"There is one sin which I have come to fear above all others: certainty. If there was only certainty, and no doubt, there would be no mystery. And therefore, no need for faith."
Love this quote. I lived in Rome from 2003 - 2006 during the transition from John Paul II to Benedict. That was an extraordinary year that would also make a great movie. I was in Rome in the last days of JPII, his demise, wake and funeral. I was also in St. Peter's Square when the newly elected Benedict appeared in the loggia & his first Mass as Pope. In all events, there was festivity, enthusiasm, color and lots of cheer. I don't understand why there's a striking difference in the way movies, books, and TV shows about the Vatican are presented from the reality I lived. As an artist, I'm so much for creative license. However, movies like these make me feel shortchanged. Life is rosier than we think. Cheers!
@@corinneromabiles2410 That would have been a remarkable time to be there. Of course, any time in Rome would be wonderful. I've never been, but a friend of mine was there earlier this year and decided he just had to go back again and booked his flight. Your experience and persepective sounds amazing. You're right, they always make the Vatican seem so dark and gravely serious. Pope John Paul ll was here in Toronto back in the 1980s and said Mass at a huge open air gathering. My dad was there as a volunteer; he was so glad to be there.
@@corinneromabiles2410 I agree, for one thing Santa Marta is much brighter and yet the rooms modest.
Faith ultimately is based on truth, on certainty that things happened and are real. Did Jesus exist and walk this planet? Did Jesus perform the miracles we read about in the New Testament? Was Jesus put to death on a cross and rose from the dead three days after his death? These things are certain and it’s why the early church started and grew like wildfire from nothing in the heart of the cruel oppressive Roman Empire, which is like China or Russia today but even more so. How did the church happen, coming out of nowhere and then years later the whole Roman Empire becomes officially Christian?
Of course there is always mystery. Miracles are a mystery, life is a great mystery. Mystery is great and part of living. We see through a glass darkly. But we also have certainly, which we read each Sunday in the Apostle’s Creed. Certainly is not a sin. Christianity stands and falls on the certainty of the resurrection! Otherwise it’s complete nonsense and a waste of time.
Is that a Pope John Paul II quote originally?
Ralph Fiennes is the greatest actor without an Oscar. Hope he actually wins this time.

The play on words with "Faith", "certainty" and "mystery" is typical of the skeptic mentality that characterises modern secularism. Faith isn't based on doubt, but precisely on a supernatural certainty about the mysteries revealed by God concerning our Salvation.
Exactly. Doubt as a psychological phenomenon is well worth exploring, but such a ponderous line as that to which you refer simply indicates that the issue has not been understood. Yes, there is a drama in walking by faith and not by sight, and yes there is always the existential possibility of doubt, but where is the emphasis on the substance of things hoped for? It's a rather banal subject, in my mind. Overdone.

It's not "a play" with words. It's not about being modern secularism, but being logical in something that - for a lot of people, including you, I believe - doesn't need logic.
It last to do with you and your definition of Faith, but more about faith in general, whetever the object you are putting your faith in
@@Matheussilveira254 And here comes the modern secularism. No, faith is certainly concerned with logic, but the "struggle to believe" is really not as central as modernity would have it, and it's really not the most interesting thing about religion.

A subtle detail that the producers might have gotten wrong.
