Can anyone HELP!! I cut all my hair off. After I had my beautiful baby I had some hair loss. So I buzzed it all. Iv been washing my hair with my face wash. Wall iv been doing my skin care on my head for 1.5y now. My patchy spots are gone. I’m ready to start growing it out. I want to do it right and I don’t know where to start. What do I use. I’m nominally just a cheapest shampoo will do girly.
These are great tips for most people, but some people like me truly do just have oily hair. I wash it 2 or 3 times a week, avoid sulfates and silicones, and put zero product in my hair. It’s still super oily 12 hours after a wash. If this is you too, don’t feel bad ❤
I can make my wash day last for 4 to 5 days without oily roots by spraying a dry shampoo every night before putting my hair in a sleep cap. It soaks up the oil before the oil has a chance to become visible. Even my short fringe makes it without me needing to re-wash. I do recommend finding a dry shampoo which doesn't give any tinted residue. I use L'Oreal Air Volume Dry Shampoo. It has no visible residue & using it before my roots get oily works brilliantly for me.
I recommend using shampoos with sulfates bc it actually cleanses your scalp. Bit of course only like once a week cause it can be drying if used too often but once a week or even every other week will probably help. Also there’s the inkey list salicylic acid scalp treatment that could help!
@@jih-pu4xe I recently found out that studies show that dry shampoo shouldn't be used more than twice a week, and never use it more than 2 days in a row, otherwise it can cause hair loss... I just stopped using dry shampoo because my hair is falling out...

Funnily enough, I just watched a Dr. Dray video where she says “over washing hair makes it more oily” is actually a myth. Some people just naturally have oilier hair.
Finally got to a good place with not overwashing, my best trick is to use conditioner around day 2-3 instead of shampoo, but kind of giving it a gentle scrub. Comes out really soft and fresh and good for another day. It's hard to break the cycle but so worth it. PS that top and cami looks super pretty on you

As someone with seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp, I struggle with flaky but oily scalp with my short, masculine style. I found not washing everyday made me soooo itchy on the second day. Zinc shampoo for me everyday + antifungal every other week for me to maintain my hair/scalp🤷♂️
Zinc shampoo!? That sounds interesting. How long have you been using it and did you notice it's helping you, please? I suspect something like that is happening to my scalp as well, but I have not been to a dermatologist, so don't know for sure. Thank you for sharing that, I'll now look up the zinc shampoo.
Thank you for justifying the “double wash!” As a gray haired curly girl, I usually wash every 5-7 days, and have to double up to get product out! I have been told by well-meaning, friends and hairdressers that I should only need to wash once. It’s just nice to get the facts from one who knows soooo much about hair / skin care! Wow, I have been told flipping my head upside down and blow drying without a nozzle was terrible from so many of my friends... but it is the best way for me to get volume. Finally I feel good about blow drying my super fine and thin hair "wrong". Loved this video.
Every single one of my stylists I've had asked me to flip my hair over while they dry it because it's so fine. Be aware, if you have heavy wet hair on top of that freshly blown under hair, it will flatten right back out. I usually do it twords the end of the drying process. Just be sure you don't fry a single spot by holding it there too long.
Yeah I’m not washing my hair once, or twice a week because I’m not going to work dirty. Every other day is what works for me. I also workout, so if I workout days in a row my hair is getting washed.
It’s hard for me to go more than a day without washing my hair since I have seborrheic dermatitis. When I don’t wash my hair, it flairs this up and it gets super, super itchy and those plaques of gross skin start to form. Washing my hair frequently keeps my seborrheic dermatitis at bay unfortunately😞
Because unfortunately, training the scalp is a myth.. It's more genetic and hormonal. I have the same problem since I'm a teen. Tried absolutely everything and nothing changed my hair 😒😔

Wouldn't dry shampoo have the same effect as over washing? Like it takes away the oil and makes your scalp think it needs to produce more oil.. or is it different?
My hair did not use to be overly oily. Since my late teens early 20s it has progressively worsen over the years (I have even lost half of my hair density). I kid you not I have tried "retraining" my hair. I went over 6 months washing my hair every other 3rd/4th day and it's still excessively oily. I have tried all these tips over the years with no results 😢. Do you have any other advice?
This sounds like it might be related to hormones or diet or something internal. You might want to check your hormone or thyroid levels. I believe there are home tests available these days at a drugstore. I have always had very fine, prone to oily hair. When I was in grade school, I used to flip my hair over in sections and dust (used a makeup brush) the tiniest amount of baby powder (or cornstarch) on the roots, just to absorb some of the awful greeseiness that would build up literally overnight. It's gotten much better in my adult years, and I've discovered other products that are less risky.
I am the same way. I started to bleach my hair and then color over it every few months. It basically fries the grease out lol. There is tons of people on Reddit etc who do this. It’s worth it for us super greasy gals! 🤷♀️ I’m platinum blonde for a day or so then dye over it with my natural brown color. Changed my whole life. Oh and blow drying more often. Drying it out! Good luck!

I had mentioned that in a different video. Thank you so much for all the information😊
Jonathan recommended around 8:55 using the JVN conditioner that had aloe leaf juice, which reminds me: a dermatologist on yt recommended to *not* use conditioners with oils in their ingredient list, because that can contribute to your hair looking oily faster… so aloe leaf juice is a nice alternative for delivering moisture to the scalp. I haven’t been _regularly_ conditioning my scalp for a while, just focusing on my lower shaft and ends, so I’m very curious about trying a volumizing conditioner for my scalp. I’ve seen dermatologist on yt recommending salicylic acid shampoos and pre-poos treatments, as well as clarifying shampoos to treat an oily scalp, I’m curious what Jonathan’s perspective is on those recommendations. I appreciate the wealth of other thoughtful tips provided though and can’t wait to see how they work for me!! 💖💖
Love your personality on camera. I'd consider consulting a board certified dermatologist about this though. An oily scalp is more about genetics, diet, topical ingredients, environmental exposure, hormonal fluctuations, and hygiene practices like you mentioned (shampooing effectively, touching your hair less, cleansing frequency, clean towels and styling tools, etc). Sebum production is simply a biological function, not a response to whether you've shampooed recently or not. Personally, I've played around with shampooing frequency and I just can't go without washing every day or every other day at most. Using a salicylic acid shampoo semi-regularly seems to leave my scalp feeling pretty clarified during oiler times. I also don't think dry shampoo should be a frequent go-to for most people. It's not a cleansing agent as it's marketed, it's cost prohibitive for many, and can be really irritating to the scalp and respiratory system causing more problems. With an oily scalp, I find it's best to use only in a pinch to freshen up midday/event strictly to help maintain your hair style, but it's not a rinse and lather shampoo replacement.
Will JVN be producing a dry shampoo in the future? I hope so! Is there a dry shampoo you recommend? I’ve only ever used Batiste due to them having a dry shampoo for darker hair. Open to recommendations!
I tried the washing less often but got impatient, thanks for the tips, I shall try again! It's soooo hard when you've been used to washing it every day :O
It took me a while to train my hair to not be washed as much. I was washing every day, so I went to every other day. Then I went to every third day and so on.
Wowwwww... Jonathan, Jonathan, Jonathan... I am really happy and ever so much thankful that I hav came across your video regarding Greasy hair. For years I hav battled so much with greasy hair/roots, and have spent a fortune searching here in the UK for suitable shampoos conditioners treatments etc fr my hair. At one point I hav even wanted to shave all my hair off as I was feeling so disgusting dirty because of my hair being like this. I wash my hair every couple of days. I read every bit of information on the back of shampoo bottles etc to figure what the ingredients are that are in them. I am currently using Rosemary shampoo and would love to know your thoughts regarding Rosemary shampoos? . I believe I should be avoiding dimethicone which is just one of the things but I'm not so sure about the others but Thanks to you, you have given such great tips in this video and I am even more clearer regarding what to avoid in shampoos etc.. This video was so informative and certainly did find it helpful. Thank youuu soo much
For overwashing .but using the shampoo right out of the bottle does strip the oil too much. By doluting the shampoo with 1/4 of the shampoo 3/4 with water in a travel size container help me out
I grew up being taught to wash my hair daily, with cheap shampoo like prell and suave. I chose based on the scents, and was never taught how to care for my hair. I air dried it, slept on it wet. My mother pinned me down and chopped off my hair into an ugly bob from 5 years old to when I physically fought her at 11. At that point I didn't let anyone touch my hair. In high school I washed daily, but with the wrong products and was shamed for being greasy, but never taught. In college I copied my friends, who were using shampoo made for more curly dry hair. Finally I decided I just have oily hair and I bought clarifying shampoos that I used daily. I'm just now starting to challenge the idea that my hair is innately greasy and learn more about hair care. It took until my mid 20s to really start figuring it out. I now have enough days off and the opportunity to decide to wash my hair before work if I really need to, so I've been experimenting with skipping days, overnight heatless curls, blow drying on cool etc to see how my hair responds. I finally actually like my hair and feel pretty most days😊
When I started working from home, I pretty quickly switched up my shower routine and I definitely noticed an improvement in the oiliness of my hair after a couple months. And then I started using this shampoo bar which made everything about my hair feel better. But because my hair is so thin and fine, I am still super aware of the oil and I still have to wash it every other day if I plan on leaving my house at all, lol. But I'm definitely going to try the oil treatment because I would like a little more control over the situation!
I could never go longer than every other day washes. My hair gets Soooo prickly and itchy on day 3 😢 Sadly, it looks so good on day 2. Day 1 it's too frizzly and dryish
The best thing I have done for my dry hair is use the Monsia Kleen filtered shower head, you can really see the difference in your skin and hair after only a few showers.
Thank you Johnathan! I needed this! I listened to this one youtuber's advice to use Redken volume shampoo (chock full of Sodium Lauryl and Ammonium Laureth Sulphate), Olaplex and other products, and it totally ruined my wavy hair 😭. What you say makes so much sense; your scalp is meant to have oil. Scalp care isn't about getting rid of all it's oils- it's about balancing them. Gonna get myself some hydrating shampoo 🥰
Oh my hat it should be illegal how beautiful you look in this video! My hair gets oily fast because it is a short bob at the moment but it is winter in South Africa and my scalp and skin on my face especially are SOOO dry. I can't keep washing my hair so much. I could stretch washes out when my hair was long😢😢😢
My hair is super fine and curly and gets very oily on the second day. I've found that aside from what he mentioned, using a diluted ACV mixture on my scalp and ends (leave on for 5min after shampooing and before conditioning) has made such a huge difference in my scalps health and oil production.
Loves this video! What would you recommend if I workout almost every day of the week so it gets very sweaty (two of those days include chlorine from swimming)????
Thank you for this video. I’m not as oily as I use to be. Except after the gym. Do you have suggestions on keep from having to wash my hair after every gym session? Side note: I switched over to your products and they have TRANSFORMED my hair. I thought I had straight hair, but it’s actually wavy.
I started using a frizz free shampoo for 2 months and my scalp has become sooooo oily. I haven't had this much oil since I was a teen. Can the wrong shampoo really do that in is it something else? I follow all of these tips already. My routine hasn't changed.
my issue with oily hair is that i workout everyday so i don’t know how to balance washing my hair between workouts while also jot over washing and exacerbating the oily-ness.
I just love watching Jonathan's videos. I don't even care what the discussion is about. Let's have a discussion about cute animals or not-so-cute animals!
The problem I have is products making my hair oily and weighed down when it’s humid out. I wake up and my hair still looks wet from whatever I put on it. I don’t put a ton but most of the time these products work for me.
Thank you for all of these tips! My hair products are solely JVN and your new hair mask IS TO DIE FOR. It's saving me in this Midwest heat. My hair is not used to it coming from New England lol. Love you!!
Ok after almost 10 years of using dry shampoo I finally learned how to properly use it thanks to your video!!! rinsing by sections and the brush type and cleaning then, are tips that have been extremely helpful in my case. Never used pre scalp oil before, wish I could buy JVN oil in 🇩🇪😢!. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us❤
Love you JVN but these tips are def not a 'one size fits all'. I did all of this over some months and my scalp stayed oily, never resolved and I ended up with scalp acne and dreadful itchy scalp from the oil build up. Lots of derms say an oily scalp can be hormonal or just your DNA and if your scalp is oily to wash it. Tying hair back while trying to 'train' my scalp/hair then caused tension hair loss which I still have. It simply did not work for me and caused terrible consequences.
Thanks for explaining how to properly clean brushes, it's something I always struggled with. Question, how do you feel about organic, sulfate free shampoo bars? And also tangle free brushes? Do you also have a recommendation for wide tooth combs or combs in general for in and out of the shower?
Hi! I have a question 🙋🏻♀️ I have fine hair and whatever I do my hair going to be flat or like a feather.😔 i tried everything; rollers, curling, hair spray etc. and also im using shampoo for fine hair, but whatever i do my hair doesn’t look good… Now I have medium length, light brown hair, should I have short and more dark hair???
love u but there are just ppl with greasy hair. i have had very greasy hair since i was a young child. i have never heat treated or dyed my hair in my life (in my mid 20s now) and for 4 years i was washing my hair twice a week and following most if not all of these tips at time. i have very fine and thin pin straight hair. even after these years of trying techniques, my hair was still getting noticably greasy about 6 hours after washing. i now wash my hair twice a day before bed and when i wake up as my hair is greasy by the morning time but also is very greasy by bed time, making me feel gross. i now use no products in my hair besides shampoo and my hair looks and feels the most healthy it ever has.
I have a question for us boys and girls that really WANT healthy luscious hair like yours and want to go days on end without needing to wash our hair but don’t know how. For example. I work as a ups package handler who sweats her ass off in 110 degree steel hot boxes loading 5-150lb boxes into trailers. So… needless to say when I get off work it looks like I jumped in a pool fully clothed. Oh, and! The dust floating in the air that gets kicked up in the trailers latch to my sticky body and hair (literally turns into mud). I could go on and on about all the bugs (since we are down by the river) and such that lead to the decision that I feel like…. I neeeeeed to wash my hair everyday.. 😢 heeelp, is there anything us laborers can do that work in extreme heat and nastiness?
This is definitely something I need to work on...I have such oily hair! I think I will try and wash every other day and use the dry shampoo you recommended. Thank you for the information, the more you know. Love your Ted Talks! ♥️🤣

I've washed my hair daily for at least a decade... in december I started a strict 2-3x a week washing routine with dry shampoo in between the hairwashing. I see absolutely no progress and I am fucking desperate and really don't know what else to do 😭
Tbh I think some people are just oily and need to wash more often. I have always had oily skin and hair, and “training” my scalp absolutely did not work. I have had results with the Inkey List Salicylic Acid scalp treatment as well as making sure my roots dry with some volume - either blow drying the roots upside down or flipping my hair every few mins while it air dries. Washing every other day or every two days is more reasonable for me before I get itchy. I’d say aim for whatever keeps you feeling your best - just like food, our skin and hair are not one size fits all. Good luck friend
You're like my hair Mom! At 36, I'm still trying to figure out how to handle my thick curls. I am a construction inspector and work outside everyday with a hardhat on. I'm dying here and might shave it all off 🙄 I absolutely love my job but it's killing my locks.

Don't use Batiste. Talc.
I tried the washing less often but got impatient, thanks for the tips, I shall try again! It's soooo hard when you've been used to washing it every day :O
It took me a while to train my hair to not be washed as much. I was washing every day, so I went to every other day. Then I went to every third day and so on.
So informative!! Seriously the most I've ever learned about my hair. These 12 mins more useful than a year of geometry 🤣
What about dry scalp and normal ends?
Thanks for this! You’re the best. Working the oil out now with your embody set. ❤
This is so helpful! Any suggestions for heat protection products that won’t make thin hair feel more oily on day 2? I’m struggling!
What shampoo / soap would you recommend we wash our brushes in? Love you 🥰
I’ve been hoping you’d talk about cleaning brushes and yay you have! 😍
I have dry scalp/hair but I'm still here for the vibes ❤😂
Thanks ❤. I was waiting exactly for this video 👏
Me trying to pay attention to what JVN is saying but being too distracted by how much I LOVE THAT TOP.
Where’d you get it, girl???
Do you have a video for dry scalp with dandruff?
I could never go longer than every other day washes. My hair gets Soooo prickly and itchy on day 3 😢
Sadly, it looks so good on day 2. Day 1 it's too frizzly and dryish
Never. Ever. Change. ❤️💗❤️💗💕❤️
🥰🥰
This video came at the perfect time in my life. I never had oily hair til now and I’m freaking out about how to handle it
The best thing I have done for my dry hair is use the Monsia Kleen filtered shower head, you can really see the difference in your skin and hair after only a few showers.
How often do you use ACV mixture? Everyone's opinion differ
hi Jonathan , is there any advice for girls in asian coutries, how often should we wash our hairs? because the weather here is humid.
Loves this video! What would you recommend if I workout almost every day of the week so it gets very sweaty (two of those days include chlorine from swimming)????
How do you avoid having dandruff? is it inevitable if you have a thyroid issue? :(
Thank you for this video. I’m not as oily as I use to be. Except after the gym. Do you have suggestions on keep from having to wash my hair after every gym session?
Side note: I switched over to your products and they have TRANSFORMED my hair. I thought I had straight hair, but it’s actually wavy.
Do you have any wide tooth comb or boar bristle brushes you would recommend? 💗
what shampoo do i use for oily scalp everyday other than using clarifying shampoo 1-2 a month?
Do you ever need sulphates in shampoo?
This is so perfect and helpful, you are the BEST 🥰🤩😻💜
Washing my fringe in the sink by itself was a game changer.
Same. I basically stopped running so I could grow my hair 😭
My hairstylist told me to just blow dry my hair after a massive sweat and it worked. Give it a try. I was sure it would be gross, but it wasn’t.
Help, I work out everyday and live in hot and humid climate! Does this still apply to me?
I was today years old when I learned I am supposed to be cleaning my brushes with SOAP.
Thank you for all of these tips! My hair products are solely JVN and your new hair mask IS TO DIE FOR. It's saving me in this Midwest heat. My hair is not used to it coming from New England lol. Love you!!
My issue is psoriasis in the scalp making it dry
I often can't even get through a day without my hair getting oily :(
Ok after almost 10 years of using dry shampoo I finally learned how to properly use it thanks to your video!!! rinsing by sections and the brush type and cleaning then, are tips that have been extremely helpful in my case. Never used pre scalp oil before, wish I could buy JVN oil in 🇩🇪😢!. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us❤
i would love to oil my hair but i have seborrheic dermatitis and i am scared it might get worse :((
Love you JVN but these tips are def not a 'one size fits all'.
Hi! I have a question 🙋🏻♀️ I have fine hair and whatever I do my hair going to be flat or like a feather.😔 i tried everything; rollers, curling, hair spray etc. and also im using shampoo for fine hair, but whatever i do my hair doesn’t look good…
Now I have medium length, light brown hair, should I have short and more dark hair???
I wash my hair once or max twice a week and my hair is still getting super oily. It got worse with per-menopause.
I think my issue was overwashing, thanks for tue video!
love u but there are just ppl with greasy hair. i have had very greasy hair since i was a young child. i have never heat treated or dyed my hair in my life (in my mid 20s now) and for 4 years i was washing my hair twice a week and following most if not all of these tips at time. i have very fine and thin pin straight hair. even after these years of trying techniques, my hair was still getting noticably greasy about 6 hours after washing. i now wash my hair twice a day before bed and when i wake up as my hair is greasy by the morning time but also is very greasy by bed time, making me feel gross. i now use no products in my hair besides shampoo and my hair looks and feels the most healthy it ever has.
I've been using JVN scalp oil with the volume shampoo and conditioner (every 2-3 days) for a couple of months. My scalp is still flakey. I need help. I've been suffering from hair loss and flakey scalp especially along the hair line (caused by the product). After seeing the wonders JVN did on queer eye I hoped I could finally feel secure about my hair. After a month my scalp is still itchy and flakey. It's not working 😭 JVN please help me beautiful. I'm at a loss. I had to wear a hair piece for my wedding just so I could wear my vale. I long to have bangs but I have no hair up top. 🥺
Thank you so much for the info we love you Jonathan🌞🌈
Thanks ❤
Thanks for posting J
I literally wash my hair every day it's going crazy oily so much I use head and shoulders shampoo once I wash it its smooth and awesome but next day oily af
I can’t wait for Jvn to be available in Denmark!!!!
Love you JVN ❤
Love you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've got seborrheic dermatitis and I've been washing my hair once a week with ketoconazole shampoo for some time now and it's perfect litterally right after drying but then it becomes so greasy the next day :/ What am I doing wrong?
Thank you Hair Goddess I am now armed and ready to break the oily cycle 😊
OOh, what did you do different today with your makeup? Something's different, and it's extra pretty!
You're like my hair Mom! At 36, I'm still trying to figure out how to handle my thick curls. I am a construction inspector and work outside everyday with a hardhat on. At the end of the day it's a sweaty mop of dirt grime. How do I handle it when I HAVE to wash it everyday?!?!? I'm dying here and might shave it all off 🙄 I absolutely love my job but it's killing my locks.
