The song really has very little to do with the story of Peter Pan. That story is just briefly used as a metaphor to evoke a time and place where a young couple's life was filled with wonder. The song is actually the story (a very common one) of a long-time couple whose spark has been greatly diminished by the hardships of life, and a man who is longing to go back to that time when young love consumed them both. The lyrics about "won't you fly again" and the mention of Neverland is a metaphor for that sums up nicely that longing to return to when life was filled to overflowing with romantic love.
