Was first outboard given to me growing up still an old favorite. You Cantonese 58 Johnson’s one of strongest engines ever produced it saw time of back of a orange Montgomery 12 aluminum v hull, a 24, alaumacraft and 13 Boston whaler before upgrading power to 25 Johnson on whaler still have that 58 johnson 7.5 in boat shed feels more like 10 hp was an over built and durable little engine.

They’re definitely staple of 1950’s outboard technology. If it weren’t for the crummy rods and lack of roller bearings throughout, they would have been the top of the heap. I still very much enjoy running them.

This one sounds very nice. Its such a nice motor year 1958 and they made so many of them. In those days they were affordable to everyone. I have quite a few 1958 Johnson motors mostly 18HP.Just got one for $5 on E-bay recently clean one....

I agree. It was definitely a high point for OMC in ‘58. Congrats on your $5 engine!

My brother and I had these engines so many years ago as kids, they spent more time under the salt water than on top of it... But, we always managed to get em going again. This one really scoots along, intrigued by your "custom props". The rods are the weak point on these engines, gotta stick with the original 16:1 oil mix to avoid "ventilating the crankcase". Show me a four stroke that runs this nice....

Gave me a chuckle with the time spent comment. I vote for these 7.5’s being one of the top 5 best running and useable outboards ever built.

She goes very well for a 70 yr old 7.5 indeed.

Nice! I've got one, but I had to put the wrong badge on it. I thought it would look better than an empty spot tho!
