I have wanted to make a frozen snow diorama for such a long time, and what better than to combine it with a viking / norse mythology theme? This was a blast to make!

About stone colour:
You can change it according to the setting (obviously) but its specifics are pretty neat. For instance:
A red-brown rock will contain iron and be weathered, so this is mostly optimal for a mainland diorama.
A green rock will be more natural in forests or in a watery setting where vegetation can cling to the surface. These rocks will usually be more rounded.
A faded yellow/green-ish rock is actually more common on alpine places, where there is a lot of lichen life due to retreating glaciers. The longer ago the glacier has left, the larger (and thus more prominent) the colour.
A white-ish rock can be found mainly in a European setting or a Chinese/Japanese setting due to the calcite rock being more prominent there.
Blue-greyish rocks are an AWESOME base for poorer rocks (with less metals in them) and is more common on mountains. They are usually pretty sharp and can get HUGE.
A more bright reddish rock can be found in some deserts or in specific settings that are more common in North- and South-Amerika.
Black/ dark grey are more common in volcanic areas, but are also mostly with cavities or hollows is them. Also take a look at the flow-like texture of obsidian, might be nice to play off of that.
If you're tired of all the "traditional" spike-like mountains, I suggest you search for flatiron mountains. They are a mountain type that is basically the crust being pushed up (like all mountains), BUT they broke off at some point and what you are left with is a flat surface at about 60° and an AWESOME break like a giant took the ground and just broke it with its bare hands.
Another good idea is the Siberian trap-mountains. They were created by a series of volcanic eruptions and are a rounded step-like form. It's pretty prominent in the scene and easy to play off of.
Another cool way for rocks to be created is making a basalt-field. These hexagonal stone pillars are the natural form after lava has been cooling. The hexagonal structure arises due to the crystal structure of silicium dioxide, that is a large part of silicate rocks. These will also be more white-ish.

Funny/cute story: When you first talked about the cutting mat, I told my boyfriend that it's a pitty I already have one, because mine is an unattractive green color and yours is so pretty.
A few weeks later my boyfriend saw your tavern PC video (without me mentioning it) and realized, that the mug I have is actual merch from you.
So guess what: For Christmas I got a little envelope with two "gift cards" for your cutting mat and the sketchbook. He knew it wouldn't arrive in time, so he drew the gift cards to still be able to gift me something.

Amazing as always! It did hurt a little seeing the beautiful landscape get covered in snow (just like in real life) but seeing the hints of green under the snow made it totally worth it :D
The color and shading of the rock was dazzling to my rockhound eyes. Martina, remember those techniques next time yo do a snow-less landscape.

oh my GOD. you have no idea how validating it to hear you say 'painting rocks isn't exactly easy' because jfc i didn't know what i was doing, i just knew that when i was working on a commissioned painting a few months back the single biggest thing that kept holding me back in a complex scene with water, and foliage and trees and animals was the FECKIN ROCKS!!
I once did a painting based on a photograph of the Kimberley at sunset. The colours! Reds and purples and greys and all sorts. Took me ages to get it somewhat decent looking

I decided to paint my wall, making a large landscape and I had so many rocks. Needless to say my brain hurt at the end of it. Rocks are so complex to paint but LOOK SO SIMPLE.
The time lapse drying of the glue at 22:41 was really cool. Looked like real white water slowly calming down over time as the tide receded.
Only 5 minutes into the video but just wanted to quickly say how much I appreciate Martina’s instructions and explanations about her process. I’ve been itching to make a diorama since I started watching y’all last year and the urge has increased tenfold
The diorama looked great throughout the whole process. I can appreciate seeing it grow and even in changing seasons. This project is like a reminder that it's the journey we seek not so much the destination. It is good that you are a youtube creator and make these videos of your projects because capturing the journey transformations is art in itself.

it does look a lot different after you added the snow but it looks SUPER realistic. for your first time doing snow effects like this i think you did an amazing job. the trick with the ice on the river was so clever as well!! hope you had wonderful holidays, ive missed seeing you guys!

The fire, and especially, the ice, look so real! As someone who's spent nearly every one of my 61 winters in Minnesota, I know a bit about ice; almost as much -- maybe -- as someone from Norway :)

9:00 Only a person from a place like Norway, with REAL winter, would think to layer the snow over vegetation. That's the kind of detail that makes a diorama AWESOME!
I actually prefer it with snow, I think it makes the figures pop against the low contrast background. I think the original rock-scape had so much color and texture contrast that the minis would have been swallowed up a bit in it. And I think the water effect came out amazing!

During the end credits, I was thinking it would be WAY cool to have actual snowfall... No idea how to recycle it, but still... :-)
@@nairbvel just like a normal snowglobe, just bigger and heavier.
Put it some liquid of the desired color and viscosity and add as much snow as you want. Make sure everything other than the snow is held in place very securely.
Beautiful, as always, Martina!! Also, Hans, I specialize in Anycubic printers and you're doing a great job! If I can give one piece of advice that will help, take your supports off before you cure and there will be much less damage. Also, that blue plastic should come off of the piece that goes under the turntable. It's reflective and will help your prints cure. 😊 I love every video you guys do. I hope one day my channel will be as big as yours!! 😊❤️

Also, the Ice in the water and the little flame details???? The ice was so realistic, like SO REALISTIC, that I actually forgot it's not real and I was like "but wait, won't it melt in the resin" 😭😭😭 And the little flame with the glue??? It's always the small details that amaze me the most.

I always feel like I need to be totally prepared and record everything in one take. And yes that means I haven't been able to record anything. Thanks for giving me a sign that I don't need to do it all at once. I can record it in different takes at different times. Maybe now I can get the nerve to finally do this. Great to see the both of you doing different things on this one. Love the miniatures you made btw. Looked awesome painted. Oh and I love the terrain. Realistic looking. So many cool effects. I kind of agree with you on liking it before you added the snow. Still looks cool though. Especially like the fire under the pot. Looks hot.

Yay! The year begins!
Hanz, there are several adjustments you can make to help your prints fail less, but most are model-specific so you will want to jump on a forum for your specific printers. For mine the fix was really unintuitive by raising the lift speed on my printer. I thought for sure it would make things worse instead of better, but I went from ~50-60% failures to rarely ever having a failure.
Dialing in my exposure settings (per resin used) also helped a lot. Every resin is a little bit different, and I eventually settled on using 2 parts of a white somewhat flexible (Siyra tech ABS-like Fast White) resin with 1 part elegoo grey (because I bought a bunch when I started... not good for minis as it is too brittle, so I won't be buying more). I'm going to try adding some Tenacious to the mix this year and see if it helps make them more bendy and less liable to break when playing table-top with the kiddos... it is stupidly expensive, but my understanding is that adding just a little can help a lot, so worth trying.

I use the Elegoo standard grey (and beige) all the time for mini's. What I do for curing, though, is I cure whe models submerged in a glass container filled with regular water. For normal 28-32mm figures, I generally go with a 30 second cure (60-120 seconds for larger models) and though they are mostly still delicate, they are quite a bit more durable. Usually, if a model is too brittle, chances are pretty high they have been (way) over-cured. Curing in water is good for this, as exposure to oxygen actually hinders the curing process and dunking models in water fixes that, easily and effectively.
Another great build. Being Irish, Im absolutely positive that I have Viking blood in me (most of us do). I love everything about Vikings. My main thing about this project is the size of the Wolf. Its the size of a small horse.

But that’s just the way it goes you know what’s under there and all your hard work is still there. I really appreciate that did a little recap in the end and talked about what you learned from it as a maker/artist as well as what you may have done differently despite how nice it still turned out. Some artists here on RUclips hide this part of creating things. As a person who sadly doesn’t own a 3D-printer, I also really appreciated that Hansi explained the processes shown in the montage, just like you, Martina, explained some foam-related steps you showed us.

A suggestion! In your future projects involving electricity. Solder all electricity in parallel to a 2,1mm DC-contact. Then rather than a Switch, you can solder a battery pack to a male 2,1mm DC-contact. That way, you can physically remove the power source. And in the future, if you wish. You can use an old AC/DC transformer with similar contacts to power it from a wall socket. (With the right voltage)
Just think it will be less invasive and less amount of battery packs used left and right. Not to mention, one battery pack holder can be reused for different projects or switched around.

3D printing suggestion: based on how your model failed around 4:57, I would suggest coating the FEP sheet with PTFE Dry Lubricant to reduce the peel force. You may also be over-exposing the resin, which will cause excessive FEP bonding -- this is usually exacerbated with large cross sections. Perform a detailed calibration print to fine-tune your exposure settings. Hope this helps!

As always a well made video with great content. Love watching the stuff you create, it's very inspiring. A small hint for the 3D printing part, it's often easier removing the supports from the print before curing the models. When the prints have just left the machine and you have cleaned them they won't be as brittle as after the curing process so they are much easier to remove without damaging the model. Here's some random observations: a) "some disproportionally epic music" - Martina, I just love your sense of humor! b) Also, the way you learned to paint the objects is incredible, excellent job with the boat, it just looked like a real wood, c) on the other hand, the trees look kinda all the same, but I get you didn't want to kill yourself creating and painting unique snowy trees, d) the diorama just RADIATES Skellige atmosphere, so bye, I'm off to another compulsive round of Witcher 3, see you in few weeks!

You should continue with this and do the seasons! Connect them end to end or in a circle... and in the center a lareger crysyal or something else. Keep the same theme, maybe add a village or a hunting party. Oh so many ideas! Love it!!!!!!
I felt a chill of cold with the lighting and the snow in the final results. Looks like an awesome epic story. Doing something new and succeeding fuels the imagination to accomplish more. Can't wait to see what is in store for 2022.

Most people make swords or helmets out of foam, not Martina, she makes landscapes and it looks good. This inspires me, to come up with a necklace, made to look like ice. I love how much work, she puts into her peices. Also hansi, is a real wizard with what he does, the man needs his own wand.

this looks so cool!!! judging from precious pieces i think you like color and texture, the unfortunate nature of snow is to cover most of that up like a fluffy blanket. maybe you could combine those two things by making a "last snows in spring" piece. where you see grass and some flowers peaking through with the last remnants of the melting snow. it would be a nice mix of snowy edges and some pops of color
