I watch this scene quite often. It’s gotten me through some tough times. I relate to his pain when he spoke to the snake; how it feels to be lonely and not feel loved.
I find it interesting that the lion says the temptation of a woman and a family is small, when that is the one which clearly emotionally affected him the most
Wanting to hear God’s voice in a way that is easy to discern resonates. I have made similar demands of God during my walk. I picture myself not unlike a child learning to swim with a parent.
The Christians misunderstood this film. It portrayed Christ his temptation from the desert to the cross..finding out who he was divine as well. Then on the cross Satan tempts him shows him what his life would be if he was just be a man and not savior. But he rejects that and accepts his role as son of God and chooses the cross. Reading the book really helped me understand it clearly. I crossed a picket line back in the day to see this film, I knew it was powerful scenes to be understood. I had the book back then and everyone tried buy it from me
Following up on Tendrams' insightful comment: Jesus freehand draws a PERFECT circle. It's one of the subtlest ways that the movie confirms that the Jesus character is indeed divine. So many christians dismissed this film as blasphemous when it came out when it is anything but.
Trust in our hearts we will find the truth the bible was written by humans who mistranslated and added what they want to it God lives in your heart and thoughts
Maybe that circle will protect Jesus from a sea-bear . . . Anyways, in all seriousness, this beautiful film is a masterpiece for the ages. I'm an atheist, and this has a much more effective message on love, accepting others, humanity, and overall morals than any chapel or megachurch can give. There's no comparison here. It is wrong to guilt-trip and shame people into converting after seeing the gratuitous gore their sins did to Jesus and what sinners they are. (Gibson's The Passion of the Christ does this with great effect.) In contrast, in Scorsese's film the viewer feels understanding when seeing the thorns go on Christ's head, when he scourged in the nude. Jesus' face itself in the Last Temptation appears to show the viewer understanding and comfort with whatever he or she is going through in life. Christ understands people's anguish because he was once in pain himself, both psychologically and physically.
One of my favourite scenes and a wonderful biblical story ..."Woman, my time has not yet come" = "Gosh Mom....I'm not supposed to be doing this cool stuff yet"!

That is where faith comes in. It's not a subjective thing. You either have it, or you don't. It's really very simple. I'm one of the poor souls that does not have faith. I wish I did. It would provide a lot of comfort for me. Unfortunately my mind is too analytical and leans toward the scientific method. When you apply the scientific method to this story, it falls apart. But it is a beautiful story and it would be nice if it were all true.
They change how they represent it but it is ok the message still there to teach ordinary human while fasting "dont be tempted"... When snake become a tree.. But the axe where did Jesus get those?? He just stepped the head of snake actually..
??? I don't recognize this story from the Bible. I know that Jesus was tempted in the desert after 40 days of fasting by Satan. Could somebody tell me exactly where this part was in the Bible?
It’s not from the Bible. This is from a fictional piece of work that gives us not only a different story about the New Testament with Jesus and this is a supposed to be a realistic depiction of Jesus where he has genuine human emotions like anger, fear, things that we can relate to
***** so we go through life blindly doing things and not KNOWING IF IT IS GOOD OR EVIL. ... NO FREE -WILL IN THAT SCENARIO ..... Rev 17:1-2 ...the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
this film helped me to understand the en-battled disposition of jesus christ, his blatant hypocrisies, inability to rise above his own petty fears, mistakes and contradictions messianic/narcissistic fantasies of world domination and henceforth lead to my evolvement into finding seytan and becoming an atheist and loathing him for life. what i reaaly found amusing when this film first came out in 1988, was, it caused a split within the fundamentalist right-wing community, proving how very covertly hypocritical they really are when the "ugly" truth is revealed, of how perceptively argumentively they cannot get along regardless of their headstrong inability to realize their bibles are written to be understood from a pluralistic standpoint in defined meaning of gnosis. biblical literalism is why white light religions today have brought us to the point boarding on WWIII! this film ove time has only proven why WE athiests are the smartest people in the world, because our metaphysical perception of the world as we really know it to be absolutely irks, irritates and enrages those whom cannot come to terms with the dead-on-fact we have the majority of life in meaning mostly figured out and the matrix is virtually decoded and it is driving crazed god believers insane with jealousy how we have proven most of the world dead wrong concerning the nature of what/whom/where the concept of god is truly rooted! internal while simulataniously external aka pantheonic NOT montheistic.
+chris cox Hehe. The greatest minds in history, from Da Vinci to Einstein to Feynman, were not atheists. They knew better than to proclaim that they had the answers. "I have repeatedly said that in my opinion the idea of a personal God is a childlike one, but I do not share the crusading spirit of the professional atheist whose fervor is mostly due to a painful act of liberation from the fetters of religious indoctrination received in youth. I prefer an attitude of humility corresponding to the weakness of our intellectual understanding of nature and of our own being." -Albert Einstein
I think the thing that really irks, irritates, and enrages other people about your belief system is the fact that it includes the words "We are the smartest people in the world." You're the sort of evangelical atheist who gives the rest of the atheists, agnostics, and doubters in the world a bad name.
Atheism, while procliaiming itself to be a lack of belief in God, is still ultimately just like any Abrahamic religion, because as with every Abrahamic religion, it sets itself apart as the one that 'holds all the answers', or in your case, the 'one' answer: that there is no God and that life is ultimately meaningless. And anyone who doesn't believe that is cast aside in your mind as being an idiot or a child. Much like how non-believers in the days of old were cast aside as heretics or corrupters. I don't even believe in any organised religions... but militant atheists piss me off something fierce.
