    Each weapon has it's own amount of stagger that it deal on an attack. The Atgiers secondary and hammers get a bonus multiplier to their stagger. An enemy has a certain threshold of their maximum health at which if the total 'stagger' value reaches, they get staggered. The Atgeirs are so great at staggering because of this multiplier they have on the secondary attack, which is a 6x bonus.

    Atgeir is the term from the sagas for what was also called a 'warspear', which was basically a spear with such a huge head that we'd call it a pole-axe. (The difference between a pole-axe and halberd, btw, is that the halberd has a spearhead at the end of the haft, allowing you to make thrusting attacks with the butt of it to impale.)

    • @NordicEagleVids
      @NordicEagleVids 3 года назад +1

      I think a halberd would be a more comparable weapon in terms of usage since they tend to have alot of strike and thrust focus (though the atgeir/warspear/hewing spear lack the spike on the opposit end of the axehead that halberds have)
      poleaxes are different weapons altogeather, both in construction and usage

    The stagger works this way: every mob has a stagger limit, which represents an amount of damage they can take. If they take more, they are staggered. The atgeir staggers very easily because the middle mouse attack stagger damage is multiplied by 6 (for some reason).
    Quick edit note: you need to have a very good stamina management if you're gonna use this weapon as primary weapon before lategame. Otherwise, having shield+sword or shield+mace is gonna be way safer.

      The bronze atgeir uses a lot less stamina than the blackmetal one, same as with all weapons. I use it against trolls a lot, and also wolves, but after staggering them, I don't immediately empty my stamina spamming normal attacks. Instead I regain stamina while the enemies are staggered, then just stagger them again immediately after the previous stagger ends. Rinse and repeat. One tier-appropriate stamina food (+2 health foods) and a rested bonus is plenty for that.

  • @johnlin3959
    @johnlin3959 3 года назад +2

    Here's a point that I haven't heard any other content creator make: Multi-hit damage penalties.
    Normally (say with a sword or an axe) when you hit multiple targets, it does less damage per target. Usually in the ballpark of 60% of your normal damage.
    This is also true of the Atgeir's primary thrust attack, if you hit multiple targets, you will do less damage per target.
    However, the secondary attack of the Atgeir is an "AoE" attack (like a troll's attack, or the sledge's primary) and does not suffer from damage drop off from hitting multiple targets.
    You can test this out for yourself easily enough by creating some wooden walls or palisades to hit. Or you can also watch the part of the video where FireSpark fights multiple Fulings. For consistency, I pick this example where he hits the fuling that is using Torch+Shield.
    5:28 hits 3 fulings. Torch+Shield fuling takes 55.4
    5:46 hits 3 fulings. Torch+Shield fuling takes 37.9 (this is the lowest one, likely a low roll on the RNG)
    6:00 hits the Torch+Shield fuling by itself and it does 54.7 damage
    6:06 hits 3 fulings. Torch+Shield fuling takes 45.1
    6:09 hits the Torch+Shield fuling by itself and it does 51.3 damage
    Obviously, there's some RNG going on here and you can test this yourself against your own dummy targets.

    I like the Atgeir, but I think that the shield and sword are better after using the extensively. Parry is so strong in the game and it's the safest way to not take damage. In any 1v1 the sword and shield will be safer and chew through the mob with less stamina used faster. In combats where you have large groups of enemies the Atgeir secondary attack seems nice, but you have to get them to group perfectly and a lot of times you eat an attack while doing it. My technique with the sword and shield is to either wait for a parry and counter attack or start swinging a bit early so that my third hit lands on the enemy(ies) which will result in a stagger leaving them free to finish off with another combo if not a single swipe. The Atgeir is definitely viable, but I think there's not much to be gained by switching to it from sword and board. The animation also makes it awkward to fight on uneven ground. At the same Atgeir and Mace were my go tos for the swamps. The mace does bonus damage against skeles and blobs sure, but the Atgeir makes it easy to attack blobs and leeches without getting close enough to be poisoned provided that you move back a bit after each strike in the former case and use the spin attack to knockback 4-5 leeches at a time, safely killing them all with a second one.

      Especially the bronze axe might be the only bronze weapon you actually need (an upgraded wood club is fine against blobs, and can even be used for Bonemass, although an iron mace certainly makes that fight and stone golems easier)... If it wasn't for the bronze atgeir being so good as well. But the axe is definitely the first priority, for fine wood and core wood, and it's also a perfectly good weapon for the swamp.
      For blackmetal too, IMO axe first, then atgeir, then whatever else you need.

    Regarding how stagger works: every attack does X physical damage and X stagger damage. Every time you manage to inflict a total of 1,000 stagger points on a target, he will stagger. I'm not sure exactly what the ratio of damage done to stagger damage is, however it is a relatively static multiplier (I believe x10 to physical damage done). Additionally stagger overflow is such a thing, so if you do 350 stagger damage to a target, and he has 900 stagger already, he now has a total of 1,250 - triggering a stagger, and meaning that on your follow-up, he starts at 250 points already banked. This means that getting an initial stagger can be quite difficult, depending on enemies. However, if you can maintain the pressure, further staggers will be easier because of the remainder tat overflows.
    I'm not sure if stagger damage decays/restores like stamina does...but I'm pretty sure that is the case, to try and incentivize a more aggressive playstyle - similarly to how there's always that +1 hp/sec passive regen on most of the boss creatures.

    your tests might be ok in theory, but in practice they are quite flawed. For example, when you attacked the troll, you did it with a bronze atgeir ... but with the stamina of the end game. Try to do the same with cooked meat, neck tail and (if you are lucky) carrot soup (and without god mode, and in the middle of a forest with trees, stones, etc)... you will not have the stamina to do it. All the "high stamina" food you mention (fish wraps, lox, bread...) are Plains food.

I used to use Atgeir exclusively, but I find the jump attack with the knife to 1 shot most enemies in the game, so its quicker and easier in a lot of situations, plus you can have it out all the time without slowing you down.

      You can parry just fine with atgeirs/polearms. I've been parrying seekers with the black metal one (with padded armor and mix of plains/mistlands food). In the plains I also used it to kill lox since they're not resistant to pierce, it parry-staggers them, and the reach helps too. Fulings are even easier and the secondary helps if a group of them is starting to surround you.

      @@aregesafechier also FYI in general that parrying even with shields doesn't automatically negate all damage in Valheim, it just basically gives you extra armor, namely the weapon/shield's block armor multiplied by its parry multiplier, which then reduces the damage. Then if you successfully parry with either a weapon or shield (have enough stamina for the parry, don't die from any damage that gets through, and don't get staggered), the enemy is automatically staggered from the parry (they can get staggered from damage received too, and especially mace/polearm secondaries deal extra stagger damage).
      If you time the parry wrong or just hold block in advance, you only get the block armor without the parry multiplier. That's usually only worth it with tower shields.

    All of these "Frostner is better" comments miss the plot; the atgeir is better when you need PIERCE damage (Stone Golem, Lox) and/or are in a wide-open area fighting large numbers (fulings/wolves). The idea is, I think, to become proficient with ALL of the weapons in the right environments. I just started with the atgeir when Moder murdered me because I couldn't reach her with my silver sword. Got me thinking about reach... Go fight a Stone Golem with an atgeir - suddenly it all adds up.

Which makes it easy to complete the atgeir-combo. 1on1 is mostly just a tripple-mouse-click, and your enemy is dead. If not, dodge back, wait a few seconds until the stagger-cooldown is off and add a second tripple-combo.

    from my testing some of the stuff you stated is incorrect. you CAN in fact stun fuling berserkers. i had very inconsistent results while using a lvl 1 black metal atgeir (~lvl50 polearms). once i upgraded to lvl 4 tho the stuns were much more consistent. its a different story on lvl 2 or 3 berserker tho, no chance on those. leds me to believe that you have to do a certain percentage of dmg to their health so that they can get knocked and that stuff like lox, high lvl berserker and stone golems have to much hp for you to reach that percentage.
    also you get the 2x dmg bonus every time that sth gets knocked back.
    there seems to be no limit on enemies that can be hit with the same attack (watched some old videos and i was hitting 15+ fulings at the same time, knocking all of them)

    That being said, I found the best way to use it is to not spam the spin, but to dodge roll through attacks (I-frames help massively) and fight defensively. If things are not ranged then they have to come to you making the range of the weapon shine.
    Spin is amazing when surrounded but I feel this weapon is even better when you use the range and make use of spacing.

    ive done a playthrough with nothing but great axes and atgeir as long as u have those to weapons numbers and large foes doesnt matter i rarely died to anything other then fall damage when building, and the only disadvantage to atgeir is hills it is very hard to use on the mountains. Twohanders are the best weapons for mob control in the plains, blackforest, and swamp. twohanders are also the second best large mob killing weapons in the game other then daggers and sneak. If twohanders arent youre thing thats fine but if you run only one hand weapons be sure to have both a tower shield and a round shield tower porcupine for the mountains and frostner for everywhere other then mountains. every weapon has its advantages and disadvantages. although nothing beats iron sledge. I have 243 hours in valheim this guy posting the video may have more . every weapon type is viable, even fists if you are meming. frostner is not the best weapon in the game it is balanced every weapon type, but (iron sledge) are very balanced but are proficient at different things. Only use twohanders if u can parry however and run only bonemass buff. I never ran stamina meads and did just fine although in solo I would highly recommend them as i was making my playthrough as hard as possible with my preferred weapons.
