@Max Kathirgamanathan if it’s slow and edgy ( or possibly sad/creepy) it’s Vader or particularly something about Anakins fall, suffering, or darkness. Otherwise it’s the marching theme of the Empire and just means the Empire in general (especially if the music is in-universe coming from the environment rather than from the movie).
Vader represents the strength of the Empire, so it makes sense that the Imperial March is played when he's on screen, but it's also played when he *isn't* on screen
I’m trying to remember what Music Vader had in the first Movie since imperial March didn’t appear until ESB. If I recall Vader is a strange case in usually being scored in association with something else. Either being associated with the empire in the form of the imperial March. Or appearing at times when themes associated with the Death Star and Tarkin are also on screen. In a lot of ways Vader’s theme reflects what he is. He is a tool Of the empire he is the empire he lacks a certain self agency. And that’s reflected in his musical identity being borrowed identities of other imperial threats. Vader is less his own self and more is the might of the empire personified

I've watched this video, and the Breath of the Wild "Invisible Design" video, at least two or three times each now. There's just something about your visual and aural style that is so appealing. It's the quirky, minimalistic yet extremely expressive animations. The constant musical accompaniment - when you discussed the ruler analogy, you were actually playing a rhythm on a ruler. The thoroughly accessible analysis - never does it feel like you're beating us over the head with music theory. And other things I can't put my finger on. That's not what a leitmotif is though, that's a THEME. It's not played throughout any other levels BUT those ones, and that theme isn't used anywhere else, nor in any other games. Therefore it's a theme. Super Mario Bros 3's Athletic theme IS one though since it's been used very frequently in more recent Mario games to represent, well, more platform-y and athletic stages.
When I hear the main theme of New Super Mario Bros., I think specifically of that game and the sequels it spun off in its sub-series. So it has a place, just not for the Mario series as a whole.
Can confirm, been playing Paper Mario this week. The battle theme has been stuck in my head the whole time, and it's driving the voices in my head _crazy._
I love how when he’s comparing musical measurements to marks on a ruler the Mario theme in the background is played on a rubber band, cause there both school supplies. Such a fun detail.
It's not actually a rubber band, he's just straight-up using a ruler. You can produce those tones by vibrating a ruler on the edge of a table. It's incredible.
Leitmotif is one of my all time favorite musical concepts, and I'd love to make a video on how it exists and is so influential. In addition to what's discussed here, other franchises and media use it to their advantage such as Marvel and DC super heroes, Thomas the Tank Engine, the Looney Tunes, Beastars, and even to an extent even things like amusement parks use music to convey the different places and things they have to show. Any rollercoaster fan that hears Technonaut or Ready to Go will immediately be able to tell where it's from, and it's not just because they're obnoxiously funky tunes. They immerse you in the experience and I love it
BlueStarsFall That’s because band focused on you understanding how to play and how to become better at your instrument. If you wanted to know all of this you should have taken a music theory class, which is basically music explained with logic and philosophical ways.
Dude! The production values on this are awesome - the way there's always a musical demonstration of what you're talking about on a ukulele or a sax or what have you, the way the animations really drive home the points you're making, just the general 'flow' of this video is really consistent and impressive. The points you're making are also really informative - you go into really good detail on all the music theory you use, it all really makes sense. Subscribe button pressed, like button obliterated.
Syncopation is why knowing drums is important. I hear a lot of people playing drums or saying that they are easy but the hard thing about drums is giving a song a *GROOVE*. That isn't something written on a sheet, it's something that a composer with knowledge in music is able to use to give life to a song...
I would say some of these are leitmotifs, in that they get linked to concepts and reused to refer to them, but other parts go beyond that and are straight up reification. The Mario theme *is* Mario, it is impossible to divorce it from Mario. leitmotifs can often be subverted, and are usually only used to a limited extent to still keep them musically fresh and interesting and to allow for them to be subtly changed. However the Mario theme is set in stone, you can't subvert or change it (melodically at least, lots of people reharmonise it and play it in different styles), and its used in large sections as a stand in for Mario, rather than to *hint* at Mario. So I'd say its gone beyond a simply leitmotif and now *is* Mario.
7:47 I could actually listen to this ukulele mix of the Mario 3D world theme for hours on end. It's like a Yoshi's Crafted/Wooly world cover lol I love it
Videos like these gets more interesting when you’re actually learning music theory and sort of goofing around with your instrument, most notably the piano which easily visualize music, rather than from a non-music learner pespective.

They immerse you in the experience and I love it
If someone asked my to whistle a Mario tune I would say, “I can’t whistle”

Why am I here? I don't know anything about musical theory. Most of this is going right over my head.
And yet... I want more.
How about "Harmonic Rhythm in Sonic the Hedgehog's Music

Is it bad that I learned more about music than when I was in the band for school.
Yes actually
The only thing I got taught at school was flute and can’t even remember sheet
Yeah... me is in band and me never learned this.
BlueStarsFall That’s because band focused on you understanding how to play and how to become better at your instrument. If you wanted to know all of this you should have taken a music theory class, which is basically music explained with logic and philosophical ways.
No, band doesn’t do a good job at teaching you
My thoughts exactly! Every little detail really adds up to make this an amazing package.

Syncopation is why knowing drums is important. I hear a lot of people playing drums or saying that they are easy but the hard thing about drums is giving a song a *GROOVE*. That isn't something written on a sheet, it's something that a composer with knowledge in music is able to use to give life to a song...
For anyone who doesn't study theory, this is a GREAT introduction. I will be recommending this to ALL of my students. Well done Scruffy!
when that mario drawing turned out to be a 3D model I was very surprised and delighted

“Leitmotif”

Videos like these gets more interesting when you’re actually learning music theory and sort of goofing around with your instrument, most notably the piano which easily visualize music, rather than from a non-music learner pespective.
the amount of people who play this and how much of a classic the games are also helps make these songs much more catchy
me, not remembering a single thing from my music lessons in school and therefore not knowing a single thing about music theory: Heck Yeah Music Theory!
The title wasn’t lying. I literally got these songs stuck in my head from the short parts of them that were played in this video
Me, who doesn't know much about music: hmm, fascinating
This is honestly one of the best video's I have watched. To explain a relatively difficult concept so clear with perfect and funny animations and music. Amazing!
I just found this video through someone linking it, and I gotta say I really love it! You have such a great way of explaining things and I learned a ton. You only have 900 views though?? That's insane. You deserve millions! I'll definitely be sharing this with people! c:
