The most annoying thing about people who dislike musicals is that they won't even give themselves a chance to enjoy it. If you sit and marinate for 15 minutes expanding on how much you hate musicals and critiquing the singer's voices rather than actually paying attention to the words, of course you're going to dislike it.
How can you tell when someone hates musicals? Don't worry, they'll tell you
Waiting for this!!! Everyone hated doing this. Even the singers. James thought it was gonna have the worst reception. (Head probably liked it because he's done musicals.) But, after it was off and running it became hugely popular.
I know you may not want to hear this, (and someone else mentioned) but you may want to go back and pay closer attention to the lyrics, because they actually further the plot.
Buffy's musical stands head and shoulders above other musical episodes in shows, others do it just for fun, Buffy advanced the plot drastically with theirs.
@@mattnar3865 I feel Xena creators put a lot of work into their musical episode which came before Buffy. Tapert and Raimi were pretty hardcore about creating it. The dvd commentary is pretty much everyone looking shell shocked when asked and costumer crying! It was really epic with the costumes mimicking a tarot deck. It did forward the plot, BUT the songs were no where near as polished or stand out as with Buffy.
The Demon, Sweet was played by three-time Tony Award winning actor, singer, & dancer Hinton Battle. He passed earlier this year at the end of January.
Sad to hear, he was great.
This is the gold standard of TV musical episodes! There's a legitimate story reason for the music to happen, and it moves the plot forward significantly. Every song was specifically written for the actors and their characters (Joss Whedon taught himself to write music just to be able to do it).
I also don't think it was actually Xander who summoned the demon. He would have shown some guilt or recognition of what was happening a lot earlier if he really did it, and it is in his character to take the blame to protect Dawn.
It wasn't her either, since she found the necklace in the shop after the music started, but it's a public shop. Anyone in the town could have left it there. It was probably originally meant to be another plot by the Trio, but their part was cut for time.
5:55 Xander is doing quite well, saw that same table in a brochulogue from the '90s New York Times and it was $2,500.
10:31 part of the 80's training montage Buffy mentioned.
I seem to remember a really long time ago you saying something about there being a musical ep and you not liking musicals...and me giving the advice to pay attention more to the lyrics than the songs themselves. Unlike most shows that have a musical episode, this one actually drives the plot forward. A lot. So very, very, very much is setup in this ep via the song lyrics. But yea, I agree, even if you don't particular enjoy this type of ep... it's worth going through for the reveal.
As for the lipsyncing.... how do you think that musical eps are filmed? lmao. They always record songs in studio and lip sync on the set to the tracks. :) You can't get good quality vocal quality while singing and moving around a lot. You'd be hearing all kinds of heavy breathing and unstable vocals. Even pro-singers sing with a backup track a lot of the time so it covers up all the imperfections.
All of the singing was done by the actors themselves. Alyson Hannigan apparently specifically requested to sing as little as possible, hence the lack of lines.
Yes, they’re lip syncing to their own voices lol
Bewitched? Well, in that show's opening credits theme sequence, it was animated. There's a animated Buffy, a pilot treatment for a Buffy The Animated Series.
In movie musicals, the songs are often pre-recorded and the actors do, indeed, lip synch. But everyone here is singing in their own voices. No one is singing for them. James Marsters was in a band and does sing professionally, and so, no, he is not lip synching in the way that you mean.
Here's an example of this sort of technique, with Judy Garland: ruclips.net/video/m344gvzFLiI/видео.html.
Garland was one of the outstanding musical stars of the Hollywood era, and today as well. The singing voice is definitely hers. She is lip synching to herself (expertly, I would say) as different takes are being shot. The same sort of thing, less professionally, is being done here in this episode. Also, I would ask, if the producers were going to use other voices to lip synch, why on earth would they not have used more professional voices for everyone (like Dawn). It would be silly to decide to lip synch from other singers and still keep non-trained voices to do so.
8:50 In a perfect expansion, the Angel crew would've been involved too. Picture Angel doing "Mandy"🤣
I always figured the magic didnt affect willow cuz at this point she was pretty powerful.
But in reality i think Allison really didnt wanna sing.
I thought there was a deeper meaning to her not singing 😆
13:26 Nah, Allyson was just so nervous that she asked Joss to not give her much, he obliged, but she has said she regretted not having done more.
Josh Whedon considered using a professional singer for Buffy's part. Sarah Michelle Geller convinced him not to, since this episode was so important for that character. I'm glad all the actors did their own singing: it would have seemed weird to have any of them dubbed. I thought it was a great episode. There were substantial plot line advancements for nearly every character. The episode wasn't just a gimmick, it actually mattered. ("All those secrets you've been concealing.....")
This is somewhat true. It was Sarah who was going to let herself be dubbed, until she realized how crucial the songs were. Then she got vocal training to get the job done.
This episode was lost on you. It's amazing musical with important story content. You should go back and watch it.
I bring up the story content in my post discussion but not many people watch those according to analytics. That goes for all channels though 🙂
@@BigTimeKnightsnot sure if you will see this but I consider this musical episode of Buffy the best episode of any TV show ever. It’s been performed 1000s of times in real life which can be seen on RUclips if you look. Musical episodes of TV shows go back to at least 1951 with the episode of I Love Lucy called The Operetta, but this episode was so well done and so well received that it is the episode that inspired modern shows to do musical episodes, for better or worse.
1) did you catch in Tara’s song after she discovers what Willow did to her that she uses the words “disgust” and “I must do what I must”, singing “wish I could stay” all signs that she is going to break up with Willow? Joss made every lyric count.
2) the ‘got the mustard out’ guy is David Fury, one of the main writers of Buffy and Angel. He also directed a 30 minute behind the scenes vid that is on RUclips. You can react to it now, and would be the first reactor to do so!
3) the parking ticket lady is Jose Whedon’s co-producer on the show!
@@BigTimeKnightsgood to know. 😊
It's Buffy. Joss Whedon got criticized for only writing snappy dialogue, and responded with "Hush" in Season 4. An episode with mostly no dialogue. And for what it's worth, I don't know if he got criticized for lack of musical talent, but he came up with an episode that actually moved the season and character arcs forward, using music. I liked this episode a lot when it aired, and it has aged well. (Unlike me, who just gets "ugly and older" as Elton told us 5 decades ago!)
No one WANTED to reveal anything they revealed
It's not a live show, of course they are lipsyncing lol...but the recordings are their voices.
Poor Alyson. Singing is not her strong suit.
I absolutely hate musicals, as well. This one, however, actually began to grow on me each time my gf decided to re-watch it.
4:19 Dawn klepto, analysed on The Tragedy Of Dawn Summers on another channel. Explains A LOT of her character.
I think you went in deciding you wouldn't like it, and you found A LOT of negative, but you kind of glossed over that this episode is a plot explosion. SO MUCH HAPPENED. You might of missed some more of the subtle things.
Always game to watch a reaction to this episode.
This was such a good and fun episode!
4:29 Willow has dressed, wild. See Dopplegangland. SCORCHING. Hadda, and even now , give myself a mental liquid hydrogen shower to cool off. Do Not Break Commandment . Repeat"Allyson is married","Allyson is married","Allyson is........"
7:58 Not really attacking, else that chip would give him a mega migraine. Better is why there was a graveside funeral interrment at night.
A half sized Broadway worthy show. Could well have expanded to a full length one, if the network have been willing.
It's OK if you don't like musical shows and Broadway-type stuff. To me, there's always something strange about a Broadway-type musical show that's a bit off from just listening to a band do a song. It's actually pretty awesome they worked in a believable and super-dressed up singing monster who made them sing and dance. Marti Noxon and David Fury are briefly shown singing and dancing. It could be bunnies!
Lulz, yes, they are all lip syncing their own voice. They can't record their voices as they film 😂 Everything is prerecorded in a studio with their own voices.
Not familiar with musicals or musical performances in general 😆.
@@BigTimeKnights Live and learn.
@@BigTimeKnights Well, it's how all music videos are mad. Prerecord and lip sync in front of the camera.
4:41 Exactly!Another channeler reactor says Lesbian Disney Princess!
Love Buffy 😍😍😍
The actress who played Willow begged Joss Wheedon to not make her sing, she didn't want to do it at all lol so he gave her one line.
I've got a theory: some kid is dreaming
And we're all stuck in his wacky Broadway nightmare
...
I think these line's mostly filler
No, not one.
Helps that it's consistent with Willow's character; she'd been established as having a fear of singing and stage performance since the very first season.
@@Kinitawowi Yes, from the Nightmares episode, where she was supposed to sing opera but couldn't.
6:07 Some cheeses look terrible, and smell worse; can you say Limbaugh?
Oops, meant Limburger, but he reeks too!
Love this episode ^^ Giles, Spike and Tara is real musicians, the rest of the cast are kinda autotuned.
People that don't like musicals must hate Disney. All their animated movies are technically considered musicals.
Most Live-Action musicals. I love the old 2D animation Disney movies. Aladdin, Lion King, Emperor's New Groove, Sorcerer's Stone, etc. I also love some of the older live-action musicals like The Wizard of Oz and The Wiz but those are more nostalgic and maybe the goats in that category.
LOL wanted to see your reaction. The very first time I watched it, I HATED it, but every time I see it, it gets less and less annoying.
Everyone in every movie, tv show, and music video is lip syncing their own voice in songs.
Well, there are a few exceptions, but they really don't sound good. Les Miserables and the live-action Beauty and the Beast are two that I can think of.
Yeah people obsess over this episode. I appreciate at it for what it is and the risks they took with it. But otherwise, it’s not one of my favorites. I really just find myself cringing through a lot of it.
