Blizzard really made a battle pass so bad that made people say "maybe lootboxes weren't so bad"
and the skins so expensive in comparison to what you earn with normal playtime*
The battle pass is fine , the shop and monetization is a disaster tho.
To be fair, I actually never thought their loot boxes were bad. You got them from leveling up which was easy to do, playing tank which was literally part of the game, events, playing the arcade modes, and from endorsements. Lootboxes were so easy to get.
And to top it off, if you played tank, healer, or flex, you got in game money. So if you played even for a few hours a week you would definitely have the money you need to get skins and voice lines. All around I had no issues with how it was.
But yeah the new system is one of the worst I’ve seen in any game.
@@robbydudley1124 i agree i lowkey loved the loot boxes. i had so much free time when i was younger i could play OW1 all day n get so many loot boxes n coins n i never had to spend a single dollar unless i rlly wanted something rlly badly. i’m cheap af n broke af so a battle pass rlly just isn’t for me at all. i rlly liked the loot boxes
@@MixMeister5000 Any game with a Battle Pass doesn't respect your time.
Overwatch 2 makes me so sad because as a franchise I could always feel the love put into it that was always in some way being held back by some corporate higher up, seriously look into these corporate interview and the people who make this game, they always have this enthusiasm and genuine appreciation that’s hard to come by but they almost always say SOMETHING that seems like someone else put the words in their mouth, I guarantee you they’re not happy with the state of the game but for a long time now the people who care haven’t been making the decisions and it’s just terribly tragic, i was admittedly pretty naive for thinking that the ceo of blizzard getting fired was gonna change all this but sadly nothing changed and arguably got far worse
Ceo didn't get fired.
I think Bobby just wanted all the money he could get before Microsoft fully acquires blizzard That’s why it released 2022 instead of 2024
"me hopping on hate bandwagon, (...) just no." -> starts video with rant about connection issues, which is an only temporal thing, not happening anymore and also being a common thing for games in such 'breakthrough' moments. I'm not saying it's ok, but essentially ranting about connection issues at the start - yes, it's hopping on the hate bandwagon.
Watching further:

It actually hit harder when he said ‘you go into a store to purchase a jacket, now you gotta work in that store for 2 to 3 weeks and if I don’t do enough shifts they keep the jacket’ like.. daaaamn.. that hits hard.
I’ve never liked battle passes anyway, but that just put it into perspective for me that I will never pay for a battle pass .. ever!

Oh don't worry, the sexual predators are still there.
Sexual predators also need money to keep ... its routine
You mean Financial sexual predators

You say it like these two aren't related lol
The worst part is that people are still going to cave in and dump millions into Blizzard's bank accounts.
I have a friend that’s doing it right now ):
Yeah, for now. Blizzard will make their money, but the game will be dead in a year and they will be on to their next cash grab idea.

The only problem is that Blizzard's in California
Germany as well I think
They still are bound by regional laws where they sell/offer their product.
They were not able to sell lootboxes in the netherlands back in ow1 because the region's law deemed them gambling

Can you elaborate this is the first I'm.hearing of this
The battlepass analogy was on point. The greed has gotten out of hand. Deep Rock Galactic is currently my ideal example of excellent developers supporting their game and community.
The analogy was very bad. Battlepasses aren't a bad system even though they can be used in a very bad way.
For a good battlepass all we need to do is look at the game that popularized the system: fortnite.
Fortnite's battlepass has some amazing qualities that a lot of other games' passes lack:
- the price of the battlepass (950 vbucks) is far less than the sum of the content in the pass.
- you can earn enough in game currency within the pass to buy the next pass (1500 vbucks to be earned)
- the pass levels up even when you havent bought it and you can buy it at any point and unlock all rewards you reached up to that point (meaning you can wait untill the last day and know exactly what youre gonna purchase)
- theres no actual game content locked behind the battlepass, it's all cosmetics
- theres a free pass with some rewards as well (including some vbucks meaning that if you save up for a long time you can even buy the pass without ever having to spend a dime)
- the game is free to play, meaning its not really a way for the developpers to milk more money, its one of the main ways they can earn their money
The problem isn't the battle pass system as a whole, its blizzard.

back when my friends and I actually played OW, the generous skin rewards were honestly a big reason we'd play for a lot of events and stuff, so they may very accurately be just pushing people away from playing the game with this monetization system.
They are 100% aware people play for the skins, which is why they made them cost money. Gotta keep the shareholders happy.

I legit miss loot boxes, you got one on level up, playing arcade and got some as gifts and even with repeats you got coins which could be used to get skins and junk. Heck even getting legendary or just cool skins for a character i didn't main would encourage me to pick them more often.

I know! Forever! I played like 5 years the game off and on and now I'll never br able to play OW1 again. Cause OW2 is garbage. Have you noticed the audio? The audio is crap everything sounds shitty.
I’m not here to suck blizzards dick, But There is no legal argument saying a game developer can’t shut down their servers. Especially given the game had a ToS, which you would’ve agreed too if you played overwatch 1.
The funny part is that yes, this indeed is a potential legal issue depending on how it going to be considered. Other full games in a similar direction usually leave the dead install behind. Basically "Technically we didn't take the game away, it just sucks for you if there is no fanserver". OW2 literally overwrites OW1, so your paid copy of the game is sent to the shadow realm if you dare to accidentially click "update", with no real way of getting it back.

I watched this whole video and I can relate because I'm unacceptable garbage as well. But seriously. Very good video. I agree with everything - super rushed, clearly a cash grab, but still it is a fun game. I don't care about skins or anything like that, so for me the battle pass is extremely ignorable. But for others who actually care about skins, the pricing is super predatory and shady.
Don't care about skins as well, but the new characters. Why are they behind the grind/paywalls? It's like in APEX now, play 100 games to unlock a character and no, you can't try them to understand if you would like them.
Man just said he's unacceptable garbage as well lmao
I've always loved playing dress up in games. Having all the outfits paywalled is like a personal insult to me every single time it happens, and it gets really old how everyone tells me it's fine because it's not "pay to win". No, it's super predatory like you said and designed specifically to spite people like me who got into the first. I had almost every outfit for Mercy back when I played Overwatch and it was great doing that without dropping used car money on the game just to get it.

true. and the worst part that makes it even more disgusting are the people who defend such shady business practices. it's people who defend such things and whales that make these shady business practices the norm. majority of players would have rather payed for a full release of overwatch 2 then have a f2p game that wasn't complete and missing story mode which was the main selling point for overwatch 2.

You mean popular again instead of fucking dead? 20 million players bitch.
My favorite part about Overwatch is how in Overwatch 1 you could buy anything you wanted in the gallery as long as you played the game but now you might maybe get something you probably don't want if you watch someone else play the game. Or if you want to do it yourself you could always grind out 8 months of weeklys!
You ddint even have to buy anything in overwatch 1, i just got lootboxes for levelling up and got like 20 skins, overwatch 2 ill never be able to get 1 skin its a joke
12:40 Why not turn it into a ring or bracelet for characters who use their hands? Oh wait, that'd take time, money and effort, and they only have 2 of those things
Ironically, I miss the lootbox system. Even with straight up gambling I would win something. Now they’ve gone from greedy to super greedy battlepasses and $20 skins…
Yeah, I miss the loot box system. In my opinion I don’t think it should even be in the same category as gambling, it felt like those subscription boxes people order to see what’s inside.

Yeah, I felt like OW1s monetization was pretty fair. I had a skin I liked for pretty much every character I played despite not playing all that much.

Another problem with the apex and valorant argument is that in those games each character dosent have vastly different guns and every gun can be used by every character besides ones from abilities and gun play is a core focus in that game as some abilities arent going to be the difference between you winning and losing, and those games dont have the option of switching heroes mid round unlike overwatch so being limited to a certain amount isnt that big of a hindrance

One thing to note:
I guarantee it wasn't the developers "being lazy" that caused all these problems. Basically EVERY AAA studio is a seriously high-stress work environment. This was the result of poor coordination from leadership, as well as the massive internal shifts due to so many people leaving.
Losing employees mid-development is always really bad for any studio, because it means someone else has to pick up their work. Think of it like swapping painters halfway through a painting. The painting will still probably get finished, but it'll take the new guy twice as long to figure out where the previous artist was, and get into the flow.
