Being able to edit so many parameters on DS-10, like being able to redefine the entire drum sounds, is what made it so powerful. Using one of the drums as a bass synth, and one drum as both hat + snare by manipulating the pitch & gate, and layering higher-pitch kick under snare were my favorite tricks to get most out of those beats...not forgetting the fake sidechain effects with note volume automation.

A big part of why Korg DS-10 (and its later iterations incl. Korg Gadget for the Switch) work as well as they do, despite their limitations, is because of the lineage the product has to game music; the lead designers on the original Korg DS-10 were Nobuyoshi Sano and Yasunori Mitsuda, two legendary game score composers, with Sano in particular having a long history and fascination with synthesizers and electronic music. Nobuyoshi Sano had previously worked with the software’s actual developer, Cavia Inc, (AQ Interactive were merely the publishers), and it was through that prior relationship that Sano (through his own company/record label, DETUNE Inc.), managed to strike up a partnership with Korg themselves, leading to the continuation of the line through to today. Products in the line have been used by some fairly notable figures, from Sano and Mitsuda themselves to other game composers, and artists such as Anthony Seeha and RoBKTA.
I would be interested in hearing your take on MUSIC™️ 2000 by the by, for a very specific reason; I didn’t just start out making music using it, I have *consistently* used it (with aid from an external sample library and additional effects/tools via software like Wavepad, VocoderX, Microsoft TTS emulations etc.) for my entire career as a musician, to the point of actively making it a part of my “brand” to use it; I’ve gone out of my way to push the program to it’s absolute limits, to the point of creating a minialbum where, barring some small vocal stings provided by myself, everything was done using only what the program itself offered as standard. I’m curious how the software would shake up to someone who not only isn’t intimately familiar with it, but also has done a lot of work with DAW-less setups, which is arguably the farthest thing away from the experience in both setup/execution and the degree of freedom allowed as you can possibly get. That and- though I’m clearly biased ;)- I think it fits the mould of a Bad Gear candidate, appearing to be Not That Great or Very Limited from the outside but having much more going for it fr those willing to give it a chance, or those that it’s specific quirks and features really speak to.

Tiny nitpick: AQ Interactive is the publisher. The developer was Cavia, a somewhat obscure Japanese game development studio for hire. They developed the original Nier for example, its predecessor Drakengard, and the Resident Evil Chronicles series for Nintendo Wii. Cavia no longer exists, but the team responsible for DS-10 started a new company called Detune and continued working with Korg. Their most recent release was Korg Gadget for the Nintendo Switch.

Hey AudioPilz, I'm so glad to see the DS-10 in your channel.
In 2011 this game opened the doors for the world of synthesizers and changed my life in many wyas.
As a teenager without computer and money, the ability to my own sounds and music was so mind blowing. I wish I still had my Queen Mary funeral version back them. You can actually "hack" the drums to work as note synths and get a bigger polyphony XD.
Because the DS-10 I got to the Korg Gadget, and because of the Gadget (and a long story) l now work at Korg myself with the engineer who did the DS-10 himself.
Hopefully, in the future I can see something I work with in your show.
If you happen to use it again, I super recommend use the Kaoss Pad with some blues/penta/phrygian scales for some dope small-portamento 2000-and-I-had-hair nintendogs pen-sliding solos.

Loved the ds-10! I never got on with the sequencing but the synthesis was perfect for sampling.
I used to use the ds-10 on my commutes to create patches and record them at home. From there, I would dump the recordings in to a hacked PSP and use a homebrew tracker software (called Little Game Park Tracker aka piggy tracker or LGPT) to write music with my ds-10 sounds.

This program taught me so much about synth without even realizing it. Other than fruity loops in the early 2000's, and Reason, I first started making electronic music with DS-10 + some thrift shop synths, pedals, and game boys.
Later on, after owning more traditional style synths for several years, I came back to it with a better understanding of synthesis and immediately realized how capable this thing could be, considering what it is. I still occasionally make video jams with it from time to time.
Whenever I pull out the DS-10, it always sounds fresh yet timeless to me.
I have the same feelings about Korg Gadget. I think it is really great but a lot of people have trouble working it into their setup. Standalone, with the korg Bluetooth nanokey studio controllers, it is a great DAW/Groovebox as well as a midi sequencer/bridge for external synths.

good job again - love the old DS-10
nice Volca Astroglide joke too - those memes never die :-)
and I’m glad you covered the other DS synth apps - you missed the DS-10+ upgrade version which ran on the 2DS XL and 3DS, etc. with better CPU and audio quality - it ran more channels and had better sound quality overall - the graphic synth you showed called DSN-12 was cool but I never got a chance to try it - the M01 even had some Korg 0/1w sounds on it :-)
I got used to based apps from the old PalmPilot and Compaq iPaq (PocketPC) days an eventually the Roland PMA-5 with a SoundCanvas inside - look at that one sometime, it’s pretty fun - also on the PocketPC line there was an incredible DAW app called PocketGriff with a sampler (keymaps and all), a couple of synths, layered FX, automation including hand drawn, and MIDI output to other gear - a hell of a powerful app
my friend used to make some great DS-10 demos on his train commutes and I had some fun with it, but I was still learning synths at the time so I never mastered it, but it was powerful and expressive - way ahead of Pocket Operators, NTS-1, and other good music gadgets with a toylike, fun approach - it’s funny how a lot of the user comments you shared mention toylike but still couldn’t figure out how to make it work or work well, the joke was on them since there was a learning curve like any synth product with many features and some basic knowledge required… not a toy
the pattern mute and other groove box options were quite nice
the audio sync and envelope follower demo was cool, I never tried that, just basic audio sync with other gear and my Juno-6 sync input
a little later iPad apps took over where the Korg DS-10 and M01 started and are really incredible audio and music tools these days - there are even VCV Rack like modular environment for iOS - the Korg iMS-20 for iPad is really nice, as well as apps like Wavestation, MonoPoly, and Kaossilator
on the DS and DS-lite, the GBA slot had a hack where you go could buy or make a hacked midi GBA cartridge with actual wired MIDI but I never tried that - there was also a way with DS homebrew boot environments like Moonshell to do wireless MIDI but again a lot of hacking and trial and error attempts to make it work
the homebrew market for DS music apps was quite cool with lots of varied app like a Tenori-on clone that you could load your own samples, as well as synths and special soft controllers - it was nerdy but fun

How did this make the “bad gear” list? The DS-10 was brilliant! This wasn’t really designed for a novice or the “gamer”. Korg released this for musicians. If I remember correctly the ds had a resistive touchscreen. In theory you could send a precise tap anywhere on the screen to the ds by feeding the touchscreen input connectors the right resistance values for x and y. So a microcontroller could interface the little touch keyboard with a midi controller (only one note at a time).

    • @AudioPilz
      @AudioPilz  3 года назад

Could you run it in parallel to an existing screen?

@@AudioPilz Since the touchscreen contacts only close when you press on the screen probably yes. Would be cool to have a 4 connector p2 jack connected direct to the screen on the ds for a removable mod.

      @JasonOzolins 3 года назад +2

If you are using the Kaoss Pad for note entry, you can hold the resistive touchpad in one spot and get interesting scale effects dragging the note input around with a moving stylus/finger applying pressure elsewhere. The touchscreen averages out the two resistive inputs.
This is assuming you set a KP scale where the intermediate notes are going to sound OK, rather than the default chromatic scale.
That was how I did parts of the solo in this track (at 1:15): soundcloud.com/difficult-listening/hot-pursuit

@@designator7402 you tried the KORG Gadget for the switch, it's an actual groivebix based device with oddly impressive synthesis options and it's surprisingly deep

You never fail to surprise or amaze. Happy new year, Florian 😀
There's a whole slew of sub 100 UKP retro consoles that can play any game (in emulation), from gameboy onwards, so it'd be interesting to see (and hear) how they'd emulate this and other music software, without styli (plural stylus) based interfaces.
This deserves props, for kind of being a more bona fide precursor to all the ipad and android based synths , DAW's and groovebox style apps you can get today.
In the same way you wouldn't admit to falling asleep in your own vomit (or someone else's for that matter), thousands would never admit to owning this. Not even for inverse musical kistch-cred.
I tried to get to grips with it years ago, and gave up in an hour. It helped that Korg themselves had already made some of the finest grooveboxes available to man, and that they were nearby too. Not only were (and are) they easier to use, they're better made, can connect to most other bits of kit and they have resale value.
Like 2020, this app lingered, amused, infuriated and kept you enthralled now and then.
Unlike 2020, it's still here. Furthermore, there is no vaccine available to eradicate it, so approach it with caution.

I literally just bought Korg Gadget for the Nintendo Switch last week. Nice timing. I know others have mentioned its existence, and it has fewer gadgets than the iOS version, but it does have some cool features. It's designed to be usable for real-time collaboration with 4 split-screens and simultaneous use of multiple controllers by up to 4 people, which is pretty unique. Also, I just dug into my closet and it turns out I bought Korg DS-10 years ago and forgot I had it.
