@HanselManCan It's bound to predate it, you can guarantee at a wedding or ceilidh someone has challenged his neighbour Donald Angus, whilst their all fairly off their tits, to try dancing over the swords. It's the sort of thing to start out as a dare or someone showing off something cool they'd been practicing at home to impress people, and everyone unanimously went "Right, that's cool as fuck, I'm gonna try!" It has such "Hey, watch this!" energy lol
The Sword Dance was performed the night before battle, it is said if you displaced the sword during your dance if foretold disaster. Contemporary competitive dancing requires us to wear underwear sadly, and many ballet standards have been introduced since the early 1900's and the "standardizing" of these dances. There is a "Dirk" dance in existence that was for practicing with your Dirk, but as it is not allowed in Competitive dancing it is difficult to find a teacher for it. Hope it helps, every community does it a bit different, all the best.
And if I would go to dance dancing like that I would get yelld at **like his toes are not pointed, his pas de basques are ok , and he needs to hold every thing titer , he needs to extend on his pas de basques, he needs to use the supporting foot and heels of the ground to get that bounce aka ELEVATION!
Prob because in our Dance Corps we have more of a Ballet influence than when these dances were first performed. I doubt he is doing this for competition as our Competition standards also require the use of undergarments etc. This is clearly a reenacting event and not your typical Highland Dance competition. So in my mind he isn't playing competition Highland dance therefor our rules don't apply. Being a person in dance I'm sure you're aware of just how much our dancing has evolved since the War of 1812 which is the event he is reenacting ;) Therefor today's modern dances are actually historically inaccurate.... I will say I'm glad our dances have changed to allow women to be included but also I'm really happy to see this guy posting videos I have a hard time finding men that actually dance and have the guts to post them. I have yet to post any of mine. Focusing on Competition only has caused a lot of our cultural dances such as the "Dirk" dance that are not allowed in competition, to go all but extinct. We will all be looking forward to your dance videos when they are posted, keep up the good work. Every dancer is a victory against genocide. All the best.
These men are not representing the 42nd from 1812 as is very clear, they look to be from between the 1750s and the 1790s therefore the flag is correct and the uniforms are correct.
It not about perfection. It's about actually enjoying what you do. I am going into highland dancing..... I will do it from my heart not as a perfectionist... It's beautiful part of scottish culture... Enjoy it... Try no to be so technical. The soldier wasn't perfect but he made it look fun to do.
You must be a product of the American public educational system laughingly called "Public Education." You have no idea of the English language, grammar, and punctuation.
Very traditional. He's not wearing anything under his kilt ;)
YAY!!!
Thanks to you I kept waiting for the flashing moment lol. Yeah, very traditional indeed XD
Sure he is. He has his guillies on
Laurel Bledsoe exactly
Laurel Bledsoe that look good hahaha
Nothing is "worn" under the kilt. It's all in perfect working order.
There is a version in the dark.. Done around Legos..
My Scottish relatives in the day would get drunk and do the sword dance. Sounds like they had a good time.
How much practice it must take to do this so perfectly without touching the swords
In those times, the sword dance was a customary ritual for battle, not a competition. The soldiers would have focusing on battle drill over custom.

That's why it's called a kilt cause that's what happens to ya if u ask what he's wearing under it
That's what happens if you call it a skirt.
Is that mushroom in the grass? 😂💙 makes it even better
This reminds me of my Nana, who was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, and who named me Heather.
Thats the one i was looking for i cant do the high steppers much better thank you now i can learn it
At 1:47 he touched the sword......disqualified. Sorry.
An ill omen in the days of yore.
Its Music, that prepares soldiers mind for fight and death.
Well it certainly hasn't done anything to brighten my day either.
Celtic commando now that is a classic.
Oh no... HE TOUCHED THE FUCKING SWORDS
Sword dancing may have had martial applications. Perhaps, sword dancing gave meaning to the saying "stay on you toes."

I did highland dancing from the age of 3 until 14, and this would not pass an exam.
i dont think he was wearing any under wear is that normal???? 😂
@@anjaladka7258 Yes .
If I remember correctly it's a pre-battle agility exercise.
Everything in this video looks pre 1812, the uniforms are of the 1700s style and the flag is pre 1801
You are right but I don't expect reenactors to buy new kit for just a single festival
he stepped on it and now there is blood all over the grass
I am Sikh and we have something in common here.
Ok swords dance ok maximus
0:49 seconds

The Highland dancer!! 1. The arms are not meant to be STRAIGHT, slightly bent and 2. Have you heard of the word elevation not “bounce”

I do this better than him and I'm a total beginner. I started Scottish dance in February
@@presbyteriangirl9739 really?! I could do better than this when I was 6!
@@makala1217 ok sorry I was 10 and I didn't know all the words but now I do because im older:)
The Union Flag was wrong for 1812. The drummer should have been in reversed colours.

@@vostokcosomonaut5205 you may well be correct. However, the caption says "1812" and it was this that I was reacting to.
In the Albanian folklore we have a sword dance where two guys dance and pretend they fighting with swords and only men dance this

I agree Emily. He's not doing it right.
As a Bass Drummer the Bass Drummers mallets were to hard.
The drums in this video are in the style of the early 1800s. Nothing like 2000s competition style drums.
And they said white people had no culture.
Fred Garvin educate yourself
Fred Garvin across all different European nations there is vast amount of culture, and more to Scotland’s culture than just this
Both the bagpipes and dancing is just wrong.
The piping isn’t terrible in terms of fingerwork but the tuning is shameful lol. Like they didn’t even bother to tune up
A more poncy version of Morris Dancing
Is he praying to Satan?
+Mitshel nope
Nope, to Cthulhu.
Aaaahh the original femboys
Very, very cringe😧
Maluki Ngulo not really
