  • We're moving back home after 10 years in NYC to fix up a 1914 schoolhouse and turn it into a modern home! You can see more photos + story over on our IG. :) / schoolhousehomestead
This video shows the progress we've made as of May 2023. We. Finally. Have. WINDOWS!!! We ordered these back in August of 22 after about 400 emails back and forth with the company. By far the most expensive thing we’ve ever bought, and the thing I’ve been most excited about since we got a new roof. This schoolhouse restoration project will make you lose a lot of sleep but holding strong that it will all be worth it. :)

You are living my dream. There is an old public school near me from 1924, that hasn't had students in decades. I think it has 3 or 4 classrooms. I would love to buy it, and fix it up as a home/studio space.

Those upstairs windows with transoms have the same upper and lower sash grid patterns as the ones we had installed when our home was built. We wanted long windows that nearly went from floor to ceiling. Since our ceilings are a normal height off the floor we didn't have room for transoms. Really love your long windows!

I'm glad you're redoing the doors. Doors are not made today like they were years ago. I live in a house built in 1924, with original doors.

Im glad to see that you're framing in for insulation on all of the exterior walls.
I'm even more glad to see that you're replacing all of your electrical lines. That would be my biggest fear with an old structure. Wiring was sketchy at best in those days.

In 1970, my classmates and I exited our town’s old elementary school as the last class to utilize it. The new school was ready for students. So, we were the last students no NOT attend the new elementary school. What amazing character the old building had. What horrible foresight our local board of school directors had. Within weeks of our exit, that old building was demolished and the property graded over. It still looks exactly as it did the day after the old lot was cleared of debris. The old building was probably too large to renovate into a home, but it was historic. I believe the directors had it torn down before anybody could fuss. Nice job with your project(s).

I bought an old house and had to replace 9 windows right away....the cost made my jaw drop for sure! The next surprise was the cost for Curtains for all of those windows! I still need to replace at least nine more windows but don't even dare at this point. Yikes!
I'm sure your windows are costing more than the building, by the time you're done. Loving this journey we're taking with you. 😊👍

I'll be interested to see what your heating costs actually turn out to be. I feel like you may be underestimating the benefits of thermal mass, especially with those high ceilings. Do those transom windows open providing air flow for heat to escape in the summer? Fascinating project. Hoping you do a video breaking down the numbers.

We definitely have that on the list to figure out. We can't put panels on the new roof because it will void the warranty, but we're figuring out other solutions. First step, get some plumbing in the house... then get some solar haha.
