  • An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a unique nine-digit number that identifies your business for tax purposes. It's similar to your social security number, but it's meant for business-related items only.
    Obtaining an EIN is a great way to protect your personal identity because then you can give vendors and employees your EIN instead of your social security number.
    You can obtain an EIN right on the IRS website, and you should get one for each entity that you create. Most lawyers will include this as one of the steps when creating your entity for you, but some do not, and it's not an automatic process, so ensure that you have an EIN and you can locate it when needed.
