This video made me realize why I always feel anxious in certain places where there isn't a background noise such as a fan or an air conditioner running to drown it out (which is why my AC's fan runs year-round) but I don't get that same anxiety in certain places such as old buildings, out in a forest, or some other places. I have extremely sensitive hearing and I must be hearing the humming sound of electricity. In places where there's a lot of appliances set up, or very large appliances, but not enough other sound going on at the right kind of tone to drown it out, my "silence anxiety" gets far worse.

I knew what the hum was as soon as you mentioned that it was different between the US and other countries. This is also the reason why analogue screens have different refresh rates in the US than other countries, because the TV casts each frame with the same frequency as the electricity. Since analogue TVs interlace (alternate between even and odd lines of a frame in order to increase refresh rate), the refresh rate of the TV is half of the frequency of the electricity going in.

I remember crossing train tracks and hearing a hum when no sound from my headphones were playing. I theorized that it's because the mic that does the active noise canceling was picking up mains hum (i didn't know what it was called back then) and playing its reverse as to cancel its sound. I'm guessing then it is what i though, although I'm not sure. Either way, fascinating video about a topic I didn't know i could find fascinating. Good job!

There's something oddly sweet about a machine "humming" while its powered on. It's like people singing to themselves as they work, or whistling a tune. The knowledge that a microwave will hum while its powered on and a person could be whistling while they cook something in the same room makes it feel like electronics and humans aren't so different after all.

Just realized that this hum is why I loved my old childhood ceiling fan, so I guess this means I can move out now.

Scruffy: mainly analyzes art from media.
Scruffy: sees a video from Vsauce.
    Scruffy: "Ah, yes. Microwaves."

The "What I Love" theme integrates flawlessly in every one of your videos, but this one in particular gives me chills.

I often find myself singing on the key my microwave hums when I'm heating something with it, so this video hits close to home

I found this right as I was taking a hot pocket out of the freezer to put it into the microwave. Thanks for telling me how my microwave makes noise while it prepares my hot pocket

Whats really wild is because the minute change in mains frequency is logged, a video taken that contains mains hum can sometimes be time stamped exactly when the recording took place.

Man, the visuals and sounds are so beautiful in this video. I wonder how much time this took.

I didn't have my glasses on and read the title as "why do microwaves hunt?" Whole different video right there.
