This looked exceptionally well crafted and intended, especially with the use of the acoustic bass. Always reinforcing that you are a one man band, Charles!
yeah wow, not only the creativity of what harmonies/intervals to play; but actually being able to physically move both hands to hit the frets and co-ordinate fingering is another story. he's a mentalist and hell of a composer..
It might just be the fact that I'm a massive fan of Stevie Wonder, but this is one of my favorite pieces you've ever done. Not too over the top, just a genuinely nice rendition of a legendary track. Love the acoustic as well!
4 cuts? I find it insanely fascinating that this style of video - no headphones, nearly totally acoustic, and no editing cuts - really shows of your skills the best. And that is on top of the musicality! WOW!!!
Really impressed how you nailed so much of the original straight, rather than just improvising a load of complex variations, which I suspect would have been easier, even if it sounded flashier. A vintage "hardest song in the world" this time!
I am always impressed by your endless ideas. The multitude of completely different melodies and licks is something for which I have no words. And you play so effortlessly. It is rare to see both hands so relaxed while playing. Truly amazing.
4 strings making all that noise is just so darn cool to me, especially on the acoustic here. Another monster performance as usual, super inspiring man!
I appreciate that a guy at your skill level still has to rely on bass face to get through. One of my all time favorite riffs; I think I prefer the simplicity of the original, but I appreciate what you were doing with it here. Also nice to see somebody flexing with an acoustic; they don't quite deserve the bad rap they get imo.
I love the sound of acustic bass even more than electric bass....hard to find music with acoustic bass....im saving this to a playlist! Awesome work man!
I’ve been searching for bass covers to this song all day and no one could come close to the sound I wanted to hear. Thank god I found it. This is perfect and you can tell this dude got some funk running through his blood.
Sweet arrangement of a killer funky song by Stevie!! I always loved the change up going into "...when you believe in things that you don't understand...." Very cool! Keep rockin'
@@RenanRischiotto if it was mic'd up it would sound a lot worse than this. The bass probably has a pickup and it's being plugged into the DI of an interface. That's why you get no room noise. That said, it still doesn't answer the basic question. I think the OP's question was more about technique than it was about how he recorded it.
Love to see these new bassists out there like yourself that are reimagining the instrument. You are bringing a new dimension to the bass. Although it may not be compatible in a real time band setting as you are covering all the parts in the song yourself, it does demonstrate how the bass is an interesting solo instrument. Cheers!
Hello from North Carolina. I've been playing the guitar since I was 8 years old and I'm now going on 55 years now and I've worked with and played with a LOT of good bass players in my life but you make them all look like beginners, and I'm talking about international bands which I've worked with, but again, you make them all look like beginners my friend!! I'd give anything to be able to play some good music with you. You should be in the Guinness book of world records! I'm as serious as a heart attack too!! I bet that if you entered a bass players contest all the rest of those who entered would pack up their gear and leave after hearing you play because they would know that they wouldn't even stand a chance at winning against you! Keep up the fantastic playing my friend!
Jeff Beck is smiling! Just a wonderful rendition of one of my favorite songs of all time. Stevie Wonder and Jeff Beck, what more could you ask for. Thanks, made my day.
Got to say - I absolutely love this tune, this arrangement and this performance. Another to put on my personal playlist and run on repeat when I'm having to do some serious work.
At first I was just like Yeah, Charles’ standard. Clean, ok the point, good job. But then came 0:58 and I was like “he didn’t just do that” :) awesome interpretation.
yeah yeah yeah another super funky, super tasteful, super technical, super musical, super amazing, wowzers performance........... it must be Monday ........🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sooo it's nice to see you are still going with the (almost) uncut style, which I prefer best. I would prefer to see the pedal changes in a corner, instead of the inserts, anyways.
Wicked. I'm addicted. Charles plays smooth, the notes are liquid, Slapping or picking it, bass is his forte, Berthoud on the bass is to my kind of taste, I'll make time for his videos, always.
Yes! I knew I could count on you to break down the original to all its sub parts. 8 clav parts make up the original. But, of course you knew that. Anyway, love how you went there and then took it to the next level. Really fricking groovy! Well done sir!
i’m in awe, i’ve seen this 5 times already, you’re making the impossible, possible. you’re virtuous af, man. your effort, perseverance and love for the craft has taken you so far, and you’re still young soooo… can’t even imagine the masterpieces we’ll get to see/hear on this journey being a sub and a true fan at this point, you rock, man! and those earphones sound great, loving that you put the BASS mode. awesome as always, great work!!!
When you added the third voice I lost my mind, and you keep adding the guitar and the keys with the voice and the bass.... THIS IS INSANE CHARLES, HOW CAN YOU PLAY ALL THESE VOICES AT THE SAME TIME ?!?!?! YOU ARE MAKING ME SUPERSTITIOUS.
That was Amazing Charles! You fill the entire space in your own style yet respectful of Stevie's groove from so long ago. I really wish you could get with Tommy Emmanuel and work a duet somehow. Though you are both used to presenting the song fully by yourselves, i'm sure it would be a wonderful experience for each of you and all of us, your fans, to see what you two could come up with together. I'm grateful to you for doing what you do!
Man I've been waiting to hear this arrangement since the first time you put it up to vote, and I am the opposite of disappointed. That was nasty, man. Some quality slappage right there.
I never comment on your videos, but this is amazing. Seeing this in ONE TAKE is beyond amazing. I love seeing the limits of bass being pushed, and I remember just how hard bass is after switching to guitar a week.
I absolutely love this one-cut format! Feels like we're sitting in your living room hearing what you've been working on before we break out Dominion for Friday games night!
Also, +1 to everything you said about Raycons, although (forgive the heresy) I prefer the find the Balanced sound profile so that the Bass plays well with others and isn't quite so pushy! I have the "Work" earbuds which I use for conference calls sometimes, and I literally do use Awareness mode to not get hit by cars. Also the active noise cancelling (ANC) mode is awesome for when I fly across the continent for work.
I’m never disappointed when I watch one of your videos. Always stellar playing, and I love your arrangements. I’ve been playing music for over 40 years. I’d love to see a video where you talk about picking a song, then working out the arrangement, and then your method of rehearsing it.

You actually made this tune for me personally better than the original! You definitely got gold in them fingers and thumbs Charles, have a excellent day 🫵🏻😘👍🏼
I like how you can inspire me to start learning bass and to never start learning bass at the same time. Love your work man, you have some great imagination. Love from Holland.
I like the new format. Honestly, the standard "from relatively easy to impossible" showcases your skills, but this one right here has such a cool vibe that the well-edited videos lack somehow.
