Great Job Mickayla! Taylor makes for a great taste tester too! I enjoy these types of video because it often gives me fresh ideas. You accomplished a lot in this video. How nice to know that you’ve got some meal options ready to go on those long busy days!
I loved when Acre Homestead also pointed out how canning also reduces waste... No single use cans or jars!! You definitely motivated me to try making my own BBQ sauce!!
IF you haven't tried it before , Lay the can opener down, so the cutting wheel goes around the outside of the can under the lip. Takes the whole top off that way.
Looks great! You don’t see many homesteaders that are vegetarians. Definitely makes it a little bit complicated to cook separate meals, (coming from experience), but the way you are doing it sure simplifies things. Great job. 😊
Way to go .. so my son works for a restaurant supply where the restaurants pick up their meat or any supplies they need and he gets a great discount so he buys me that pack of meat quite often and I do the same. I put it in 1 pound portions and food save it and put it in my freezer now he does that with the meat for tacos or slithered meat he does that as well and anything I even need for the garden you know the restaurant supply sells them giant scoops for ice but I use them for soil in my garden. I can buy from the restaurant supply I have discount is way much better so I buy a lot of bulk items and I do freeze. I buy a bowl of cheese and I freeze it. We are only three I am an empty Nester , I have three grown boys with their families of their own so we really don’t go through too much but I do like to buy in bulk so we don’t get out. My husband is very sick and my father-in-law has dementia so it’s kinda hard for me to get out…plus I feel I save money buying in bulk. There’s a store here in Houston Texas called Joey‘s and I can buy a flat of something for like so cheap. I do my own beans. I even freeze my beans if I don’t can them freezer meals I wish I could but what I do is, I’ll cook an item in the next day, we have a different way so if I make a chicken baked chicken the next day, Wood making chicken tacos with roast roast roast beef tacos🌮 🥘
Awesome job! It all looks delicious, and way to crush it out! 💪 Thanks for the comparison in prices, much appreciated. Like minded friends from Wyoming Z&F
Make sure you check your J’s receipt. Last week, we were overcharged on all of our ice cream. We don’t live close like you guys do. Oh well. Still good deals to be had.
I think by doing your own thing or loosely following a recipe is amazing. I also love the math. The only thing i have a question about is the canning, if it is tomato based are you able to have more freedom because of the acid in tomatoes? Sorry if this is a silly question but i always hear that it is dangerous nit to follow the recipe. Thanks for videos.
You want to make sure the acidity ratio stays above the threshold of safety, but I’m just adding additional seasonings. If I were majorly changing it in other ways then I’d probably pressure can it.
Also, with the BBQ sauce regarding the starch. The reason starch isn’t supposed to be used in canning is because it can make things too thick for the heat to reach the center properly, but this sauce is no thicker than an applesauce/apple butter and im not concerned personally, but, again, it’s a decision you have to make for yourself & do your own research. I try to be quite cautious with canning.
I was wondering, how much do you really save making your own yogurt at home - and then you answered. Thanks. And then I sat back and watched the rest and you came through with the execution and costing for the rest. You obviously invested a lot of time (and love) in the prep. How would you guess-ti-mate your personal labor cost into this? I realize that this is not necessarily an easy, or even fair, question. But, do you feel it was worth your time and would you keep doing it? I say that having made home-canned food and afterwards thinking, next time I'll just buy the can....and then getting disgusted at the cost and can contents at the store and doing it all again. It really has to have that ingredient of love in it.
This is such a great question. I will say that I’m not a purist whatsoever with this stuff, so obviously I prefer to use high quality ingredients/buy high quality products but saving money is a big motivator for me, too, as well as time. It just depends on which thing I need to “save” more on any given day. Examples: - when these jars run out, if I haven’t had time to prep more of them I won’t hesitate to grab a can of manwich etc in a pinch. Sometimes that’s the easiest option and it’s okay. - it was raining nonstop this weekend, so my time was put to good use in the kitchen. Itll save me a lot of time running to the store, preparing individual future meals when it’s 9pm coming in from the garden and I’m starving. So in this circumstance, spending the time that I had available was worth it to me. - maybe in the future I will have more money to dedicate to high quality ingredients as opposed to the salvage store ingredients that I don’t really have a good gauge on quality/sourcing. Each of these scenarios “save” me different things. They either save time, save money, or favor quality. BUT the biggest factor? I enjoy cooking. Spending time in the kitchen makes me happy. If it didn’t, I would probably prioritize convenience more. So my labor cost doesn’t really factor in hugely for me because I just truly enjoy it. I hope this gives some insight😅❤️
Our salvage store is like a discount store that various groceries send their “old” stock or about-to-expire items just to make room for new stuff on their shelves. They exist all over the place, I don’t usually say the name publicly so I just call it “the salvage store”. You can get breads, frozen food, meat, produce, boxed items etc even pet food for a massive discount. We have gotten our cat food that’s usually $45 per bag for $5 a bag, organic canned foods for 25 cents, organic cereal for 50 cents, ice cream (Ben & Jerry’s!) for $1. It’s a magical place😆
It was the cheapest one I could buy on prime day last July. It’s still going strong & only cost me $20, but it’s nothing special. I doubt it’ll last more than two years if I’m being honest. I’ll likely upgrade when I have the funds.
It’s not called salvage store, just a local store that has discount items. You can find salvage stores/discount stores/grocery outlets all over the place
We're not vegetarian but I'm definitely incorporating lentil sloppy Joe's just for a cost savings !!!! feeding kiddos healthy right now is hard with prices.
@@calicocowacres I love to cut my ground beef for sloppy joes with lentils. I usually also mince up some mushrooms in the food processor and that adds back some of the umami flavor. Sometimes, I'll just straight up do the mushroom and lentil combo only. Either way it's so good.
@@calicocowacres that's cool. My husband and I started being vegetarian back in 2020. He is still for the most part, he will eat fish occasionally. I started adding a little meat back to my diet last year. However, I'm still not eating pork or red meat. What is your recipe for veggie sausage patties? Keep up the good work.
@@ChickadeeMountainHomestead we were both veg for 5 years and I started to reincorporate meat last year, too, just because that’s what felt right. He’s still fully veg though! Loved the background sounds as you showed your garden ! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ your amazing by the way. Taylor is a great taster lol!
We don't need the exact recipes BTW. &&& your hair looks absolutely beautiful pulled back!
Lots of people ask for exact recipes!
Always a pleasure to see your lovely garden and home❤

Totally jealous of those prices you are mentioning, wish we had a salvage store I could shop at in my area.
Everything looks good!

hi , if you heat the milk twice it will be a thicker yogurt
Enjoyed your recipes.
I cook my bulk hamburger (scrambled) that way it’s so much faster when your in a hurry for supper.
do you follow a special recipe for the duck egg pasta? I have a ton of duck eggs!
I don’t! I just base it on texture. Adding eggs & flour together til it feels right. I think what I did in this video was about 3c flour to 6-7 eggs.
😊
What vacuum sealer bags are you using and where did you get them? Also what vacuum sealer are you using?

It’s called Js Salvage, but there are a handful of similar stores within an hour or so of us

It’s a local store, so I try not to disclose the name for anonymity’s sake. But they’re also called discount groceries, bulk bin stores, etc.
what was the stuff you put in your husband's to give it a smokey flavor?
both recipes have liquid smoke, but the one I made to replicate Stubb's just had a bit extra
