  • Have you ever noticed that old brick house right next to the Shot Tower? Built in the 1790s, it was the home of Baltimore’s second mayor, Thorowgood Smith. And since the 1970s, the Women’s Civic League has been a fabulous steward of this historic house. Join us for today’s Five Minute Histories to learn about early Baltimore history and the important work of the Women’s Civic League since its founding in 1911. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for another video soon!
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Every week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and RUclips channel.

A couple of questions: (1) Were the original water pipes in Baltimore made out of wood? (2) Who runs the Baltimore Flower Mart now and why did the Women’s Civic League stop managing it?

would be nice to add an aside that the house has been open for visits but no longer. Maybe someone would be interested in changing that.
