsDontCareAboutFeelings-m6x
      @FactsDontCareAboutFeelings-m6x 19 дней назад +5

      @ I completely agree. It can be very stressful driving a big truck through heavy traffic congestion and having to keep your head on a swivel for safety’s sake. I see how well Tesla’s FSD has evolved in its passenger vehicles. Having that tech integrated in commercial vehicles will be a game changer. Not only that - the smooth acceleration and quietness of the cabin compared to a diesel truck would leave me feeling less mentally fatigued after 500-600 miles of driving per shift.

    50,000 is about a quarter of new sales a year in the US. That in the early days will be enough to get the supporting infrastructure up and running as the EV fleet expands. This is even more true as it is likely fleet sales will predominate and so the customers will be adding the infrastructure for themselves also. It is also highly likely that the 325 mile version will be the major number sold as most trips are much less than that. This will all make for a much easier and smoother adoption curve.

In the next 5 years or so ICE semis will no longer be able to compete. As FSD is added to Semis this will fundamentally change the worlds economy. Countries that fight FSD will inhibit their economies because there will always be many other countries who are ready and willing to use FSD.

    If Tesla were to cover their factory roofs with solar panels to power the Reno factories, the reduction in grid-power, which likely comes from Hoover Dam south of Vegas, there should be a significant amount of water saved that would otherwise be used in power generation by the dam's water turbine generators. Hoover's current long-term water shortage has virtually emptied the dam which also supplies drinking and irrigation water to Los Angeles, Southern California, and Arizona. If you go to Vegas, I highly recommend the dam tour which was extensive and very well done when I was there 20 years ago.

There are T-Rex type vehicles used for mining that are all electric and don't even need to be plugged in because they are so much heavier coming down the mountains loaded that they are able to recoup enough energy to drive back up unloaded.

Tesla, more than seven years after announcing their product are still in the testing and evaluation stage and while they have

That in most cases would not even share data with each other. That's why they suck.

One thing I can think of that's better is the door location can keep mud/dirt/water contained and the driving area clean and it's so far forward that it looks like it will be awesome as a sleeper. The only negative I can think of is can't stick your head out window to back up, but the camera systems will be so good I think it more than make up for it. That looks like it will be awkward at best. Not sure how/if the door position will help keep crud out. Didn't comment on that, but climbing up on the sissy bar on a typical truck is a great opportunity to deal with filth OUTSIDE the cab and that seems lost. However, like how comfortable the seat is, many details can't be known until people actually get to use them. I AGREE about the sleeper. With a cab forward location, I would think the entire tractor could be shorter and still give excellent sleeper function. I will point out that I expect fewer sleepers in the near future, but anything's possible. If they really did come up with auto-backup, that would be awesome.

      If the TS is successful, I could imagine an ecosystem of shippers developing who would provide charging while the TS is at their door in exchange for some credit on their shipping costs. Regarding the missing megawatt charging network, it seems to me the best approach would be to simply add backup battery packs to existing stations, vs upgrading substations or battery swapping like they do in china. That way you charge the ground based batteries in the background so they can discharge at 1 mw when needed. Also takes care of utility demand peaks, just like tesla is selling to utilities, they might as well do it themselves two birds with one stone. Otoh as said before I think utilities need to change and expand their offerings to include operating charging stations. It's the logical progression.
    But actually the large capacity tesla semis with 500miles range do not need a megawatt charger, since that is typically enough range for a trucker's allowed daily drive time, ie can charge when asleep. Which of course is by design.
    Also, us truck transportation is 25% of total traffic, so the personal vehicle ev transition is more important and it doesn't matter so much how much slower trucking adoption is.

    They should go with a battery swap model so they can charge at slower rates because running 1.2MW of new powerline per charger will be expensive.

      Not a bad idea, but something tells me Tesla has already considered and rejected it. The engineers at Tesla know what they are doing. The prove it all the time.

      No, the Tesla Semi does not currently have a sleeper berth, but Tesla has said it could be easily converted. The Semi was designed for day trips. I'm sure when the charging network rolls out more all that will happen since charging only takes 30 minutes

    There is one huge problem here that no one is addressing including Congress. There are already brownouts and blackouts in areas of the country where AI Farms are sucking up all the electricity. If 50 - 100,000 Tesla trucks get on the road where is the electricity to charge them going to come from? Obama wanted to upgrade to a Smart grid over 10 years ago but Congress is owned by the petroleum industry. Without renewable electrical generation stations in an upgraded smart grid the semis are great and all but they have no fuel. I love the concept but there are problems that are not being addressed that Congress does not want to address

      The roadster has 620 miles of range, the semi has 500 which is one charge and your in Florida from Ohio. They are a few changes away from it being viable across all states . After 1,000 miles then you can’t drive anymore your over your hours.

    Unveiling in 2017
    Production should have started in 2019
    By the end of 2022 only a few produced, mainly as driving billboards and public beta test for Pepsi and Tesla.
    Now the mass production is planned to start at the end of 2026, so actually getting one before 2027 is highly unlikely.
    And to power these behemoths we basically need new nuclear power plants and extreme grid infrastructure able to handle the load thousands of currently non-existent MegaWatt chargers.
    I really hope that this will work out better and faster than I expect it to, but I won't hold my breath.
