  • Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo joins assistant sports editor Adam Bittner to react to the Steelers' selection of Washington OT Troy Fautanu on Day 1 of the NFL draft. Will he start from Day 1 at right tackle? Or will he need time to develop like Broderick Jones did a year ago? How soon will Fautanu's selection allow Jones to work from the left side? And where does Dan Moore Jr. fit in this mix? Was Fautanu the tackle GM Omar Khan and Mike Tomlin had their eye on from the start? Or were names like JC Latham, Taliese Fuaga and Amarius Mims higher on their big board?
Our duo tackles those questions, then gets into the team's Day 2 needs. Could the Steelers trade up in the second round for a center prospect like Jackson Powers-Johnson or Zach Frazier? Does the run on projected Day 2 receivers like Ricky Pearsall and Xavier Legette add pressure to select guys like Roman Wilson and Malachi Corley while they're available? And are there any other Day 2 names Ray is watching?

Good chance powers-Johnson &/or Frazier are there at 51 with the teams ahead of us. Carolina & Arizona need centers but have bigger needs. have to wait & see.

Let’s not under appreciate the fact that Assistant GM, Andy Weidl’s believes in building a championship offense by starting with the OL. There is no question in my mind that Andy’s influence is all over the choice of selecting Troy in round one to fortify the OL.
Come on man! It goes without saying that OC, Arthur Smith is smiling ear right now. We may see him do a back flip if Omar can get his blue chip center tonight. Having Broderick and Troy as the Steelers’ book ends on the OL, in addition to getting their blue chip center, will allow new OC, Arthur Smith to be creative with his play calling.
Now imagine how Najee and Jaylen will feel when they see that Omar, Andy and coach Tomlin turn the OL into one of the top five in the league.

If we don’t have an above average number two then every team will just double or triple Pickens and we won’t be able to throw the ball. And if we can’t throw the ball it makes it easier to predict and stop the run.

Plus now if we get lucky enough that Zach Frazier falls to us in 2nd rd that means it won't be till 3rd rd for a wr and we won't get somebody there who will be a #2 next year. Not to mention we needed to come out of this draft with a #2 or 3 CB. There are good OT who will go in 3rd and 4th rd. It needed to be Barton rd 1 WR rd 2 then CB and OT in rd 3. Taking a OT in rd 1 has made it almost impossible to fill our C WR CB holes in this draft. The only thing that can help us is if Cory trice is the real deal.
